what do you know of loss?
no words for how much I adore these two characters and the ways their journeys parallel one another's... take this as part character study (what if they helped each other heal!) and part ship content (they were made for each other...) anyways. the shadowzel illness never stops

The Amateur's Guide to Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley
In this video, I return to the world of Moominvalley to analyze the hotly anticipated game Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley and its relationship with the original Moomin stories, Tove Jansson, and the philosophies it connects with.
Special Thanks to Kiki from Transparency for looking at the script. You can follow her Moomin Stuff at @marsmombestmom
Disclosure: My copy of the game was provided to me by Hyper Games and Raw Fury. While I think objectivity is overrated, the opinions in this video have not been influenced by the developers and are a reflection of my own thoughts on this game and the Moomins.

this was an absurd amount of effort for what was ultimately an offhanded-joke but i needed to procrasinate lmao
if you watched @henrykathman's "Melody of Moominvalley" stream, (hi, hello, i made the thumbnail art, that was a cool surprise to see in my sub-box lol) Kathman made a comment about being glad no one has made him into a Moomintroll (or Snorktroll, i guess) because he thinks he would look like Snork
i had two thoughts in reply to this VOD:
that's probably because i would assume most video-essayist are on the spectrum of Hemulans (oversimplification: academics) to Teety-Woo/Woodies (oversimplification: big fans, arguably obsessive). you're probably more of a Hemulan? based on how you present yourself in videos? idk, i dont know you in your personal life lmao Hemulan just seems likely considering the hobby being so analytical (and also is easier for me to look at the different styles of since Woodies seem to have less general rules towards their appearance. and Teety-Woo is the only one of its kind that i know of, idk what is Teety-Woo's species and what is Teety-Woo's individuality there. but, like, that's not nearly as fun as my bullshit quiz lmao)
fucking bet
*: assets in not-gif form below Read More
(psa: please do forgive me for misspellings. i am dyslexic and will probably edit this repeatedly for quite some time, but im tired atm so Now It Is Posted)
anyway, i whipped all these up in about 2 or 3 days? idk, my chronic health issues have been a monster lately, its hard to keep track of days rn
but i made:
comics Moomintroll/Snorktroll
90s Moomintroll/Snorktroll and Hemulan
Tales From Moominvalley inspired illustration art of Hemulan where it has those lifeless "bug eyes with tiny pupils" style i love (but that i also understand why Jansson went back and gave them bigger pupils after a certain edition, and drew with more expressive eyes after a while)
why did i do three different styles + 3 different species? because i was torn on which to do and ended up pulling a classic Kaiden-Shenandoah and going "ill do more work and let them choose which one they like best". something something anxiety, i dont know what to tell you, im trying to learn self-acceptance lmao besides, it was fun to do a quicker shuft through style changes than the usual heavier studying i make Google Images help me do
speaking of, i dont often share my references because i worry about clutter, but i want to include it today and i also used less ref than usual, so you get clutter lol
(i learned last time that Tove Jansson doesn' often draw mugs; so i did my best guesses based on the references here + the result of my references the last time i drew in Jansson' style, which was more so her later novel-illustrations, if i remember right, as opposed to today. lots of best guesses today.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
first of all, i guessed on Kathman's eye-color based on zooming in and it was too pixelated to tell for sure even with the eyedropped tool. secondly, very fun tying in the blue hair dye since 90s Snork has a pink edge to his hair and Mr Hemulan has a green edge to his. last of all: i made them with (and without) a light beard/stubble, since i saw Kathman has one now. but also that was enirely guesswork on my part: Tove Jansson drew heavy-duty moustaches/beards or completely facially-hairless characters, no in-between. so i used educated guesses on how to adapt that. and i feel a bit like i did the male version of that one Snorkmaiden lipstick comic for my efforts lmao but hey! i tried!
Tumblr media
my only thing is idk which set to upload to instagram, bc doing all the assets of with/out facial hair feels oddly excessive and maybe goes past instagram's images-per-post limit, idk, ill upload these there someday i guess. really wish instagram would let me post a gif but idk how to do that. c'est la vie
you also may notice one of the Hemulan sets includes a magnifying glass. i just thought it was thematically appropriate for someone analytical, especially since one of my references above did have it available for me to also reference lol
as a fun detail, i did a more Police Inspector color palette for the 90s Hemulan design, and a more Moominpappa palette for the 90s Moomintroll/Snorktroll designs. hence why those colors aren't the same
and the last thing is that i made the comic assets yellow-y to reflect the aging of paper and the quality of the photo references i have. (Henry Kathman, if you want to edit them to be white for the aesthetic of something, feel totally free)
here's all the assets i made in total. the gif version felt the most succint but yeah. also, Henry Kathman, if you are reading this: same rules apply. feel free to use these in anything you want, credit would be nice. (also, very sweet that you saw my name change away from my childhood nickname, i appreciate that 🫶). credit in the future can be to either here or my instagram (which i changed to match this hyphen-less url, since tumblr terminated my last blog for unknown reasons) i hope you are not upset that i went against your wishes of gratitude that nobody had drawn you as a Moomintroll/Snorktroll, but i hope the fact that i think you don't look like Snork even as a Moomintroll/Snorktroll helps. i hope you also dont mind the Hemulan additions lmao. but yeah, i wont blame you if you prefer the more human (or arguably Mymble? idk species) style i did beforehand in the last batch and don't use these. that one has way more references with lots of drafts and this is more of me messing around and finalizing the first draft i made each time around lol but i think they came out fun! very silly distraction, thanks for the idea lmao
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
thanks to Henry Kathman for the fun VOD and the much-(un)needed procrastination excuse. it was a good distraction from a pretty bad flare-up in my disability and a full plte of things to do that i needed an escape from. hope youre having a great day!

