Yeah, having taught a fair number of systems to different people (been playing DnD and other tabletop systems for over two decades now). DnD is actually relatively very difficult to introduce new players to (it's a little easier if they've ingested some actual plays but if they haven't... and especially if they chose a mechanically complex character to start? Buckle up, that's going to be some heavy lifting from the GM to start).
Understanding how everything comes together and interacts is the opposite of intuitive. Especially if you're expecting your players to help by learning their part rather than juggling it all for them. If an experienced GM is handling most of the mechanics for you it might feel more intuitive but also, that brings up the issue of learning as a GM. And the learning curve there is really steep with DnD. And you can play for years and have good system mastery and still stumble on the rules, or have continued with some basic misconceptions for that whole time. (Also just the claim that WoTC cares more about accessibility issues than any of the indies out there is... laughable...).
Hell, if you actually are enamoured of and want a DnD-like/DnD adjacent system that, in my experience, is easier to teach to new players, easier to learn, and way easier on first time GMs (way less mental juggling needed on mechanics, so easier to get used to the rest). Try Numenera.
You do of course understand that the reason most people prefer DND 5E is that it's one of the easiest systems to learn? Like I'm sorry it's all well and good to 'break up the cultural monopoly' but I have Dyscalculia and DND is seemingly the only tabletop system that doesn't consistently ask me to do a hefty amount of complex math. I've never given WOTC a penny but the reason I've primarily played 5E over basically everything else is it's the only system that was extremely easy to learn and completely self explanatory. (Also - I like elves and magic and shit.) You roll one dice to see if you can do a thing, you add whatever your plus or minus is, and then roll damage where appropriate. Easy. Meanwhile seemingly everything else is like "Okay so you roll two dice except sometimes it's four and then you take this stat and you divide it by that dice roll and then you add a number equivalent to the day of the week unless it's a leap year then you times that by three and if you get a prime number you can lift that coffee cup." Like have you ever heard of Villains and Vigilantes, for instance? It's fucking insane. Like I'm not saying I don't get why you wanna make this point? But I feel like I have to point out that most people who make indie TTRPG's don't seem to focus on accessibility when designing their systems and they are EXTREMELY intimidating for new players. And often, what people who are big into TTRPG's do is assume that because THEY fully understand this system and how it works, new players will too just as easily. The amount of times I've spoken to a GM, said "This sounds a bit complicated", and they've gone "No no no it's easy" and then described the most complicated set of rules I've ever heard is ridiculous.
Okay it sounds you've had a very narrow range of experiences with RPGs then because D&D 5e is on the higher end of complexity when it comes to RPGs and most indie RPGs are actually a lot less complex than D&D 5e. Like, Villains & Vigilantes is not the median when it comes to RPG complexity. There are systems even lighter than D&D out there. :)

📜 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗺! Teleportation Map
Scroll, very rare ___
This map is delicately inked on a magic scroll and kept in an elaborate travel case. Almost every “teleportation map” is different: some show maps of entire continents, whereas others are of local city streets or their immediate surroundings. When found, the GM decides the area and scale of the map on the scroll.
While holding the scroll, you can use an action to speak its command word and touch a point on the outstretched map. When you do, you and up to seven other creatures of your choice that are touching you are teleported to the spot you touched on the map. That spot on the map is then incinerated, leaving a charred 1-inch-radius circle around the point. If you touch a spot on the scroll that’s charred and speak its command word, nothing happens.
Maps on a smaller scale can teleport you more accurately than those on a larger one. The GM decides how close you are to the intended target depending on where you touch the map in relation to its size and scale.
Each time you use this scroll, roll a d20. On a 1, the scroll bursts into flames (after teleporting you) and is destroyed. This number increases by 1 each time the map’s been used, after the first. When found, the map has been used 1d6 − 3 times (minimum 0). ___

My Dragon Age Inquisition character card embroideries all together! Each is 11.5x19.5 cm. Dorian took 73 hours, Cassandra took 89 hours, and Sera took 75 hours.
I wonder which character I'll do next...
-
[Image descriptions: Embroidered versions of the Dorian, Cassandra and Sera character selection card from Dragon Age Inquisition.
Dorian holds a book under his left arm while casting magic with his right. There are white glyphs in the air and a white snake running under his cloak and under his arm.
Cassandra sits atop a war horse with Inquisition soldiers behind her. She wears black armour with a gold-trimmed cloak, and the Seeker flag and he cloak stream behind her.
Sera stands atop a slanted tree trunk with her bow held suggestively between her legs, looking at the Skyhold tower in the distance, where the tiny figure of the inquisitor is present in the window. Mountains and turrets make up the background behind her.]
