do you have any cooking hcs for the sq family? what do you think regina’s secret for her lasagna is?
thanks for the ask anon!! nothing makes me happier than when people ask me for headcanons 🥰 i did a whole ramble on sq cooking hcs before, so pls excuse me while i paste them all in here ;))
emma can cook if she really wants to. and there’s the rub
most of her life, she has had no real reason to. especially living alone in boston, probably working weird hours and not sleeping much, she definitely just lives off, cup noodles & cereal
that said i think as soon as she starts having more custody of henry she starts making more of an effort - at first she enjoys being the cool fun mom (as opposed to regina) and winning henry over with hot chocolates and endless fries at granny’s
however, once she genuinely becomes a proper guardian to him, emma takes this so seriously, starts buying in fresh foods and cooking good hearty meals she can get him involved with, having taco nights and following recipes from the internet
and she’s actually pretty good! she realises she can have fun with it!
(what she cannot do, however, is bake. she will literally burn the apartment down somehow if she tries)
regina is pretty much the exact opposite - when she first came over to storybrooke, it was probably quite a harsh realisation that she had no idea how to cook for herself! she was raised as nobility all her life, so she had no need, and this was in a world without like, electricity
so lil miss perfectionist here does some intense googling, way too much grocery shopping that she’s very picky about, and spends a good long while teaching herself how to cook
(if emma teaches herself from youtube videos, regina probably found an online masterclass)
i actually think regina really struggled at first and probably burned the hell out of a lot of things, because she has literally never used an oven before. i find this very funny to think about. if someone wants to fic it, i would be very entertained by this
but eventually she gets the hang of it and thus takes great pride in her cookery skills, because this is something she taught herself, for herself! and then she finds baking and we multiply this joy by like 500%
(it’s one of her few hobbies/skills that she wasn’t manipulated or forced into, and she genuinely finds it so calming and distracting)
this goes up to such a ridiculous intense level when she has henry. because she is extreme mama bear extraordinaire and she will make sure her child receives the most nutritious, delicious, well balanced diet possible
(slight TW for disordered eating in the next few points)
(i also personally hc regina as having minor issues with food/eating, probably because of cora’s influence on her growing up and the constant pressure to be perfect and all that bullshit, which probably leaves her more susceptible to this world’s diet culture.
i think i hc this because i do project a lot onto regina
but i do think that discovering her love of cooking and baking really helps her with this. also, raising henry and making sure he’s eating well.)
i think between them, emma and regina have a pretty well balanced way of doing things. they both cook depending on the night, who wants to, who’s been working longer - regina maybe slightly more often just because she really enjoys it - and both help the other out, occasionally they’ll do a dish together as a lil couple’s thing and be really cute together
their cooking styles go well together too! emma makes cooking a more fun experience, and regina gives emma a few pointers that help her out.
emma meanwhile, is good at getting regina (and henry!) to expand their tastes, and also at creating a normalised, healthy balance of more nutritious food and ‘junk food’ nights
(also regina tries to teach emma to bake but this just never goes well. emma always just ends up eating batter)
as for regina's lasagne... we all know her special ingredient is red pepper flakes, but emma is still convinced there's something she's not telling. occasionally when regina's cooking it, emma will Lurk around the kitchen trying to figure it out. regina is totally aware of this and smug about it, she finds it funny and Will sweetly come up with decent excuses to get emma to leave the kitchen/go and do something else. henry finds these lasagne politics unbearable.
(also don't imagine emma whining asking about the secret ingredient for the hundredth time, wrapping her arms around regina's waist while she cooks, and regina totally ignoring her until she starts teasing her going 'it's love, isn't it? the secret ingredient is love?' and regina is like bitch i Will poison u again)

@jbthegift idk if you were joking or not but you know i’ll do anything for headcanons soooo... here ya are.
swan queen and their vision issues (lol):
emma canonically has to wear glasses. we know this. teenage emma was rocking the hipster glasses before they were even a thing.
however, i think just because of the way she was raised, she didn’t even know she needed glasses until pretty late. she just thought it was normal to bump into things and not be able to read stuff from far away. (maybe this is acc why child emma would get distracted/act out in school, because she genuinely couldn’t see and the people who worked at the home would be too overworked to notice)
but anyway, teenage emma briefly embraces the glasses once she gets them and realises hey! it’s fun to See. but then gradually as she grows up and starts working as a bailbondsperson she realises they’re pretty impractical and switches to contacts most of the time.
she wears her contacts so much most people don’t even know she wears glasses - she only puts them on in the evenings or when she’s super tired/irritated. she has this look like she is daring u to comment or make fun.
(regina thinks she looks cute in them. henry thinks it’s actually hilarious his big strong saviour mom is lowkey Blind)
regina’s always had decent vision, but after the curses all wear off and things settle in storybrooke and her body starts to, y’know, age again, she starts to need reading glasses just for long sessions doing paperwork and she HATES THIS WITH A BURNING PASSION. not that she would let anyone know it. there’s nothing wrong with needing reading glasses. it’s perfectly normal. (but she will fireball you if you see her with them)
(this is emma’s revenge. because emma also thinks regina is sooo cute in her glasses... but regina will shut this tf down if she says anything)
eventually they get to a point where both of them Have to be comfortable wearing their glasses of an evening and it’s kinda funny because they both still hate it but love it on each other.
(they also briefly struggle to navigate kissing with both of them wearing glasses. like, they just get in the way.)
henry has great eyesight! and he Taunts his mothers with this like the adorable lil shit he is
