ALSO ALSO ALSO the scientist in the cold open mentions ergot, which causes ergotism - it's the fungus that LSD is synthesized from. It has hallucinogenic purposes as the scientist mentioned then. I did my final project last year on the Salem Witch Trials and, in my research, I came across ergot. There's a lot of convincing cases for ergotism being the cause of the Salem Witch Trails, but that's a long Tumblr post for another time. But ergot as a fungus grows in wheat in specific conditions, so it would make perfect sense that the fungus comes from flour.

The pancake mix that ran out, the raisin cookies Sarah doesn't like, the cake Joel forgot to buy, the biscuits they turned down ... the fungus had to be in the flour, right?
