So how can you celebrate?

♂ Rewatch or reread your favourite Mars-centric chapter, episode, or musical! As one of the earliest established characters, she has several key episodes in the 90s anime. Try episode 010, her introduction; 054, where she reveals her passion for songwriting as she stages an idol-like performance at her school’s culture festival; 070, where she saves enemy Koan from self-destruction; 090, the first episode of S, where she is targeted for her Pure Heart; 103, where she works hard to convince a renowned taiko drummer to perform at a local festival; 152, where an excitable young girl models herself after Rei’s every move; or 183, where she goes camping to visit her sculptor cousin in the mountains. ♂ Why not go out on a dare and try Rei’s favourite food - puffer fish. If you’re not confident in the toxicity of fugu in your area, she also likes all Thai food, so you could visit your favourite local Thai restaurant. Her least favourite food is asparagus, but only the tinned kind - so try and hold off for the day.

♂ Rei has many hobbies, a “jack of all trades” thanks to her dream of being a high-powered multi-career woman. She is shown to be a competent singer-songwriter, even if it takes her a lot more effort than she pretends. Since she dreams of someday making it big as a musician, why not support local talent and see a live show for her birthday?

Rei relies a lot on her ESP and sixth sense, receiving premonitions through dreams and by scrying in flames, but Rei’s favourite method of divination is actually tarot readings. You could shuffle through a deck yourself for a self-reading, or find someone online or in your area who can perform a reading for you.

You may think of Usagi or Minako as the resident “fangirl” of the series, but Rei is a closet nerd herself; she has a large collection of Sailor V manga, and is enough of a fan of the Takarazuka revue to own photobooks. Celebrate by rereading your own favourite manga series or by watching a Takarazuka stage performance.

As a representative of Hikawa Shrine, Rei is very community-minded, volunteering herself for public events, festivals, etc. The subsequent publicity for the shrine and springboard for her own career is obviously not a factor… In her (fiery) spirit, why not involve yourself in your own community-run events and services, volunteering your time and skills on a recurring or one-off basis?

♂ Dress like Rei for the day! Rei has a very forward-focused, goal-oriented personality she likes to show through her clothes, with bold colours, dramatic cuts, and sharp or form-fitting silhouettes. Because she is an expert at tailoring her presentation to the time/audience, her style can vary from cute and innocent to mature and businesslike based on how she wants to be perceived, but common wardrobe staples include miniskirts, tailored tops, statement jewellery, and a killer high heel. She favours vivid colours like reds, purples, mustards, and black.

As Sailor Mars, she wears chunky 80s throwback earrings in the shape of stars (5-pointed to start in the anime, 6 pointed from Super form and in the manga, 4 pointed in PGSM) and iconic red stiletto heels. Her nails are shown to turn firetruck red from her second transformation onwards. Her image colours are red and purple.

♂ In the 2004 live-action Sailor Moon series known as PGSM, Rei wore a name charm bracelet made of beads and crystals that was very important to her and later allowed her to transform. Why not make your own name bracelet with your favourite colours and birthstone beads?

Writing tips for long fics that helped me that no one asked for.

1.) Don't actually delete content from your WIP unless it is minor editing - instead cut it and put it in a secondary document. If you're omitting paragraphs of content, dialog, a whole scene you might find a better place for it later and having it readily available can really save time. Sometimes your idea was fantastic, but it just wasn't in the right spot.

2.) Stuck with wording the action? Just write the dialog then revisit it later.

3.) Stuck on the whole scene? Skip it and write the next one.

4.) Write on literally any other color than a white background. It just works. (I use black)

5.) If you have a beta, while they are beta-ing have them read your fic out loud. Yes, I know a lot of betas/writers do not have the luxury of face-timing or have the opportunity to do this due to time constraints etc but reading your fic out loud can catch some very awkward phrasing that otherwise might be missed. If you don't have a beta, you read it out loud to yourself. Throw some passion into your dialog, you might find a better way to word it if it sounds stuffy or weird.

6.) The moment you have an idea, write it down. If you don't have paper or a pen, EMAIL it to yourself or put it in a draft etc etc. I have sent myself dozens of ideas while laying down before sleep that I 10/10 forgot the next morning but had emailed them to myself and got to implement them.

