So just a little update for you guys, I’ve handed in my notice at work. Two weeks and I’ll be unemployed. Part of me is relieved that I won’t be in such an awful and toxic place, the other part of me is terrified. While I have savings, a car and a roof over my head, I’m terrified I’ll run out of all those things before I find something else.
I also feel somewhat ashamed that I gave up the fight, but I was worn down to the point where I didn’t feel like I had a choice.
However my first thought was to get creative to keep myself occupied and my mind distracted. Here’s hoping I’ll have something fun for you in the next few weeks. But I just wanted to update you guys on where I am mentally.
I still love you all and I’ll still be here for you if you need me xx

Of course the most heartbreaking thing is I don’t think this is rock bottom and I already feel like giving up. I don’t think I can handle it getting worse.
Just a quick announcement, I’m in a really bad way right now and just this moment realised there’s no one to hold my hand through it. I didn’t want advice or someone to “fix” it. I just wanted someone to sit in it with me for a while.

Mrs Keller
Director Keller x Reader
Word Count: 7603
Keller never thought much about the way people spoke about him. He was an observant man, he needed to be in his role as Director, but at no point did he think people spoke about him behind his back in any other regard than a boring, mundane, professional one.
It was his assistant who had alerted him to the fact that he was wrong, and she did so in the most surprising way.
‘Gemma?’ He called from inside his office.
She came scurrying in, pushing her glasses up her nose. ‘Sir?’
‘Can we cancel the meeting with Miss Clare? I don’t want to see her in this building again.’ Keller sighed, annoyed.
‘Of course.’ Gemma nodded, frowning but half smiling in confusion. ‘Any reason you don’t want to see her again, sir?’
Keller liked Gemma a lot, she was a great assistant, she didn’t take crap from anyone and always made sure he got to where he needed to be on time. She had become a great friend of his, especially during the Skrull incident.
‘She’s a pain in my ass.’ Keller breathed harshly through his nose. ‘Wildly inappropriate and not the kind of person I want wandering around this agency.’
Gemma stood up straight and frowned. ‘Oh, I thought you and her were… getting along?’
‘What do you mean?’ It was Keller’s turn to frown.
Gemma just smiled. ‘Sir, it’s evident she likes you and we just presumed with all the time you were spending together…’ she rolled her hand to indicate something more, but Keller just didn’t understand.
‘We were talking about a potential client.’ He explained.
‘Sir, you know, it’s okay to admit you’ve been out of the game a while.’ She gently closed the door behind her, making sure no one could hear the conversation. ‘But you really should give Miss Clare a chance. She is lovely when you get to know her, single, very well regarded and would be in complete understanding of the demands of your job.’
Keller almost laughed. ‘Gemma, I do not need dating advice.’
‘I’m not offering advice, I’m just saying, it’s okay to relieve a little stress every now and again.’
Keller came around his desk, mostly to stop Gemma speaking.
‘I promise, I’m fine.’ Keller smiled.
Gemma let a breath go. ‘Okay, well, if you change your mind, let me know. We all worry that you’re a bit lonely these days.’
Keller nodded. He knew Gemma meant well and he always appreciated it, but he really didn’t need to be set up on a date with anyone.
‘I’m not.’ Keller shook his head, feeling a lot less stressed than he did before his assistant's concern. ‘Out of interest, who’s ‘we’?’
Gemma suddenly looked a little sheepish, making Keller chuckle as he grabbed his suit jacket from the back of his chair. ‘It just slipped out.’ She sighed.
‘It’s been a long day,’ Keller nodded. ‘But you do need to work on your poker face.’
Gemma just rolled her eyes about to leave his office. ‘By the way, you’ve got three profiles to go over and seven operational reports to read before tomorrow. You got time tonight?’ She teased, making him laugh.
‘I’m sure I’ll find time.’ He nodded, opening the door for her and turning the lights off before leaving for the day. Fury was waiting outside, holding a file, he liked the young man a lot, he had a lot of potential. ‘Fury, what can I do for you this evening?’
‘Actually sir, I was just dropping my team reports off to Gemma.’ He gave a polite smile to Keller’s assistant, who took his thick file and began to sort it into tomorrow’s work.
‘Actually, just put it in the case.’ He said, taking his long coat from the coat rack next to Gemma’s desk. ‘I’ll get it read before tomorrow. Start a new day with a clean slate.’
‘Are you sure? You’ve got quite a lot to get through as it is.’ Gemma said, hesitating before putting it in the briefcase Keller would take home with him.
Keller just smiled and whipped his dark scarf over his head. Gemma shook her head sighing, before putting the files away and standing the brief case up.
‘Goodnight everyone. As always, good work today, let’s continue to raise the bar tomorrow.’
‘Yes sir.’ Fury said, stepping to one side.
Gemma watched her boss leave the office, sitting back with her arms folded and sighing.
They waited until Keller was well out of ear shot before speaking about anything.
‘He doesn’t want to see Miss Clare anymore.’ Gemma said, immediately.
‘What? Why not?’ Fury whined. ‘She was great for him.’
‘He said she was a pain in the ass and inappropriate.’ Gemma shrugged. ‘I guess he doesn’t want to date anyone.’
‘Damn.’ Fury shook his head. ‘Well, he needs to do something, he’s been different.’
‘I think he’s lonely.’ Gemma agreed. ‘Maybe he just needs to get laid.’
Fury snorted, chuckling as he began wandering away. There was no way he was talking about his boss’s sex life, getting him a date was one thing, laid was another thing entirely.
Gemma looked down the corridor where Keller had disappeared and wondered why her boss was so reluctant to meet anyone. It was clear he lived a rather solitary life, some company wouldn’t do any harm and maybe he would unwind when at work.
Fury was right though, in the recent weeks, Keller just wasn’t himself.
Keller took a breath as he got into his car, he didn’t realise the extent to which his assistant was concerned for him.
He could tell from the way Fury spoke, he was the other one who talked about his personal life. Keller couldn’t deny he was slightly annoyed that he was talked about in such a way, but at the same time, he couldn’t let it bother him.
Keller pulled out of the parking lot and began driving in the opposite direction to his home. He wasn’t stupid, he knew he was always being watched, but he was keeping a promise.
Keller pulled up outside the airport and pulled out the first file in his briefcase. Almost twenty minutes had gone by before he spotted the person he was waiting for.
As per his promise, Keller put the file away and stepped out of the car, striding towards you.
You walked towards him, dragging two cases and carrying a duffel bag over your shoulder. He wished you’d picked up a trolley, but it just wasn’t your style.
‘Hello darling.’ Keller smiled, placing a soft kiss to your lips and taking a case. ‘Good flight?’
‘It was okay.’ You shrugged, smiling widely. ‘I mostly slept.’
Keller opened the back of the car and carefully put your luggage away.
‘I hope you haven’t been working too hard.’ You raised an eyebrow seeing his briefcase in the back seat of his big black car. Keller gave a small smile like he’d been found out. ‘Richard, I knew you couldn’t be trusted.’
‘You were away for too long.’ Keller chuckled, taking your duffel bag to place next to your cases and opened the front door to get in.
‘So, now it’s my fault you’re a workaholic?’ You teased.
‘I wouldn’t never blame you for that.’ Keller shook his head, knowing would never say a bad word against his wife.
He drove you both home, listening to your stories about your adventures in Europe. Keller was a little sad he couldn’t come with you, but he had other duties and no one actually knew he was married.
You made it home and Keller told you to go inside, make some tea and wait for him to bring your things in. Keller was like that, he didn’t like it when you got overtired, you always got a little moody and it wouldn’t make anyone happy.
When he finished taking your cases up to the bedroom, Keller came back down, removing his jacket and tie so that he was left in just his shirt and trousers. He saw you sitting on the sofa opposite the fire you had already started. You were reading through a book with some fascination.
‘What you got there?’ Keller said, grabbing the brief case and settling down next to you, one arm on the back of the sofa behind you.
You smiled, pushing your glasses up your nose a little. ‘It’s a Greek tragedy.’
‘In original Greek?’ Keller nodded, impressed. ‘You learn that while you were away?’
‘I did.’ You smiled, gently biting your lip. You knew how much he loved when you mastered new skills like that.
Keller smiled warmly. ‘I missed you.’ He said, his voice much lower than it had been, grabbing your full attention.
You turned to look at him fully. ‘I missed you too.’ You tilted your head, observing his beautiful blue eyes. ‘I really hope you haven’t been overworking yourself.’ On a much more serious note.
Keller bowed his head. ‘You know how I am when you take your trips. I do okay for the first week and then I just get a little restless.’
‘Well, I’m back now.’ You shuffled closer and ran your fingers gently through his hair above his ear. Keller inhaled a little deeper, he really did miss you.
Keller gently grabbed your hand and kissed your knuckles, he smiled cheekily.
‘I have the best story for you.’ He said, excitedly.
You just laughed knowing it would be good from his smile.
‘So,’ he quickly pushed his glasses up. ‘I call Gemma in just as I’m about to leave and tell her not to let Miss Clare back into my office-‘
‘Who’s Miss Clare?’ You frowned, worried she’d been mentioned before and you’d forgotten.
‘Uh, she was a potential client, but it doesn’t really matter.’
‘Okay.’ You nodded, getting reinvested in the story.
‘So, I don’t want her back in my office, I don’t even want her in the building again, and Gemma asks why. I said, she was just a pain in the ass, a little inappropriate and I actually have a feeling she was cooking books in her previous employment.’ Keller swallowed watching your face reacting to his story. ‘Anyway, Gemma then starts to say she’s concerned that I’m lonely and give me dating advice.’ That made you laugh. ‘I told her I was fine, obviously I didn’t tell her the real reason to back off, but I did think you’d find that funny.’
‘It is.’ You said, calming down. ‘What are you going to do if she tries to set you up with someone else?’
‘I don’t know, I haven’t thought that far ahead.’ Keller shook his head. ‘I mean, I could tell her the truth?’
You tilted your head, as if to say you’d already had this conversation.
‘You’re right,’ Keller nodded. ‘It’s too dangerous.’
‘Speaking of dangerous, I still could’ve gotten a taxi home. You didn’t need to pick me up.’ You repeated the same thing from a previous argument you’d had.
‘I know.’ Keller bowed his head, still dragging his fingers over your knuckles. ‘I just…’
‘What is it?’ You frowned, getting your husband to look at you.
Keller sighed, wondering wether he should’ve said anything else. ‘I don’t feel like I get to do a lot of that stuff.’
