In September I posted about it being Stanley Kubrick Filmography Marathon time again, whenever I got around to them...well, I eventually got around to them all & my order of least to most favorite of his 13 films has changed some again: 13) Fear and Desire [first film, hadn't hit his stride yet, but still had recognizable qualities] 12)Lolita [still a weird & uncomfortable film, well made & all, but not particularly enjoyable for me] 11) Eyes Wide Shut [his last film was again, well made & certainly visually impressive, but also not particularly enjoyable for me to watch] 10) Killer's Kiss [his 2nd film, still a bit rough, but definitely establishing visual style & other signs of genius to come] 9) Spartacus [it's well made, but probably the film with the most outside interference] 8) Barry Lyndon [a visual masterpiece, crafted with a masterful hand, possible drawback being, it's a bit of a miserable story] 7) A Clockwork Orange [a very unique, shocking, well crafted, futuristic for-its-time, film on violence, among other things] 6) Full Metal Jacket [one of multiple anti-war war films, & like A Clockwork Orange, one of his more visceral films] 5) Paths of Glory [his best anti-war war film, depending how one classifies, and the better of the two films with Kirk Douglas, and a masterpiece of its genre] 4) The Killing [only his 3rd film, already a masterpiece of the noir genre, it's continued to grow on me] 3) 2001: A Space Odyssey [yeah, that's right it's not my favorite or even 2nd, so what, it's still an undeniable masterpiece] 2) Dr. Strangelove [another masterpiece, the black comedy of black comedies, I love this film] & number 1) The Shining [this is still my favorite. [I can't very well not do the final post! Sure, 50 would've been a nice number, but it's not like I planned it... Anyway, this is it!] 🌲 Blu Christmas Holiday Movie Asplosion 2022! ⛄ Chapter 51: It's a Wonderful Life 🦌 And here we are again, at the end of the marathon, with the best holiday film of all time (in my opinion). Surprising no one yet again, the top place goes to Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life". Initially not very successful in theaters or reviews (though appreciated by the critics who did recognize, and nominated for multiple Oscars), it was only decades later it became recognized widely as the classic it is, even as one of the best of all time, according to many. I already knew the amazing restoration and 4K looked great, but wow can I really appreciate it on the setup I have now. Aside from some of the hokey angels/heaven effects (and writing) at the beginning, it is truly one of the masterpieces of filmmaking. So that's that! Happy Holidays! Merry Christmas! Happy New Year! Blu Christmas Holiday Movie Asplosion 2022! ⛄ Chapter 50: White Christmas 🦌 I adore this movie. It already looked pretty amazing to me on the blu-ray I have of it, but I am excited to now see how it looks on my current setup (that's right, I've finally caught up to myself in my posting). That said, I really wish they would do a full loving, detailed, quality restoration/4K transfer. Or at least, and good 4K transfer of the previous good restoration. Anyways, we got Bing and Irving Berlin again, in a movie named for the most popular song written for the previous film, and this time around no horrendous blackface, plus, the directing of Michael Curtiz. Add to that, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, Vera-Ellen, and more! Also, it's just a better movie than Holiday Inn regardless. Blu Christmas Holiday Movie Asplosion 2022! ⛄ Chapter 49: A Christmas Carol 🦌 People's opinions will always differ, and I respect the perfectly valid arguments for other versions and other Scrooges, but for my money, I think this is the best overall adaptation of A Christmas Carol, and I absolutely, unequivocally believe George C. Scott is the best Ebenezer Scrooge I have seen. Plus it features the brilliant David Warner (the ultimate British "oh hey, it's that guy" actor) as Cratchit. In fact, the entire cast is pretty perfect for it, with the possible exception of Tiny Tim, but I may just be saying that because he is disconcerting to look upon... (no offense, Anthony Walters, but young you was slightly creepy.) Blu Christmas Holiday Movie Asplosion 2022! ⛄ Chapter 48: Miracle on 34th Street 🦌 Another undisputed classic, this is one of those ones that for any number of people is their number one (of course, every one of these is probably someone's number one, but this is probably a great many peoples'). As mentioned earlier in the marathon, I enjoyed the remake, but the original is leagues better. It's one of the best examples of sentimentalism through a film, without relying on being too overly sweet and saccharine to sustain it. And Edmund Gwenn is a superb Santa Claus. One of the best I've seen. Blu Christmas Holiday Movie