Neteyam x fem!Omaticaya!reader
Tumblr media
Blurb: Neteyam is aged up, maybe 20-22, reader the same age. Neteyam and the reader have always been close, with an unspoken relationship and expectation that they will be mates when the time comes. When it does, however, things don't quite go as planned.
Warnings: Angst lol
At first, you paid no mind. It’s not that it didn’t matter to you, but you were secure in yourself and who you knew you were to Neteyam to be bothered by the rushed questions, the eager “Has he asked you yet?”s and the “How will he do it?”s. You only smiled coyly and shrugged, and if they pushed, you merely said you had work to do. As your people’s youngest, most prominent healer (aside from Tsahik Mo’at) during wartime, there truly always were wounds to be tended to and medicinal herbs to be prepared.
You considered what you and the soon to be Olo’eyktan of the Omaticaya had to be sacred. It was unspoken, heavy, tangible, but also easy, grounding and reliable, which is what made it all the more significant for the two of you. Speaking it into existence, especially to those outside the bubble the pair of you had fortified over your entire lives, almost felt to cheapen the entire thing. You knew. He knew. There was not a single doubt. Until there was.
Soon, the questions took a crueler turn; in fact, they didn’t even stay direct questions, but became rumored whispers. “If he has not asked her yet, then he must seek someone else. Who has he chosen?” And honest to Eywa, the first few times this got around to you, you only chuckled. People would talk. It was only natural. They were anxious to see what their future clan leader would do, and you knew it had nothing to do with you, or what lay in the future for you and Neteyam. You had no doubt he would ask soon, after all, his own mother had instructed him to make his bow from the wood of the fallen hometree and choose a woman many eclipses ago. Until you did.
It didn’t happen overnight. But you didn’t notice until one night. When the oldest Sully boy came back from a hunt, he only ever came to your healing tent or to Tsahik Mo’ats. This night, however, for the first time in you couldn’t remember how long, he entered the tent of a healer you could not even recall the name of. And all of a sudden, you realized you hadn’t put those beads in his hair, and they didn’t look like the ones the Neytiri would make either. You couldn’t remember the last time he had asked you to ride your ikrans to the one mountain the two of you frequented. Come to think of it, he hadn’t spoken to you since he had made his bow.
He wasn’t yours.
“What is it, my girl?” It wasn’t until Neytiri put a hand on your shoulder that you realized hot tears had made tracks across your humiliated face. As much as she represented a maternal figure to you and many other in your tribe, you couldn’t bear to speak your realization to the mother of your problem. Eyes glazed, you try to will them away and muttered some excuse of a tear inducing herb irritating your eyes and turned, making your way back into your tent.
Anger.
The next few days, your sorrow quickly turned into anger. How could things change for him just like that? And even if they did? Not a single word to you? That was the first time you regretted never putting a label on things between the two of you, even if it reduced the intimacy of what you had into a teenage relationship, at least he would have the responsibility of owing you an explanation before basically writing you out of his life. Even without all that, you couldn’t fathom the thought that he would simply not consider you worthy of a measly explanation. Clearly you did not know him as the person he actually was.
And that’s what broke your heart further. The final wound—that the Neteyam you knew and was oh so, inexplicably dear to you…wasn’t true, didn’t exist, must have been a fantasy.
Your friends worried. You were withdrawn, quietly and consistently turning over the events of your lives and figuring out when you had wrongly created this dream of the two of you making a life together, and when he decided to stop entertaining it. You always came up with nothing. For the life of you, you could not taint the memories you had made. Even if they really were rose-colored glasses, you couldn’t bring yourself to see him any other way.
You ached all the time. Mentally, even physically. You slept way later into the morning, but also had trouble falling asleep to begin with. It almost felt like along with your heart, every joint in your body broke, and you didn’t know if it would ever get better, despite your best friends constant insistence that this too would pass.
One day, Tsahik Mo’at instructed you to venture further than usual for certain herbs to keep from depleting the supply in your area. Woven satchel in hand, you made your way out, grateful for the alone time in a new area to stimulate your mind to keep from your constant straying thoughts.
You found a clove of what you were looking for, collecting them as you walked, not even looking up past the soil you walked on anymore you were so focused.
“You’re not supposed to come this far.”
You nearly shrieked, almost jumping out of your skin. You turned to see the very object of all of the thoughts you had been avoiding stood leaning against some sort of man-made bunker overgrown with greenery. Neteyam had spoken of this. Of the place that had sheltered his father’s human body while his Avatar roamed free. You knew it’s significance and you knew he had no business here either. “Neither are you, last time I checked,” you narrowed your eyes, your guard up.
Neteyam chuckled, brushing it off. There was a moment of silence where you both just took each other in. You had avoided him with such determination that you had almost forgot what he looked like and the effect it had on you.
“Spirits, you are still perfect,” he said, breathless, but still audible to you.
You scoffed, “What makes you think you can say that?” Your hands shook and your body vibrated with fury and defensiveness.
Neteyam’s eyebrows furrowed and he straightened, walking towards you.
You immediately put a hand out, “No, don’t come any closer.” And because you just couldn’t help it, you spat out, “You can’t just come and go as you please, even if you are the future eyktan.”
He paused, searching for something in your eyes, and gradually came to some sort of realization. “You think I wanted this?”
“Didn’t you?” you challenged.
