Burning question in my mind about aus is always this; why did the murders happen....?

Right off the bat, let me say, none of what I’m about to say excuses any actions, nor do I think he’s a redeemable character. I simply seek to explain.

That being said: TW alcoholism, murder (obviously), abuse, intrusive thoughts, trauma, mental illness shown in a negative light

To explain why the killings happened, you'd have to trace far, far back in Afton's family line. There was some sort of nasty violent streak throughout the men of his family going back generations in his family. His father, William Sr, was a killer himself, but finding himself in the "fortunate" position of serving in World War Two, he was able to turn that brutal and carnal desire into something "productive" and even nominally heroic. Returning home after that, his wife found him a changed man, and when they had a son together, William, it was... in some sense inevitable what did happen.

NOW with that out of the way we can get into exactly what the deal is with William specifically that led to it all. Much like his father, William suffered from similar violent intrusive thoughts throughout his life. He was raised in a very very lonely and isolated environment, especially when his mother left when he was about 8 (good for her). He had a little moment as a kid where you know... classic William... he killed a rabbit that belonged to the one friend he really had, and after that, it was just isolation with him and his father til college. Growing up under someone like that, it was hard to find a "right" moral code, and then for William he experiences BPD which, of course, doesn't help in this case.

Before he goes to college, he does start drinking which leads into alcoholism as an attempt to cope with his inability to process his own thoughts and live with himself like that.

Through college and up until the death Evan Afton, he struggles with these things in turn - the trauma from his childhood, BPD, alcoholism, the intrusive thoughts, etc etc but nothing ever really "happens". He gets close in certain incidents like the ... scissor incident which shall go unexplained for now, but never commits to anything. The thoughts just are there constantly. They all compound unsurprisingly and in 1983 when Evan does die, it triggers a veritable nervous break in William that leads into the killing of Charlie Emily. It likely would have ended there too but with the death of Elizabeth it created another "switch" of sorts in his mind. Up til that point, he could rationalize he wasn't the worst person in his life, ie, not the only murderer (Mike holds that honor in his mind as well). With the death of Elizabeth however, it created that shift in his mind where he began to view himself as the sort of "villain" and then past that it didn't really seem worth it to attempt to keep trying and trying in what felt like pointless efforts to be some good person. After you've killed a few kids, it's kind of hard to stop - right?

TLDR, it was an unfortunate mix of familial history, mental illness, addiction, and tragic circumstances that led to the deaths. It's hard to say what would have prevented them... maybe if Will and Henry never met it wouldn't have happened.

If you think about the fnaf timeline, Henry was about 40-45 when his daughter died correct? Well, what would he look like as a kid 20 years before? He'd either be 10-17 in the 50s. So that’s where my idea comes in:

as far as au henry goes thats def more @murderbaboon‘s boy but i talked it over with him and he’s a good mormon boy very good mormon boy he worked as a deacon in the church - he ALSO did mechanic shit which was neat, he basically built a car and motorcycle for himself  the football team was constnatly trying to recruit him and he would always say no