Asplosion 2022! ⛄ Chapter 47: The Muppet Christmas Carol 🦌 While this may not be the version of A Christmas Carol that I personally feel is the best version (though close), I do think it's probably the most enjoyable to watch, and the coziest feeling, and of course, the most Muppety version (and because of the inclusion of Gonzo as Charles Dickens, it may be the version with the most actual writing from the original book). Wherever it places in your heart, there's no denying its charm. Also, Michael Caine is an excellent Scrooge. Also, this was the first theatrical Muppets release after Jim Henson had passed, as well as the first movie directed by his son, Brian Henson. Oh, and you can bet I didn't stay restricted to just my blu-ray for this one, as Disney+ has released the 30th anniversary edition of it with the song "When Love is Gone" seemlessly restored (though the "full length" version is only available under the Special Features for it, oddly) and the whole thing in a pretty good 4K scan. Blu Christmas Holiday Movie Asplosion 2022! ⛄ Chapter 46: Hogfather 🦌 I mentioned the profound effect the previous film had on young me, well I think it's safe to say that Terry Pratchett has had the greatest effect on me of any author (he is my favorite author of all time, without doubt). To say I was excited when I learned a live action movie was being made of one of the Discworld novels would be an understatement. And it was one of my favorites, Hogfather! As soon as I was able to find a way to watch it here (in the U.S.) I did, and bought the DVD as soon as it was available, then went on to try and acquire any/every version of it I could find on blu-ray as I discovered they were available. It still makes me sad that Sir Pratchett is no longer with us these several years later, but there is such of wealth of his creation to enjoy that I think I'll get by. Anyways, I like this TV movie-- it has its flaws, as anything does (editing is a bit off in places, and a couple moments seem forced off camera presumably due to what the effects would've cost), but it more than makes up for it in humor, charm, and entertainment. Blu Christmas Holiday Movie Asplosion 2022! ⛄ Chapter 45: The Nightmare Before Christmas 🦌 Two of the films that had some of the most profound effect on a young me both came out in 1993. The first was Jurassic Park, the other was The Nightmare Before Christmas. Both were theater experiences unlike any other I had encountered, and transported me in ways I hadn't realized movies could do. Tim Burton's masterpiece (even though he didn't direct it) perfectly combined darkness and silliness, fantasy and grim yet light comedy, and my two favorite holidays. It introduced to an artistic and cinematic style, as well as an aesthetic that I didn't know existed, nor that I had apparently been looking for it. And it did this all in the form of breathtaking stop-motion (which I'd previously thought corny), and a musical (which I accepted without hesitation, even at a time when I believed "I don't like musicals!" which proved hilariously inaccurate regardless). Blu Christmas Holiday Movie Asplosion 2022! ⛄ Chapter 44: A Christmas Carol [1951] 🦌 As far as I'm concerned we've already entered the point where everything remaining is an undeniable classic (starting with the original Grinch, if not further back), and speaking of classics, this version of A Christmas Carol is considered by a great many to be The classic version. It is the classic that others are generally measured against. Is it my favorite? No, that's yet to come, but I can definitely see why the Alastair Sim Christmas Carol (released as "Scrooge" in the UK) is as beloved as it is. Alastair Sim is great, he has a wonderful mix of seriousness & indirect comedy that the part should be played with. Blu Christmas Holiday Movie Asplosion 2022! ⛄ Chapter 43: Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas 🦌 The original and still the best version, even if it's less than a half hour long. It is very fittingly considered a classic. It crafted brilliantly, from an impressive confluence of talent, and holds up to this day. The combination of Dr. Seuss (the creator), Chuck Jones (the director), Boris Karloff (voice of the Grinch and the narrator), and the song, as sung by Thurl Ravenscroft (famous as voice of Tony the Tiger for many years), it just, well a very impressive combination. Blu Christmas Holiday Movie Asplosion 2022! ⛄ Chapter 42: Holiday Inn 🦌 Ugh. I want to like this movie more. It in theory *should* be higher on the list. But the fact is, no matter how good, entertaining, classic, etc the rest of the film is, it will be forever and always marred by racism. I don't care that it was literally 80 years ago, and that "minstrel" shows and blackface were still common, and supposedly accepted then. It was racism then, it's racism now. While I