Love your Goncharov video such an inspiration for my own Goncharov screenplay. I would love to talk to you and know if there was a longer cut of your Goncharov video?
Yeah, I am open to talking about this more (feel free to shoot me a DM). As for a longer cut of the video, while there were topics surrounding Goncharov that I didn't talk about, I haven't felt much need to further expand upon the video itself to make a longer cut.

The Eternal Recurrence of Adventure Time
youtube
With the conclusion of season 1 of Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake, this video seeks to explore the show's relationship with the philosophical concept of Eternal Recurrence, the notion that everything stays, right where we left it. But does everything truly stay without changing? Come along with me to find out!

Yooo as someone lucky enough to work with her, I second the recommendation for Sarah, who you can follow at @hms-no-fun/
I would also want to throw a couple of other queer YouTubers onto the pile. (In Alphabetical Order)
Adequate Emily
Emily produces a lot of great videos reviewing and analyzing different films. Some are from a queer theory perspective, others tap into more historical examples. My current favorite video from her is about the 1970 antifascist masterpiece The Conformist.
youtube
Anansi's Library
R. Anansi discusses several topics relating to history, literature, and political theory. In addition to their essays, they also sometimes do spoken word poetry, which is pretty cool. I would recommend their video discussing the rhetoric behind the idea of "Protect Women"
youtube
Aranock
@aranock is someone else I've been lucky to work with. Lots of their videos offer an interesting perspective on the queer experience, including a video called Queer Relativity that is pretty cool, though my favorite is still their video discussing Midnight Mass.
youtube
La Femme Fictionale
Sam's videos explore different subjects from an Acesexual perspective, which is something you don't see as much in the video essay space. Her most recent video discussing the Boleyn girls will be interesting for anyone who enjoys Six or any other historical media relating to Henry VIII.
youtube
Laura Crone
You may have seen her videos about Riley Sager or REPO! but Laura's vids offer an interesting mixture of film and music theory, theology and literature. There are too many of her vids to choose from, but her most recent video about Ghost is an absolute banger that needs way more views.
youtube
LauraKBuzz
Laura is an extremely talented writer, editor, and accessibility activist who was the first out trans person I followed online thanks to my favorite podcast podquisition, Her videos on the games industry and accessibility come recommended to anyone who is interested in making gaming more inclusive. She also edited a book called Gender Euphoria, which is a collection of stories by trans, non-binary, and intersex writers sharing positive experiences of the Non-Cis experience. If you are interested in hearing about the queer experience in a way that doesn't fixate on queer suffering, this is a pretty good read.
Offbeat Kiki
@offbeatkiki is one of the best people discussing animation on YouTube right now. As someone who is also known for discussing cartoons online, it is nice whenever you can find other creators who tries to take a more constructive perspective on the medium. Case in point, they made a video about the 1992 Tom and Jerry Movie that presented a poignant perspective on a film that I absolutely despised and dismissed growing up.
youtube
Rantasmo
When it comes to Queer video essayists, it is shocking that people don't mention Rantasmo as one of the earliest voices in this space, as they were doing Queer analysis all the way back in the days of Channel Awesome. His videos were some of my first exposure to queer culture growing up and were vital in helping to develop my perspective today.
youtube
Transparency
I've recommended @transparencyboo's videos a number of times before, and have even received help from Kiki of @marsmombestmom in my remaster of my Moomin video, but I want to once again remind you to go watch Transparency, you cowards. They produce multi hour retrospectives on different video games and likewise make some of the most underrated gaming videos online right now with great art, stellar writing, and insightful analysis. My current favorite is their video is their two and a half hour retrospective on the Star Fox series that you should check out.
youtube
Videokind
Primarily hosted by @mattjcrowley, Videokind produce some of the best essays discussing film online. Not only is Matt an extremely talented writer, he's also such a genuinely nice guy. I absolutely recommend you watch their most recent video, which is a total evisceration of The Whale and the ways Brendan Fraser's great performance masks the vile implications of that garbage movie.
