Is Mark Making Important?
As a parent, it is easy to get confused with technical terms when it comes to child development and activities. You might be thinking that a child is just making a mess on the sofa or scribbling on the floor when they are actually improving their mark making skills.
Mark making is a term used for the creation of different patterns, lines, textures and shapes on various surfaces like a piece of paper, on the floor, outside in the garden or on an object like your coffee table or your brand new sofa.
It can be a dot or a line across a paper made with anything that can leave a mark, for instance a pencil, a pen, crayons or sticks dipped in paint or mud. These are very important steps that should be encouraged and valued as many times as possible and as many different ways as we can because mark making is not only about developing writing skills and early writing, it is a sensory and physical experience that both parents and children can enjoy at any age and ability level.
How about a sidewalk chalk activity with your kids in the afternoon? It can be great fun for the whole family 😊
You want no mess in your house? No worries, find a registered childminder in your area, they are happy to do messy activities with your child.😊

Your New Flashy Toy
You are 8 months old and got your hands on a new gadget. It looks great, has all the colours of the rainbow with countless buttons. You begin by pressing the first button and the loudest noise you’ve ever heard starts scratching your eardrums.
In an instant, your grown-up shadow - who constantly calls herself “Mum”- tunes up with her highest pitched voice and the device keeps flashing and spinning like crazy! Your head starts spinning so you decide to press the second button but then you wish you hadn’t; another screaming voice with endless repetition of something that Mum refers to as “Your ABCs”. Your sticky shadow is trying to sing over your fabulous device that makes you want to explode.
You try stopping the noise as you’re going absolutely bananas but as you push the button hard, another terrible song comes with never-ending flashing colours and deafening sounds.
You are completely fed up at this point and try pushing the gadget as hard as you can to make it stop and you give it some well-directed kicks to make sure the fight is over. Then comes Mum again, talking without ever taking a breath, she definitely loves hearing her own voice.
Yet you just feel very tired, really exhausted, would really want to explain to Mum how you feel and you were really happy with your new flashy toy but it just turned into something else. All you wanted was to have some fun, explore a bit and learn new things.
Instead, you burst into tears and scream like a baby, you completely lose it. “Mum, I can’t take this any longer, my brain feels overwhelmed. Could you just give me something plain and simple to play with and leave me in peace for a minute? I would really appreciate it. Thanks Mum, you’re the best.”
