OUATtober 2022 Day 5 - Favorite Scene

This is an extremely hard choice to make because OUAT has so many great scenes that all have numerous strengths but one that almost instantly came to the forefront in my mind was the flashback of Regina's execution in 2x10 "The Cricket Game".

It's such an amazing scene, especially in the context the rest of the episode provides but specifically the few scenes surrounding it. Lana Parrilla's acting is fabulous and conveys Regina's thought process so well. She refuses to beg for her life the girl that she blames for the murder of her fiance. Her hatred is so strong and she's so convinced that Snow is the guilty party and it would just be a betrayal to herself and her love for Daniel to beg for mercy the person that she should have killed. Not even her love for her father - the person that she loves most - is enough to outweigh the hatred in her heart. And that is significant both because we already know how much she loves him - she used his heart to cast the Curse and because in the present storyline her demeanor is completely different because of her love for Henry, her son. Her feelings for one person instantly play off of her feelings of another person and their strength and that serves greatly to show Regina's priorities.

Speaking of, she puts hurting and/or angering everyone who's rooting for her death over avoiding causing more pain to her father. He's there and she led him to believe she listened to him only to practically turn around and spit in his face just for the sake of doing the same to everyone else present. She prefers to go out as the woman they were all afraid of and hated rather than take the chance of making herself weak in their eyes and allowing them to forget the terror she's inflicted on all of them. If she can't have her revenge, at least she can have the reassurance that she wasn't the only one who suffered, that she will haunt these people in their nightmares even after her death, just like Daniel's death haunts her as it ripped out the love out of her heart. And perhaps there's also a touch of hope that Snow going through with the execution will reveal her true face, the not innocent side of her that Regina knows is there.

We get to see the confusion and almost hurt on Regina's face when Snow spares her anyway. She did everything right, she said all the correct awful things to ensure that at least her death goes the way she wants it to and yet... Of course, she didn't want to die but what she wanted even less was owing her life to Snow's mercy after what she believes Snow did to her and Daniel. She was ready to take even the little love for her father that she has kept in her heart to the grave just to stick to her agony and hate after Daniel's death. And then her expectations - her entire understanding of the situation, of the world she lives in - crumble when Snow spares her and she has to scramble to cover up her shock while everyone is still caught on Snow's decision and isn't looking at her. By the time they remember her, she has her insolent, downright offensive grin back on her face in perfect contrast with the tears she showed only to her father, in perfect contrast to her open, even pleading attitude in Storybrooke when she's fighting to not be separated from her son.

This scene does so much not just for Regina's character, but also for her relationships with other people, including Rumple (and if you look at the parallels with the present - Emma and Cora as well). I always liked it for the drama because if there's one thing Regina knows how to do, it's definitely stir a shitstorm into motion. I am in awe of the significance of the scene in Regina's story, however, and those people who were closest to her at the time. The golden era of OUAT was really pure gold.

All the respect to the Hawaii 5 0 one scene because I haven't watched it and can't judge it, but. Killian was BROKEN. Absolutely and heart-wrenchingly devastated. He was tortured within an inch of his life (… or death, I guess) and practically left to slowly drop into a pit of eternal despair.

Killian was not easy to break. He would get injured and get back up with a sneer and an "I'm alright love you should see the other guy".

But to reach that point? The point of telling Emma she should have kept herself safe instead of saving him from this torment, to hold on to her like she was his lifeline, to SMILE that small smile from the first bit of hope he'd gotten since he ended up there?

The relief upon watching this episode for the first time was visceral. For two episodes we knew Hook was being tortured, we saw him try and fail to limp to safety, we saw his resolve and defiance desperately hold on, we saw him accept his fate, we saw him preferring to be tortured further than hurt his friends… And then he got saved! And he had no witty comeback, no effort to hide his pain. He just fucking collapsed in the arms of his beloved, of his saviour, and held on for a moment to realize that it was real, she was there, he was finally safe.

Add to that some amazing, jaw-dropping, emotional acting by Colin O'Donoghue, how can you get any better than that?

Anyway vote for ouat. Because this whole torture mini arc existing is probably what caused a chain reaction of me understanding and accepting I love whump, so. I wouldn't be here torturing blorbos if it weren't for it 🤣" @piracytheorist

"Angel is kidnapped to give his blood to Drusilla in a ritual to make her better - she’s sick and was turned into a vampire by Angelus (Angel’s evil alter ego) many years ago. He killed her family as part of turning her and she went insane because of it. As Angel is a vampire too, holy water burns him, so she tortured him by pouring this over his skin even 😬 he’s then stabbed through the hand in the ritual and is rescued and collapses to the floor. Amongst other things!"

So I just rewatched OUAT 2x03 Lady of the Lake, and in that episode Emma witnessed Cora shape shifting from Lancelot to herself. Which just makes me so pissed that she automatically assumed it was Regina who killed Archie in The Cricket Game, when she clearly knew glamouring oneself is a thing. Yes, they didn’t know Cora had come to Storybrooke at that point, and had no reason to believe she was there considering they left her behind in the EF, but COME ON. It’s a fucking magical world for them. I mean Emma, you literally just did magic. Is it really so hard to believe someone else was pretending to be Regina? Okay, rant over.
