Y'all, the world is sleeping on what NASA just pulled off with Voyager 1

The probe has been sending gibberish science data back to Earth, and scientists feared it was just the probe finally dying. You know, after working for 50 GODDAMN YEARS and LEAVING THE GODDAMN SOLAR SYSTEM and STILL CHURNING OUT GODDAMN DATA.

So they analyzed the gibberish and realized that in it was a total readout of EVERYTHING ON THE PROBE. Data, the programming, hardware specs and status, everything. They realized that one of the chips was malfunctioning.

So what do you do when your probe is 22 Billion km away and needs a fix? Why, you just REPROGRAM THAT ENTIRE GODDAMN THING. Told it to avoid the bad chip, store the data elsewhere.

Sent the new code on April 18th. Got a response on April 20th - yeah, it's so far away that it took that long just to transmit.

And the probe is working again.

From a programmer's perspective, that may be the most fucking impressive thing I have ever heard.

Couldn't find a way to mention it on the last post, but the blind snakes aren't, like, slaves to the owls as might be interpreted from that guy's description. They're literally employed by the owls, like nannies or maids. This is why Mrs. Plithiver is so Mary Poppins-esque in her speech and mannerisms.

So yes they do basically act as domestic servants, but it's not against their will. They have lives, relationships, and hobbies outside of their work. Mrs. P has a whole arc in one of the later books where she decides she wants to become a harp-player, and it's really heartwarming to see her find something she loves to do for her own sake.

There's also a whole other (non-blind) species of snake that the owls of the Northern Kingdoms form a different symbiotic relationship with but we don't have time to get into that lol

#AND there's a pair of flying snakes that are basically part of a big sweet family with Hortense and the eagles if I'm remembering right #there are a lot of snakes in this series and they're all great characters is I guess what I'm saying lol

Obviously I have to agree with most of what he says-- a ton of the incredible, nuanced worldbuilding gets lost, and some of the characters and plot had to be changed dramatically to create a consistent tone and story that fit three entire books into a single film's runtime. Metal Beak being a separate character from Kludd, in particular, was a HUGE change that definitely affects the dynamics of the main conflict.

THAT SAID, I think that with the limitations they had, and especially with the assumption that it would need to serve as a standalone story without the luxury of 12 other books' worth of content, I personally think they NAILED it.

I'm delighted he brought up Hortense and the eagles, some of my favorite side characters in the entire series, but their story would have needed a half hour to tell all on its own, and it would have distracted from Soren's quest to find his heroes and reunite with his family. Same with the bats "quanking" the owlets' blood, or the the bobcat attack, or the rest stop with the adorable puffin family. He didn't even mention some of the other memorable moments from these books, like the moon-blaze chamber or the mirror lake or sneaking into the roots of the Great Tree to spy on Parliament. They had to cut SOMETHING.

So for these reasons, as well as all the many, many things they DID get right, I will defend this movie to my grave as a successful adaptation.

Is it a perfect adaptation? Hell no! Digger is reduced to a wacky goofball, Allomere and Metal Beak are both pretty generic cliche villains, and a lot of the slow-building mystery and escalating stakes are lost in the condensed plot. (Also the setting is Australia-coded for some reason despite 95% of the main characters being North American species?) But it's a 90-minute movie adaptation of a children's fantasy series--it was NEVER GOING TO BE perfect.

For my money, it was more than close enough. It was still beautiful, and funny, and full of heart and wide-eyed wonder. It still touched on the same themes of friendship and what it means to be brave and what stories about heroism can do to inspire others to do what's right. And that's all I've ever wanted from the series. <3
