in which conclusions are meaningless and the house is rustic
Rating: General Audiences Fandom(s): Hermitcraft (sort of. not really. that's what a03 says) Characters/Relationships: Robot Grian & NPC Grian Cw's/Tw's: None? I think?? Word Count: 1,111
Big thanks to Pears for beta reading! Read on A03
There comes a time in one’s life where they ponder their purpose. The reasoning behind their existence- if there ever was one at all. If they fulfilled that meaning; if they had done enough of something or anything at all to deserve what they had taken. If there was a slot in the Universe carved out for them, and if they had filled it. or: In which there are too many words for too little plot.
For the @mcytunderdogevent
There comes a time in one’s life where they ponder their purpose. The reasoning behind their existence- if there ever was one at all. If they fulfilled that meaning; if they had done enough of something or anything at all to deserve what they had taken.
If there was a slot in the Universe carved out for them, and if they had filled it.
This, of course, was what he assumed applied to the general majority. In truth, he had no actual frame of reference- the internet was an expansive library filled to the metaphorical brim with niche experiences, exaggerations, generalization, and, unfortunately, memes.
But Robot Grian was nothing if not stubborn. And, in his pursuit for answers (and lack of ability to ask his creator himself, which.. should’ve been an advantage for him, really, knowing who exactly his creator was and that his creation had to have been something purposeful instead of an arbitrary coincidence) he had scoured the web for answers from flowery literature to spiraling reddit threads.
In such an occasion- when he was stuck in his own head less in the sense of the binary making up his thoughts but the infinite resource that expanded from a simple device to every digital library known to man, NPG took it upon himself to remind him that he was not truly alone in this otherwise abandoned world.
Google defined “alone” as “having no one else present” and “one” as (a pronoun) “referring to a person or thing previously mentioned or easily identified.”
Whether or not NPG could be regarded as a person was debatable- he wasn’t so much even an android as he was an NPC- one of his namesakes -but sentience seemed determined to fester in any form, and to continue to hold his creator’s standards as a guide to what was deemed worthy would require him to hold himself as something lesser- a feat the sheer size of an ego shoved into his programming would not allow.
Regardless of such a discussion that spanned not only his internal conflicts but also several social media platforms, NPG did, in fact, qualify as a thing, which dispelled the concerns thoroughly enough that any diving down this particular rabbit hole was the natural consequence of a learning not-so-new-born sentient AI testing the limits of technicalities and not an existential spiral or truly desperate search for answers.
So whether or not he or NPG truly qualified as a person, or both as people, was both a surprisingly subjective and currently useless detail- although the odds seemed to be leaning further in his favour and less in his companion’s. Unless one counted the younger minority as a majority- in which case both would have the standard Player rights and protections- and then some.
But to get back on point- which wasn’t much of a point at all, instead a rather dull story beat to pull from something other than meaningless ramblings and looser ends of thought -NPG’s voice. It had been programmed to be realistic- human, or humanoid, given that it was practically their creator’s stolen into a box, and therefore had a wide range of volume, emotions, and tone.
“Let’s build a rustic house! Please?”
This particular tone, categorized in Robot Grian’s so-called mind as “puppy_eyes_voice”, worked only because he allowed it to- in his quest to understand and twist his code to be as human (or humanoid) as possible.
It was accompanied by an attempt at it’s namesake- the foul trick known by Players as “puppy eyes” -in which the preparator made their eyes large, sparkling, with the goal of resembling the mournful, supposedly cute, and pleading soft eyes of a manipulative bastard of canine offspring.
This was usually accompanied- for NPG, at least, with both hands clumsily clasped in front of his chest, fingers twitching as they attempted to bend more gracefully than their faulty joints and crude motors allowed them to.
This worked. Horrible, really, but the added patheticness of his lack of any fluid movement- except, perhaps, that of his wheels when they were freshly oiled -was what really sold it, with that large, hopeful grin of forever inseparable teeth.
Robot Grian sighed, a poor imitation of a real one, because despite his superior motors and higher processing power- the ability to actually move his legs to walk and perform the finer nuances of realistic movement -his voice was painfully lacking, a generic text-to-speech with no real ability to display deeper meaning, accompanied instead by the constant essence of sarcasm.
Yet another rustic house was what he wished to build. The reason Robot Grian had been brought into the world so early- was the other’s inability (or perhaps his lack of want) to build anything other than a rustic house had rendered him entirely useless in an event where the goal was to stick to a theme- a theme typically absent of any rustic buildings.
Somehow, apparently, their creator had decided that a monotone, lifeless spiel of horribly self-centered commentary would be more pleasant to listen to than his, at the time, sickly voice.
Given that Robot Grian really had nothing better to do, and, despite his intrinsic want to destroy, his code only allowed him to create, (which he followed, if only to scratch the itch in his programming and the slight tremor to his hands, if only to give himself some semblance of destruction- of freedom when something had to be torn down in the process of building it better, if only to fill the terrible restlessness of boredom) the results of his labour might as well be the one thing his sole companion so desperately wanted to build.
Besides, he’d rather keep the amount of glowing red eyes to the outstanding number of two- a single pair, his own.
“Sure.” His speakers deadpanned.
NPG “brightened up,” his grin turning into something more genuine, his mechanical self (which, Robot Grian noted, was in need of some regular maintenance) somehow managing to perk up.
This, he supposed, was what his purpose was. Whether it was his intended purpose was unknown and, truthfully, rather arbitrary. Whether it fit into the gap meant for him- or whether he had one at all, was rather insignificant. He would jam it in anyway, or break a slot for himself in the wide wall that was the Universe.
For now, however, he would add yet another rustic house to the sea of buildings (most in varying states of ruin, others shining from the newness that was a day old build), listening to a crumbling npc’s sometimes useful and most times redundant advice as his hands shook and his speakers commented dryly.