appreciate them doing at least the bare minimum by including a note about it at this start of the film (I added a shot of it), and and extra feature discussing it featuring mostly POC, it nevertheless is uncomfortable, unentertaining, and again, racist. I still fast forward through it every time. Okay, that aside, this is another that just came out on 4K this year, and the picture does look good, and, if not for the aforementioned problem, the movie would be a top notch classic. Blu Christmas Holiday Movie Asplosion 2022! ⛄ Chapter 41: The Man Who Invented Christmas 🦌 This movie is one that seems to just continue going higher and higher in my list each year, I just, really enjoy this movie. This somewhat fanciful version of Charles Dickens writing of the immortal "A Christmas Carol" is just so very charming and entertaining, and has many good performances. And Christopher Plummer shines as (essentially) Scrooge, though most of the cast do an excellent job. Blu Christmas Holiday Movie Asplosion 2022! ⛄ Chapter 40: Scrooged 🦌 And on with the ever shifting positions, it's Scrooged, which I am slightly less enthused about this year, but overall still think is quite good, and definitely funny. It's also another with a very strong supporting cast. This is an odd detail to focus in on, but I really wish Jeffrey Joseph (I believe that was the actor) had a bigger part. I think his only line may have been to laugh sycophantically at a joke, but it just really stands out, for some reason I find it hilarious. Anyways, Robert Mitchum, Carol Kane, Buddy Hackett, several more- there were plenty of great little parts to appreciate. Blu Christmas Holiday Movie Asplosion 2022! ⛄ Chapter 39: Elf 🦌 Next in this section of ever-shifting positions, and another that is nowhere near new, but is new to 4K, we have "Elf". The 4K is another that looks pretty dang good (though again, I've really been noticing how much better most things look on my TV/player/etc these days). Anyways, I know there seems to be a lot of one extreme or the other opinions on Will Ferrell out there, while personally, I have no issues with him, but I will say, for his movies, they tend to feel like they're good when they're good, but real bad when they're bad. In any case, I think Elf is great, it's probably the Will Ferrell movie I ultimately enjoy the most. Blu Christmas Holiday Movie Asplosion 2022! ⛄ Chapter 38: A Charlie Brown Christmas [+bonus: A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving] 🦌 Considering part of this classic's charm is how simply it's drawn & amimated, it manged to look surprisingly good on this 4K transfer (which I just discovered has been out for 5 years already). Anyways, one of the things that made it stand out in its day is one of the things I like least about it, which is its overly religious/christian bent. But aside from its preachiness (something that did not happen in cartoons at the time), it is just a very charming, ridiculous, quick little classic. They sure are needlessly cruel to poor Chuck for a good part of A Charlie Brown Christmas though. And speaking of, I also decided to watch A Charlie Brown Christmas Thanksgiving, in which Peppermint Patty in particular is, I would say, frustratingly awful to him. Blu Christmas Holiday Movie Asplosion 2022! ⛄ Chapter 37: Pocketful of Miracles 🦌 Just so much movement in the list this year (understandable, since I didn't actually add any completely new ones this year), but in any case, this is another that has moved up some again. Though worth noting, the next several movies (including this) have regularly changed their order in my head (and will probably continue to) all along as I've done all this. So, take their order with a grain of salt (or a pinch of pepper, I'm not your boss), but for the moment I'll stick with this order. Anyways, this may pale in comparison to Capra's most beloved films, but this, his last film, was actually quite good (and itself a Christmasy-time set remake of his own much earlier "Lady for a Day"). There are a couple not terribly surprising but nonetheless problematic jokes, but overall quite enjoyable. And Bette Davis should definitely get noted for her performance, but far and away the highlight of the film is Peter Falk. Blu Christmas Holiday Movie Asplosion 2022! ⛄ Chapter 36: The Holiday 🦌 The Holiday is another one that seems to keep going up a bit on a my list each year. It's almost hard for me to believe now that I used to look on it as "kinda similar to Love Actually but not as good". What was I thinking. It is clearly superior, and not like it beyond elements of romantic comedy and some crossing of stories in a holiday film. Anyways, the highlight for me will probably always be Eli Wallach, he was a treasure and I'm sad he's gone (even if it has been 8 years, and he was already 90 when he filmed this movie! That is baffling!