“No,” he shook his head, coming closer again, grabbing onto your outstretched hand with both of his and stepping into it, head bowed so that your hand made contact with his bare chest, his eyes on you, your own eyes looking at your entwined hands. “I did not want this.” When you refused to look at him, still, you watched as he descended to his knees, you still barely taller than him.
You met his eyes; you saw them filled with emotion. “If you asked what I truly want, y/n, it is an entire lifetime with you. You must know this.”
Your breath came faster, confusion clouding your vision. “What are you saying?”
“You are what I most desire, y/n. Only you.”
Your entire body relaxed, and you sunk to the forest floor, knees together. You whimpered, “Then why, ‘Teyam?”
Neteyam nearly purred at the nickname, bringing his hand up to stroke your cheek with his thumb, “Because I also have a duty to fulfill. And you would be the mightiest Tsahik the people would ever see, know that I truly believe that.”
You exhaled, your palms instinctively reaching for his chest, right over his racing heart. The feel and familiar rhythm grounding you like nothing else.
“But I am also selfish. And I know what the pain and danger that mating with me brings. Not only would you be a target because of your status as Tsahik, but also because of my father. Our family will never escape the danger of the Skypeople, and I refuse to put you in that position. If…If something happened to you, y/n, Eywa, I have imagined it a thousand times over…” unashamed, a tear fell down his face. “It would end me, my love. I cannot know that loss..I cannot, I cannot,” he looked down, whispering it over and over again.
Your chest ached at seeing him so torn, but you knew you had to stand your ground. He had to realize the effect this had on you. You held his face in your hands, quieting him. “Ma Neteyam, I have felt this loss a thousand times worse,” he immediately flinched, looking up at your sorrowful face.
“I had believed all my life that Eywa made you for me and I for you,” at that he offered a small smile. “And when the time came, you rejected me. Whether your intentions were pure or not, for many eclipses now, I have lived in a world where the very person I was born for did not want me. And that loss, you must understand, is far worse than Eywa taking us away from each other, because there is no reason to be woven into it. It is only loss.”
Neteyam took in your words, hands on your knees. Ashamed, he turned away, “I have hurt you so much,” he closed his eyes, dipping his forehead to your shoulder, whispering, “Can you ever forgive me, beloved?”
His pet names were slowly coaxing the old you from the empty, defensive shell you had become, this last one nearly melting you into his arms.
You kissed your teeth, resigning. This was not your war. You wanted this, and you would not punish him more than he deserved. You inched closer, giving him time to lean back as you straddled him, his hands immediately going to your hips, that beautiful face looking at you in confusion and utter nervousness, as if you held the weight of his life in your next words.
You tilted forwards, your lips slanting over his. “I see you, Neteyam. It is already forgotten.”
His breath hitched, but you didn’t give him a chance to respond, because you moved your lips against his. Your first kiss. Not at all how you expected, tasting of the salt of your combined tears, but still as perfect and unreal as you dreamed. His eyes fluttered closed as he moved a hand to your jaw, guiding you into a deeper kiss. You grew hungrier, your toes curling at the sensation. All you could process was the feel of his fingers digging into your waist, holding you as if he was afraid to let go, every inch of your front pressed against his so that you felt his heartbeat through all of your skin. You hoped he felt yours, too.
He stopped you for a second, you chasing his retreating mouth, drawing a grin from him as he licked his swollen lips, both of you panting. He just looked at you, head cocked, smile soft.
“What?” you asked, nuzzling his nose. “Nothing,” he shook his head. “Everything.” His smile fell as his gaze became serious, with an intensity you had never seen before. He held your jaw, gentle but rigid, “I see you, Ma y/n.”
You couldn’t have predicted the effect those words would have on you. They fell off his tongue with such ease, but you quite literally purred. Your arms encircled his neck and you simply embraced him, cherishing the feel of your skin on his and letting the warmth flow between you. “I pray to Eywa I will always feel as content as I do right now.” You leaned back to meet his eyes, “I cannot wait for the day we make it official, ‘Teyam.”
His eyes darkened with desire, “Neither can I, my love.”

back with another entry for @fairydxll‘s 2k writing event! i had so much fun writing for my matt x reader, now it’s something for bucky :) just like last time, i’ve got 2 prompts: “what i have with you, i don’t want with anyone else” + “i didn’t know where else to go”
context: ~ i am still a hoe for avenger! reader so we’re back with that heheh. same as last time, your powers are basically wanda’s powers, plus presence concealment which is just a fancy way of saying invisibility. this mostly focuses on your relationship with bucky though, so it’s not touched on tooo much but it will be referenced. italics = flashbacks. also i had to sneak in a cute lil moment from andrew garfield’s spider-man hehe, obviously re-worked to be bucky x you. also i fucked up and mixed up some of the howling commando’s members so just pretend that everyone i mentioned worked closely with bucky.
word count: 13.8k (hahaha i am so sorry if you hate long one-shots. i really tried to cut down after my matt x reader piece that was over 10k but… we see how well that worked out)

If Bucky could to describe you using one word, he’d have a hard time deciding. Without a doubt, you are the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. But you’re also the smartest. And you’re kind. Loving. Gentle. If he had to choose just one though… it would be home. It doesn’t matter where in the world you are, whether it’s the United States, somewhere in Romania, if he has you there, he’ll be okay. You, are home. You could be on the other side of the room, and just one glance at you fills him with a sense of comfort, and peace. Things he never thought possible. One night as he’s laying next to you, and you’re sound asleep, he thinks about the long journey it took to get to where you are right now. Lots of ups and downs (more downs, if you’re both being honest), but life is… good. He’s hesitant to even think it, because for decade after decade, all he knew was pain and suffering. But with you, he’s happy. He’s content, and safe. If only things could stay this way.