     ‘What stuff?’
‘Just… small stuff, like… picking you up from airports, taking you for coffee or dinner, I don’t get to come home early and surprise you with a clean house.’ Keller inhaled deeply and let his head rest back on the sofa. ‘I’m sorry. I don’t mean to be ungrateful for what we have.’
‘No, you’re not.’ You assured him. ‘And none of that stuff is small, it’s all relevant and I’m sorry you can’t do any of it.’ You stroked through his hair, relaxing him. ‘Maybe when you retire?’
     ‘Can I retire tomorrow?’
You breathed a laugh. You knew he wouldn’t retire for a long time, you knew his job was too important to him, you knew life would always be a little different, you fell in love anyway.
Eventually you were both able to settle into work. You read your new books, Keller read his reports. Occasionally, your husband would ask you if you were okay, if you needed anything, sometimes he would apologise for all the work he had to do, you would laugh and shake your head and wait for him to finish.
It was well into the morning hours when a noise caught both of your attention.
     ‘The bins?’ You frowned.
‘Sounded like something falling.’ Keller was on his feet immediately to check it out, you following close behind.
Keller went out to the front of the house and saw a bin had fallen over. He looked at it suspiciously before lifting it back into position.
     ‘Something wrong?’ You asked.
‘I don’t think so.’ Keller shook his head, more reassuring himself. ‘Must’ve been a cat or something.’
You breathed a sigh of relief. ‘Probably Mrs Denton’s from down the road, it gets everywhere it shouldn’t. Maybe we should get a dog.’
You made Keller laugh as he locked up once again. At least you were able to help him relax a little.
‘You wanna go to bed?’ He asked just as you picked up your book, ready to settle down again.
‘You’re finished working?’ You frowned, looking down at the files that you were certain he should not have left lying around for you to read.
‘Basically.’ He shrugged. ‘I only have one more report to sign off on. I can do it in the morning.’
     You smiled warmly. ‘Okay.’
Truthfully, you had lied about sleeping on the plane, you maybe got a couple of hours, but you found it difficult to get anymore. Keller knew that, he always knew that, but he never said anything.
You went upstairs first while your husband went around the house, turning off lights, checking locks and making sure your home was secure. It was one of his ticks, a compulsion he had to always keep you safe no matter what.
While you waited for him to finish, you went through your nightly routine, taking off any makeup you still had on, slipping into your soft pyjamas and thinking about the following day.
Soon, Keller came up the stairs to find you in the en-suite, cleaning your face, hair pulled up into a loose bun, out of the way.
‘I’ll have to do a couple of washes tomorrow,’ you said, thinking about the two cases you had to unpack. ‘Is there anything you need for the week?’
‘No.’ He said, his voice a little hoarse, when you properly looked at him through the mirror, you could see his expression had softened completely, his beautiful blue eyes grazing over your body.
‘Something I can help you with?’ You chuckled, knowing exactly what was going through his mind.
‘One or two things wouldn’t go amiss.’ He flirted, stepping towards you and gently sliding his hands around your waist. ‘I’ve missed you.’ He whispered below your ear, making a small chill run down your side.
‘I can tell.’ You closed your eyes, leaning back into his warm body.
‘You tired?’ He asked, more unsure of how far he could go than anything.
You just laughed, turning around to face him, sliding your arms around his shoulders. ‘I confess I’m a little worn out from all the Italian boys that kept me company for the last couple months.’
Keller laughed, kissing you. ‘I forgot, you were left unsupervised,’ he kissed you again. ‘I may have to remind you who the boss is.’
You sucked in a harsh breath, this was your favourite game, the one where your husband would pretend to get jealous of something that never happened and show you his feral side.
‘Yes please.’ You breathed against his mouth.
Keller sank into a passionate kiss against the bathroom counter, his hands running over your body, reminding his body of how much he loved you.
He lifted you around his waist, wrapping your legs around him. Keller carried you back into the bedroom and lay you down on the soft, freshly made bed.
‘You made the bed?’ You frowned, noticing the smell of the white sheets.
‘I did.’ Keller nodded, taking his glasses off and throwing them on the side table. ‘I even mowed the lawn,’ he kissed your jaw. ‘I tidied the shed,’ he kissed your neck. ‘And I made sure your art supplies are well stocked.’ Keller lifted his head after making you dizzy, his darkened eyes scanning your features. ‘I love you.’
You smiled up at your husband. He really had been out of sorts while you were away, restless and unsure of what he should have been doing.
‘I love you, Richard.’ You whispered back.
Keller smiled, running the back of his fingers over your cheek, moving stray hair out of your face.
He kissed you softly, but soon that softness turned into passion and desperation. He needed you naked, open to him, displayed against the white sheets for him. You needed to feel his hot skin against yours, you missed his body, you missed the way he held you and made love to you.
Keller looked down at you, slowly sliding himself inside you, and it was a moment of pure bliss for both of you. He held himself there for a moment, just allowing his body to remember yours for a moment.
‘Don’t go away again.’ He whispered against your lips. You smiled, almost laughing. ‘I don’t think I can handle you leaving again.’
‘I won’t go.’ You promised. ‘I’ll stay here with you for as long as you need me.’
Keller kissed you passionately. ‘I always need you.’
You loved him. Everything about him, his passion, his attention to detail, everything about him, you loved. He calmed you when your mind was a mess, he cared for your needs like it was the only thing that made him happy, he received your love with gratitude like no other man ever had. You had no idea what you had done to deserve him.
He made you come, crying out his name, he allowed himself to be lost in you for a moment or two, and it was always beautiful to watch him lose control.
When you first met Keller you were unsure he was the one for you, he was always so calm and in control, never allowing his emotions to fluctuate too much. You wondered if there was anything more to him than that. Eventually, he asked you for a chance to get to know the real him, it intrigued you enough to give him that chance and you never looked back.
Your husband gently pulled the sheets up and encircled you in his embrace.
‘Goodnight, darling.’ He whispered, kissing your neck one last time as you fell asleep.
When the morning came, you were surprised to find Keller was already up and getting dressed. You gently whined seeing him do his tie.
‘What is it?’ He smiled, knowing exactly why you were upset.
     ‘You’re dressed.’ You mumbled.
‘Generally, my office appreciates its employees to be clothed.’ He chuckled, coming over to sit on the edge of the bed, stroking through your hair. ‘You hungry?’
‘Always.’ You inhaled deeply, just trying to wake up.
‘Well, if you’re downstairs in the next five minutes, you’ll get some pancakes.’ He kissed your temple and stood up to finish getting ready for work.
Your husband left you alone to get yourself up, and eventually you were able to drag your sore body into your black silk dressing gown and down to your kitchen where Keller was reading through a report on the counter.
A plate was already sitting for you on the island and you could only smile, settling into one of the stools. Keller poured some coffee, bringing it around to place next to your plate.
‘Thank you, Richard.’ You smiled, moving your legs to face him. ‘You know you didn’t have to go to all this trouble.’
‘It was no trouble, at all.’ He shook his head, leaning in to give you a soft kiss. He gently put the pot of coffee down, sliding his hand into your hair. His lips were so soft and inviting. ‘I love you.’
You chuckled. ‘You’ve already said that.’
‘And I’ll say it every second you need to hear it.’ He countered, kissing you again.
You felt one hand drift to your calf, pulling it around his waist once again. It, again, made you chuckle into him.
‘You know I love the way you look first thing in the morning?’ He said, moving down your neck once again.
‘You mean a mess?’ You let your hands slide into his hair, gently grasping it as he continued his sensual attack on your neck.
‘A hot mess of my doing.’ He growled, dragging his teeth over your earlobe. This man just had a way of igniting you. You laughed while he continued to pepper kisses down your throat, before finally needing him to stop. ‘Okay, I’ll let you go.’ He said smiling into another kiss. ‘But just this once.’
You giggled watching him go about finishing his coffee and reading his report.
‘I gotta go.’ Keller came up behind you, once again kissing your neck and breathing you in. ‘What if I call in sick?’ He inhaled.
‘Then you’ll be fielding calls all day instead of indulging in what you really want.’ You shot back, sliding your hands over his arms around your waist.
     ‘Wanna bet?’
‘Go to work, darling.’ You twisted your head to kiss his temple, knowing he wouldn’t call in sick or be late. ‘Call me if you get lonely.’
‘Hmm.’ He hummed into one last kiss. ‘I love you.’
‘I love you too.’ You chuckled. ‘Now go, or you’ll be late.’
Keller reluctantly pulled away, grabbing the report and leaving you alone to get on with your day.
Keller arrived at work, handing the briefcase to Gemma who just sighed, shaking her head.
‘You work too hard, sir.’ She called as he entered his office to begin his day.
Gemma got him to a couple of meetings in good time, and finished the morning with an operational briefing.
‘Sir?’ A lower level agent entered the room, unsure of himself. ‘Sorry to interrupt.’
‘We’re in the middle of a briefing,’ Keller sighed, annoyed. ‘What is it?’
‘Sorry, it’s just that there’s someone here to see you.’
‘Tell them to make an appointment with Gemma, I don’t have time right now.’ Keller dismissed him, indicating for Fury to continue, but he didn’t, instead, Fury just watched the agent behind Keller. ‘What now?’
Keller only noticed then that the agent was almost shaking. ‘I’m sorry sir, but she said you’d say that and if you did, I was to say…’
     ‘What?’ Keller frowned.
‘I was to say that she wouldn’t expect your wife to need an appointment.’
Keller’s heart dropped, he caught a brief exchange of looks between Gemma and Fury, but ignored it as he flew out of the briefing room.
You stood in the corridor, arms folded over your leather jacket and not in the least bit pleased.
‘Richard.’ You frowned, clearly riled up by something.
‘Are you okay? What are you doing here?’ Keller asked, he suddenly saw blood on your arms and a little on your neck and face. ‘Are you bleeding?’
‘It’s not my blood.’ You stated plainly, you moved your jacket to reveal more bloodstains on your grey vest and Keller’s head was filling with rage. ‘Three men broke in and tried to kill me, I’ve dealt with it, but I wasn’t sure where else to go, so I came here.’
Keller observed your face and body, you had clearly put up a decent fight, your knuckles and arms looked cut up like you’d been using them to defend yourself and quite suddenly, Keller felt a rage beginning to boil beneath the skin.
