TBWC - Positive Influences

Let it be said, Kitu doesn’t like Sheena.

She didn’t like the way Sheena used to tease and harass Black Sheep, who really just wanted to fit in. She really didn’t like the way she’d introduced her to the concept of ‘bullies.’ Doesn’t like that she’d had to repair her injured pride and broken heart, that she could trace at least 10% of Black Sheep’s worse martyr-ing traits back to Sheena and her harsh, sharp words at key points when Black Sheep had been vulnerable and easily influenced.

And she could honestly say that she hated Tigeress.

Tigeress who went out of her way to injure Carmen. Who ruthlessly targeted her like she was the criminal. Who continued to spit cruel comment after comment at Carmen and taunted and harassed and still tried to prove herself to her. The one regularly encountered VILE agent who probably wouldn’t care if Carmen died, who would probably sit with Paper Star laughing when it happened – who seemed to be in competition to make sure it happened.

And let it be said that if she were still, Beast the Manhunter she would’ve killed her.

It would be so easy to, with the caustic woman for once trembling at her feet, to just tear into her with her teeth. To slaughter her ruthlessly and devour the body, playing tactfully innocent with the rest of Team Red when they began to notice that Tigeress had stopped showing up. And maybe Shadowsan would notice, but he would say nothing – she was, after all the mindless creature the Faculty would’ve sent after him if she hadn’t already draped herself in red, hadn’t already bared her throat for Black Sheep and handed away the invisible leash they had always assumed was gripped tightly in their own hands.

And sure, he would likely leave irrefutable evidence of her attempt, maybe even permanently disable her – he was more experienced than she was after all – but she would still triumph, still end him, still erase him. She was a well-trained monster, forged specifically to dismember the best of the best.

But for some reason, Carmen still stepped in when one of her ex-friends got injured.

She still stepped in when the police were on their way, and they risked capture and revelation.

She still listened when they needed an ear, pulled her punches when she fought them, offered them hints when they got a bit turned around and an out when they asked.

For some reason, despite everything, Carmen still cared.

So Kitu lifts her hand further, fingers wrapped tightly around the hair of the man in her palms, drawing the attention of still shaking, shivering Tigeress. The agent's would be attacker moaned softly in pain, trembling from the pain likely radiating from his scalp, weapon discarded. He too bore a symbol of VILE upon his clothes - a betrayal it seemed, how interesting. It was something she might mention to Carmen if the situation became relevant. It would be easier to destroy them if they were busy with their own infighting - perhaps they could even use it to their advantage.

She enjoys in a passive sense, the thrill she gets from the woman flinching when she moves, still shuddering under her ripped close, seemingly too focused on the wolf before her to cater to the blood trying to slip between her finger when she slams the vile man’s face into the wall thrice more, sufficiently destroying what could’ve remained of his good looks before dropping him to the alley floor.

She eyed him with the same dispassion of a toddler watching a reviled vegetable touch the floor to be consumed by the family dog before moving towards the woman splayed on the ground. Tigeress scrambled away, fear dawning on her face as she jerked away from her palms only to be grasped by the scruff of her shirt like a misbehaving pup, setting her blankly on her feet. She ignored the hiss of pain as she looked her over – a cut on her eye, a busted lip with blood leaking from her nose and a steadily growing splotch of red in her abdomen. Still not enough blood to risk bleeding out, though, so she grunted and turned away.

“...there’s a clinic a couple streets over,” she grumbled. “Takes gang members and urchins. Doesn’t ask questions you don’t want asked. Classifies all nameless patients as ‘community outreach’ efforts.”

She stepped forward, wandering out of the alley and starting on her journey to the hotel.

“...why?”

Kitu paused and glanced over her shoulder, amber eyes locking on the now small and huddled form of a usually ferocious woman.

“Because despite everything, Black Sheep still loves you,” she says bluntly, not caring about the way the woman jerks sharply as if she’d been shot. “And if VILE made me nothing else, they made me a very loyal dog.”

She continues on her way back to the hotel she was currently sharing with the rest of her team, her family and pack. Those whom she loved and she struggled to understand loved her in return.

Kitu doesn’t see Sheena, Tigeress until two months later. Mostly patched up, her limp minimal at heist, gripping the latest valuable artifact between her palms. She stares at them for a brief moment, eyes locking on Carmen like she'd seen a ghost before drifting over Kitu and then…

She bolts.