Tumblr media
For yet another night, Y/N found her blinking up at the cloth of her canopy that draped over the top of her bed. All that was on her mind was the same thing that she thought of since the Cameron’s party a week ago - JJ Maybank. The blonde flirt seemed to infiltrate every crevice of her mind, body and soul; totally consuming her in just one night. She couldn’t help but wonder if he knew she had fallen madly in love with him. If he knew her entire night was bathed in twinking and sparkling fairy dust because of him. If he knew that she was up every night wishing that she also weighed heavy on his mind - keeping him awake.
No matter how many questions and thoughts she pondered, there were always two that stumped her - making her continuously circle back to them day-in and day-out. These were the questions that kept her up. Sure, she found herself contemplating if she even crossed JJ’s mind after that night, but these questions were the biggest of all. The ones that made her stomach churn and her brain want to bury itself into the world's biggest and darkest hole out of embarrassment and foolishness. Who does he love? Does he have someone else? She couldn’t help but imagine that he was lying in a bed not far from Y/N, his arms holding someone else close just like he held her that night. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time Y/N found herself in that situation before. She just hoped JJ wasn’t just another taken boy flirting with her out of boredom and that he didn’t already have someone waiting on him to get home.
With a frustrated groan that sounded a bit more like a scream, Y/N flopped over aggressively, now laying on her side as she stared at the wall darkened by shadows. She felt so foolish thinking that JJ would ever make an appearance in her life again. What was she thinking? Her life wasn’t a movie or a book. Things like that never happen to her. She was destined for a life of perpetual sadness and loneliness - to be alone forever. Her self-pity didn’t last long until JJ had crept back into her mind, making her think of him instead of her doomed fate. His name echoed in her head, something she believed would happen forever until they are reunited once again. Almost like he was in the room, she could see him appear, standing by the wall she faced.
A knock on her door sounding through the deadly silent house startled her. Sitting up in her bed, she paused for a moment. It was almost midnight on a night her parents were out of town, nobody should be knocking on her door. Throwing her blankets off herself, she slid out of bed, pulling on a random sweater draped over the chair in her room. The house was dark and empty, making a fearful chill roll up her spine. The air-conditioner chilled the hardwood floors to feel like ice beneath her bare feet as she carried herself along the banister overlooking the grand living room.
She found herself stilling halfway down the spiral staircase, freezing at a thought. “What if it’s JJ?” She thought, her hand tightening around the oak banister. Hope blooming in her chest, she finally felt something other than dread and despair for the first time since the morning after the party. Rushing down the rest of the staircase, she stopped as the grand, solid oak doors loomed over her - blocking her from either a blissful dream or a doomed fate. Eying the peephole, she almost didn’t want to look through in case it wasn’t JJ. She wanted to believe he stood on the other side of the door, ready to pronounce his love for her, but she knew how unlikely it was. With her nails flying between her teeth, she chewed upon the nicely done manicure, not even realizing she was doing it as she paced.
If she didn’t open it and it was JJ, he would think she didn’t like him like she did, but if she opened it and it wasn’t JJ, she would be forever disappointed - spiralling into a bigger pit of anguish than she already was in. Taking a heaving breath in, she expelled the air out in a huge gust, turning to the door again. Letting her hand fall from her mouth, she stood there. She hoped with every fibre of her being that her and JJ’s story will continue and that night last week was not the end of everything. Her hand grasped the cold metal of the fancy door handle, the cold-shooting through her like an electric shock, making goosebumps rise all over her body, her skin uncomfortably tight. Ignoring it, she yanked the door open, letting the silver moonlight pour in like a flood. It was as if a huge stamp landed upon the world with the ink spelling out the words “the end” oozing into everything around her as it stamped her fate, marking the end of her fairytale night.
“Oh, hey Sarah and Kiara,” She greeted, disappointed to find the two girls instead of the boy she so desperately craved to see again. Her hand slid down off the handle in disappointment as she stepped aside, letting the two girls in. Softly closing the door with a click, she twisted the lock, bathing them in almost complete darkness, the light from the windows just barely missing them. “What are you guys doing here so late and in your pyjamas?” She asked, crossing her arms over her chest, trying to protect her body from the blasting cold of the air-conditioning.
“We were having an impromptu sleepover and I know that Rose and Ward are off on that realtor retreat so I assumed your parents went too,” Sarah started to explain, peeling off the light sweater she had thrown on over her tank top. The nights now fell with the slightest bit of an autumn chill, marking the start of the end of summer. “So, we thought you could use some company!” She concluded, hanging her sweater on the coat rack by the door as Kiara worked on her jean jacket.
Y/N nodded, rolling her lips as she leaned against the door. She couldn’t help but feel majorly disappointed. It didn’t matter if she was glad that Sarah and Kiara were actually trying to maintain the friendship developed that night. She was glad to have two new friends (the only friends she has made so far), but she had built this image up in her head and she found herself not being able to cope with the crushing realization that she did not live in a fairytale. “I hope you don’t mind, Y/N.” Kiara spoke up, noting Y/N’s gloom-covered face and silence.
