Bro saw the way Will handled the boar fight and immediately had some questions about himself
Horace Altman’s character development is a wonder. How did this boy go from textbook bully jock to living proof that there is in fact hope for cis men. He used to outlet his insecurities through anger and violence. Now he’s a feminist and openly acknowledges his own shortcomings and strives to be better. Who is he. He needs to be studied.

I've mentioned this headcanon before, but Will absolutely wrote poetry. A lot of poetry. It started as a coping mechanism, he just really enjoyed putting any dark thoughts or feelings of his in a literary way that made it beautiful. After a while, though he just wrote because he loved writing, he loved the fulfillment it gave him when he turned a depressing thought or a traumatizing experience into a beautiful cadence. Sometimes he would put a melody to it and play them on the mandola for Alyss, love poems, dark poems, poems that didn't even fully make sense to him.
He also wrote several about Halt, and their relationship, although Halt never heard/saw them.
Poetry for Will was a way to put his complicated feelings into words, it was a feeling of closure to have his feelings down on paper.
After Alyss' death, he stopped writing, because he was ashamed of his feelings, and didn't even know how to put them into words, he had never had that issue before, which only served to make the sinking feeling worse.
After the Ruhl incident, and after his emotional blockage was healed, he wrote a poem. It was short, but scathing, and something that Will hoped no one ever read for the sake of his own reputation, they would think he was crazy, or murderous or both. But lets be fair, he kind of was.
He ended up burning that first poem. But he was glad he wrote it.
The rest of his poems were about Alyss. Every. Single. One. Even when he tried to write one about Maddie or about Halt or Pauline, they always drew back to Alyss, she was the denouement of every one of his stories. The resolution he couldn't not write.
Even after Will's own death, when Maddie found all his poetry, the poetry that was written on napkins, the backs of mission reports, stationary, scrap paper. Anything he could find. It was all shoved in a box under the loose wood board in the living room, momentarily forgotten.
But Maddie wouldn't let them be permanently lost to time.
She published them. Not all of them, just the ones that she felt symbolized quite clearly who Will Treaty was, and what he stood for.
Not the intimidating and hard man that some people knew him as through stories of his adventures, but as a man who suffered a great deal of immense transformation throughout his life. He was a clueless curious teenager, a cheeky and astute young man, and a melancholic, yet well-fortified ranger. He was a man who was oftentimes so overwhelmed with his feelings, that he let them spill onto physical paper to arrange them in a way that made sense.
Sometimes they didn't make sense, and Maddie speculated that those arcane poems probably wouldn't ever be interpreted in the way that Will wrote them, but that added to the reflection of who he was.
A man who never quite grew out of the 'feeling too much' stage as a boy.
A man who felt things as a child in a way no one would understand.
A man who never quite grew up.

Simple answer, Halt is built like a gorilla. Long armed ranger.
starting this rant off with the fact that i love RA. i adore Rangers Apprentice and i have since i first read it at age 8, but holy hell does Flanagan have a lot to answer for in terms of the archery.
Flanagan was in no way an archery expert, and neither am i, but i have been shooting recurve bows since i was old enough to hold them (my first time shooting was hysterical, the bow was bigger than me) and i know a bit about the differing types of bow, arrow, fletching, etc. and how different bows are designed for different people.
my first issue is that fact that Halt, who is canonically Short As Hell, uses an english long bow. this has nothing to do with strength and everything to do with the fact that the bow is bigger than him. he MIGHT be able to bring it to 3/4 draw with his arm length. i’m 5’4 and cannot possibly shoot more than 30” (apologies for the imperial, i’m north american) arrows, and long bow arrows are usually at least half a foot longer than that.
we stan one Short King but it doesn’t matter how buff you are, shooting a longbow is basically pointless if you can’t even bring it to full draw

“Did that tree just sneeze…?” some road bandit says, confused.
today i am absolutely crying with laughter over the idea of rangers with seasonal allergies.
sniffly, sneezy, miserable rangers who get sinus headaches and avoid people as much as possible so they don’t lose their “rangers are black magicians” rumours due to a poorly stopped sneeze giving them away.
terrifying rangers who lose their voices and sound like they’re chewing gravel when they demand bandits put down their weapons.
rangers who look constantly furious because their eyes are dry and blurry so they’re glaring and squinting at everything but can still somehow hit targets with their arrows.
and then it rains, and the pollen gets mostly knocked out of the air, suddenly the rangers with allergies are all back out in force, and rumours begin to not commit crimes on rainy spring nights, least the rangers somehow invariably discover you and hunt you down with supreme vengeance.

Crowley: Being gay is a constant battle between "I wish to sit on a window bench with my lover, our legs tangling as we listen to the birds" and "Hey, let's go throw rocks at fascists" and I think that's very beautiful.  Halt: If the windows open and you time it right, you can do both.

Halt is crazy strong, and it’s like only seen in the second book?! Like he tosses people in moats with one hand and stuff, but most importantly- he draws a 130lb warbow?! Like it’s the only time this bow is mentioned is in The Burning Bridge, when he’s tossing what’s his face.
“But Halt’s hands, arms, shoulders, and back were condition by years of drawing the massive longbow (should be warbow), with its pull weight of sixty kilos.”
And Halt can loose several arrows in a second, an already impressive enough feat as it is, more so with a 90lb bow, but 130lbs?! Like- he’s pulling back a pre-teen 2-3 times in such a short span of time?! He can do this without any fatigue?? Exactly how fucking strong is this man that he can draw 130lbs smoother than I do 45?! What is the most Halt could draw comfortably for hours on end?! 200lbs plus?! Joe Gibbs and Mark Stretton can barely draw that more than a dozen times?! And they’re like the big people in the heavy bow world.