‘You need to keep your head, Richard.’ You almost commanded him, knowing how he could be. ‘I’ve got the security footage, I expected you’d like to go through it as soon as possible.’
Keller couldn’t focus. Gemma had manoeuvred herself into view, probably curious about what she’d heard.
‘You must be Gemma.’ You said, still slightly riled up, but more capable than your husband to focus. ‘Would you mind going over the footage? I think Richard and I might need a moment.’
‘Yes, of course.’ Gemma’s tone was what brought Keller back to the present.
‘I don’t need a moment.’ He said, strangely calmly, taking the tape from you. ‘Are you injured at all?’
There was almost a look of disappointment in your eye. You knew that despite his outer shell, your husband was on the brink of losing control.
‘Richard, I’m fine.’ You said, steadily. ‘I’m a little sore, but I just want you to deal with this as quickly as possible.’
‘Okay.’ He whispered. He hadn’t stopped looking at you since stepping outside the briefing, you were his primary focus now, the rest of the world could burn for all he cared, as long as you were safe.
Keller opened the door to the briefing room, indicating for you and Gemma to step inside.
‘Okay, new target.’ Keller announced as he entered the room, he put the tape into the player and began working. ‘Someone has broken into my home and attempted to harm my wife-‘
‘Attempted being the operative word.’ You said, catching his attention.
Keller turned to look at you. His gaze piercing yours.
‘Richard, the bodies are still there tied up in the kitchen. Perhaps a team could pick them up?’ You suggested.
     He nodded. ‘Fury.’
Fury immediately organised a team to do as they were ordered. Keller still watched you, still concerned that you were hurt, but unsure of how to handle both your well-being and the safety of his home.
The security footage took his attention away, and Keller found it much easier to focus.
He watched you cleaning up after breakfast, smiling, going about your day as you should have done. Three bulky men entered the house and Keller almost smiled at how little back up they had, it was no wonder you weren’t hurt, three was hardly a challenge for you.
The three men creeped around the house, you had already moved into your art studio, smiling at the restocked supplies that Keller had sourced for you. It swelled his heart.
Eventually the footage showed you having dressed and made your way back downstairs. You paused for a moment, wrapping your fingers around a nearby mug that you’d forgotten from breakfast.
‘Woah.’ Gemma breathed behind him as the footage showed you easily dispensing with the three men, kicking the last in the face to knock him out. ‘So, you’re a badass then?’
Keller listened to you breathing a laugh. ‘No, not really. I just know basic self-defence that Richard taught me a while back. Nothing more.’
Keller stopped the video and ordered a nearby agent to run facial recognition to find out who they were, before turning to you and sighing.
‘Are you okay?’ He asked, quietly stepping towards you.
‘I’m fine.’ You tried to assure him.
Keller nodded, he felt restrained in a way, he wanted to be himself for your sake, but he was surrounded by the people he worked with and didn’t know where to draw the line.
‘Sir, I can take her to get cleaned up? Maybe see a doctor?’ Gemma said, tentatively.
Keller just watched you, trying to make a decision.
‘You know,’ you decided to help him out. ‘It really is good that you’ve surrounded yourself with friends, Richard. I feel I’m in very safe hands here.’
‘You are.’ Keller nodded, gently taking your hand, looking down at the scrapes made from defending yourself.
‘Richard.’ You whispered, taking his attention back to your face.
Keller sighed and gently pulled you in close to his body, stroking his hand through your hair and making sure he could feel you in tact. Somehow it helped his focus. He placed a soft kiss to the side of your head and pulled back.
‘Go with Gemma.’ He told you, despite knowing you’d already made your mind up over what you were going to do next. ‘I’ll be along soon.’
‘I know.’ You nodded and eventually followed Gemma out of the briefing room.
You knew Gemma would have a lot of questions, but she was doing well to keep them to herself.
She took you to the infirmary to get checked, finding that most of the blood really was from someone else. Apart from a few scrapes you were fine, you knew you were, but it made your husband happy to make sure you were taken care of, so you were happy to comply.
You smiled a little at Gemma who would occasionally stare at you like some exotic creature. You knew perfectly well why.
‘We met at an art gallery.’ You said, once the doctor left the private room you were being seen in. Gemma sat forward listening. ‘He was quiet, shy, never really one for being the centre of attention. Truthfully, I thought he was a bit of a bore. But, eventually, I got to know him, we went on a few dates, he told me he was some secret agent and I didn’t believe it at the time, but then some idiot tried to steal a painting and… Richard barely did anything, he was so calm and collected, he stopped the thief and helped keep everyone calm.’ You remembered the night well. ‘Suffice to say, I was intrigued after that.’
‘And then you married him?’ Gemma asked, listening to every word of the story.
‘Well, not without reluctance,’ you confessed. ‘The wife of the Director of SHIELD. Some title. It gave me pause for thought, Richard made clear it wouldn’t be the safest choice I’d ever make, but he promised he’d make it work no matter what I chose. We both had to make sacrifices for our marriage. He gave a lot more than I did, but still…’ you trailed off thinking on all the things you could never do because of the man you loved. Every day you believed it was worth it though.
‘All this time, we just thought he was lonely.’ Gemma shook her head. ‘Sorry, it’s just so weird to find out Director Keller has a wife.’
‘That’s okay.’ You chuckled. ‘The loneliness is my fault unfortunately. I travel a lot and Richard does get a little out of sorts. He does okay for the first week or two, but gets increasingly restless the longer I’m away.’
     ‘You travel for work?’
‘Kind of.’ You bobbed your head from side to side. ‘I’m a painter so the travelling is voluntary really, but I always wanted to see the world.’
Suddenly the door burst open and Keller, looking slightly more panicked than he had done, came rushing in.
     ‘Are you okay?’ He demanded.
‘Darling, I’m fine.’ You sighed once again. ‘Clean bill of health, just some scrapes. Nothing to worry about.’
‘You promise?’ Keller needed to be sure.
‘I promise.’ You nodded, assuring him. ‘Are you okay?’
‘No.’ He let a steady breath go through his nose. ‘My wife was attacked and all I can think about is how I should’ve have gotten her the dog she wanted.’
‘If I’d known all I needed to do was get myself into a life threatening situation-‘
‘Don’t.’ He suddenly begged, stepping towards you, entering your personal space. ‘Please don’t say that.’
‘Okay.’ You breathed, realising he wasn’t ready to joke around just yet. ‘You need me?’
‘Darling, I always need you.’ Keller breathed, once again sliding his arms around you and holding you close.
Gemma indicated that she would leave quietly, allowing you both to have a moment alone and you smiled appreciatively.
‘If you can wait a little longer,’ Keller spoke into your hair. ‘Fury is still picking the culprits up, you can stay in my office until I can take you home.’
‘Oh don’t worry about me, I can get back okay.’
‘It’s not really a question.’ He said, catching your attention. ‘The noise we heard last night, when you thought it was Mrs Denton’s cat? It was one of the suspects disabling a camera, clearly they didn’t know about the others.’ Keller pulled back, his eyes filling with water. ‘I’m sorry this is all my fault, they followed me to the airport when I picked you up yesterday. I’m so sorry my darling.’
‘Richard.’ You half laughed. ‘Never apologise for caring for me. Never apologise for that. I knew the life I was signing up for when I married you and I wouldn’t trade it for anything else.’
Keller just watched you for a moment, trying to decide something behind his eyes, it made you smile. Keller gently stroked your cheek before pressing his warm lips to yours. He was finally relaxing.
You spent the rest of the day in his office, feeling mostly bored and unsure of what to do, but Keller took care of you. He took all his meetings in his office while you sketched at his desk, keeping yourself occupied. People would come in and sort of glance at you as if to ask ‘who the hell is she?’
‘This is my wife, she has security clearance.’ He would say in a commanding voice that you’d never heard before, and get whoever it was to get to the point quicker.
Occasionally Gemma would pop to ask if there was anything you needed and your husband took pride in asking for the coffee you like the most. You would just smile at nod to Gemma, knowing Keller needed to feel he had control over every situation.
‘You need to relax, Richard.’ You said quietly once you were left alone. ‘You’re getting far too tightly wound and you’re snapping a lot. From the look on Gemma’s face, it seems to be out of the ordinary behaviour.’
‘Well, what do you expect after hearing my wife was nearly killed this morning?’ He snapped, making you raise your eyebrow.
Keller could get away with snapping at junior colleagues, he could pass it off as being too busy or working to hard to engage, he could even get away with ignoring things completely if he so chose. But not with you.
‘I’m sorry.’ He sighed, taking his glasses off and closing his eyes for a moment. ‘I’m just angry.’
‘I can tell.’ You agreed, standing up to wander over to him. You gave him a moment, before gently moving his arm away so you could slide onto his lap. You wrapped your arms around his neck and kissed his temple, running your fingers through his hair. ‘How’s that?’
Keller wrapped his arms around you, inhaling deeply. ‘Much better.’
You stayed like that for another moment or two, until you felt him freeze beneath you.
‘What is it?’ You immediately asked in a sleepy voice. You were far too relaxed as well.
‘You’re shaking.’ He noticed, taking your hand to find you were in fact shaking.
You almost laughed. ‘Well, the shock had to wear off some time, didn’t it?’
Without warning, whatever delayed reaction you’d had to everything suddenly stopped and all emotion began flooding your system. Keller just held you, whispering how it would be okay, you would be okay.
You believed him, but it was difficult nonetheless. You couldn’t hold back the tears forever, but it seemed you would get so little time to feel it. Another knock came to Keller’s door, you felt him sighing beneath you.
     ‘It’s okay-‘ you whispered.
‘It’s not.’ He countered, leaning up to kiss you. ‘But I appreciate you saying it is.’
You smiled at your husband, slowly untangling yourself from his embrace and moving to look out of the large window in his office.
You heard him going to the door and talk quietly to someone you vaguely recognised. The door closed behind you and you let a deep soothing breath go. You knew the emotions would catch up to you, you’d spent all afternoon trying to stop them, hoping you could hold on until you were back home for your husband's sake. But sometimes there was no holding back the tide.
‘Mrs Keller?’ Gemma called from the door, you sucked in a deep breath and turned to see the interesting young woman. ‘Do you need anything?’
‘I’m fine, Gemma.’ You smiled as best you could, moving to sit on top of Keller’s desk the way you always did when you were at home. It almost startled Gemma, no one sat on the Director’s desk. ‘I hope he hasn’t been too hard on you.’