Looking up at the two girls who hovered by the coat rack, she was shocked and slightly embarrassed they had picked up on her pity party. “No, I don’t mind at all,” She clarified. “I just have something weighing on my mind, that’s all.” She shrugged, gesturing her pointer finger to her head as she lifted herself off the door.
“Oh, well, maybe we could talk about it! We could help you with whatever it is!” Sarah suggested eagerly, clapping her hands, the sound echoing throughout the darkened house. Y/N gulped, her eyes widening as she panicked - hoping the two girls didn’t notice it.
“We don’t have to do that,” Y/N waved her off in what she hoped was a nonchalant way. “I don’t want to worry you guys with what happens in my mind. It’s way too much for anyone to deal with.” She internally cringed, not wanting them to think she was crazy. Pulling a face, she took a second to question why she was the way she was.
“It’s no problem, we all have our fair share of issues to deal with.” Kiara reassured her as Y/N brushed past them, leading them up the stairs.
“I just don’t want you guys to worry about something I can figure out on my own,” She tried again, cursing the universe. All she wanted was for them not to figure out she was secretly pining for their friend for a week, completely obsessing over him as she imagined him as her prince or troubled bad boy with amazing dance skills (or wealthy gentry who professes his love in the pouring rain). “Besides, this is a sleepover and they are supposed to be fun.” She pressed.
She didn’t want to tell them how she imagined JJ striding across a vast field in a blouse and breeches, his open travelling cloak billowing in the breeze behind him as his blue eyes set on her frame and only her frame - determined to reach her. She would be absolutely mortified if they went back to JJ, telling him about how in love she was with him only to ask who they were talking about. She had to come to terms with the fact that JJ just didn’t remember her. He didn’t see her as his Elizabeth Bennet. She was just another stranger on the sidewalk to him, not the person he had full conversations with across the room with just his eyes. “Well, if you’re one-hundred percent sure.”
“I am, Kiara,” She confirmed as they reached her door that stood slightly ajar. “It’s nothing you guys should worry about. It’s not even that big of a deal,” She lied, tears stinging her eyes as the hammer fell on her delicate heart - effectively shattering it finally. “I was just wrapped up in my head about my silly little romance novels and fairytales.” She added in, trying to remind herself of the fact that those things were just that: silly. She wasn’t going to meet someone under the glow of the artificial light surrounding them and fall in love - well, she could, but the person sure as hell wouldn’t fall in love with her, that much was just proven.
“Call me Kie.” Kiara corrected the girl, sensing a change in subject was in order as she shared a look with Sarah. Y/N figured she hadn’t done a good enough job hiding what had made her so upset, but as long as she hadn’t actually told them point-blank, it was all conjecture and they couldn’t take it to JJ.
____
“I told you to make sure your no-good assistant sent her information to the right school,” She heard her mother boom from downstairs, pulling her from the world of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. She couldn’t even immerse herself into the actual novel without it being ruined in some way. Groaning, she stood from the fancy velvet chair positioned by the french doors leading to the terrace. She had lounged there for hours, reading as the sunbeams warmed her skin, protecting her from the air-conditioning. However, the slamming of the front door and her mother’s yelling destroyed her little bubble away from reality. “Honestly! I have no idea why you keep that assistant! She cannot make a simple appointment! She asked me to make an appointment to have lunch with you yesterday!” Ah, the infamous assistant argument - a classic in her house.
This was the same assistant who her father insisted had to be moved to Outer Banks with them. The same assistant who fails to transfer any calls from her or her mother to her father and the same one who apparently didn’t send Y/N’s papers to the right school. “I don’t see why we can’t just get her old school to fax this school her papers, then she can go to the Academy.” Her father defended, his deep voice vibrating through the floor as they argued in the living room, their voices echoing.
“Because the Academy doesn’t have any space left for her!” Her mother cried out in frustration, the sound of her heels clicking against the hardwood floor. Throwing her book on the couch, Y/N stumbled through her room, her bare feet thumping as she tripped over a curled-up corner of her rug.
“How was I supposed to know that?” Her father asked defensively as Y/N opened her door, trying her hardest not to let it squeak.
“Because we were in the same meeting, Todd,” Her mother exclaimed before heaving a sigh. “It’s fine. It will all be fine. She’ll do a semester at the public school then we’ll try to get her transferred to the Academy. I am sure with her marks they’ll accept her,” She mostly talked to herself, Y/N could tell by the way she was muttering and the sound of her heels pacing across the floor. “She’s already all set to go to the public school next week so that’s good, but I want that assistant fired!” She demanded, storming off, the sound of her heels clicking getting quieter and quieter as she walked into another room.
Y/N blinked, her head poking around her door, her hands gripping one of the double white doors, the tips of her fingers pressing against the expensive wood as she spotted her father sitting in the armchair in the far corner of the room her mother reserved for tea with Rose, his large hand thrown over his eyes as he sighed, deflating into the light pink cushion. Rolling her lips together, she doubted his stress from the fight with her mother. The stress was from having to let his assistant go. Nothing was a shock to her when it came to her parents. Infidelity was just another example of their paper-thin morals. The continuation of their marriage was just another ploy to get ahead in the hierarchical society.