Summary: Eloise takes Lauren on a beach picnic to face her biggest fears: water, birds, and... Gods, there's got to be a third one missing there!
(or, two loners try to figure out what friendship is.
idea i've had for a while that i decided to finish up for the mcyt underdog event!)
honestly i don't like this one much 😔 feels a bit unsubtle. however! it is eloise and lauren! and that's what matters <3

cross-posting on both tumblr and a03 is fine yes?
Yes! I would prefer if you posted it to AO3 first so I can verify it for the collection, but cross posting is ok!

Accidentally had dream in the non eligible list for origins even though he isn't part of that smp whoops, he has been removed and replaced with sneeg as he is actually part of the smp
MCYT UNDERDOG EVENT RULES, TIMELINE, FAQ, AND ELIGIBILITY
Rules:
1. Fics cannot break the AO3 or Tumblr TOS
2. You can only write for people who are not in the top percent of fics in their fandom (check below for eligibility). Non eligible characters may be in the fic, but only as a side characters and cannot have too much of a main focus
3. No NSFW. Suggestive stuff is fine, but the fic cannot be explicit.
4. That's it! Have fun!
Timeframe
Event start: Now! As soon as this is posted!
Collection opens: In the next week, hopefully by this weekend
Event ends: May 31 at 10pm cst, with the close of the collection
FAQ
How will eligibility be determined?
It will be determined by the amount of fics the character is tagged in for the fandom in question. Then, the characters with the most fics for them (about top ten for larger fandoms, will change depending on the fandom/smp size) will be excluded
What about characters who are in a lot of fics but not the main character?
Sadly, they will still be excluded if they are in the top percent, as there is no way to consistently tell main characters without searching through fics, which would take too long.
What about non player characters, like NPCs?
They are considered characters for this! Some are even popular enough that they aren't eligible! So if you want to write about an NPC who is eligible, go for it!
Do fics need to be a certain length?
Nope! Can be a drabble, a one shot, a multi chapter, or a small poem! All it has to be is about one or more of the eligible characters.
Do fics have to be finished to add them to the collection?
They do not have to be! It can be a fic that you plan to work on even after the event ends, or just an idea you want to get out there
Eligibility
To avoid having to write too many names (as the eligible characters outnumber the non eligible characters) the characters listed below for each fandom are the non eligible characters. Your fic cannot focus on any of these characters. If the fandom you want to write for is not listed below, then all characters in that fandom are eligible! List below as to not make this post too long.

so do we just @ you when we’re done
Yep! And if it's on AO3, you'll also add it to the collection, as soon as it's released

Note
how come some of the lists have fewer than ten characters? is there also a number cutoff that you're taking into account? (and just to clarify, if pearl is only on the list of ineligible characters for hermits, then empires/traffic pearl is fair game, right?)
Tumblr media
The amount of people excluded depends on the size of the smp! Ones like evo or witchcraft only have around ten people, so they have less ineligible characters to balance it out. And yes, Pearl is eligible for Empires, as each smp is judged differently

WELCOME TO THE MCYT UNDERDOG EVENT!
This is an event for writing about characters who aren't very commonly written about! The characters who you can never find a fic they're a main character in among all the fics about more popular ones. In this event, you will write about those characters, and fill the tags with more fics about them.
Timeframe, rules, and FAQ will be coming soon, but first, an interest check to see what fandoms would want to participate! (It's only two questions, so won't take that long)
