9:15 a.m. Sunday morning moments before starting the Sydney World Pride 2023, Pride March across the harbour bridge. I moved to Sydney from NYC over a decade ago. And I had never attended a Sydney Mardi Gras parade. I started going to the NYC Gay Pride Parade in about 1985 or 86. And I went every year afterwards too. But after moving here, and as time has gone on, the parades have seemed less about activism and a little more about fun, partying and celebration (which is good!) But even though I’m glad that things are so much better for the LGBTQI+ community today than they were at my first NYC parade.. I still feel a deep sense of grief and loss when I think about all the people whom we’ve lost to HIV/AIDS and how scary it was for us back then (and it was even worse for the generations before me). I felt a little like maybe the sacrifices made, and the lives lost are being slowly forgotten. But then I thought about some of the vile hatefulness on display in different parts of the world towards gay people and especially trans people, and I decided that I needed to go this year and participate (plus if there was ever a year to participate in Sydney; this is it. World Pride AND Mardi Gras 2023) Maybe I’m just one old guy.. but if I stand with all these other people it’s harder for the haters to pretend we don’t exist or try to make us feel we are “less than” and that we have no value. So I put on the shirt and hat I wore to the NYC gay pride parade in 1988 and showed my support for the community. I used to spend a lot of time in old cemeteries when I was a kid (in the days before the word “emo” existed, I was just considered a weirdo) But I liked doing grave rubbings and photographing old statuary headstones. I found the carvings beautiful, but I also because I’d had experience with sadness. Being the youngest kid of parents who were both the youngest kids of their own large extended families, I began attending funerals at an early age. (around 6 years old I think) Plus one of my father and mother’s friends were the town mortician and his wife… and they had two children; one my age and one my sister’s age, so we spent a lot of time in a funeral home. I actually figured out one day I had attended about 14 funerals before I was 20 years old. Eventually i stopped counting and I lost track. So the combination of the artistry apparent in the old cemeteries coupled with my life experiences made graveyards a very familiar and comfortable place. There was even a graveyard that I passed every day on my walk home from school. I used to hang out there and read or daydream. I liked being in that peaceful place (free of judgemental adults who made comments about my shy, bookish, effeminate personality, and also completely devoid of school bullies) I felt calm surrounded by beautiful sculptures dedicated to people who were loved and missed. I haven’t really hung out in a cemetery since college, but on Friday I happened to be near an old cemetery, and I felt compelled to revisit my old pastime. It still felt the same. Peaceful and now in my middle age.. reflective. This time of year always makes me a little sad remembering those whom I’ve lost the previous year.. (and every year there are more) So this post is a reminder of a few things. Beauty is everywhere if you remember not to just look, but to see it. And although it’s important to remember those we’ve lost, don’t forget to remember your loved ones who are still living and spend as much time with them as possible, and remember to tell them how much you love them as much as possible. A single perfect rose. No filters, no tweaking of the image.. just the rose in all of its natural beauty. I absolutely love the colour too. It’s not a true red, and it’s definitely not pink.. A vase of Clivia, (also called bush lily)…. Clivia Miniata of the family Amaryllidaceae. Probably the easiest thing to grow in the whole garden. As long as they’re in the right spot, they go berserk.