A small, unmistakable pin sounded from her room, resounding through the silent house like a bullhorn. Jumping, she hid behind the one door she kept closed during her snooping to avoid her father catching her eavesdropping. Pressing her back flat against the door, she eyed her phone, the screen still bright from the text she had just received. The one time her phone wasn’t just on vibrate. Trying to make herself as light as she could, she glided over the polished floors, grabbing her phone from where it sat on top of her comforter. Looking at the notification from Kiara, she read the words ‘call me’. The two words made her feel like she was just struck with a mallet in the stomach.
“Call her,” She muttered in confusion, clutching her phone tighter as she made her way to the french doors she sat in front of earlier, slipping out into the much warmer air. As the clock struck noon, the temperatures seemed to rise only to plummet at night, classic August weather, the most perfect weather in Y/N’s opinion. “Why would she need me to call her?” She questioned, her mind whirling as it spit out the worst-case scenarios - a nasty habit of hers.
Clicking Kiara’s contact information, she lifted the phone to her ear, shutting the french door softly behind her before her fingernails fell between her teeth. Pacing along her terrace, she listened to the ring of the call going through, anxiously waiting for Kiara to pick up. “Y/N!” Her cheerful voice sounded as if it was feet away from her phone, telling her Kiara had put her on speaker.
“Kie! You scared me, I thought something happened!” Y/N scolded, happy that nothing horrible had happened, but still not happy that her friend made her think someone had been seriously injured.
“Sorry, I probably could have worded that better,” She apologized as some people muttered in the background of the call, whispering. “Anyway, I wanted to ask you if you wanted to come out on John B’s boat with us! It’s one of the last nice days we can go swimming before school starts, it’s kind of a tradition of ours to go out around this time.” She explained the reason for the near heart attack.
Sitting down on the outdoor couch she had on her terrace, she gazed out into her yard, the marsh sparkling in the August sun. “I don’t know Kie,” She shrugged, knowing full well Kiara can’t see the gesture. “I only really know you and Sarah.” She reminded her. She didn’t want to impose on their friendship tradition. They were a close-knit group, squeezing someone else in could disturb the balance, creating ripples in the group that turned into waves.
“Nonsense,” She cried over the phone and Y/N could visualize her waving her off with a flick of her hand. “John B and Pope would love to meet you, and JJ is going to be there! I’m pretty sure I saw you two talking at the Cameron’s party the other week.” At the mention of JJ’s name, both butterflies and doom swirled in her stomach. Sitting up straighter, she pressed her hand to her stomach, feeling slightly nauseous from the news. Going somewhere with JJ could go either way. He could look at her and not know her. He could look at her and immediately grab her, kissing her senseless before telling her he had imagined doing that since the party. If there was some way she could tell, she wouldn’t mind this position, but there was no way to tell. They had no other interactions. It was as if that night had never happened.
“Uh-” She tried to speak, but Kiara cut her off.
“Nope, I’ve decided for you, you’re coming.” With that, Kiara hung up, leaving Y/N sitting there, a looming sense of a grim fate hanging over her like her own personal storm cloud. Standing, her feet carried her stunned body back into her room. She was either marching herself to her funeral or to the best day of her life - either way, she only came too when she was walking to the end of her driveway with her bag of sunscreen, a towel, and a bathing suit - Sarah sitting in one of her dad’s cars, waiting to take her.
“I am so excited you’re coming out on the boat with us, you’re gonna love it,” Sarah gushed as she drove down the road. Y/N hummed half-mindedly, too wrapped up in her head to pay attention to Sarah. Instead, she was memorizing the way back to her house in case she needed a quick escape. Sarah continued to talk, the words floating in one of Y/N’s ears and out the other like a smooth stream. “And we’re here! Unfortunately, while you were daydreaming, Kiara texted me telling me JJ had to leave,” She told her, gathering her stuff from the cupholders. “Wonder where he had to go on such an important day.”
“Maybe he’s going to hang out with his girlfriend?” Y/N suggested, trying to hide the pain in her voice, hoping the slamming of her car door drowned it out enough for Sarah not to notice. She seemed not to as she scoffed, laughing as she closed her own door.
“JJ, a girlfriend,” She repeated, still laughing. “Not a chance, JJ has to be really wooed to settle down.” She informed her, making her heart sink as if tied to a cinder block and dropped into the ocean. Nodding, she swallowed thickly, muttering out a quick ‘good to know’ as she tried not to vomit.
“Y/N! You actually came, I’m glad my plan worked,” Kiara exclaimed, seeing the two girls walking to the dock the others stood on. “JJ had to leave, but he seemed really disappointed. He said, and I quote ‘it’s a shame, I would have liked to meet her’ which is weird because, a, it’s JJ, and b, I’m pretty sure I saw you guys talking at the party.” Kiara rambled before going back to digging in the cooler, making sure everything was in there.
“Must have been someone else, I never caught their name anyway.” She lied, regretting actually coming to this excursion as she was thrown back into her circle of angst and sadness. Of course, JJ didn’t remember her. What was memorable about her? Absolutely nothing apparently.
____
Burning. That was all she felt as she stood there, mostly hidden behind the display of roses. It was as if someone stabbed a scolding hot iron rod through her entire chest, her entire body burning as a repercussion. It was as if her world was on fire, melting around her, the flames licking at her skin. There he was. The first time she was seeing him outside of the classroom, he stood there with some other girl. The pair of them standing at the counter, talking lowly, their heads bowed towards each other as they browsed the booklet.
