Reading the old Red Tornado comics I love him so much.

For those unaware, Ma Hunkel was a single mom who owned a small grocery shop in Manhattan, and when her daughter and his friend were kidnapped by some gangster's, she was inspired by the Green Lantern of the time to throw together a costume and save them, starting her own career as a mystery man, the Red Tornado. The Red Tornado is consistently referred to as a man, even by Ma Hunkel herself (even though she is controlling of the image of Red Tornado in other ways). This makes her both the first superhoine to be published AND the first gnc superhero. Her stories are often about her economic situation and comedic in tone, such as when her sidekicks force a unscrupulous landlord to live in the conditions he expects others to, causing him to start order repairs for his tenants. She also liked to punch fascists. She's just so cool I love her.

this scene where todd shows up and seems to be scaring some people (on accident) and it's hard to recognize him and Jen immediately tries to save him b/c THATS WHAT SHE WOULD DO makes me think of the shadowlands plotline in JSA

thinking of how much better that ableist shadowlands plot (link) in JSA 1999 would've been if Todd was treated as someone who was not beyond redemption or help like.... we could have Jen being one of the people who is trying to reach out to Todd (rather than like. randomly crying and being afraid of him and otherwise doing nothing at all about the plot), we could see the characters acknowleding that todd is lashing out in pain (and that him being a mentally ill abuse survivor does not make him just 'born bad' or beyond help). we should still keep the only good moment of that plotline tho, which was todd utterly owning karkull (link)

Tbh I don't even see the lanterns as a polycule. You know that toxic straight couple that keeps breaking up and getting back together? That's Hal. With everyone. Meanwhile Kyle is in a committed monogamous relationship with both Guy and John and cheating on them with each other and other people including Hal and he feels no shame about it because he's convinced he's the protagonist in a harem anime and he WILL have his cadre of waifus. John is desperately trying to introduce them to the concept of polyamory but only Guy listens to him. Carol is convinced Hal is cheating on her with all of them and she's like NOT IF I CHEAT ON HIM FIRST (they are not dating) WITH THE SAME PEOPLE. Alan is there, trying to get Kyle to marry one of his children. Guy nods along to John's 70 slide PowerPoint about how polyamory would solve all of their problems and then he goes and makes Hal and Kyle worse because he thinks it's hot to see them fight over him. John is the true victim here tbh. Justice for John.
