what's your favourite comedy moment and favourite angst moment in the whole show? whatever you want to define this as

eeee okay. i had to ponder this question because. how do you choose only one

comedy moment: my god i know i'm repeating myself but the entirety of 4.06, especially the one where Leon goes "arthur getting on your nerves?" and merlin says "not for much longer" colin's line delivery is everything to me

angst moment: ough. one that comes to mind is 4.07 when merlin is trying to convince arthur that gaius wouldn't leave without saying goodbye to him. absolutely horrific episode but that scene in particular just. hits. everyone is sad and nobody is saying what they mean and arthur is dense and being manipulated and merlin-- i'd understand if he were to just not forgive arthur for that one.

#1 is easy: 4.06 a servant of two masters!! i've lost count how many times i've watched it at this point. it's like the quintessential merlin episode to me. it's funny, it's tragic, it has so many perfect moments that i adore with my whole heart. gaius and gwen teaming up. arthur beginning to doubt agravaine. anything merlin says delights me. mergana torture scene, hello?? the reunion hug, et cetera, i could go on but you get it

choosing two more is so difficult because it so depends on my mood ghvfhe but one is:

2.04 lancelot and guinevere. the sheer amount of relationship building between... countless dynamics in this episode alone makes it one of my faves. gwencelot, of course, heartbreaking; the way morgana loved gwen so much; merlin and arthur bonding over their shared missing parents; arthur going against arthur's wishes and morgana arguing with him, too; arthur helping morgana, albeit not entirely selflessly. i adore it. there's also that shot of merlin sleeping against a tree covered up to his neck by a blanket.

third: 4.10 a herald of the new age. it's just so wonderfully creepy!! it (not unlike 5.03) has a vibe that just works for me, the ghost, the forest, the possession, the lighting, the eerieness of it - reminiscent of my favorite ghost hunting tv show. the way it has arthur confronting his guilt makes me want to eat glass, and merlin's scenes in the druid camp are haunting. i think i'll rewatch this episode soon

honorable mentions to 2.09 the lady of the lake and 3.08 the eye of the phoenix because you asked for three but not even mentioning these two felt wrong 😭

if you could change three things - & only three things - abt the show, what would they be? they can b big or small. !

1. i would give gwen a bit more depth in the later seasons. someone on my dash (i'm sorry i can't remember who) recently talked about it and i agreed that most things that happen to her later on really only revolve around arthur. also her friendship with merlin changed. i think it would have been nice to still have her be a little awkward and reckless as she was before, though it does make sense that she'd change. i would have loved for the show to at least show a bit about her state after morgana's curse was gone - did she feel guilt, did she even remember? i adored her in diamond of the day though.

2. let them grow beards!!! you know how in 5x13 arthur is like. dying and stuff and they've both been running through the woods for days and they're clean shaven. i actually don't know why they did it throughout the show like that but it would have been fun. lol (i am passionate about beards and i won't elaborate)

3. mhh... more freya 🤲🏻 i know she reappears briefly but. yk. there's a whole different world there. was she just chilling in the lake? did she hang out with lance and elyan (and arthur)? what if merlin went to visit her sometimes. it would probably have been difficult to include it in the show but. freylin rights 🗣️

there's probably something else important that i'm not remembering at the moment but yeah these came to mind just now hehe

i am always thinking about around 40 scenes at once so i'm going to talk about my favorite scene:

not just this but also what follows - the choice merlin makes to proclaim that there can be no place for magic in camelot. the first time i watched this i cried so hard i couldn't breathe lmao

anyway. why do i love it. first of all: merlin's connection to magic, to nature, how it's so self evident to him that he doesn't even think to hide it from arthur. this is just the way he experiences the world, and it's beautiful. merlin's intrinsic relationship with magic is very dear to me and i especially love it when fics examine it further

secondly: this is just. such a pivotal moment on their way to ruin and seeing merlin and arthur have this conversation is heart wrenching to me, especially the second time. the way merlin is suffering and swallowing it down. arthur asking merlin for advice, seriously. the way they sit so far apart. the way merlin still hopes for "a just and fair kingdom for all"

i could eat this entire scene and it would nourish me for days.