She couldn’t seem to swallow, a blockage forming in her throat as her eyes felt like they were ignited into flames. Maybe everyone was wrong. Maybe JJ was the type to settle down easily. Or maybe she had wooed him. Wooed him more than he had wooed Y/N. Maybe she had swept him off his feet. Y/N felt sick as she watched them, their hands brushing together ever so slightly. It was almost as if their fingers itched to hold each other just like Y/N’s itched to hold JJ’s again.
Forcing the bile back down her throat, she rushed towards the door of the florist, leaving her mother who didn’t even realize she was leaving, too worried about what flower she should get for the centrepiece of the table. Was that night all a lie? Did he really have someone waiting for him as he danced with her? Did he come to her knowing that he could easily get her to love him? Did he even know she loved him? Part of her wished he did know she loved him so horribly it hurt her. Maybe that was his plan all along. Go home to his girlfriend and tell her he had danced with someone, making her fall head over heels as a sick joke for them to laugh at. Maybe it was payback and Y/N was his willing accomplice.
She hunched over, her hands on her knees as she waited for the bile she couldn’t keep down to come up. Groaning, her stomach twisted more as she thought about it. She was ashamed to say that she hoped she was his favourite crime if that was his girlfriend. She hoped that he would look back at all the girls he flirted with only to laugh about on the way home to her and he found the night spent with her was the best. It made her sick. She was hoping that even if that was his girlfriend, he found himself longing for another crime committed with her. She hoped that he found himself thinking about her instead of that girl.
Finally, the bile came up, burning her throat as it splattered into the dirt of the alley between the florist and a clothing shop. Gasping, she stared down at the greenish-brown liquid, trying to keep the rest down as she breathed. “Oh my god,” She whispered, tears leaking down her face as she realized more. She wasn’t the princess in this story. She was the dirty, evil girl created to ruin the happy couple. She was the villain. She was never the main character. She was never Mr. Darcy, she wasn’t even Elizabeth. She was Mr. Collins or even Mr. Wickham. The nuisance who almost got in the way of the marriage. “Oh my god!” She exclaimed, her hands flying to cover her face as she leaned against the brick wall of the clothing shop behind her. The worst part of it all was that she would do it all again knowing full well he had a girlfriend. She would gladly commit the crime again as long as it was JJ she was doing it with. As long as it was his cerulean eyes were the ones staring back at her.
“Y/N? What are you doing in the alley-” Her mother trailed off, looking at the puddle of alkaline fluid her daughter had just thrown up then back at her. “You were sick,” She noted, walking over to Y/N, setting the basket of flowers she held on the ground by their feet, her hand feeling Y/N’s forehead. “You’re not warm,” She hummed, peering down at Y/N with furrowed brows. “This is about romantic things, isn’t it?”
“Yes.” Y/N whispered, her eyes closing shamefully. She wasn’t sure how her mother knew that, but she didn’t question it.
“Well, don’t worry dear, I can help you with that, trust me.” Her mother reassured her, her arm wrapping around Y/N’s shoulders, her other hand grabbing the basket, leading her out of the alley and to the car. Y/N feet seemed to drag along the ground as her mother supported most of her weight, the world spinning as she battled the bile threatening to rise once again. As her mother shoved her limp body into the passenger seat of the SUV, she was hit by the realization that she had been wrong earlier. The end of their storyline wasn’t when she opened the door to reveal Sarah and Kiara; the end was now. He had his happy ending and she was stuck with the shitty ending. She most likely won’t even get to have her new friends, how could she hang out with them when all they did was hang around the blue-eyed boy who managed to both light her heart up like a Christmas tree and smash it into a million pieces - all within three weeks.
____
Sniffling, Y/N rubbed her nose furiously with a kleenex as she angrily watched Johnny and Baby dance in his cabin, her lips tracing along his strong neck, his hands on her hips, pulling her flush against him. “Oh come on, like that would ever happen in real life,” She complained, tossing the crumpled-up tissue on the coffee table with the rest of them. “This sucks!” She cried, uncovering the remote from the pile of tissues as Johnny pulled Baby’s shirt off, his hands skimming over her smooth skin. The scene was cut off as Y/N slammed her thumb into the stop button, making the blue DVD screen glow into the darkened living room.
“Dirty Dancing didn’t even cheer you up,” Her mother asked, walking into the living room from the kitchen. Y/N huffed, looking over her shoulder at her mother as she gathered things. “That’s odd, it always worked in the past with this sort of thing,” She remarked, pausing her movements as she ruffled through the drawer of the writing desk that was filled with takeout menus. “It’s also one of your favourites.”