‘Oh no, don’t worry about us,’ she said, tidying away a few files Keller had left on his coffee table. ‘The Director is usually a little snappy when he’s stressed.’
‘Well, I confess it’s not a side of him I’ve really seen.’ You frowned.
‘Really?’ She seemed shocked, making you chuckle. ‘I didn’t mean it like that, I just meant we all get stressed.’
‘True, but Richard doesn’t really bring the stress home.’ You shook your head, thinking about your husband. ‘It’s quite unusual seeing him in this light.’
‘I know what you mean.’ Gemma chuckled. ‘Honestly, the Director is great, we get along very well and I always feel like I can tell him if somethings wrong, he’s usually quite kind about things, but I’ve never seen him like this before.’
‘Like what?’ You tilted your head, intrigued.
Gemma took a moment to find the right word. ‘Warm?’ She scrunched her face like it wasn’t right. ‘I don’t know, just… he’s very professional I suppose, so seeing him with you and being so…’
     You frowned in questioning.
‘Oh, I don’t know, he’s just behaving the way someone would behave when they’re in love, but seeing him do it… it’s very weird.’ She chuckled, making you smile as well. ‘I hope that’s okay to say.’
‘Gemma, I’m not your boss,’ you laughed. ‘You can say anything you like.’
Gemma nodded, still collecting up files. ‘Well, in that case, I’m really happy he has you. I mean none of us thought in a million years that the Director would have a secret wife, especially not one so badass.’
That made you laugh a lot more, but it did highlight the sore parts of your body.
‘Trust me, I’m not as badass as you think.’ You calmed down. ‘And I’m afraid the secrecy is necessary, I’m sure you can understand.’
‘Of course.’ Gemma nodded. She was probably one of the only people who could understand the demands of Keller’s job.
After a moment, the man himself entered, carrying a file in his hand, he stopped when he saw you, observing you for a minute.
‘So, we know who it was,’ he started, slowly taking the last few steps towards you. ‘A team has been sent to neutralise the threat.’
‘Neutralise? That’s a very professional word.’ You smiled.
‘It is.’ Keller breathed a laugh. ‘But to put a dampener on things, I will be stationing a two man team outside the house every day for the next month. Just to make sure.’
You sighed, not happy, but knowing it was necessary.
Keller gently placed the file down and stroked your thighs, being careful with you.
‘I knew you’d hate that, so I am going to make up for it.’ He promised, you saw that glint in his eye that belonged only to your husband. ‘Tonight, I’m going to take you home, make you dinner, run a bath and I will not take a single piece of work home with me.’
‘Really?’ You frowned, suspiciously. ‘That does not sound like you at all.’
‘I promise, tonight I’m yours and that you are my only priority.’ Keller gently slid his hands up your jaw and placed a finely, soft kiss to your lips. ‘I’m so sorry this happened, darling. I’ll do everything I can to make sure it never happens again.’ He whispered against your mouth, placing another kiss.
You were enjoying the moment, but a noise from where Gemma was still tidying broke the quiet. Keller’s head whipped around, clearly having no idea she was still in the room.
‘Sorry, I’m so sorry!’ Gemma was trying not to smile, but also trying to gather up the files. ‘It’s just you came in, I didn’t know when to leave, I’m sorry.’
You placed your hand on your husband's chest, making sure he understood that none of it was a big deal and you felt him inhale calmly.
‘It’s okay.’ He sighed, you could tell he wasn’t angry, just a little embarrassed. ‘Don’t worry about it, just… could you make sure there’s a car outside for me? I think it’s time I took my wife home.’ Keller pierced your gaze with his. Those beautiful blue eyes that belonged to the man you loved.
‘Yes, sir.’ Gemma said, leaving immediately to call for a car.
‘She’s going to give me hell for that.’ Keller chuckled.
‘Good.’ You smiled. ‘Someone has to.’
Keller gently stroked your hands, being careful to avoid the scrapes, but it was now the skin around the injuries that was sore as well.
     ‘That hurt?’ Keller frowned.
‘A little.’ You shrugged. ‘It’s just sensitive.’
Your husband nodded and gently smiled. ‘Am I an awful person for being grateful for another opportunity to show you how much I love you?’
You just chuckled, shaking your head. ‘Of course not.’
He bowed his head slightly, before placing a kiss to your cheek, breathing you in. ‘You have a few decisions to make.’ His voice was low, the way it is when he knows you’ll love what he’s about to say.
You frowned, pulling back to see him.
‘Whatever you want for dinner,’ he smiled, again stroking through your hair. ‘And… what kind of dog do you want?’
You suddenly started laughing. ‘Richard, we can’t get a dog, what’s going to happen when I go away? Who’s going to look after it?’
‘In case this has passed you by, I am the Director of SHIELD, I can look after it here.’
‘Richard.’ You shook your head. ‘I am fine, we don’t need to get a dog.’
Keller let his breath go, still smiling. ‘Okay.’ He said. ‘Are you ready to go home?’
‘I am.’ You nodded. ‘But seriously, if you’ve got work, please don’t hesitate to bring it with you. I know I’ve kind of set you back for the day.’
‘Darling, I know this is the first time you’ve seen me at work, but trust me, there is nothing this place can throw at me that will take priority over you.’ Keller placed another soft kiss to your lips. Somehow it grounded you, you believed every word he said.
Your husband picked up his jacket, giving you his coat, despite knowing you didn’t need it, and you said good night to Gemma.
There was a whole team waiting outside and Keller began speaking to them in a very professional tone, you gave Gemma a look almost mocking his other personality, making her stifle a laugh. Much to everyone’s surprise, including yours, Keller slid his hand down your arm, kissed your cheek and led you out of his office.
Gemma watched her boss leave, she had never seen him like that before. Usually a relatively cold and commanding man, it was a pleasant surprise to see his softer and gentler side.
Fury creeped out from a corridor just after Keller left, eager to talk about what had happened.
‘Oh my god.’ Gemma mouthed, while Fury whistled.
‘Who saw that coming?’ Fury chuckled.
‘How the hell did he manage to keep her a secret all this time?’ Gemma just laughed, baffled by her boss.
‘No idea, but kudus to him.’
     ‘And she’s lovely. She’s a painter.’
‘A hell of a fighter. Keller must’ve taught her a thing or two.’
‘And they’re so sweet together.’ Gemma continued gushing. ‘Did you see the way he was around her? God, I could never have imagined him like that.’
‘What did you imagine him like?’ Fury frowned, making Gemma scowl at him.
‘Did you manage to track the guys who did this?’ Gemma sat up, moving a few things around in her desk.
‘Yeah, some gang that’s been watching Keller for a while now, we’ve been tracking them for a few months.’ Fury nodded, shoving his hands in his pockets. ‘I’m kinda surprised Keller went to the airport himself to pick her up. It’s a huge risk just being seen with her.’
‘He promised her this time he would.’ Gemma told him. ‘It’s funny, the way she was talking about him, feels like there’s a lot of promises he wasn’t able to keep.’
‘The price of the job.’ Fury nodded.
It dawned on the both of them just how difficult the marriage must have been, how in love you and Keller must be to continue down this path together, regardless of consequence.
A couple of months later, Keller had come into the office with a white German Shepherd barely six months old on a lead. He went about his day as usual and when Gemma entered his office to help him with a few meetings, she greeted the dog and asked how long you were going to be away for.
Keller just smiled and scratched the dog’s head affectionately.

You want an ask, well here is one. Can we get another The Climb update? Also do you take requeats?
I will update as soon as I can. I do take requests, but I will be closing my request box soon as I’ve got quite a lot to get through and they’re piling up a bit. Feel free to request something before the end of the week though and I’ll add it to the list.

Normalize going into people’s ask boxes and ask them random ass questions.
Tumblr used to be so much fun with all the asks (anonymous or otherwise), and we need to bring those back, especially now that we finally have a half-decent blocking feature in place.
Ask people things! Message them! Don’t let tumblr inbox die! It’s one of the features that made tumblr tumblr.

I Could Never Get Bored Of You
Talos x Reader
Word Count: 2225
You hadn’t really seen Talos act like this before, usually he was fun and playful and always had the best intentions for you. But now, in recent weeks, he was distant.
You knew he and Fury would occasionally have to work on one secret mission or another, but this was different, he wasn’t away from your home long enough for it to be a secret mission.
Patience wasn’t always your thing, but you had it where Talos was concerned. You owed him that much for saving your life three years ago.
Walking the short distance home at night was never something that usually bothered you, your work was right around the corner, but the journey was full of alleyways. It just so happened that a group of men tried to mug you down one of them on a random Tuesday night.
Talos was there, the second a knife was pulled, you were convinced you were going to die, you couldn’t remember enough of the self defence training you’d had in school to defend yourself properly. That, and you were taken by such surprise that all memory of anything left you immediately.
It was a blurred memory now, but you do remember watching Talos move like the group of men were rag dolls. He was so strong and quick, you were sure it was your imagination at first.
‘Are you okay?’ He said gently kneeling down a short distance from you, trying not to get too close, but enough to actually see if you were okay.
It took you a moment, but when you started to move, you realised that your back was at least bruised, you had scrapes and cuts over your knees and hands and you really weren’t okay.
‘Can I call anyone for you?’ He asked, moving to pick up your bag and tentatively hand it to you. ‘Maybe a taxi or a friend to pick you up?’
His crystal blue eyes looked somehow off and it was then you sore his knuckles were purple. It confused you for a moment, but you thought maybe it was the light making the colour look strange. Talos had caught you looking and subtly moved his hand out of sight.
‘I’m okay.’ You breathed, clearly lying. ‘I don’t live that far anyway.’
He nodded, again not convinced. ‘Would you be comfortable if I offered to walk you the rest of the way? I’ll understand if you say no, I won’t force you.’
There was something so incredibly sweet about the way he asked, still not daring encroach into your space, making sure you really were okay.
‘Thank you.’ You breathed, taking your bag with a shaking hand.
Talos gave you a brief smile, hoping to settle you somewhat. ‘I’m Talos by the way.’
‘Y/N.’
He nodded again, gently. ‘You got everything? They didn’t manage to get away with anything, did they?’
Talos took a step back, giving you more room to check your bag. Everything was in there, including your keys which you took out, sliding one key between your middle and ring finger, just in case.
You were sure he saw it, but he said nothing. Instead, Talos walked you home, always walking the other side of the parked cars, making sure you knew he wasn’t going to attack you or even threaten you.
