Imagine you're in school, fall in love, and get pregnant. He comes from wealth, so you think you and your baby are going to live a nice cushy life with your new man. Then he gets mauled by a bear. He's eaten right in front of you. You grieve for him. You go to his family, hoping they'll take you in, but they're awful and they want to harm your baby. So you end up raising her alone. It's tough being a single mother, but you do your best to love and protect her. She grows up and goes to school. The school is known for its bear attacks, but what can you do? It's a good school, and you can only protect her so much. Eventually your baby has to fend for herself. You can't help but worry though. The cell service is terrible but you manage to reach her and warn her to stay away from bears. She seems happy though, and even tells you she's made friends. Finally she graduates, and you're so happy she's safe. She brings her boyfriend home to meet you. It's the bear that ate your boyfriend.
Anyway, that's what happened to Gwen Higgins of the schomance series.

I'm rereading a Storm of Swords and it's so funny how fast Jamie falls in love with Brienne. He's constantly comparing her to Cercei (the only women he's ever loved), imagining her in pretty dresses, thinking that her eyes are beautiful, and checking out her muscles. He even helps her into the boat when they're trying to escape, when it would be in his best interest to let her drown.
Brienne: You killed your king
Jamie: Lemme get that pussy

A craftsman at work on a Staryk silver crown.
I recently finished reading Naomi Novik's Spinning Silver and I love Miryem's cold calculating determination.

[Iâve been posting some thoughts for new writers submitting to #literaryagents. Here are some final thoughts on #writing:
1. Stories must propel us toward an ending, but the end must feel like a new beginning
2. How a story makes you feel is as important as how it makes you think
3. Make sure there is a surprising phrase, a standout sentence, a startling image on every page
4. Take your characters to the limit. Itâs easier to withdraw from the cliffs edge than keep pushing up a hill
5. Every âminorâ character has a âmajorâ role in a story you have not chosen to tell yet.
6. Read your dialogue out loud and act out the parts. They are different voices and you need to hear the sounds you have made.
7. Imagine you have lost the first chapter and see how that improves your story.
8. Do not feel the need to tie up every loose end. A story must have an afterlife and an invitation to the reader to imagine what happens next.
9. It requires great effort and skill to write simply. Writing can feel like painting at times, what is layered and builds from strong foundations. If the foundation is full of obstructions, distractions and mess, it will be impossible to layer.
10. The reader can tell those writers who are enjoying the telling of the story. The energy and joy of writing sparkles off the page â even with those darker or more contemplative novels.
So, enjoy, plan, simplify and leave us with an afterlife!]

I'm reading The Magicians, after watching some of the show, and I can't believe Quentin is even more of an incel. 50 pages in and all he's done is complain about Julia not loving him, complain about not being happy despite having everything, and complain about not having a shot with the paramedic\Jane Chatwin.
I liked show Quentin, but I'm actively rooting against this little book turd.

I donât even go here but Iâm still so angry about what happened to Hunger Games. The CLEAR allegories and political messages that were swept to the side and/or completely ignored in favor of a cool sci-fi dystopia story and a love triangle. The casting of a white adult Katniss. The REMOVAL of all (or nearly all) disabilities from the movies. How every fucking YA book jumped on the hot new trend of Rebel Girl Against Evil Society yet NONE of them managed to grasp that the Hunger Games dystopia wasnât MADE UP based on some bullshit Hogwarts House sorting type system. And it wasnât some bullshit teenage wish fulfillment fantasy about being Special and teenagers being The Only Smart Ones but rather Katniss is caught up in a groundswell movement that is so much BIGGER THAN HER. How when the movies came out corporate America started making fashion & beauty âCapitolâ lines in a hilariously devastating display of irony. How nobody liked Mockingjay because it was âtoo darkâ as though that wasnât PRECISELY the point. How Katniss Herself was written off as though sheâs just a Mary Sue action hero and she was âannoyingâ and not uniquely gifted because she had STRUGGLED and STARVED and learned how to survive the hard way and she was ANGRY. It basically inspired a new genre and yet all of these books were so pale and uninspired in comparison and the movies though they largely follow the plot somehow STILL managed to miss the point and the whole message was lost because of both these things.

I'm rewatching the Hunger Games, and it occured to me that Katniss should have just pretended to be in a poly relationship with Peeta and Gale. The capitol would have eaten it up. Snow wouldn't have been suspicious of Katniss lying about loving Peeta because she and Gale would be right there in the open. The coolness between her and Peeta after the 74th games could be explained away as Katniss trying to soothe over a bit of awkwardness between two new metamours.
I would have loved to see Gale on the tour, stirring up even more revel sentiment while lending emotional support to Katniss and Peeta.
