Tactics - 1

I started playing today and have had quite a bit of fun already.

I'll discuss non-spoiler things in general, vague, terms and then put anything specific below.

Firstly: as all the spinoffs seem to do, thus far, the relationship between the thieves is much, much, more friendly. Ryuji and Morgana, in particular, in the beginning already have actually really nice interactions with each other, fun, supportive, compassionate which I enjoyed. A clear continuation of their better relationship in PQ2 and Strikers.

I like the new character so far, although I can't say too much about them yet as I am still very much only at the start.

The game has a definite comedic vibe to it which I don't mind. It also seems to set itself explicitly between the defeat of Yaldaboath and when Joker actually leaves, not that I think that much matters. I doubt they actually care too much about the specifics of the timeline when making spinoffs.

Just a quick Ryuji tangent as I do love him:

Right at the start we get Ryuji classically being the first to always rush to help others, in this case Ann and Makoto get into a pinch and without hesitation Ryuji rushes in to help. It ends up backfiring for him but I do like that he consistently remains the quickest of the Thieves to risk himself for the others, it is an endearing trait.

For Ryuann shippers the opening prologue actually has a nice little sequence for the two where Ryuji rushes in to save Ann, gets in danger himself, and Makoto has to intervene to stop Ann from rushing by herself alone to help him out when everyone else is already falling back.

One thing I have really enjoyed so far is it seems the game is expanding Lavenza as a character and, in particular, granting her more interaction with Morgana. This is something I am happy to see as I think there is a serious missed opportunity in not having the two Cognitive beings actually engage with each other more.

Tactics

The time for Ryuji comes soon. I've missed the sunshine boi and Persona 5 in general. The spinoffs ahve always impressed me thus far, more than the actual main game I must confess, so I am optimistic about thsi one too.

The chibi style reminds me of PQ2 as well and I have an enomrous softspot for that one.

Ah, if only we could ever see Hikari again.

Thoughts on Ryuji x Shiho?

There are few (are there any?) Ryuji pairings I dislike. I think Ryuji/Shiho can be fun and has potential when written well, like anything.

Regardless of pairing or not I do think it is a pity that we never get to see Ryuji/Shiho interact at all. Ryuij was the only student of his own volition daring to try to prove Kamoshida treated the team poorly (Joker just joins because Ryuji ropes him in) and Shiho obviously firsthand experienced that Ryuji was telling the truth about his treatement, even though the entire school called him a lair (I do still wish we got SOME indication of what Ann actually thought about this).

So, I feel them not interacting is a pity, but it just ties into the twin pities of: (1) Shiho could have been a fun character to keep around and have more interactions with (2) The injustices Ryuji collectively suffered at the hands of Shujin's student body are never addressed and simply dissatisfying swept under the rug.

The only reason I am happy that Shiho was not included as a more permanent character is that I have no doubt if she was that Atlus would make her romanceable and I have made clear on multiple occasions my dislike of the way romance was handled for the player character in P5.

Flashback: Childhood Friends AU, meeting for the first time, Makoto listening to Ryuji’s recording recalling her father might agree with the PT

Day 5:

Pirates: Sailing the 7 seas together, One Piece AU, Rival Captains AU, Pirate/Mermaid AU, duel, fishing together

Adventure: superhero AU, playing an adventure game together like botw

Discovery: Finding treasure/lost city together, discovering a new food, solving a crime

Day 6:

Future: apartment together, visiting eachother at work with lunch, marriage, waking up together, eating breakfast together

Parenthood: family portrait, second generation p5 ideas, child PT outfit, take your kid to work day, finding out they’re pregnant

Day 7:

Free: selfie together, creating calling cards together/distributing them, buchimaru outfits/merchandise, listening to rock music together, watching old western movies together, playing co-op together

A very fun, Colombian developed, JRGP-style game that has a lot of character to it. The visuals are wonderful and the voice acting is very good too. I like the mechanics for the most part as well.