“Yeah, well it’s stupid. I don’t see why I loved it so much before,” Y/N grumbled, kicking her feet, messing up the blanket she had balled herself up in. Groaning, she regretted doing that now that she had to fix the blanket yet again. Her mother simply ignored her, grabbing the menu she was looking for and walking over to her. “In real life, Johnny isn’t going to come back and Baby will be stuck in the corner forever. Baby will live her entire life in the corner watching everyone else find someone because she is only destined for unhappy endings-”
“You think you’re going to live your life in the corner because that Waiter Boy from the party hasn’t come to pull you out,” Her mother theorized with a sigh, her hand falling onto Y/N’s blanket-covered knee. Raising an eyebrow at the hand, Y/N lifted her eyes to look at her mother - confused on how she managed to figure that out and why she was comforting her. She would assume her mother wouldn’t want her dating someone who had to cater parties. “Hun, believe me when I say this isn’t the end. You will find your Johnny-”
“I’ve been comparing him to Elizabeth Bennet in my head,” She sniffled out a correction, making her mother give her an odd look. “He bewitched me mind, body, and soul just like Elizabeth did to Mr. Darcy.” She explained with another sniffle.
Letting out a sigh of understanding, her mother nodded, patting her knee. “Then you’ll find your Johnny who is also your Elizabeth,” She corrected herself. “But never give up on them before they can come back. Don’t you think Baby was thinking she would never see Johnny again,” She posed the question, earning an odd look from her daughter. Brushing off the judging eyes, she continued. “But look, Johnny came back to her. And Elizabeth turned Mr. Darcy down the first time he professed his love for her, but he came back too.”
“So you’re saying, I might still have a chance with JJ?” Y/N asked, confused as to what her mother was trying to convey to her.
“If JJ is that waiter from the party, yeah, I guess. He did look at you like you were Baby or Elizabeth,” She agreed, blinking rapidly as she called her daughter Mr. Darcy in this situation. She never imagined herself having to call her daughter a stuffy rich man who was as grumpy as he was anti-social, but here she was. “But my main point was that sometimes you think your story is over with someone, but it’s not. You owe it to yourself not to give up on your Johnny. Believe me, you’ll regret it your whole life.”
“How do you know-” Y/N tried to ask, but her mother stood up, effectively cutting off the conversation.
“Well, I’m going to go order this pizza for us and you watch the rest of Dirty Dancing, then we’ll load up Pride & Prejudice next, maybe that will give you enough of a push to go after him for a change.” She remarked, her heels clicking as she strode off elsewhere in the house. Letting her mother’s words sink into her mind, Y/N licked her lips, softly pushing the play button once again, letting the scene from earlier play on.
Just as Baby and Johnny’s lips meet for a sweet, overdue kiss, a knock sounded over the soft music of the scene. Not even bothering to pause the movie, Y/N stood. The soft blanket fell from her shoulders, pooling on the couch behind her as her slippers scuffed against the hardwood. Humming to the music, she pulled the door open roughly, the shine of the sun that still stood tall in the sky burned her eyes, making her squint. She had just spent hours in the living room with all the blinds pulled shut and the lights off, the only light coming from the TV and now she was being bombarded by full-on sunlight.
Slowly, her eyes relaxed, the burning subsiding, allowing her to get a look at who stood on the other side of the door. Eyes widening and jaw-dropping, she swore her heart had stopped for a second before jumping with joy. “JJ?” She whispered, not believing her eyes. Sure, she saw the tall blonde standing there with a bouquet of flowers in his hands, but was it really him or an insanely realistic daydream fuelled by the influence of Dirty Dancing? She had no way to tell other than to ask.
“Uh, hi,” JJ smiled nervously making Y/N swoon, her knees nearly giving out on her. If this wasn’t a daydream and he really was there being all nervous, that means she had bewitched the flirtatious JJ. All Kiara and Sarah can talk about when discussing JJ was how much of a flirt and a womanizer he was. But yet, here he stood (in a possible reality) with his hand clutching the stems of twelve of her favourite fall flowers and a nervous smile on his face. He cleared his throat as she continued to gawk at him, too shocked to say anything. “So, watching some Dirty Dancing, huh?” He asked, looking into the house at the TV, seeing Johnny and Baby press their lips together as the scene changed.
“Yeah, yeah, um,” She trailed off, taking in his appearance. With furrowed brows, she looked down at his feet. “Are those Sperry Boat Shoes?” She questioned, looking closer at the light-coloured boat shoes before looking at the rest of his outfit. Clad in capris and a button-down, she almost felt like laughing at him. He looked so uncomfortable and awkward that it was almost as if he were a stereotypical high school poindexter.
“Yeah, they are, Sarah stole them from Rafe for me,” He confirmed, looking down at his shoes himself. “Turns out, he has way more than ten pairs of Sperrys in his closet.” He commented, looking back up at her as he referenced the night they last saw each other. Giving him another once over with a shake of her head, she eyed his gelled hair. It looked rock solid, even more tamed than what it was the night they met.
“Why are you dressed like this on my porch, JJ?” She asked, not understanding what was going on. Bashful, JJ looked at the flowers in his hand, pretending to smell them as he avoided answering the question. Flicking his eyes up without lifting his head, he hoped to see her distracted, forgetting about her question. Instead, he saw her crossing her arms over her chest, her slipper-covered toe tapping impatiently. Swallowing thickly, he lifted himself back to his full height, rolling his shoulders back as he prepared himself to lay it all on the line for her.
“I wanted to impress you. I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed that night at the Cameron’s party-”
She interrupted him softly, her shoulders dancing as she shifted her arms, wrapping herself up as if to protect herself from being insecure and fragile. “The time to do that would have been a week after the party, not three, JJ.” She informed him, making his head slump shamefully.