Talos didn’t even walk into the car park with you, the entrance to your block being around the back, he wanted you to know that he only wanted to help.
After that, you saw him a couple of times wandering around the same area, assuming he lived close by, you introduced yourself properly and thanked him for helping you. He was sweet and kind and always a gentleman, keeping his distance, knowing that you would feel more comfortable that way.
It took a few weeks, but eventually you were scheduling in coffee dates and the occasional dinner. He didn’t seem to want anything from you, he assumed you didn’t want anything from him, but you very quickly realised how attracted you were to him.
Talos had been a little shy around the subject, but always assured you it wasn’t a rejection, he just had a job which didn’t allow for him to get too close to people. He had a natural mistrust of everyone and you understood that.
It was almost six months in before he revealed his true nature, scared you would run away or call the police, he believed you deserved a choice in all things and deserved the truth regardless of the personal cost to himself.
Strangely, nothing about his natural form made you feel any different, in fact, you loved him the more for it. To be brave enough and love you enough to risk everything, you couldn’t imagine how difficult it must have been.
Ever since that day, you made it clear that he never had to take Keller’s form when in your home, of course, he made sure the curtains were closed just in case he was being watched, but you didn’t mind, as long as he was comfortable.
‘Talos?’ You called, hearing the door to your flat close.
‘Just me.’ He yelled back, but his tone was quiet and tired. It must have been a hard day.
You grabbed a towel to dry your hands from doing the dishes and wandered into your living room where he still had Keller’s likeness.
‘Are you okay?’ You asked, closing the curtains so he could change back. ‘You sound a bit tired.’
‘I’m fine.’ Talos nodded, but didn’t change his form. He took his jacket off and hung it up carefully next to your door.
‘Are you sure?’ You half laughed. ‘You seem a bit…’
‘What?’ Talos was keeping a strange distance between you. The length of your three seater sofa, in fact.
‘What’s going on?’ You felt your heart sinking slightly, red flags began popping up in your mind.
‘I told you, nothing.’ Talos shook his head.
You moved back towards the table that sat beneath your window, knowing there was a knife in the drawer.
‘What was the first thing you said to me after you showed me your real face?’ You asked.
Talos frowned, tilting his head. ‘Y/N, it is me. I’m not someone else.’
‘If you’re really Talos, you’ll know the answer.’ You countered, moving to reach into the drawer as subtly as you could.
Talos sighed, clearly irritated by the question. ‘I told you I had no intentions of falling in love in you, but you deserve to be loved by someone who doesn’t have to hide who they are from the world.’
You let out a breath of relief.
‘You need to get better at hiding your movements though,’ Talos added. ‘I knew you were going for the drawer the second you decided to.’
‘Well, I panicked.’ You shot back. ‘I did my best.’
‘I know.’ Talos nodded, but his gaze dropped away. It was quiet for a moment. ‘Have you had a good day?’
It was your turn to tilt your head. ‘Talos, something’s going on here. What is it? Are you in trouble? Am I in trouble? Do we need to go?’
A thousand possibilities ran through your mind, including a scenario Talos had warned you could happen, someone could have found out about his relationship with you and threatened to use you against him.
Talos stepped forward to calm you down. ‘No, no, no one’s in trouble.’ He said, calmly and quietly. It always calmed you down when he spoke like that. ‘I just…’ You recognised his thought pattern, it was one that wasn’t taking him anywhere good. ‘I think we need to reconsider… our relationship.’
It was as if a lead ball had dropped into the pit of your stomach. ‘What do you mean?’ You said, shakily.
‘I mean…’ Talos started, but never finished the sentence.
‘You don’t love me anymore.’ You closed your eyes, feeling the tears fill them.
‘Of course, I love you.’ Talos took another step towards you, within touching distance. ‘Y/N, I love you more than anything in the world.’
‘Then why are you breaking up with me?’ You suddenly demanded.
‘Because you don’t love me anymore!’ Talos suddenly snapped. Clearly something had been building for a while.
‘What are you talking about?’ Your breathing stuttered.
Talos sighed and leaned over the back of your sofa, the one you were supposed to be sitting on, watching some movie to pass the time that evening.
‘Talos-‘
‘A couple weeks ago,’ he started, quietly. ‘We… that night…’ You really needed him to get to the point, what night was he talking about?
‘Talos, you’re scaring me now.’ You felt the tears falling hot on your cheeks.
Talos’ head snapped up. Scaring you was the one thing he could never forgive himself for.
‘Just tell me.’ You quietly begged.
Talos swallowed back the emotion, letting his head drop back down and closing his eyes tight. ‘When we had sex, you were really… you liked it a lot… more than usual.’ Talos sighed and you still couldn’t see the problem. ‘I had this face, his face.’
Talos stood up, taking in a deep breath, but you still weren’t seeing the connection, in fact, you were still trying to remember the night in question.
‘Look, I know that this has never been ideal for you.’ Talos didn’t even look at you for a moment. ‘I know that you’d love to introduce me to your friends, you’d love to do normal things and you can’t because of what I am. And I understand, I get it. I thought I could forget about it, because you never complained… but that night, I realised that you and Keller would actually make a really good fit. He’s a nice guy, a bit repressed, but once you crack him open, he’s a pussycat.’ Talos almost laughed. ‘He could be a better choice for you, I know he could make you happy… give you the kids you want-‘
‘Talos, stop.’ You breathed, still stuttering over every breath. ‘I don’t understand what it going on here. Are you breaking up with me?’
Talos seemed to trip over his thoughts for a moment.
‘You seem to be under the impression that I would prefer another man to the one I’ve chosen.’
‘That’s the problem, I’m not a man,’ Talos countered. ‘I’m not human, I’m a Skrull and you should be with someone who can give you human things, not someone you could get bored with.’
‘Get bored?!’ You exclaimed, outraged. ‘What is God’s name makes you think I’m bored of you?’
‘Because I didn’t look like me when we-‘
‘Oh for God’s sake, Talos!’ You almost screamed. ‘I love you!’ You tried to say it clearly, so he understood. ‘I am in love with YOU! I fell in love with who you are not the face you wear. We had sex that night because I missed YOU.’ You felt like you were exerting more energy than you had, and Talos just stood and watched you. ‘Maybe this is my fault, I should never have told you Keller was attractive, I should have understood you might be insecure about some things-‘
‘Woah, woah, hold on, don’t say it like that.’ Talos put his hand up to stop you. ‘Don’t say it like…’
‘Go on.’ You dared him, but Talos remained silent. ‘Look, if you want to leave, you can leave, any time you want. If you’re bored of me, then fine, okay, I can learn to live with that, but don’t you dare question just how much I love you, the real you. I’m not in love with you because you look like someone you think I find more attractive… I’m in love with you because of everything that makes you who you are. Including… and most especially, what you really look like.’
You folded your arms, half expecting Talos to leave your flat and never come back. Maybe you could have learned to live with it, maybe you could have found a way to move forward and things would eventually be okay again, but it would take time.
Talos stepped towards you slowly, placing the tips of his fingers over your forearms, you opened your eyes to see he’d changed back to his true form.
‘I’m sorry.’ He whispered, softly against your temple. ‘I’m so sorry.’ He said, again. ‘I thought…’
‘You thought wrong.’ You whispered back, lifting your head to see him. You were always drawn to his eyes, deep and unending.
‘Forgive me?’ Talos tilted his head a little.
You smiled gently, still feeling the lead ball slowly lifting from your stomach. ‘Of course.’ You breathed. ‘Just don’t ever do that to me again. I will decide what’s best for me.’ Talos gently nodded. ‘I’ve chosen you, Talos. Everything about you, that is my choice.’ You sniffed, letting him run his hands over your arms and shoulders, hoping to somehow keep you close. ‘You’re so beautiful.’ You whispered. ‘I could never get bored of that.’
Talos’ deep purple eyes snapped to yours again, suddenly his lips pressed hard against you, your arms wrapped around his neck and you felt it, every part of him that loved you, you felt it. You just prayed you would never come so close to losing it ever again.

Just A Crush?
Director Keller x Reader
Chapter 4
Fury was by your side every day of recovery. You’d barely made it, dying for three minutes in the ambulance before being resuscitated. The bullet had gone straight through which was a good sign, at least there was no ricochet for the surgeons to deal with, but it was a long road to full health and one you would be taking alone.
You were in a wheelchair for the longest time, having to figure out how to move around your house with it, you ended up sleeping downstairs most of the time. Fury helped out here and there, making things easier for you to get to and giving you updates on work related things. You never dared ask how the Director was doing, but Fury gave you hints.
It seemed Director Keller felt nothing over you dying that night, he’d sent his regards with Fury, but that was it. Fury wasn’t stupid, he knew the both of you better than you thought and decided enough was enough.
‘Sir? Can I get a moment?’ Keller spun around in his office to see Fury half entering.
‘Of course.’ Keller said, putting the file he was reading down on the desk. ‘What can I do for you?’ It was amazing how commanding this man could be in a professional setting, Fury had always admired that in him.
‘I just thought you might like an update on L/N.’ Fury would have missed it every other day of the week, except he was almost looking for it, the sign that Keller cared more than he let on.
The Director shifted uncomfortably and cleared his throat, giving a half smile for Keller to continue speaking.
‘She’s out of the wheelchair now, moving a little more freely.’ Fury observed his boss with each word spoken. There was definitely something else there. ‘Still needs a little time at home, a little more physio, but she should be back to normal in a couple of months.’
‘Good to hear.’ Keller’s mouth tightened, he was usually a man in control, but this was more restraint that Fury was used to seeing. ‘Is there anything else?’
‘Yeah, just one thing.’ Fury nodded, half smiling. ‘I think she’s worried she disappointed you-‘
‘She didn’t disappoint anybody.’ Keller stopped him, frowning in confusion.
‘I know that, but you were the one there when she got shot,’ Fury reminded him. ‘She may need to hear it from you.’ Fury suddenly held his hands up. ‘It’s just an observation, sir.’
Fury watched as the wheels began to turn in Keller’s head and knew he’d done the right thing.
Keller watched Fury leave his office and thought on how you could have possibly thought you disappointed anyone. You got shot, you did your duty, if anything, he was the one who disappointed you. He made a promise that he would look after you and you still got hurt.
He made the decision in the months that you were recovering he wouldn’t disappoint you again, he would keep his distance if for nothing else to remove temptation from him and discomfort from you. He’d never felt his loneliness so heavily.
