Once again recommending new show The Artful Dodger to Cressworth fans! It’s out on Hulu in the US and Disney+ basically everywhere else including the UK
The main couple is literally Audrey Rose and Thomas in a different font and it’s got cons and heists and good writing and character development and obviously killer angsty romance where they’re friends and colleagues and have mutual respect but so much tension and witty banter and it’s EVERYTHING

i need more people to comprehend the tragic life haymitch had
like
-reaped into the 2nd quarter quell along with twice the amount of tributes and half the chance of winning
-refuses to participate in the games and hides at the border, ends up getting pulled back in watches his only ally die. he tried to avoid playing the capitols game but ends up winning it. through a trick.
-since the capitol doesn't like how he won everyone important to him is killed, he is 16 alone in the victors village
-a year later we can assume he's sent to mentor the next set of 12 tributes and that goes poorly. he is 17 trying to teach children how not get slaughtered but they will.
-then the year after that. and the year after that. again and again
-at some point he turns to alcohol, because that's what twelve has to offer in terms of substances. and he's got the money to develop a habit, it certainly helps with the annual watch a bunch of kids die and maybe try help two of them not trip.
-his house is in pieces. dirty, smashed furniture from drunken nightmares, full of mess but empty really. it's just him there. we don't see him interact with people outside of other victors and effie. we can assume he's a regular at the hobb but he doesn't have people who care enough to check up on him.
-by the time it's Katniss and Peetas turn he's watched 46 District 12 tributes die. the other victors are the only consistent figures in his life that might understand what he's going through but they have other victors to go home with, tributes with a chance in the games.
his life is so utterly depressing but the way he manages to pull himself out of it enough to help Katniss because he realised she actually has a chance. The fact that 24 years later he managed to put effort in after so many tributes failed. and it worked. she won.

the part where they cut off the games to broadcast the president's son died with "an important life was taken today" SECONDS AFTER watching a pile of dead district children was chilling

the way coral said "I killed them all for nothing" just before whe was bitten by a snake hit so hard. because for the whole games you saw her as a villian, as a bad person. But, just like everyone in that arena, she wanted to see her family and friends again, she was just a kid that wanted to live. And her last thought was about the innocent souls she had to kill for that.

PSA: all stjr fans out there you should check out Hulu’s new show The Artful Dodger! It’s a continuation of Oliver Twist focusing on Jack Dawkins who’s s a surgeon and former thief in the 1850s. The love interest, Belle, is the governor’s daughter who wants to be the first female surgeon!
The romance isn’t the whole plot but it was so good and gave me major cressworth vibes! The tropes and angst were also *chefs kiss* in my opinion. 8 episodes starring Thomas Brodie Sangster and Maia Mitchell! Highly recommend!
Oh also it’s on hulu in the US and Disney plus basically everywhere else I think it also doesn’t come out until January in the UK

Spoilers!
My main thing with acftl more than any of the unanswered questions or undeveloped plot lines or missed opportunities really comes down to personal preference lol
I just really wished that we truly got to see Jacks fight for Eva. Like it was pitched as “May the best villain win.” And “Two villains, one girl, and a deadly battle for happily ever after.” And I was really hoping it’d truly be a battle between him and Apollo but then they barely interacted (although I absolutely loved the moment he finally punched him in the face).
Like I figured we’d see Jacks maybe not quite as villainous at first and see him more hesitant because he saw her die but I was hoping it would play out that maybe at first he was staying away from Eva to protect her because he thought that she was safer with Apollo and the memory loss was his fault. (And again that’s personal preference some people love the brand of angst that comes with him thinking he caused her memory loss and leaving because he’s trying to protect her. It’s just not my cup of tea.) But then I was hoping he’d find out it was actually because of Apollo much earlier and that it would be a turning point and he’d realize that he is good enough and then we’d really get to see him fight for her. Like the “I am your monster.” Line was so perfect and more of what I wanted to see from him.
And again total personal preference but I didn’t want to see him be noble and give up the girl for her own good at all. I wanted to see him be selfish and then realize that actually no he’s better than Apollo and it’s not selfish and double down. I wanted him to obsess over her and stop at nothing for her. Like honestly I wanted to see more of the side of him that was intent on getting Tella but turned towards Eva.
Like we always hear how horrible and evil and ruthless the fates are I wanted to see him become that horrible fate for Eva just a little bit. I didn’t want to see Eva racing to save him from Aurora I wanted to see him racing to save Eva from Apollo. I wanted to see more of him begging her to remember and fighting to show her that Apollo was evil. I wanted to see his relief and their reunion when she got her memories back. I wanted another scene of him comforting her after she got hurt like in the Hollow. And I wanted a bigger confession and kiss scene.
Idk that’s just me. I’ll always champion the guy fighting for the girl and I’m never a fan of the guy bowing out or stepping down even if it’s because he’s trying to protect her or because he doesn’t believe he’s good enough. Like the guy giving up the girl is never my brand of angst I’ll always take him going too far for her instead.
Again all personal preference and me creating expectations in my head while waiting! It was a good book and despite my criticisms I did have a good time and I do like the book! I’m honestly just glad we got our evajacks endgame!