She leaves the artifact, unaltered, unharmed, and vanishes as if she'd never been there to begin with.

“...huh,” says Carmen surprised, but her muscles relax the way they always do when she avoids a fight she really doesn’t want to happen. “I wonder what spooked her. I guess we should sweep to make sure there isn’t anyone else lying in wait.”

“Mm,” says Kitu.

“Do you know anything about this?” Carmen asks immediately, gesturing in the direction of the now long-gone woman.

“No master,” says Kitu automatically and Carmen Looks at her. Because it was a rather unfortunate tell, reverting swiftly back into respect and deference when she takes an action that she isn’t entirely sure Carmen would be on board with. A holdover from her training under her less… accepting masters.

And Carmen Looks at her but says, “Okay” and lets her off the hook this time.

It’s one more month when she sees Tigeress-Sheena again and she has dark circles under her eyes, she’s jittery and trembling like a hunted mouse. One more month before Tigeress-Sheena declares that she wants out and Team Red is scrambling to fabricate an identity for her, that Tigeress dies and Sheena disappears.

One more month before ‘Sarah’ throws her arms around Carmen and squeezed her tight and Kitu pretends not to hear the murmured, “Sorry I was a dick – I love you too Black Sheep” before she vanishes into the crowd as she was trained to do.

“Did you have anything to do with this?” Carmen asks again, but her lips are stretched so wide in her smile that it must hurt and her gray eyes are flashing through so many emotions that Kitu couldn’t possible identify them all.

“No master,” she answers.

And Carmen smiles and pressed a kiss to her forehead and lets it go.

It’s two years when she sees ‘Sara’ again – in good health, with plenty of food and no new bruises. Her limp is gone and her hair is glossy – she’s waiting in line to cross the street with someone, a someone whose arm is linked with hers and they're both windswept a little stupid smiley. It’s two years and Kitu is herself again, a bit more real and a little less restrained. Her lips curve upwards in a slight smirk and she nods, receiving one back.

Because you see, Kitu didn’t like Sheena.

And Kitu couldn’t stand Tigeress.

But Sara? Sara got her a kiss from her master.

And she supposes she can tolerate her for that.

Most of them yes!! I LOVE getting comments I screenshot and save every one I get.

6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Hm- I guess it depends. Hellscape ends with Carmen's internal monologue just before she gets mind-wiped by VILE, but its technically no angstier than canon. they gave you life (and in return you gave them hell) is pretty angsty the whole way through and examines Carmen's trauma.

Those are both little one-shots, though- I usually end my reigns of terror within chapter fics pretty happily if I can manage it. The Phantom AU (linked above) ends in a dark place but leagues brighter than it seemed to be heading towards. It isn't a terribly neat and happy ending, and it tells a story of trauma and attempted suicide and the road to recovery from these. Let's go with that one.

7. what's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

In Love Is A Locked Cell Door Chase Devineaux and Crackle happily start making out in a jail cell and live happily ever after!

Ok, being serious-

For a one-shot, simple (linked above) starts happy and ends happier.

For a chapter fic, Choice ends with Carmen, Julia, and Gray all living in a very happy polycule pardoned from the law with full emotional control of their lives which is fun :]

8. do you get hate on fics?

@emily-prentits used to leave passive aggressive comments on my wattpad and we would fight in the comments sections 💀now we're partners so make of that what you will. but anyway, no serious ones, no!

9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?

No, not really! I have a few "fade-to-blacks" or skip-overs without any detail. The one time I tried writing smut it was really forced and hard for me to write...doesn't help that I've never felt sexual attraction in my life so I don't know about that. Curse you asexuality for taking papertiger handcuff sex away from the world.

10. do you write crossovers? what's the craziest one you've written?

No, I'm not a fan of crossovers

11. have you ever had a fic stolen?

I've had one or two...heavily referenced. Not in bad faith, but it was funny to see a lot of my plot and prose mannerisms reworded in a younger author's fic. I think they credited me as inspiration or gifted it to me both times so its not a big deal.

I have not!

If FRANTIC FANFIC! counts, which it shouldn't lol. Also the polycule is working on something :3

I have an au where paper star and black sheep escape VILE together and go through a sort of friends to lovers to enemies deal as carmen (renamed cardinal here due to never escaping in the boat the way she does in canon), though influenced by paper star at the start, eventually finds her inevitable path of good while paper star slips into a chaos that cardinal just can't stomach

ill paste a snippet here that i wrote but its a little bit long and complex and i dont have a ton of motivation for it

cohesive plot...lord help me i cannot plan a fic to the end before i post chapter 1 and it bites me in the ass all the time

18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

if there's a small amount of it, i usually write it as-is in the other language and use external sources or context clues to explain it. if a lot of dialogue is in another language, I'll put it in brackets and write it in english!

