Rats love burrowing actually! I provide basins with at least 2-3 feet of depth and fill them up with shredded paper, they build intricate nests and tunnels out of them. Climbing is important, but so is burrowing! Rats are very intelligent, curious animals, they need lots of different types of stimulation in their environment. I would definitely recommend, if you can't modify any cage with height to have a basin at the bottom, adding a tub/concrete pan to the floor of their cage and filling it with stuff
Do rats need bedding to burrow like mice and hamsters do? I tried to look it up but all I could find was about wild rats burrowing, nothing about pet rats.
Rats don't need burrow bedding! It's more important to give them plenty of things to climb on

I was just rewatching, you might find it funny - the silver Merle doe that keeps jumping in front of ganymede to check out my phone is Nimbus!
@cypric-rat-hyperfixation
😳 I got the memo, we paparazzi'd Ganymede, and here's the exclusive footage for you!
I apologize for leaving y'all out on the rats of the day, with my medical issues and moving for my partners career change, its hard to keep up with the extra things - like taking photos and posting them - but I love that other people love my rats as much as I do and it makes me happy to share them with you, because they are all superstars to me 🥰
They have been living in seperate gendered colonies for some time now, Ganymede, Dawn, and Biscuits children are adults now, I ended up holding back almost all of them, however the rest were sold as breeding stock - everyone turned out quite good looking, I will try to remember to post photos of them asap. I'm hoping within the next month or so everyone will have finally settled into the new routine and we can set up breeding groups again - and hopefully I can try and remember to post here!!
Thank yall so much for appreciating us! <3

Then we have the twins- marimo and shark - almost identical but not quite!
I MUST go to bed now! There are a good few girls as well, but I'll leave it as a cliff hanger for now!

I have personally seen my rats dreaming just like dogs and cats! Levi was lying on his back yesterday in his favorite tunnel and I could see his whiskers and nose twitching, then his little paws were twitching. I think he was dreaming about eating a snack.
Science side of tumblr:
Do animals dream? What animals dream? And how do we know they're dreaming? Have we had little monitors on them to see if they enter REM states?
I think I remember hearing that dogs and cats dream, but that's as far as my info goes.
I guess we can't know what kind of stuff they're dreaming about, but I'd love to hear if anyone has presented theories on that. Like, is there legit research going on looking into animal dreams?

For my rats, it usually takes about 6 months- a year for them to be completely comfortable with handling [the goes limp when you pick it up type]
It all depends on temperament, I'd say allowing them to crawl on your head and shoulders as well as just on top of your hands while inside their enclosure can be helpful to make them understand hands are good
Honeysuckle seems pretty ok with being held, and rather just doesn’t like being picked up, but willingly (and excitedly) going into my sweater!

Weird thing happened today, I do rat hospice care from time to time where I pick up older rats who unfortunately can't stay with their owners for the rest of their life, or people with single elderly/special needs elderly rats and sometimes you just have these really weird scenarios. I pick up what is supposed to be a 3 year old female, and a pair of 2 year old females all cohabing. Yadyadyadyad they can't keep the girls so I go to pick them up. The people seemed like they cared about them, they had toys and stuff in a box for me to take with them, but here's the kicker.
These are not 3 female rats ?
The "3 year old female" is a male rat with like huge tumors all over the left side of his body, he seems sluggish like it affects his mobility, theyre on the underside and I didn't mess with them too much, I know moving is stressful. But I still noticed right away she (or HE) was walking strange, I thought it might be due to 'advanced age' however I've just gotten home and omg this poor boy, I can't believe they didn't know? I mean, maybe they didn't know he was a boy, but how can you not tell that those giant lumps shouldn't be there? Anyway sorry about the rant its just so bizarre and I don't want to ask about it /: cus it's like what is the point I don't even know

I only give the mothers the orchard grass because it is the lowest dust, also that's why I recommend using hay from time to time IN ADDITION to their normal bedding as enrichment rather than as their sole bedding.
Rats can't digest grass
Rats can't eat Timothy hay or alfalfa hay. They can't digest dried grasses like rabbits and guinea pigs.
They will get intestinal blockages and die. If you have rats, ESPECIALLY BOYS, please be reading the ingredients of what you're feeding them from the pet store. Because so many US pet brands will label their product as suitable for rats and mice WHEN THEY ARE NOT!!!!! KAYTEE AND OXBOW ARE REALLY GUILTY OF THIS!!!
Its frustrating because today I literally saw a "small animal multivitamin" and I was looking at them because I thought to myself, crushing up a few multivitamin tablets and sprinking them throughout their food ought to be good, but no, the MAIN 2 INGREDIENTS (as is typically the case for most small animal treats listed as safe for rats and mice when they are NOT) were Timothy and alfalfa, and its like omfg u try to give ur rat a supplement and u literally are going to kill it??? Why oxbow why?
Its dumb, and it makes me pissed.
Sorry, I know that was a rant, I just worry because I think about all the people that aren't checking the ingredients or know that it's dangerous (which is completely fair if it says its safe for rats how are you supposed to know?) So please be safe and keep your rats safe too! Please please check the ingredients of food and treats to make sure its safe for them, Google and double check if you need to. It's honestly best to just avoid K*ytee and oxbow all together if you can.
Shout out to whoever makes those cute baked crunch treats like tiny friends farm is their name, when they say they're safe for rats, they actually are, thank yall!!
Tl;Dr please read ingredients before feeding anything to your rats, and honestly never buy from K*ytee again, if you can help it! Thanks 💖🐀

ACTUALLY!!!! Rats are super smart! They're MOSTLY pretty good at knowing what they should and shouldn't eat and if you put Timothy hay/grass in their cage as bedding, they will TOTALLY use it as bedding!!! My rats personally love the Orchard Grass because it's really soft, I also like to give them the barley oat hay because they actually CAN eat the OATS off of the stalks of the barley!! And they know the grass is bedding, I would watch excessive chewers with crunching grass though, although I doubt they would intentionally eat it.
The reason the treats etc. Is so dangerous is because the alfalfa and hay that they can't digest is ground into a meal and mixed with tons of yummy stuff the rat DOES want to eat like veggies, fruits, and USUALLY THE BIGGEST PROBLEM: MOLLASSES AND/OR HONEY
Basically, your rats are super smart and if you give them grass or hay as bedding, they're going to know it's bedding and won't try to eat it, but when it's ground up and mixed with sugar, they don't realize they're eating something they can't digest and then that's when they can die from it. Even if a rat takes to chewing on grass, they won't be intentionally swallowing large quantities of the indigestible material like they would over time with baked treats containing it.
TL;DR As long as you're not covering the grass in honey, it makes for lots of enriching possibilities to add to their nest and is A+ Great extra bedding.
P.s. my nursing mothers PARTICURALY love the sweet orchard grass, it's super soft and they LOVE building little circular nests out of it for their babies.

I used to have trouble sleeping at night, any light or noise would wake me up with a start. Ever since I've kept my rats, I am a very heavy sleeper. My husband says the wheel and the noisy midnight drinkers bother him but I sleep right through it every night.
I’ve hear about how having cats makes you immune to hauntings, ghosts, spooky midnight noises etc but. for years I’ve been dealing with a panic response to unexpected nighttime noises, major enough that the adrenaline can keep me from falling back asleep for hours.
A few weeks of living with a cat and my brain’s been reprogrammed. last night at 4am the furry little shitmuppet broke a vase & I only woke up long enough to call her a rat bastard & roll over back to sleep
