Portal and Greek Mythology: Theories and Possible References

 After looking at of some of the theories going around about how many of the characters and events from the Portal games may actually be references/parallels to those in Greek mythology, I thought I would do a bit of my own investigating and see what I could find.  While Valve has never officially confirmed any of these references/parallels, I did find enough of them to be thoroughly mind blown by the idea anyway.  If nothing else, it makes for a really fun theory!

@roxxiespirt made me draw a persona for MCD. So here she is!

Her name is Ariya and she's a meif'wa raised by witches, hence her staff and familiar! During s1, she runs her own shop selling a menagerie of breads, jams, jellies, flowers, fruits, vegetables and more from her own gardens and bakery! After Aphmau and the main cast disappeared for 15 years, Ariya was one of the few people who stayed in Phoenix Drop, deciding to master her magics in order to better protect Phoenix Drop. She wears parts of Garroth's old armor and his old cape to keep the memory of her crush friend alive. She doesn't do a lot of gardening or baking anymore with a village to protect and restore.

Diaries!Garroth hates looking into mirrors because all he sees is his father. And he fears being like his father. The idea of ending up like that tyrant terrifies him. And even if he looks different from his father when it comes to some facial features and such. When Garroth looks into the mirror, all he sees is his father.

Mystreet!Garroth hates looking into mirrors after Starlight because he looks ever so slightly off. This is because he's a werewolf now, and his bonestructure had been altered. Which is now associated with the possession and all the season 6 trauma, too.

He ends up having facial dysmorphia in both universes.

I feel like the fact that Donna acted as a mother figure to Aphmau isn't talked about enough. This random girl showed up to the village she lived in, and this woman, who at the time considered herself to be all alone with no family sje claimed, took in this girl and treated her as her own daughter.

There is something about that to me that is so soft it hurts my soul, the idea that Aphmau, the reincarnation of Irene the MATRON, found a mother figure in some 'random' famer woman from a run down little town.

And Donna is not perfect by any means, and she doesn't need to be, hell she probably doesn't want to be. Aphmau could have chosen any of the older women in Phoenix Drop, but out of all of them was Donna, a rough woman who wanted nothing but a husband who looked good and would take care of her. She chose to look after Aphmau, to be a mother figure for this lost girl.

Maybe, in a way Donna saw a bit of herself in Aphmau. A girl lost with no mom, just trying to find her way in the world, and Donna wanted to be to Aphmau what she never had; a loving and caring mother.

Donna has always been one of my favorite characters, and she always will be. In her 'vainess' lies a deep love for her fellow citizens of Phoenix Drop, and I feel she gets over looked so often. I still like to believe that no matter what, even after those 15 years she still saw Aphmau as her first born. Even if she was never truly Aphmau's mom, and never could be in the most base sense, she still saw her, the next Lady Irene, as her little girl to protect. Maybe the fact that Aphmau never aged those 15 years nailed it in for her, that Aphmau was still her little girl, even if she never saw those young child years.

Maybe I'm being too sappy, but Donna's relationship with Aphmau makes me emotional. I adore seeing caring, loving mothers in fiction, and Donna feels like Aphmau was her world for so long, and she adore that girl like she was her own.

I love Sylvana, but it was a missed oppertunity to make Donna and Logan Aphmau's adoptive parents or something.

So I made a shitpost a bit ago about Gene and Dante just straight up not having a last name. But then I got to thinking. What if they did? Key word: Did

Imagine: Gene and Dante grow up with the last name of Dillion, meaning loyal or loyalty. I picked a name that meant loyal because loyalty is one of the few things the brothers have in common, Gene’s loyalty to Shad and Dante’s loyalty to Aphmau.

Anyway.. So Gene never tampered with Dante’s mind, and in their village, he was basically the only one. But after making the entire village forget Dante, including their parents, he made Dante forget their name. Just another way to remove Dante’s existence without actually offing him. Not only did he make Dante forget, but he made sure Dante knew he forgot. Meaning he’ll have to wonder for the rest of his life.

Gene himself disowned the name, completely detaching it from himself. To simply become Gene.

I MADE A MAP OF TU'LA

This is entirely based off of my own headcannons with essentially no knowledge

These maps are what Tu'la looked like before the King of Toraichi took over

Biomes Maps - Green = Different temperature Jungles. Browns = Deserts and Savanna White = Ice

States. Red = The Kingdom of Toraichi, Yellow = Desert (Mostly uninhabited with nomadic tribes), Stripes = Main Menphia Tribes. They were found all over the desert but their main areas are the stripe

A mix of both in a different forms

What are y'all's opinions on Aphmau's black markings that she has in rebirth? And what's your opinion on her being able to use powers before she gets the relic in the Irene dimension?

I've been feeling conflicted about it. And I'm leaning towards not including it in my rewrite. I mean, wasn't a big point of season 2 Aphmau discovering these new powers she gets from the relic? If she already has powers in rebirth, how? Would getting the relic matter or change things in that case?

In terms of design, I do really like the black markings. I mean, they're pretty and I love the idea of them glowing white. But I feel like it would make her stand out too much. We're working off the idea that she's a reborn Irene, so wouldn't that mean Irene had the same markings? And if she didn't, why would Aph have them?

Ahhhh, what I would give to pick Jess' mind and figure out what she was planning for rebirth!!!!

Anyways, I feel like the markings and powers would make her stand out, and at least ONE person would make the guess that she's connected to Irene.

Also, also, it rubs me the wrong way that in rebirth she helps the village and gets her position through uncontrolled powers and circumstances. In the original, she worked her ass off to fix that village and make it better. And if you remember, she never officially took the title of lord while doing that, people just saw her helping their village and taking a leader-like role and decided to start calling her lord.

Idk, maybe it's because I grew up in rural Appalachia and I really value hard work and dedication, but I like the original better than rebirth for those reasons.

Aphmau earning her title of lord through hard work instead of having it thrown at her feels much better to me. Plus, I really like the idea of her being a jack of all trades. She may be on the smaller side, but she's strong and a quick learner. She knows carpentry, combat, farming, etc. She may not be the best, but she's doing more than anyone else ever has.

Also, what if after absorbing the relic, she gains those markings as an after effect? That would be cool, the relic physically changing her in that way. Plus, it opens the door to the other relics physically changing their holders in some way. Like giving them specific characteristics or whatnot.

How does everyone else feel about this?
