"Your mother said you collected books as well? You have so many special editions in your apartment, I just assumed they were to help you look more pretentious,” she teased. “How did you start?”

Draco’s laugh was its own reward. “Ah, well, that is a story…” he mused, pulling Hermione further into the stacks. “It started when I was at Hogwarts.”

He stopped in front of a section towards the rear wall. Everything around them was covered in dust, but this section was better maintained and much newer. She found it odd that it was so far away from the front when the books here were clearly accessed regularly.

“See, there was this girl… But I was too much of an idiot to own up to my feelings for her.” He turned to her. “And she went on and on about this book.” He pulled forth a copy of Hogwarts: A History and Hermione laughed.

“I had to know why, so I bought it. Then there was another. I bought it, of course,” —he touched the spine of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them— “and more after that. Eventually, when I started to realise what I was feeling, I just started buying books I thought she’d like. Of course, my father would have been furious if he found them, but he never came up here much.” He pulled a Jane Austen novel from the shelf, placing his palm over the cover tenderly. “It was my way of trying to imagine what it could be like if… But I knew I had to hide how I felt. From her, from my father… from everyone.”

Oh, I brought you a gift too, Hermione.” Theo reached into his pocket and unfolded a small square of material, bringing out his wand to fill it with air — it was another balloon.

“My father will hear about this!” shrieked the miniature Draco balloon. She thought it was a fair imitation of what the real Draco would sound like if he sucked helium.

As it inflated quickly, Hermione realised the balloon was Draco. “Uh, thanks Theo, this is—”

Draco sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose and flicking a wand to pop the balloon. “Honestly, between you and Weaslette… I don’t know why I keep you around.”

“You’re no fun, Drake. But don’t worry, I brought a spare.” He winked at Hermione.
