Here’s an update on my drawing of “Kyley” 9 x 12 graphite pencil on Bristol Smooth paper. Original reference photo and drawing done by @katezambrano This is my interpretation of Kate’s original drawing. She is a huge inspiration to me and when I watched her demonstration drawing Kyley, I just had to take a shot at the drawing. Check out Kate’s amazing awe inspiring work at @katezambrano I finally finished Kyley’s face, I may still balance out the tones a bit more on her forehead, but I want to start adding and building depth and body to her hair. My focus in this piece is light, shadow, and emotion. I want to create a dramatic piece that the viewer can feel. I’m not sure if I’m succeeding but we’ll see how this turns out the end. I’m using @pentelofamerica GraphGear 1000 mechanical pencils with 4H, 2H, H, HB, B, 2B, and 4B leads. I built up my tones by layering my graphite making tiny overlapping circular motions with my pencil. I fully exhaust the tone before moving to the next grade of lead, I feel I create a more natural contrast. No blending tools are being used, I’m just layering my graphite to get smooth blend. For the highlights on her face, I use a combination of a kneaded eraser and my mono zero eraser which I cut the tip at angle to get a nice sharp edge. More to come soon!! #drawing #graphitepencil #portraiture #pentelofamerica #pentel #strathmore #realism #salemartsassociation #readingartassociation #artsreading #artistsofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CotXqVeOBnU/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Reference photo and original drawing done by @katezambrano This is my interpretation of Kate’s original drawing. I finally was able to draw tonight; after not being able to for a few months, even if it was just for a few moments. I was able to finish Kyley’s face, next I will work on adding and building depth and body to her hair. Here is an update on my drawing of “Kyley” 9 x 12 graphite pencil on Bristol Smooth paper. Starting to build up her hair, one strand at a time. I have the light and darks of her face done. I made some adjustments to the tones, especially in her eyes. My goal and focus for this drawing is emotion, mystery, and drama. This is based on the original drawing and reference photo by artist @katezambrano. She drew this live as a demonstration for her Patreon which just inspired me. She is an amazing masterful artist. I am drawing this just for practice, I am nowhere near the level of Kate, she’s a Master in my humble opinion. To view Kate’s amazing art, visit her page, she also has a Patreon Art Club with monthly Art Prompts and is filled with tons of cool and amazing content and loads of inspiration. Now that I have the face pretty much finished, I can start to add her hair, which I’m hoping will bring this together. I’m still not using any blending tools, just layering my graphite by making tiny overlapping circular motions with my pencil. I then used my Mono Zero eraser, which I cut the tip at an angle to get a fine chiseled edge, and “drew” in highlights in the skin. I then went back with a 4H lead and softened the highlights a bit. I’m trying to make this an emotional dramatic piece. https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl54w61uJqG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Here is another update on my drawing of “Kyley” 9 x 12 graphite pencil on Bristol Smooth paper. Now that the shadow is pretty much done, I can start to layer lighter tones on the other half of her face using a 4H lead. I’m getting a smooth blend my making tiny overlapping circular motions with my pencil. The highlights on her face were created using a Mono Zero eraser which I cut at an angle to get a real sharp point. More to come soon!!! https://www.instagram.com/p/ClAUeFaOd4F/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Here is an updated work in progress image of my drawing of Kyley” 9 x 12 graphite pencil on Bristol Smooth paper My process is extremely slow, this is about 80 hours worth of work. I layer my graphite by making tiny overlapping circular motions with my pencils. I start with a 4H lead and gradually build up to my darkest value which is 4B. Most of the shadow on the face only went up to 2B. I’m using Pentel GraphGear mechanical pencils with 0.5mm leads. I get a deep dark by sanding down the tip of my lead even further to a needle point to really get into the grain of the paper. Over the years, I learned to apply just enough pressure to not break the lead, layering helps me in this area so the lead hardly ever breaks. Now that most of the shadow is done, I can now work on the lighter tones on her face. More to come soon! https://www.instagram.com/p/Ck7KSu7u-k3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Here is a small update on “Lost” 9 x 12 graphite pencil on Bristol Smooth paper. I’m using @pentelofamerica Graphgear 1000 mechanical pencils with 4H, 2H, H, HB, B, 2B, and 4B leads. No blending tools are being used. I’m layering my graphite, much like colored pencils by making tiny overlapping circular motions and by varying my hand pressure. I’m starting to work on the drips and drops of water on her face. Observing how the light hits the water and how the shadows play giving form. This will start to make sense (I hope) as I continue on. Being a sufferer of mental illness, I wanted to create a portrait that focuses on the inner pain and struggles, which I know all too well. My newest portrait is titled “Lost” 9 x 12 graphite pencil on Bristol Smooth paper. This is a work in progress, like myself - after having been hospitalized due to a CPTSD flare up, I am taking baby steps along my journey of healing. Like my work in progress on my drawing, more to come soon! https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj_d3sDpylp/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“Boston Light” 9 x 12 graphite pencil on Bristol Smooth paper this is extremely rare, my first ever lighthouse drawing I did for Reading Art Association’s Fall Exhibit which was raffled off to raise money for the organization. I’m proud to say that it did well and it was nice to see it go to a nice home. https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci_rIviO4sW/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“Nubble Light” 9 x 12 graphite pencil on Bristol Smooth paper (wip) Here is a drawing I’ve been working on, yes I don’t always draw portraits, I also do landscapes. This is a drawing that I’ve been wanting to draw for a long time. The sky was clear blue, not a cloud. I love dramatic works of art so I’m adding storm clouds. The next image is with a quarter and a penny to show just how small the details are. More to come soon!! https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci6twsdNKS5/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“Enzo and Lorena” 11 x 14 graphite pencil on Fredrix Canvas Paper This was a drawing I did of an old friend and her husband for their 50th wedding anniversary. This was also an experimental drawing, many first in this piece…first time drawing glass, first time drawing a flower, first time drawing realistic hands…first time drawing on textured paper. This is one of my favorite drawings. https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci6rvYgte5z/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“Philip Glass” 11 x 14 graphite pencil on Bristol Smooth paper. This is an older drawing I realized I never posted before. At the time, I wasn’t happy with it, I’m still not sure how I feel about it. I’m posting it anyway because it’s an older drawing that is a part of my journey along my path to healing. I’m trying to cope and deal with mental illness, which is a fight every day. Each line I make, every mark, I battle my inner demons that continue to haunt me from a tragic childhood. As I spend hours upon hours drawing, trying to keep my brain focused and grounded, defying the voices in my head telling me nasty things, each piece of my art; whether good or bad, is a victory and a step forward along my own personal journey. #portraiture #pencildrawing #pentelgraphgear1000 #graphite #drawing #healing #cptsd #childhoodtrauma #survivor #staygrounded #mentalillness #metoo https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci6hfJuu0Ue/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