20. favorite fic you've written?

that's really hard- i'm going to do top three in no particular order SORRY

Love, Carmen - this was the first or one of the first fics I ever wrote. it put me on the map a little bit (wattpad..) in terms of writing and boosted upon the sword and choice when they came along. it was really fun to just be young and writing after finishing all two released seasons of the show. i still like it a lot. its just cute and simple.

the phantom au - what a labor of love. i've had other fics (evil carlotta series, cough cough) that have been long and complex but those strayed into meandering and pointless and i lost a lot of motivation. phantom combined my love of theater with my favorite show and my hunger for angst angst angst. it was super fun to write and, at the risk of sounding vain, i pulled off a very hard to pull off trope at the end and i think i did it well. i think if you read any one of mine, this highlights a lot of my strengths.

the cardinal and the kitten - this is a popular one of mine that kind of serves as an updated love, carmen. i really enjoy how i wrote carmen and julia playing off of each other and my dialogue is very strong in this one.

okay, sorry about how long that was i treated it like a professional interview. i had a lot of fun writing this instead of working on a very important school project

Bro, the timeline in Carmen Sandiego is super finicky, and I'm pretty sure I've spent more time thinking about this than the creators intended us to, but WHATEVER. It haunts me.

Right, so the creators said Carmen is 20 at the start of the series, but as I said: that math don't math!

Season one takes place over the course of six months:

Season 2 picks up one week after season 1, in February. We know this because they're celebrating Carnival.

For the purpose of breaking down this theory, I'm going to place Carmen's birthday as March 1st, her WOEICs counterpart's official birthday.

So. At the end of season one, which would have been mid-February, Player says something about how Carmen was found on the side of the road twenty years ago, but if her birthday was in a mere matter of weeks, couldn't you theorize that he was rounding up? Maybe she's 19 turning 20.

Or, maybe, she's 20 turning 21? No!

At the end of season 2, Shadowsan says he found her twenty years ago. This is where we take a detour to discuss infant development.

In the flashbacks, we see that baby Carmen prefers crawling-- she can toddle a little bit, but not well. Children typically begin standing between 7 and 12 months, and walking between 10 and 18 months. We also see that she babbles and coos a lot, but no words. Children tend to say their first word at around 12 months. Based on this, I'd wager that baby Carmen was around seven or eight months old. We know she's a physical prodigy, so she could potentially be even younger-- the youngest recorded baby to walk was six months old.

Placing baby at 7 months when she was kidnapped, that makes Shadowsan's "I found you twenty years ago" accurate to the month. At this point, Carmen is 20 years and 7 months old.

Season three takes place in October/November. Presumably, season three picks up right after season two, putting the end of season two in October. It spans about the same length as season one.

While the word of the creators doesn't have much bearing here-- as this post is very much a "you guys are wrong and here's why" kind of post-- one of the creators did say that they imagined Carmen as being twenty by season three. That would make it impossible for her to have been twenty during season one. Too much time has passed for that to work.

Season 4 takes place sometime around February. We know this because Devineaux asks Gray what he was doing on the train to Poitiers 18 months ago. 12 months ago would have been February (start of season 2) and six months before that is August. That's eighteen months.

Going by this, I think Carmen was yoinked just after her twenty-first.

Interestingly, if my math is mathing-- and who knows, I turned a two year degree into a three year degree because I kept failing math classes, I could be talking actual nonsense right now-- this makes Player like 17/18 by season four, and that's hilarious to me because that means his parents (tried) to make him go to school for like the last semester of his senior year. Free my boy 😭

In conclusion, Carmen is 19 at the start of season one, she and Player are three years apart, and Player's parents are some cruel mfers. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

"Three years, huh?" Kitu said thoughtfully, nodding slowly to herself. That was plenty of time - they had a team now, Julia already had the beginnings of a crush on Carmen and Shadowsan finally got his head out of his ass enough to be a proper father figure. Good. She put the red rose she coughed up an hour ago into a vase. If she coughs up one every day, she could make a bouquet. Then she wipes her search history and the meta-data, closes her laptop, and starts planning the caper.
