i just saw a tiktok about how the writing of shu han leans into bad asian stereotypes from someone that had only seen the show and people were coming after him saying, “oh he doesn’t know what he’s talking about he hasn’t read the books” which i don’t think is a valid criticism of his point. “contextualizing” harmful writing with in-universe justifications doesn’t really change the fact that a writer has, at best, leaned heavily on stereotypes as a crutch for world building. (and in the show, used racism as a form of relationship development.) and this isn’t to say grishaverse is inherently “problematic” or that you shouldn’t read/watch it. think critically of the media you consume and be mindful of what you write.
