maria and Louise sketches!! Got too tired to do digital so have these. Ive been gone for a while but im still here!.

Maria looks weirdly endearing in the first pic lol

The maria and Mario next to eachother is supposed to show the hair similarities, Marias hair is basically Marios but with more and i thought luigis hair cutoff was even more obvious so i didnt bother with that. I havent decided on their full outfit yet so i think im just gonna alter between them. the last is queen boo talking the ear(?) off Bowser hehe, i love bad guys with sharp lashes (they're not whiskers on queen boo they're lashes i swear).

bowser gb au sketches!

this was sort of easier than the mario bros, basically it was supposed to be an exact copy of bowser LOL, as recognizable as possible because thats just what makes sense to me. the hair was hard to get though, went between ponytail, long flowy fire hair, just keeping it same length, sides, idk lots of ideas. she's still bowser to me idk what the heck else to name her X(, its beyond gender tbh its iconic.

maybe i'll come up with a different color palette to make it more distinct? like my own little mario au that'd be fun!. anyway look how cute little bowser jr is, maybe bowser jr would be named bowsette instead!! i mean.. its a little bowser..bows-ette. i am jeanius

random sketches

i've been trying to improve, as i dont think i can go beyond where i am if i dont have an understanding of digital basics. i've learned a l ot is effected by the brush you use. flow, thickness, softness etc etc so im trying out differnt ones. now that im typing it out this is very obvious digital art 101 but i have no teacher okay! im only learning this from observing other artists and doing comparisons, theirs look so soft and natural and mine looks so stale i hate it!!. feels frustrating using a new medium and you have to start from all over again huuuuuu

queen boo kidnapping maria for the nth time for yet another louise’s mansion

at some point marios either comically afraid of king boo or completely over it and him getting kidnapped is casual. so i imagine king boo just BURSTING into his room being like “.. you know what im here for” and mario, as he gets stuffed into a portrait at three in the morning, is like “im tired of this grandpa” WELL THATS TOO DAMN BAD.. luigi is about to mansion.

maria and louise sketch #2

maria(marie?mari?) and louise outfit sketches! + paper sketch i thought was pretty. i tried a new way of coloring for their faces, cause they would stay the same. i didnt like the way it turned out, looks weird and plastic-y but tell me what you think?. you can tell where i gave up coloring right loll? pls accept this sloppyness as this is simply concept sketches, i was unsure which one i liked the best so i just wanted to get the idea across with simple lines. i also did luises hair wrong i just couldnt get the hat right sorry

i faced even more difficulties than i mentioned in the last post, especially concerning “keeping things canon looking”. another thing about the mario universe girlies is i’ve never seen them wear pants either, but mario and luigi do wear pants. do you keep the original design for recognition? or do you try and match what nintendo would do?, ok they’ll just wear denim overall dresses then with white stockings, but they’re plumbers? that would just be impractical why would they wear skirts?. what about denim overall shorts?, that seems like a compromise. still pretty impractical though.. and i havent even started with turtlenecks or collar cuffs or discussed the length of their sleeves. their clothes technically shouldn’t change at all, but im also thinking about how nintendo designs girl characters and try to match that to make it as canon looking as possible

now onto explaining the results!

first sketch - is just their original outfits, the either thick and wooly or thin hugging-the-neck type of turtleneck people draw them in. gloves, boots(i got tired ok) all the good stuff. there is no actual reason to even change their outfits so this makes sense.

second sketch - is when i took the whole “never seen a mario girl in pants” very literally, the difference in dress length i felt would differentiate them and i think it fits. white stockings because it jst makes sense. (again the whole difference in turtleneck thickness and the sleeve length difference is not like for real its more like presenting different options cus i couldnt settle on one, thats why in the next drawing the sleeve length is switched) they might look like this if nintendo designed them, but again it seems unpractical?, not something they would actually wear. 

third sketch - might be a compromise?, just realised they’re called dungarees woops,. balloon like/wide end, makes it sort of look dress-like at the same time. something nintendo might settle on if they realised their boys are a special case but still wanted some girlypop. (basically if they got over themselves)

- and then the uncolored layer and the little maria sketch. i like all the outfits i dont think i can decide on something permanent :((. 

im thinking about doing this with bowser too!,would be an interesting thing trying to capture his likeness. build, plastron, hair - whatever. (bowsette i pretend i do not see) and i might do something mischevious when im done >:D(its lesbian bowuigi, thats the mischevious thing)

so i had this random idea that i just COULDN’T get out of my head.

i hadn’t really seen any genderbend of mario and luigi as much as i had seen peach. and when i did see some, they were mostly just anime girls with red and green caps on. so i kept wondering how a girl version, *with their original form in mind*, would look like. 

that’s sort of the difficulty of this thing,how would their bodytype translate to a femme form?, what would i do without their mustaches? it’s their trademark! how could you tell its mario and luigi without their iconic mustaches?. what about their noses?.  also using references from the already existing girl characters in the mario universe, most of them wear lipstick, would mario and luigi have to wear lipstick then? what about their hair?. but im also thinking about how nintendo designs girl characters and try to match that to make it as canon looking as possible

now onto explaining the pictures. 

1 - the motive behind the lipstick idea. shows their hair with and without their hats, how much would be visible with them on. to sort of match the og design instead of having their bangs under the hats which just looks funky.

2 - paper mario/smaller looking/manga design, mario and luigi have very expressive faces and body shapes and i didnt want the genderbend to prevent that bc “girls r supposed to be pretty statues buh buh buh” that typically makes them look stiff or like just hot girls in a masceraude. m&l have a typical “squash and stretch duo” (i swear this makes sense pls look it up). the bodies are supposed to look neutral, that could belong to either the guys or girls and shows their natural body shape while holding the same goofyness.

3/4 - lipstick ideas, a natural shade vs the brown matching the OG’s mustaches and their hair. the brown and natural lipstick shade works better(imo) than something the girls from peach’s universe would typically wear like red or pink. the brown and nude color just sort of reflects their whole “we’re just two italian guys from brooklyn who get down and dirty with our sewage plumbing job” so i dont think they’d wear anything bright even if they were girls, if they even wear lipstick at all!! it doesnt matter which one really. 

5/6 - rough body sketches. the blue one is their bodies more semi-“realistically” or just more like the usual art style, you can see the curve and flops. the red is more rounded up, basically how those 3d nintendo models of mario and luigis bodies, simpler shapes, smooth with no interruption, how nintendo would model their bodies in games basically. you can see the simple little tummy luigi has on louise’s body too. basically a “if u remove the boobs its basically them” as identical bodies as possible. 

this is obviously not the finished product, as i still have their clothes to go. maybe i’ll even add voice headcanons?. its like a little project. again, i dont know where this urge came from but i love complicating already existing character design :D