Got any headcanons for a Ryukoto arcana swap? Hope you're doing okay with the everything happening nowadays.

I’ve never given it an enormous amount of thought but some things do occur rather quickly. Makoto as someone who earns an ill reputation at Shujin mostly due to acting on her own, actual, sense of justice as opposed to her efforts to conform to authority structures leads to her being more of an outcast, largely because she isn’t one to submit to the demands of authority figures unless she actually personally agrees with them.

With Ryuji one route to go is to of course not replicate his prior behaviour as someone who can’t control himself when confronted with injustice. Instead, akin to Makoto in canon, to make him someone who has been willing to swallow his own sense of right-and-wrong in order to advance in the system. In this regard whilst he’s unlikely to go the route of being a model student and student council member, his athletic ambitions not ending perhaps see him become a popular student at the school, one who tends to hang around in a large social circle of hangers-on and fans. Ryuji has always had an issue in that he craves validation of some sort from people around him (no doubt due to his systemic lack of feelings of self-worth) and so he’d be the sort who could, with a few tweaks, end up buying into what people seeking to flatter him say as genuine if it makes him feel validated.

Also like???? This is relevant to the Ryukoto Royalty AU I had thought up a whiiile back! Basically Princess Makoto (I know fitting title) and her loyal guard/chariot Ryuji that are in a sort of forbidden love hahaha but I only talked about it to some discord folks and haven’t went any farther than that! If I find the motivation I may write up some scenes about the au (it just won’t be today)

Persona 5 Strikers - A Strange Scene

I have said it before that Ryuji, and Morgana, get to speak quite a bit more than most of the rest of the cast because they often serve to speak *for* Akira/Ren. Because the player character is limited to very little actual communication, and it would interrupt the flow of dialogue to jump to your options too frequently, often for extended stretches, particularly in intense or emotional scenes, Morgana/Ryuji deliver a lot of the dialogue and then Akira/Ren simply delivers a closing sentiment. 

We see this to a clear extent in Sophia’s final conversation with the Lockkeeper in the Okinawa Jail. Even though practically the entire diatribe there is delivered by Ryuji, with Morgana chiming in to agree, and Akira/Ren adding on a single brief sentence of bland assurance, the game treats it largely as if Akira/Ren said most of it.

This style leads to a really funny scene in Sendai. I’m playing the game over again and I noticed it more clearly this time.

The scene is when the group first encounters Ango and he goes up to Haru and offers her an autograph then kiss. The following happens:

Ango offers Haru a kiss, something she clearly does not want. Ryuji immediately steps forwards and tells Ango to back-off, that he is making Haru uncomfortable. Akira/Ren then can basically do a one-line repeat of this (back off/leave them alone etc. etc.) and stands behind Ryuji. Ango completely ignores Ryuji to look at Akira/Ren. Ryuji then once more tells Ango to get lost, effectively, and leave Haru alone, to which Ango, looking directly at Ryuji, asks basically ‘do you think you can get away with talking to me like that?’ But, weirdly, even though the comment is said in response to Ryuji, is said whilst looking directly at Ryuji, then it is Akira/Ren who answers the question as if it was directed at him. Ango then even turns to Akira/Ren to comment ‘this one’s got backbone’ even though Ryuji is the one who got up right in his face and has been the most confrontational with him.

It’s a small thing but its an interesting way in which Ryuji in the scene, to an extent, serves as an extension of Akira/Ren. Ango doesn’t really seem to register Ryuji at all, even though he is the one who is being most confrontational, the one initiating the interaction and the one speaking the most, but Ango treats Ryuji’s comments almost as if coming from Akira/Ren, to the extent that the question he is seemingly asking Ryuji in the scene somehow ends up becoming an interaction with Akira/Ren.

One of the best things about Ryuji is he is always just the most supportive of all his friends. He literally just thinks they are the most amazing people and it is incredibly sweet how open he is about his love for them.
