no because emma really was paul’s villain origin story. it’s said as a joke because she was in the first musical he hated but she really is. it’s implied first in what do you want paul and throughout the show that you can’t truly be infected if you don’t have “a want”. paul doesn’t UNTIL he grows closer to emma. he says to mcnamara that he wants there to be more between him and emma. for the first time, because of her, he has an actual, tangible WANT. that’s what makes him able to be infected. that’s what turns him into the villain by the end of the show