youtube
Wensleydale Cheddar
I'm a little biased on this one cause I co-host the podcast Podcastmon Adventures with them, but Wensleydale produces amazing podcasts discussing World Trigger and other manga. We are currently working our way through the Pokémon Adventures manga, and I especially love the expertise and care they put into everything they do. Well worth a follow!
youtube
My shout-out to queer youtubers
Hbombs list was great but obviously not comprehensive. I watch a lot of video essayists and wanted to give a little love to the smaller channels that fall under the radar. Please feel free to add to this list!
let's talk about stuff/Sarah Zedig
If you've seen Jesse Gender's videos on the Matrix movies you may already be familiar with Sarah. She does excellent film and culture analysis with a lot of great conversations on paratext and outside influence in engaging with text. Her video on Tunic is one of my favorites.
youtube
Pamphleteer
No one makes videos like hers, which has the side effect making them a bit hard to describe. I will link one of my favorites which describes the disconnected temporality of being older when you discover you're queer.
youtube
Turbo Queer
Really really under watched channel. Skylar covers a lot of topics from video games, to anarchist history and modern events, to autistic life, to current politics. For a fun one check out her video on the SpongeBob strike episode.
youtube
Kaz Rowe
Kaz does a fantastic job examining modern myths and manufactured history primarily pertaining to western Europe, Victorian & Edwardian England, and 1800-1900s US. And of course, talking about historical queerness in all its ambiguities and evolutions. I highly recommend their video on Weimar Germany.
youtube
drapetomania
drapetomania interrogates the politics of low class and high class art and entertainment from a queer and Black perspective. Their art history videos alone cover many angles of white supremacist history I haven't seen anyone else discuss and I'm very excited to see more from them. They are also a very under viewed channel that more people should see!
youtube
I am error
Evelynn's channel primarily discusses video games in a presentation style and voice most similar to Action Button reviews. There's something just a bit more personal here though. I hesitate to say cozy since that word has a bit of an infantilizing connotation, maybe comforting is closer. She puts an immense amount of thought and empathy into the experience of playing video games and the personal narratives we build with them.
youtube
Swolesome
For more transmasc perspectives there's Swolesome. He has a lot of interesting insights into the more traditionally masculine and "broish" communities like fitness as well as commentary on recent trans issues.
youtube
Shonalika
Music, disability, and aggressively non-binary. Their video on gender presentation in heavy metal was really insightful. I would also check out the video "Why I Wear Gloves" for more insight on invisible disabilities.
youtube
Vivian Strange
Vivian delights in being a bit of a contrarian- something I really appreciate. She's probably going to challenge you and you're probably going to disagree at times, which is what makes her channel so important. Her video on Marquis De Sade is powerful and a must watch (if you can stomach the subject material, although I would encourage you to try). I haven't seen her most recent video on Saw yet but I am extremely excited to.

I have too many thoughts on The Great Gatsby (2013)
Music by Molly Noise (She/Her)
YouTube | Podcast | Patreon
This video sees me delving into the 2013 adaptation of The Great Gatsby directed by Baz Luhrmann; a film that many have regarded as a definitive version of F Scott Fitzgerald's original novel, while others regard it as a dubstep-laden imitation of the literary classic. Which one is it? Settle in and find out, old sport!

Have you seen Once Upon a Crime on Netflix? It makes some very questionable decisions on adapting Cinderella, particularly in regards to the ending.
I must admit, I'm not particularly up to date on some of the stuff on Netflix right now due to the writer and actor's strike, but the prospect of an Agatha Christie style fairy tale murder mystery does sound quite interesting, I'll have to check it out.
Though if I'm going to guess, they are probably going to do the thing other adaptations do and make Cinderella an angelic lady who displays little agency or try to "subvert it" by making her this femme fatale figure as if a bunch of other adaptations haven't already done the same thing.
Either way, it can't be worse than Bad Cinderella...