7.) Remember - hits/likes/kudos/comments are not reflective of the quality of your fic or your ability to write. Most people just don't comment - even if they say they do, they don't, even if they preach all day about commenting, they don't, even if they are a very popular blog that passionately reminds people to comment - they don't comment (I know this personally). Even if your fic brought tears to their eyes and it haunted them for weeks and they printed it out and sent it to their friends they just don't comment. You just have to accept it. That being said - comment on the fic you're reading now, just do it, if you're 'shy' and that's why you don't comment the more you comment the better you'll get at it. Just do it.

8.) Remove unrealistic daily word count goals from your routine. I've seen people stress 1500 - 2000 words a day and if they don't reach that they feel like a failure and they get discouraged. This is ridiculous. Write when you can, but remove absurd goals. My average is 500 words a day in combination with a 40 hour a week job and I have written over 200k words from 2022-2023.

9.) There are dozens of ways to do an outline from precise analytical deconstruction that goes scene by scene to the minimalist bullet point list - it doesn't matter which one you use just have some sort of direction. A partial outline is better than no outline.

10.) Write for yourself, not for others. Write the fic you know no one is going to read. Write the fic that sounds ridiculous. You will be so happy you put it out in the world and there will be people who will be glad it exists.

So how can you celebrate?

♆ Rewatch or reread your favourite Neptune-centric chapter, episode, or musical! She is a key character in most of Sailor Moon S, and in particular episode 093, which explores her passion and skill for the visual and musical arts, episode 097, which juxtaposes her against fellow water-Guardian Sailor Mercury, episode 106, which explores how she met her girlfriend Haruka Ten'ô/Sailor Uranus, or episode 107, where she teaches a children’s art/sculpture class. A portion of the SuperS special also features her prominently, asking her to make a difficult choice over Haruka’s safety.

♆ Sailor Neptune has two official image songs from the 90s anime, Senshi no Omoi [“Mind of a Guardian”] and Unmei wa Utsukushiku [“Destiny So Beautiful”]. ♆ Treat yourself to some finely-prepared sashimi, Michiru’s favourite food. Alternative, avoid kikurage mushrooms, her least favourite.

♆ Michiru’s most well-known hobby is her music, being an accomplished and famous violinist. Why not explore local talent in your area and catch a live show, attend a classical concert as Michiru often did herself, or listen to some violin arrangements online - perhaps this one?

In addition to a musical artist, she’s also a visual artist, favouring painting and sketching anything from portraits to landscapes to surrealist mindscapes, so bust out those art supplies and ask a friend or cousin to model for you.

She enjoys swimming, both competitively and for pleasure, so you could go for a trip to the pool or take it a step further by going for a swim at the ocean, the source of her strength.

Michiru is also an avid collector of makeup, so if you have a collection of your own, try a refreshing new look with some products you don’t use as often, look up some tutorials on YouTube, and take this yearly opportunity to discard anything expired and no longer safe to use. Just… don’t mention lipstick, alright?

♆ Dress like Michiru for the day! Michiru always styled herself elegantly, choosing outfits with long billowing dresses and skirts, off-the-shoulder blouses, and semi-formal blazers. When she did go casual she tapped into her element with a “beachy” vibe. She favoured pastels, often blues and cool pinks/purples, and though didn’t wear dark colours as frequently was partial to deep wines and maroons. A common accessory was an understated, minimalistic gold necklaces, often a choker. Her hair, which ranged from above shoulder-length to waist-length depending on the adaptation, was usually worn down and curled into waves that framed her face, but she would sometimes wear it with a headband or tied loosely with a ribbon into a fountain ponytail.

As Sailor Neptune, her image colours were navy blue and deep aqua/teal with a gold accent. In the manga, she had a golden sun charm affixed to her choker and wore several different earrings, but most frequently golden ringed planets dangling from gold studs (as canonized in Crystal), sometimes with six points around the planet like a stylized sun. In the anime, she wore simple teal studs, and the sun on her choker became a jewel with gold embelishments. Her iconic shoes were teal heels with criss-crossed ballerina-like ribbons around the ankles. For makeup, when she transformed, her nails turned teal/sea green, and she gained a pale pink lip gloss.

She also liked the “pair look” trend of matching her outfit with Haruka’s, if you feel so inclined!

♆ Stunt on your friends by just being ridiculously good at your hobbies! So much better than them that they feel unqualified to stand in your presence! If you can somehow incorporate a lemon in a ridiculous fashion, all the better!