Enough was enough. Keller couldn’t let you think the worst of yourself, he also couldn’t let you come back to work in a lesser mindset. You worked best when you were confident and laughing with the other agents, he liked you best when you were happy, he couldn’t ruin that for you.
It was a few moments before you answered the door, Keller had patience, knowing your movement was hindered by your injury. You had a nice house, one he was sure you enjoyed to no end. It was spacious, well-protected with high end security systems and had the most stunning view of Los Angeles. He could imagine mornings spent with a coffee in hand watching the sun rise over that view.
‘Director Keller?’
Keller had been caught up in his thoughts that he didn’t even notice you opening the door.
‘What are you doing here?’ You asked.
Despite having been shot, despite probably not expecting visitors and despite you wearing a hoodie that covered your body in a sluggish fashion, you were still incredibly beautiful to him. As amazing as you had looked in your gown, your hair pinned up and your make up to highlight your stunning features, this version of you, the one who was cosy and comfortable, was just as gorgeous. You really were too good for him.
‘I, erm…’ It was a good start. Keller took a breath, pushing his glasses up his nose, starting again. ‘I should have come by sooner, I’m sorry that I didn’t.’
‘Don’t be silly.’ You shook your head, your hand briefly drifting over your stomach. He wanted nothing more than for you to be comfortable, he wanted to help you with your injury. ‘You have a whole agency to run, you can’t be worried about me.’
‘I know.’ He shrugged. ‘But…’ He could see how uncomfortable standing was making you. ‘Look, I wanted to have a conversation about that night, well, a little more than that night, but, that’s the focus, what’s brought me here now.’ Keller was messing it all up and you could tell, but there was no judgement. ‘I… can I come in for a while? Just talk?’
It was a while before you decided, but eventually you nodded and let him inside your home. It was just a spacious on the inside as it was on the outside. Clean, minimalist and Keller loved every inch of it, this was the kind of home he hoped you would have, one that screamed you.
Keller watched you sit down on your sofa, easing back gently, he went immediately to help.
‘It’s okay.’ You stopped him. ‘I have to get used to doing this on my own.’ You explained. Keller remained close just in case. ‘You can sit down as well.’ You half chuckled.
Keller chose to sit on the chair at the other end of the sofa, putting some distance between you both. It was quiet for a moment.
‘Fury came to me today.’ Keller began again. ‘Said you might have been feeling something of disappointment in yourself.’ You shifted uncomfortably. ‘I just want you to know that you haven’t disappointed anyone, if anything, I’m the one to blame for you getting hurt. I promised I would look after you and I couldn’t even do that.’ Keller let his gaze drop to the floor, feeling the shame start to overwhelm him again. ‘If we had left when Fury gave the word, if I hadn’t suggested we stay a little longer… indulge… you wouldn’t have gotten shot. I’m so sorry.’ Keller breathed steadily, noting that you hadn’t said anything yet. He looked up to see you frowning.
‘What do you mean “indulge”?’ You asked. ‘Indulge in what? Me?’
Keller swallowed thickly. ‘Yes.’ He breathed. ‘Y/N, I am so sorry that I made you feel so uncomfortable around me. I didn’t want my feelings to get in the way or make you think I was taking advantage of you. I kept giving you the option to back out, you had every chance to say you didn’t want to do it and you said yes, because you’re brave and you are an amazing agent, and I hated and loved that. I’m sorry that I put you in such a compromising position.’ Keller cleared his throat. ‘If you’d like to leave the agency, or transfer somewhere else, I will completely understand, I’ll even help you go anywhere you want to go. If that’s what you want. Again, I’m sorry my feelings clouded my judgement.’
You said nothing for far longer than Keller felt okay with. He couldn’t tell what you were thinking, but suddenly you sniffed like you were holding back the emotion. He knew this was a bad idea.
‘I’m confused.’ You whispered. Keller tried to think of how else he could explain himself. ‘I don’t understand. I thought you were married, that’s why you were uncomfortable around me, I thought you knew about… about my feelings.’
Keller’s heart inflated. The panic returned tenfold as he tried to dissect your sentence. You’d made a comment about a wife while at the event and Keller didn’t understand it at the time, but it was starting to make sense.
‘I don’t have a wife.’ He repeated, slowly. ‘Or a girlfriend, or… anything.’ He let a steady breath go. ‘You have feelings for me?’
Keller tried to be delicate but it was difficult, he needed to know. You sniffed again turning away a little.
‘Yeah, well, you had feelings for me first.’ You said, almost making him laugh.
‘Quite possibly.’ He nodded, observing you and everything he had thought about you in a new light, but still with no conclusion in sight.
‘Why didn’t you ever say anything?’ You asked, almost annoyed at him and he could understand that.
Keller swallowed and thought how best to say it. ‘It was a personal issue.’ He shook his head, knowing it wasn’t good enough.
‘You being in love with me kind of involves me, you know?’ Your eyebrow twitched upwards, making him smile.
‘Yes, it does.’ He agreed. ‘I guess I just… I didn’t want you to think I was that type of guy.’
‘What type of guy?’
‘The kind that sleeps around without… more.’
You cracked a bigger smile, but it fell almost immediately. ‘Well… I suppose if we’re being honest…’ you swallowed something hard. ‘I am that type of girl… all of my relationships have failed because they’ve moved too fast, and I never said anything because I didn’t want you to think the same thing.’
Keller leaned forward on his knees, smiling. ‘I don’t think that’s going to be a problem in your condition.’ At least he was able to make you laugh a little. ‘I want to ask for a little more clarity if that’s okay?’ You nodded. ‘If I were to ask you to dinner, on a date, would that… be okay?’
Keller half felt like an idiot, someone asking out his first crush, but also tentative like he didn’t want to break you in anyway.
You laughed, nodded. ‘Yeah, that’d be good.’
Keller suddenly smiled wider than he had done since that night. ‘Okay.’ He nodded, feeling giddy. ‘After your recovery then, we’ll go somewhere nice.’
‘After?’
‘You said you moved too fast in your previous relationships,’ he frowned, hoping he remembered correctly. ‘I moved too slow in most of mine, but dinner in two months doesn’t mean I can’t come round, right? I can swing by again? We could talk some more?’
Keller could tell that you were falling for this nervous side of him as well, just by the way your eyes focussed on him and your smile broadened.
‘I would love that.’
Keller loved every inch of you, now it was abundantly clear, you loved him back. Maybe he wasn’t such a fool and maybe the shame he felt about his feelings for you, we’re all for nought.

Just A Crush?
Director Keller x Reader
Chapter 3
It was a difficult day, you only had twelve hours to cram as much information about the Richmonds as possible. You spent the time going over footage of the two of them, studying their lives and trying to acknowledge anyone who may have been a friend just in case you ran into them.
Keller had been doing the same thing, you both worked in his office and a part of you felt uncomfortable, this wasn’t your space, you didn’t own it. Keller, however, did. He wandered around his space, knowing where everything was, never really having to look before picking something up, or watch where he was walking. This was his domain. You tried so hard not to dwell on that fact.
‘Are you okay?’ Keller asked. You looked up to see his tie slightly loose, his jacket gone as the day’s work began to take it’s toll. ‘It’s not too late to back out if you’re having second thoughts.’
‘I’m not.’ You shook your head, automatically looking back down at the file in front of you. You were sure Keller said something in acknowledgement, but all you could think on was how incredibly kind he was.
-
Keller hated this. He hated how much your duty called to you, you could have said no, he gave you every opportunity to tell him you were uncomfortable pretending to be his wife for an evening, but your need to be a protector, an agent of SHIELD still had a hold of you. The fact was, he would have loved nothing more than to share an evening with you on his arm, feeling carefree and confident, but not like this.
He promised he would look after you. He wouldn’t let you get hurt, not for any reason at all, you were far too important to him.
The day spent with you reciting facts about Sophie’s life, was actually one of the most peaceful ones he’d had. Somehow even through the discomfort you clearly felt about the whole thing, you were still able to focus and keep his mind clear as well. Just by being near him. You really were something else.
You had left to get dressed, the event was starting in an hour and you still needed to get your final briefing from Fury. Keller went over his own file a couple more times before getting changed himself. He breathed deeply and calmly, grabbing the pristine white shirt and hearing a knock at the door. It must have been Fury with the earpieces.
‘Yeah, come in.’ Keller called, sliding the shirt over his shoulders and turning to see you in the most beautiful light he’d ever seen.
You wore an emerald, floor length gown, your black pointed heels just visible at the bottom, the dress was tight at the top and hugged your body in the most mouth-watering way possible. Your hair pinned up into the tight bun your woman usually wore, exposing the skin on your neck, was a particularly inviting sight.
Keller was stunned, frozen to the spot for just a few seconds, enough that you surely noticed.
‘Sorry.’ You cleared your throat, suddenly turning away to pick up the short emerald jacket you’d left on his sofa, embarrassed. Keller quickly realised why and began frantically buttoning his shirt.
‘No, no, it’s fine.’ Keller quickly said, turning away to hide his own embarrassment at being seen so exposed. ‘You er…’ Keller stopped everything and took a deep breath. ‘You look… very beautiful.’ He nodded, almost mumbling by the end.
He didn’t dare look at you, instead, he grabbed his belt, tucked his white shirt in and finished getting dressed. He heard you leaving his office soon after he spoke, probably hating that he’d said it.
Keller slid his suit jacket on and leaned over his desk, holding his temples for a moment. The last thing he wanted was for you to think he was taking advantage of the situation, he didn’t want you to feel so embarrassed to be seen with him in real life, but it seemed that feeling may have been slipping into the persona you were supposed to be adopting.
Keller pushed his glasses up his nose and heard his door again. He hesitated for a moment, wondering if you’d come back, but he called for whoever it was to enter anyway.
‘Sir, we’re in the conference room down the hall.’ Fury’s voice echoed and Keller had never been so grateful to hear his friend.
Keller sucked in a deep breath. ‘On my way.’ He said, professionally.
The door closed behind him and Keller made himself one final promise. You were far too good for him, his childish crush, because that was how he was now treating it, was to be pushed down with every other feeling he may have had for you. Keller would protect you for the whole night, he would do right by you, he would not for a moment think of you in any other capacity other than professional and appropriate. You deserved, at the very least, his unyielding respect.
‘How are we doing?’ Keller asked as he entered the room. You had been speaking to Fury when the room noted his presence, it was a position of comfort to him to know he could still operate as the Director on sight alone.