I finished acftl at 3am and have spent the day pondering and here are my thoughts (spoilers)
- first I will preface that I think a lot of my thoughts stem from a combo of me overhyping it in my head during the wait and my personal preferences and tastes this is not a bad book by any means
- I think overall it was a good time but it felt sort of disjointed and the subplots didn’t really connect super well
- I feel like it didn’t wrap things up super neatly considering this is the finale of the trilogy (that could be on purpose if she’s planning to write more but it’s still unsatisfying) like where was Luc? What happened to Marisol? I would’ve liked to check back in with Valenda things like that.
- i just felt like there were a lot of missed opportunities like with the last scar on her wrist and kiss that she owed Jacks and I really wished the memory loss had played out differently (more on this in my other post) I felt like she called attention to Martine and Havelock but then they didn’t do much.
- there were really just a ton of unanswered questions from the last two books as well like who was the one flaying Apollo? Why the apples (I know that was left unanswered on purpose but still) Just backstory in general about the Valors and the first fox and even Evangeline’s parents
-also who sent the assassin to her room?!
- some of the things added in this book just felt random the Aurora subplot was completely unnecessary and it came in pretty late in the book it and felt like a weird shift away from Apollo as the villain. The whole two hearts thing was also odd and the tree of souls (I was expecting the Phoenix tree to play a much bigger role and wasn’t expecting a whole new tree)
- I felt like Apollo needed to be fleshed out more since he was so central this book and he’s spent the last two books as less of a character and more as a plot device.
- I also really wanted a grander confession scene and kiss scene (chap 42 almost felt like a placeholder she was supposed to go back and add more to lol) like we’ve been waiting so long. I also wanted another hollow type scene where he was helping her after she got hurt idk stuff like that I could never have too many evajacks scenes.
- my biggest thing (and this really comes down to personal preference) I wanted the book to really play up the “may the best villain win” “Two villains, one girl, and a deadly battle for happily ever after.” And I felt like it just didn’t (I made a separate post explaining this further because this is long enough already lol)
-anyways despite all of this at the end of the day I’m happy that evajacks got their happy ending and are endgame that truly was all I could’ve asked of this book like despite all of the things I just listed it really is nitpicks because at least they’re together and in love and I was screaming and giggling and kicking my feet while reading and it was a good time lol

mastermind by taylor swift is literally about the journey of jacks prince of hearts in ouabh and tbona. him telling evangeline that none of that was an accident, that she was right where he wanted her to be: ‘’what if i told you none of it was accidental and the first night that you saw me, nothing was gonna stop me?’’ and this part?????? ‘’no one wanted to play with me as a little kid so i’ve been scheming like a criminal ever since, to make them love me and make it seem effortless. this is the first time i’ve felt the need to confess and i swear, i’m only cryptic and machiavellian ‘cause i care.'’ is his full description.

"Just like I killed the Fox"
"As soon as I kissed her, she died"
Jacks, probably: *Must erase existence in her life or will kiss her-* No I don't love her what made you think that
Is it just me or does this scene read like:
Obscure Morbid Confession
Jacks: *realises the confession was too obscure* wait lemme explain- do you wanna know how the story ends??
"I killed her by kissing her"

do y’all ever just SCREAM because Annabeth wanted to create something permanent, something memorable and unforgettable and when Hera took Percy’s memories, she couldn’t pry Annabeth from his head,,, what Annabeth built after all wasn’t a building or a temple but a friendship based in love and mutual trust so strong that not even the queen of the gods could tear the memory of that away from him

my theory for this quote here is: jacks finding out what happened to evangeline (hopefully, he's showing all the despair he feels at losing her again and in complete denial) or eva finding out about something minor.
Tumblr media
THIS ONE! i hope it's jacks interacting with evangeline, him looking at her in a more provocative way or hugging her. maybe an affectionate scene with a little more spicy hint, which i would love! since it's still page 100, it could also be apollo kissing evangeline or something related to it. maybe luc, too, as he's a vampire lol
Tumblr media
about this! stephanie is putting a lot of emphasis on this ''one bed'' trope, and i think it could be a delightful scene where the two are going to an inn and end up finding themselves in a ''one bed'' situation. i wonder what's going to happen, and YOU KNOW what we all mutually want to happen (either the hint of a smut, or a really cute and cuddly moment between the two.)
Tumblr media
as i've seen it mentioned for this one: probably jacks kidnapped evangeline lol it's not improbable at all, he's totally unhinged. but i also think it's possible it's jacks and eva together talking about someone else.
Tumblr media
by the way, she's giving me a hard time with these disjointed hints instead of whole quotes (like she did with apollo and evangeline). it's interesting, but they are not complete quotes and i don't know where and how they fit. she wants to kill her readers before the book comes out. 😅

Haymitch, for all of his flaws, started a generational change that rippled out.
He didn't have much he could do to protect Katniss and Peeta from going into the Games, from Snow, from the Quell, or the war, but he wasn't going to let them lose each other. He knew what that was like, losing an ally (Maysilee) and a love ("my girl") and he might not be able to save them from all the Capitol put them through, but he pulled out every wile and connection and every minute of semi-sobriety he had in him to help his kids have a better life with each other, to not be alone and miserable like he was.
And how in turn Katniss and Peeta of course can't protect their kids from the pain of life, from their parents' nightmares, from the history they have to learn, from the worry it might happen again, but they built a life of full bellies and safety and love for them, so that in turn their children can have a better life, too.
