I rarely post about work, but…

This is 100% cathartic, so I won’t be offended if you just scroll past.

What I do takes me away from home for 4 months at a time, sometimes more. I’ve been working like this for nearly 5 years now and I love it!

When it comes time to go home for my “vacation” I always have mixed feelings. I’m usually ready to gone home but also sad to leave behind my colleagues and friends who become my family while I’m away on contract.

This contract was shaping up to be no different, until a new person came into management. This person bought with them an appalling attitude and abuse. I began trying to help them settle in by showing them the way, explaining the nuances of the company, trying to assist them however I could. This was not taken as intended.

It got to the point where I was being totally gas lit. Whenever this person made a mistake they would blame it on me, without me being there to defend myself. They would make up stories of conversations that never happened. And completely deny those that did, Take full credit for my successes. And force blame in my direction when I had nothing to do with the problem.

Whispers started to go around the team. I noticed peoples attitudes and behaviours towards me change.

I began to withdraw.

In the last 48hrs I’ve had a family loss and it’s resulted in me going home early.

People I know who would have been super supportive of me during a hard time like this before are completely ignoring me. They are actively avoiding me. I have no support. I feel sad, and lost.

I always go home a different person to the person that began a contract. Usually a stronger, more self assured, more confident and competent person who has gained knowledge, skills and experience. A better version of myself.

This contract, I don’t recognise myself anymore. I’m broken. A shadow of the upbeat, happy, confident and capable person I was before.

We talk about narcissists in romantic relationships, but what about working ones?

2 months working with this person has left me permanently damaged and I don’t know how to recover. The amount of work I’m now going to have to do to try to rebuild and find my drive, energy and identity again is unfathomable.

This narcissists, will go on as if nothing happened.