‘We were just going over exit routes in case you ran into trouble, sir.’ Fury replied. Keller tried not to let himself get distracted by the sight of you, he’d already been disarmed by you once, he couldn’t allow it again.
‘Good.’ Keller nodded and took the glasses being handed to him by another agent.
‘Limo is waiting outside for you. Here.’ Fury handed you an earpiece and then Keller who was observing the room through the glasses worn by Dr Julian Richmond, thick-rimmed and a little heavier than his own.
There was nothing left to do but head out to the limo. You were both prepped and ready. You knew exactly what you were on the lookout for and you knew every person on that guest list. There were handlers who would be able to guide you through anything unforeseen if you needed it, but ultimately you would have to look after yourselves.
Keller took deep breaths every so often, noting that you did the same the closer you got to the hotel the event was being held in. You were nervous. So was he.
‘Everything will be fine.’ He said quietly as you pulled up to the hotel. ‘There’s no need to be nervous. I won’t let anything happen to you, I promise.’
You looked over at him with your sweet gaze and smiled, gently. ‘Thank you, sir.’
Keller gave a brief smile back and exited the limo, rounding the back to open the door for you to step out. You both did so with broad smiles, the same way the Richmonds always did.
‘Keep looking at me.’ You whispered, Keller was momentarily taken aback when he realised why. If you were supposed to be married and in love, there would be no need to look away.
Keller kept his gaze on you as you stepped out of the car and slipped your arm into his. Something about your body pressed into his side, settled Keller. He felt at ease and warm.
The night rolled on and Keller was surprised at how easy it became to convince people that not only you were the Richmonds, but that you were deeply in love. Keller bent his promise, using his feelings to amplify the accuracy of the pretend relationship.
It was especially noticeable when you stood to use the bathroom, kissing him on the cheek and gently squeezing his shoulder. The contact made heat pool in his stomach and he wished he could act on it further, in fact, his mind immediately filled with the image of following you to the bathroom and kissing you passionately against the wall of the dim hallway.
Keller took a deep breath, his eyes following you all the way out of the hall.
‘Some woman you got there, Jules.’ A man who was of little importance to Fury’s operation said to Keller. The table you were seated at were filled with people who were of little importance, the real work would come after dinner when the room would begin mingling.
‘Yes, she is something.’ Keller smiled, agreeing.
‘Beautiful, bet she’s a handful in the sack as well.’ The gruff man chuckled, but it filled Keller with a rage he rarely felt for no reason.
‘I would be very glad that she isn’t here to hear you say something so disrespectful.’ Keller warned, lowly. ‘My wife is not one for tolerating fools lightly, I would tread carefully when she returns.’
The gruff man seemed to get the picture and continued eating.
‘Thank you.’ You whispered when you returned, your low breath tickling his ear in the most delightful way. Keller knew you’d heard the whole thing, but prayed you were unaffected by it.
He smiled at you, watching your beautiful features for a moment, indulging enough that he could call it an act, but secretly loving the feeling of being yours for a while.
Once dinner was over, it was time for the real work to begin. You spoke with a few people of interest here and there, your focus was on intel gathering and his was on you.
Keller could tell you were becoming more and more at ease with him in every regard, because occasionally you would laugh and wrap your arm around his waist, kiss his cheek, allow his hand to rest gently on your lower back and maintain eye contact for longer than was appropriate.
You had ended up dancing in amongst a few important figures you were trying to eavesdrop on, something Keller was extremely nervous about. Not just because of the dancing or being closer to you, but because you were both exposed with no protection.
‘You okay?’ You mouthed as Keller slowly slid his hand around your waist, holding your other hand close to his chest, the same way the Richmonds did in all the footage you’d seen.
‘Fine.’ He whispered. ‘Just feeling a little exposed.’ He smiled as gently as he could.
It was the endearing look you gave that shook Keller’s heart, you really were incredibly sweet, gentle, beautiful in every light and he suddenly realised how much he needed to savour the moments he got to pretend to be yours.
‘Sir, we have the information we need.’ Fury’s voice echoed in his earpiece and Keller wouldn’t mistake the look of disappointment on your face.
‘Good.’ Keller said, but didn’t let you go just yet, it wasn’t like you were pulling away all that much. ‘We’ll make contact once it’s safe to leave.’
He took his earpiece out subtly, prompting you to do the same. Keller took it and placed it in his trouser pocket.
‘Sir?’ You frowned.
‘You looked like you were enjoying yourself.’ He admitted, suddenly regretting everything. ‘I didn’t want to push you to leave if you’d rather…’ Keller stopped himself, clearing his throat. ‘I mean, we can leave if you’d like.’
He watched you swallow thickly, thinking hard, before letting your gaze drop. ‘I don’t want to put you out, sir. We’ve got what we came for.’ You cleared your throat as well, clearly feeling some discomfort. ‘Besides, I wouldn’t want your wife to think the worst of me.’
Keller immediately frowned. He was sure he’d heard something like that before, someone else saying something similar to him, he knew what it could have meant, but he didn’t want to hold out too much hope. However, everything that had happened that night came flooding back to him, the gentle touches, the soft pecks to the cheeks, the genuine smiles and laughs and all of it inflated his heart to think it could have been just a little bit real.
‘Y/N, I don’t have a-‘
Gunfire stopped Keller’s words immediately. The whole hall was in a panic, Keller had automatically stepped in front of you, keeping you out of harm’s way. People had begun running around, he quickly put his earpiece back in and Fury was already dispensing a team out to the hotel.
It was just a simple robbery, nothing planned too well, but men with guns were still dangerous. It wasn’t high profile enough to even show up on anyone’s radar, but Keller still felt a wave of anger that the mission had gone downhill. If he’d left when Fury told him they had the information, you would be safe.
‘We just need to sit tight.’ He whispered to you as the gun fire quietened down. ‘Fury is sending a team.’
Keller got you to safety behind a large plant pot, but you were trailing behind a little. When he turned to see why, he felt something wet on his hands. You’d been shot.
‘Sir.’ You croaked, not being able to stand.
Keller’s heart dropped. You were losing a lot of blood from somewhere in your abdomen. It wasn’t clear where immediately, but Keller couldn’t breathe with how panicked he was.
‘Fury, L/N’s been shot, you need to get your men in here now.’ Keller commanded quietly as you began fading. ‘Stay with me, just stay with me okay.’ He told you, holding his hand over your wound, trying to stop the bleeding where he could.
‘Sir.’ You whispered, no longer panicking, as if accepting your fate. ‘I’m sorry.’
‘No, no, there’s no reason to be sorry, none at all.’ Keller shook his head, keeping an eye out for where the back up was while the shooter began yelling for people to get down. Keller couldn’t fathom what they would be after in a hotel. ‘I’m going to get you out of here, I made a promise.’
‘Sir.’ You breathed, your lips red from where the blood was trying to escape. ‘I’m sorry… I didn’t mean… make things… awkward… for you.’
Your eyes closed and Keller just frowned, what did you mean by that? What could you possibly have meant by that?
‘Y/N? You need to stay awake, you need to keep talking to me.’ Keller began to shake with panic. ‘You can’t leave me here on my own, you need to explain what you mean.’ He could feel the tears already starting to find their way out. ‘No, Y/N.’ He whispered as your eyes closed, your beautiful eyes. ‘Y/N, wake up.’ He said it gently at first, but soon it was a beg, he was begging you to stay with him. ‘Please, please, wake up.’ He whispered against your hair. ‘I… you looked so beautiful tonight, you really did…’ you were barely moving, the last energy you had was fading quickly. ‘Please. Don’t. Go.’ He said once more as the paramedics ran in to take over.
Fury wasn’t far behind, he was able to pull Keller up and allow the professionals to do their job.
His hands were covered in your blood, Fury was trying to talk to him, but Keller couldn’t focus. He wandered away to the bathroom and began washing his hands. What else was he supposed to do?

Just A Crush?
Director Keller x Reader
Chapter 2
You did your best to remain professional, but honestly it was difficult. Keller was in great shape and pushed himself to be better every day. He was elegant and classy, but you could tell he was also a fierce and protective man, his presence alone screamed a man in command. It was everything you liked in a man.
You weren’t exactly looking to develop feelings for anyone, especially not your boss and especially not the Director of SHIELD. You felt so much shame over the way you admired him, any small slip in normality, any crack in your polite and professional front and you were certain he would find out. At that point, you were sure things would only be harder, surely that meant a new career?
Fury had gotten you this job because of your outstanding record with the CIA, you needed a change, things had gone south a few many times and it had become exhausting. You just needed new people around you, new experiences and more importantly, something that gave you new purpose.
You were grateful to your friend for helping out, Fury told you he owed you one anyway, but you’d stopped keeping track a long time ago.
If you’d been any other person you would have probably slept with Keller the day you’d met him, but you were trying to change your ways. All your relationships had moved way too fast to ever be successful, if you were ever going to make it work with anyone, you needed to slow down.
In a way, you thought this a good test for your resolve. There was no way you could ever bed Keller, not in a million years for any reason, so keeping your distance and trying to halt even low level flirting was a good thing.
Of course, the one-on-one sessions you’d scheduled in were torture in themselves. The way his lean body moved, his strength to push for more and his stamina, were all mouth-watering.
He was funny as well, sweet in a way and kind, despite being a generally intimidating figure to most, you found a few moments you shared to be endearing and soft. You watched his eyes close while you worked on his knee, thinking it was probably an uncomfortable position for him to be in and you tried to work quickly. His skin was warm and his muscles tested your focus.
You’d decided to have your own session after you’d finished your work for the day, anything to try and quiet some of the energy you felt building. You put your earphones in and began running on the treadmill, letting the music do it’s job and trying hard not to think of Director Keller in anything other than a professional manner.
After almost half an hour, you thought it worked. Light pooled out of the corner of your eye and you wondered who would still be around at this time of night.
You felt whoever it was wander close to you, clearly trying to delicately get your attention.
‘Director?’ You said, surprised that he would have stayed so late and that he would have come to see you. You pulled your earphones out and slowed your pace to a brisk walk.
‘Sorry to disturb you.’ His voice was hoarse like he’d been shouting, or maybe he was just tired.
‘It’s okay.’ You smiled, really not minding his presence one bit. ‘Not all of us are fighting fit, like you, some of us have to work at it.’
You immediately hated the words that left your mouth. Why did you have to flirt? His torn away gaze told you everything you needed to know, he found it uncomfortable as well.
