Connor blinks again.

Chapter 4 of Breaking the Ice is finally done !! It took me a lot longer than last time but this chapter is also the longest so far and I’m quite happy with how it turned out!! c:

I can only talk for myself, but I’ve noticed that a majority of the time I end up with a creativity “block” post writing it’s due to anxiety. I keep overthinking everything. Did I use too many tags? Did I not use enough? Is my summary precise yet interesting? Is my title good enough or too generic? Do readers truly want to hear me when they comment or am I imposing? 

What started to help me is trying to rely on my gut instinct more and trust myself. So I try to “just get it over with” and tell myself that I’m good enough and I don’t need to achieve perfection until I start to believe it. Now I use the tags that I have in mind without trying to analyze too much. If I catch myself starting to overthink, I stand up from my computer and leave, until I feel like my head has settled down again. The first or second title I can come up with is usually the one I chose anyway so now I just note down the first few things I have in mind. And I always answer comments even if it’s “just” a thank you. 

Our minds can learn and even though this has been hard to follow, recently it’s started to get easier. The more I try not to actively seek out perfection, the more comfortable I am with what I do.

I don’t know if anyone has had similiar troubles, but I thought I’d share!! 

I usually answer every comment I get on my fictions and heaving published in different genres, I realized, how different comments are based on that fact. On a recent fic most comments were basically the same ("This is cute") and I love it and blush every time I read it, but I find it hard to reply to those, as I don't want to just copy&paste a "thank you" and show my readers, how that I appreciate them individually. Any advice? (hope, it's not too confusing. You're awesome

A lot of authors have this concern, that saying ‘thank you’ to more than one person or using a similar thanks each time is somehow not good enough. You just said yourself that every time you read “this is cute” you love it and blush. Well, every reader who gets a personal “thank you” from an author they admire feels the same way. 

Just because we have a limited number of ways to say “thank you” doesn’t make it any less sincere. And it certainly doesn’t make it any less appreciated on the other side :)

“We’re in the middle of a thunderstorm and you wanna stop and feel the rain?”

Inretrospect it had been a pretty stupid idea to walk to the store when theweather forecast had clearly warned all citizens to stay home for the day. 

Gavinwould’ve complied with that happily, if it hadn’t been for Connor insistingthat he needed to get groceries because apparently there was no food left in his fridge.

There’dbeen plenty of frozen pizzas, but according to the android that didn’t count.

“You need some vitamins as well. Do you knowwhat the nutritional value of these pizzas is? You might as well eat theplastic wrapping.”

He wasstill getting used to dating Connor and while so far it had been a surprisinglypleasant experience, this was one of the drawbacks. It was probably his natureas a machine, but somehow he didn’t seem to understand the concept of indulging in guiltypleasures. 

“Fuck! See, we should’ve stayed home.”

They’d juststepped outside again and the small roof overhang in front of the store was theonly thing saving them from getting completely soaked right away as the rainpoured down.

“I toldyou to bring an umbrella, but you wouldn’t listen. I have the recording, if youdon’t believe me.”

As if thesmugness in his voice wasn’t enough, Connor’s lips were curled into aself-satisfied smirk. That was an expression Gavin knew all too well by now andhe was never quite sure whether it made him want to yell at the android or kissthat stupid smirk away.

For now hejust groaned to show his annoyance.

“Whateversmartass, we should go before it gets even worse.”

As if oncue the sky lit up all of a sudden, followed by a roaring thunder. Great, so not onlywere they going to get soaked, they were also right in the middle of the storm.Fucking fantastic.

It was agood thing that Connor was far stronger than the average human being. That wayhe could carry their groceries effortlessly even while they sprinted from oneshelter to the next.

Despitetheir best efforts however both of them were completely soaked about halfway toGavin’s flat. And worse, the groceries suffered pretty badly.

Shit, soall of this had been for nothing.

Right nowthey’d stopped underneath one of the many abandoned Android parking stations.Most of them had been deconstructed after the revolution, but some had simplybeen left alone as a grim reminder of what happened only a few months ago.

Okay, sothe next dry spot Gavin could see was quite a few feet away from them. Maybethey could reach it more quickly if they-

“Gavin,could you stop for a moment?”

Surprisedby Connors intervention he turned around to him, only to see that his boyfriendhad set down the grocery bags and was staring somewhere off into the distance.His LED was blinking a consistent yellow.

“Yeahsure, but hey, your light is freaking out. Are you alright?”

It wasstill kind of weird to be so openly caring towards him. Just a fewweeks ago Gavin had been completely in denial over his feelings and if it hadn’tbeen for Connor making the first move, they might still be constantly fighting.But thankfully their bad start felt like a different life altogether by now.

Connorsimply nodded as an answer.

…and thenproceeded to leave their shelter, only to step right into the merciless rain.

“Whatthe hell are you doing, dipshit?! Do you want to short-circuit or what?!”

But Connoronly smiled, as he spread his arms and turned his face towards the sky. Just inthat moment another lightning struck somewhere far too close for comfort,illuminating his figure. Connor didn’t even flinch, looking almost delighted bythe spectacle.

It wasendearing in the most frustrating way.

When hefinally decided to turn his attention back towards Gavin, he was positivelybeaming. His LED was showing a calm blue tone now.  The wind had started to get stronger around them,so Connor had to shout at him for Gavin to understand what he was saying.

“There hasn’t been any storm ever since I’ve turned deviant. Experiencing it feelsvery different compared to before! I don’t know why, but it evokes a strong emotional reaction inme. It’s so real!”

It wasbaffling. Gavin didn’t know whether he felt annoyed or completely enamored ashe raised his voice as well.

“We’rein the middle of a thunderstorm and you wanna stop and feel the rain? I’mfreezing my ass off you fucking idiot!”

He actuallywas shivering by now, as his leather jacket provided little protection against theweather. What he wouldn’t give to be home right now; have a hot cup of coffeeand cuddle up on the couch together with Connor and one of his several cats. Or even better with all five of them.

Just in thatmoment his nose started itching. Aww shit, of course he was going to get sickover this bullshit. And then there it was, a violent sneeze. Plus another, justfor good measure.

For asecond Connors LED flashed yellow, but then it went back to blue. Thankfully hefinally came back to the shelter, looking far too relaxed for their situation.Stupid android with his ability to turn off his cold sensors.

“Iapologize; it was simply far too tempting. I didn’t mean to risk your health.”

But there it was again, that maddening smileon his face, like he was always three steps ahead of Gavin. In the time they’dbeen together he’d not once felt like he could surprise Connor the way healways surprised him.

Before heknew what was happening, Connor had stepped closer and wrapped his arms aroundhim, hugging him tightly to his chest.

Lips wereright at his ears, as he whispered, “Let me warm you up a bit before wecontinue.”

Why did theandroid have to be so irritatingly cute?

Gavin neverhad the best taste in men, so it was still kind of unbelievable that he’d foundsomeone like Connor. And worst of all, this hug did make him feel warmer andmuch more comfortable.

Giving in,he finally relaxed and wrapped his arms around Connors middle in response;sighing in defeat. Or maybe affection. It was hard to tell these days.

They mightnot have dinner for today and he’d probably get a cold because of this, but thatwasn’t so bad. Maybe Connor would let him have that pizza after all and if hedid end up getting sick, he wouldn’t mind his boyfriend taking care of him atall.

In fact,that sounded pretty good.