‘We need to talk.’ You suddenly noticed his serious tone and dread began to flood your limbs. He knew.
There was no other explanation. Why would the Director of SHIELD want to talk to you in the privacy of his office? More than likely to discuss a personal matter where you wouldn’t be interrupted or overheard. He was going to ask you to pack your things and leave the agency.
You took a quick shower, tied your hair back and shoved on a standard SHIELD hoodie, there was no point in even trying to impress Keller.
When you arrived at his office, you could hear voices inside, you wondered briefly if you should have waited, but honestly you just wanted to get the humiliation over and done with.
‘Come in.’ You heard Keller call after you knocked gently on the door.
You inhaled deep, composed yourself and entered. You were surprised to see Fury, you expected someone from HR.
‘Sir?’ You said, clearing your throat and trying not to look like you were expecting anything different.
‘Agent L/N.’ Keller stood up behind his desk while Fury remained seated on the grey fabric sofa to the side. Why did he still look so pristine in his suit? It was doing nothing to put you off. ‘We have a situation. We need your help to resolve it.’
You frowned. ‘What kind of situation?’
‘There is an event that is being hosted tomorrow evening and we have had difficulty in securing entrance.’ Keller explained, but he seemed hesitant to give all the information. He looked to Fury to help him out.
‘Look, we need eyes inside that hall,’ Fury sat forward leaning on his knees. ‘We’re going to have to send two people inside to pose as guests and relay the information back to my team.’
‘This is a field operation by nature.’ Keller used a much lower tone, making his voice almost a growl. ‘I know that it’s something you would have preferred not to get involved in considering your last employment, but we don’t have a lot of options left. You can say no.’
You felt a pang of anger that your previous employment would be brought up. You’d had it bad in the last mission you were on and nearly died. You didn’t want a repeat, but something in the way Keller was asking had you wanting to say yes.
‘Why me?’ You cleared your throat again.
‘Not just you.’ Keller interrupted before Fury could get there with one of his speeches. ‘I will also be going in.’
You frowned. Aside from the appealing notion of going on a mission with Keller, you didn’t quite understand why he wouldn’t send another agent.
Fury opened up the file at the edge of Keller’s desk and showed you a photograph. If you didn’t know any better, you would have said it was a photo of you and Keller dressed in black tie, holding hands and looking very in love. But that just wasn’t possible, except in your imagination.
‘Oh my God.’ You said, quietly looking over the image.
‘Spitting image.’ Fury half laughed. ‘That is Dr Julian Richmond and his wife Dr Sophie Richmond, both plastic surgeons and in attendance tomorrow night. Now we can remove them from the picture quietly and without fuss, but we need you and the Director to take their place. It’s the only way we’ll get the info we need.’
You were quiet for a moment. On the one hand, a night spent on the Director’s arm was an appealing thought, especially when trying to make the relationship look realistic. On the other, you really did not want to go back into the field again.
You heard Keller shift where he still stood. ‘Fury, give us a moment.’ He said, and Fury almost immediately did as he was asked. You didn’t dare look up just yet.
The air felt thick somehow, tense and… electric.
Keller stepped around his desk, shoving his hands in his pockets and cleared his throat.
‘Look, you don’t have to do this.’ He spoke low again, making you take a deep breath to cool yourself. ‘We can find another way to get what we need.’
‘How?’ You almost croaked, finally handing the photo back to Keller, who took it tentatively. ‘How else can you find out what’s going on in there if you don’t have people on the inside?’
‘We’ll figure it out.’ Keller frowned, his crystal blue gaze hovering on the photograph for a moment. He put it on his desk and took his own uncomfortable breath. ‘The point I’m making is you don’t need to put yourself in any danger if you don’t want to.’
You looked up the man you’d come to like a lot more than you should have, everything telling you not to go on another mission, but somehow your inner values telling you that you needed to do this. This seemed to be the easiest and most secure way to get what Fury needed, there was no reason to deny the request.
‘I think we both know that the other way would only get people hurt.’ You said, but your courage hadn’t quite caught up to you. ‘I understand that this may not be a comfortable situation for you, sir, but it seems like you wouldn’t have asked me if there was a more preferable choice.’
Keller held your gaze for a moment. He swallowed and you loved to see him so close to you, you just wished he wasn’t so uncomfortable around you.
‘I will look after you,’ he nodded, more to himself. ‘It’s a field operation, but that doesn’t mean it has to be dangerous. I need you to trust me as your partner.’
It was your turn to swallow. ‘I trust you.’ You almost whispered.
You could easily have gotten lost in his stare, he was incredibly handsome and it suddenly occurred to you that the reason for his discomfort may have been because he was already taken. Your heart shattered.

Just A crush?
Director Keller x Reader
Chapter 1
Keller was never one for interfering with his employees’ lives, he rarely disrupted their working lives unless it was absolutely necessary. So, when Fury had recommended you as a new combat instructor, he didn’t blink. If Fury thought you’d be a good fit, Keller trusted him. The only thing he hadn’t counted on, was his immediate and instant feelings of attraction towards you.
Keller wasn’t stupid, he’d had crushes before, mostly he pushed them to one side or did something about it if it was safe enough to do so. One night stands weren’t his thing anymore, he’d prefer a relationship if he was going to get involved. If he’d been younger and still a field agent, he may not have thought too much about trying his luck. But that wasn’t an option for so many reasons.
Over the years, Keller had found less satisfaction in sleeping around and more in deeper connections. The problem, of course, was his job didn’t allow for much connection to anyone. Keller had realised how lonely he’d become, but did everything to stay distracted from that fact.
You were nice to him, introducing yourself in a professional manner, even making him laugh with a witty one liner when you talked for the brief moments here and there. Keller liked you a lot.
Part of your duties was to make sure everyone passed their physical tests every six months, even the Director wasn’t exempt from them. He both dreaded and loved the one on one sessions you’d have together, you were funny and never judgemental of his slowing skillset, instead you helped him find new ways to focus and train his body.
Keller had been more and more self-conscious since you came around, his instinct was to try and impress you in some way so that you would notice him, but the reality was that during these sessions, your attention wasn’t anywhere else. In the moments he remembered that, he felt his loneliness far deeper than anything else.
‘Come on, Director.’ You encouraged as he ran on the treadmill. ‘Keep pushing, you’ve only got another two minutes.’
Keller breathed deep, the burn in his legs was already agony, but he didn’t want you to think he couldn’t complete a simple cardio session. He couldn’t help but want you to think he was in the best shape of his life, seeing you in your tight leggings and vest ignited something inside him that pushed him on.
‘That’s it, nearly there.’ You had your eyes on the stopwatch and Keller couldn’t take his away from your expression. ‘One more minute, just keep going.’
Keller prayed for the end to come, he wasn’t sure if he could get his body to keep going like this.
‘Thirty seconds, we’re in the final lap now, just a little further.’ Somehow if you had asked him to go another five minutes, he didn’t think his ego would give him a choice, he just couldn’t bear disappointing you. ‘Ten seconds.’
Keller breathed in another few times just relaxing into the final ten seconds of agony he had to endure before finally being able to stop.
‘That’s it, slow it down.’ You cheered, automatically reaching to slow the pace down to a walk. ‘Here.’ You handed him some water and it was only then he realised how sweaty he’d gotten, again he somehow felt awkward and embarrassed by himself.
‘Thank you.’ He panted, but waited until you were wandering over to your clipboard to actually gulp down half the bottle, anything to cool himself down. ‘How’d I do?’ He called, immediately regretting the use of energy.
‘Really good.’ You smiled broadly. ‘Yeah, to be honest, you exceeded my expectations.’
‘You sound surprised?’ Keller frowned playfully.
‘Not surprised, just… impressed.’ There was something really rather sweet about the way you spoke to him, looking down at your clipboard and making notes. ‘You’ll pass the physical, no question.’
‘Good to know. You need anything else from me?’
Keller watched your expression change from playful to your own brand of awkwardness, had he said something wrong? Was his tone off?
‘Er, no, just keep your pace for another three minutes before stretching off.’ You cleared your throat. ‘I’m just going to grab some more water. I’ll be back.’
Keller watched you leave the gym and he was more confused than before. He went over in his mind the encounter, but couldn’t quite place his finger on why your whole demeanour had changed all of a sudden.
You were gone for nearly five minutes, Keller had already decided to start stretching off when you returned.
‘How you getting on?’ You asked, back to your sweet demeanour.
‘Good, little sore in my knee, but I imagine it’s that old injury catching up to me again.’ He tried to laugh it off, tried to make you smile at his expense, which you did, but still a small layer of concern washed over your face.
‘Why don’t you hop on the bed and I’ll take a look?’
Keller was momentarily dazed, everything about that idea was appealing in ways he was ashamed to think about, but when he glanced in your direction he realised you meant the physio table behind you. Disappointment sat gently in his chest.
‘Sure.’ He swallowed. ‘Can’t hurt.’
You smiled again as Keller tried to brace himself, but nothing would ready him for the feel of your soft hands against his skin. He lay back and allowed you to work on his knee, testing mobility, flexibility and strength. It wasn’t anything intrusive, but he couldn’t help but feel warm under his skin.
‘You can jump down whenever you’re ready.’ You said, wandering back to your desk.
It was only when you were walking away that Keller realised his eyes were closed. He snapped them open and took a deep steady breath.
‘I don’t think it’s anything to worry about.’ You concluded. ‘If it starts to get painful, let me know and I’ll have another look. For the time being, stick to your recommended plan and I’ll find a time that suits for your tests.’
‘Perfect.’ Keller smiled, something in him was crying out to ask if you wanted to get a coffee with him, but he didn’t ask, he just let his mouth open and close before leaving.
He stood in the shower, letting the water run over his face and tracing over every part of the encounter you’d had. Why did he feel such a fool when you were around? Why did he never say the right thing?
Keller stepped out, wrapping a towel around his waist and trying to ignore the burn still coursing through his legs. As the Director of SHIELD, having his own locker room was a perk he enjoyed to no end, but it did allow for moments of quiet that he sometimes wished he didn’t have.
He took his time in putting his navy suit back on. His mind kept drifting back to seeing your demeanour change when he asked if there was anything else he could do for you. The way you looked down at the floor and broke the gaze shared between you, broke him in a small way.
Keller wondered if he should have asked you to get coffee regardless of any awkwardness, he was the Director for goodness sake, he shouldn’t have felt so tense about anything he felt. And yet, you disarmed him.