“I know, I know, but you have to understand, Y/N,” He sympathized. “You’re this amazing girl who has this bright future ahead of you, you live in something I can only describe as a freaking palace. But all I am is a piece of trailer trash that managed to be completely and utterly enchanted by you and your effortless beauty,” He paused, his chest sinking into him as he stared into her eyes, hoping he was conveying everything adequately. “You’re like a literal princess and I’m just some court jester who wishes he could be a prince so he could be enough for her,” He licked his lips as he prepared himself to continue on. Y/N blinked, watching as he worked himself up. “I knew I couldn’t show up like myself if I wanted to have even the slightest chance with you. You deserve someone who knows all the fancy crap like what kind of flowers to get in the fall or what kind of pants go with what shirt. But most importantly, you deserve someone who can get you flowers without having to pick up extra shifts.” He added the last bit shamefully, gesturing to the bunch of purple asters he held, the light pink wrap around them wrinkling as he hit it by accident.
The corner of Y/N’s mouth twitched slightly as a smile grew on her face. “I enchanted you?” She asked quietly, looking up at him bashfully.
“Mind and soul.” He breathed out with a nod, extending the flowers to her. She took them, gazing down at the bouquet in her hand. The vibrant purple shot out at her as she took in the flowers’ beauty. She was in awe of his words. Maybe she was Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy.
“But, there are some things I don’t quite understand,” She paused, realizing something. “First of all, when I was invited to go out on the boat, you suddenly had to leave and you said that you would have loved to meet me, why did you lie and why did you leave?” She questioned, letting the flowers fall lightly against her chest, neither one of them noticing as Dirty Dancing continued to play in the background loudly.
“The Country Club had called me after Kiara had invited you, someone didn’t show for their shift and they offered it to me since I had asked for extra shifts. It was a double and I knew every penny counted if I wanted to make a good second impression with you.” He informed her. She suddenly felt bad for thinking he hadn’t remembered her. She never thought for a second that he could have just had to go to work.
“Okay, I can understand that, but what about the girl you were with in the flower shop today? You looked really close to her and not in a friendly way.” She brought up the scene she had witnessed earlier. The same scene that made her hurl in an alleyway. JJ furrowed his brows, glancing down at the flowers she held then back up at her, hoping she would understand what he was saying, Though she did, she still wanted an explanation, prompting her to quirk an eyebrow in response.
“That was Ashlynn, she used to be my lab partner last year. I asked her for help planning all this since she’s a hopeless romantic too,” He explained. “We’ve been meeting in our spare time with her girlfriend, Kiara, and Sarah to plan this,” He continued, pausing as he looked towards the hedge that separated the Cameron’s yard from Y/N’s. “In fact, I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if they were spying on us from Sarah’s house right now.” He laughed as the hedge rustled unnaturally. Y/N found herself laughing as well. She felt stupid and ridiculous for jumping to conclusions about JJ.
Lifting the top of the flowers off her chest, she dipped her nose into them, buying her time as she tried to wrap her mind around everything. She had believed JJ was never going to show up, but yet, here he was - pulling her from the corner of self-pity and desperation she had shoved herself in, just like Johnny. “You know, you didn’t have to do all of this to have a chance with me, JJ,” She informed him, lifting her face from the fragrant flowers, gesturing to his getup and the flowers. “You had a chance with me all along. You captivated me that night and never let me go. Day in and day out, you were the only thing on my mind. I wanted you to show up at my doorstep and tell me that I had enchanted you as much as you enchanted me. I wanted to know that you were walking home that night in a world of clouds and fairy dust too,” She paused, rolling her lips together as she took in his outfit once more. “I don’t need someone who cares more about appearances than actual feelings, I don’t want someone like Rafe Cameron. Most importantly, I just want you, JJ.” She concluded, practically opening her chest up and offering him her delicate heart.
“Man, I feel stupid now-” He laughed, shaking his head as he looked down at himself. “I look like some nerd off a Disney show!” He exclaimed, gesturing to himself wildly. Y/N snorted out a laugh making her cheeks burn uncomfortably, her hand covering her mouth in shock. Even now, she was managing to embarrass herself horribly in front of this poor boy. But, just like that night, JJ’s smile grew at the sound, his eyes gleaming in adoration as he gazed down at her. Looking at her with her red cheeks, messy hair, and pyjamas.
“You think you’re stupid,” She asked, trying to recover from her embarrassment. “I thought Ashlynn was your girlfriend when I saw you guys in the flower shop! I also convinced myself you didn’t remember me at all!” She cried out, her eyes wide as she questioned how she could ever believe that someone would just forget someone they spent a whole night with.
“I convinced myself I had to work myself into the ground and completely change myself when all I had to do was talk to you,” He argued, almost frustrated with himself that he had gotten all up in his head about talking to a girl - something he claimed to be an expert on. “I think it’s safe to say that I’m the stupid one here. You were just trying to make sense of the signals I was giving off.”
“Okay, okay,” Y/N surrendered, smiling shyly as she prepared to ask the next question. “Would you like to come in while I get these in a vase?” She nearly whispered, stepping to the side, creating space for him to walk through the open door.
“I thought you would never ask,” He smiled that damn smile, almost making her fall over as he passed her, walking into the house, looking amazed as he took in the interior. “Could you maybe text Sarah to bring my clothes and stuff over? I really cannot stand these shoes or pants. I would do it, but she took my phone when I tried to put it in these pockets-” He gestured to the tight pockets on his capri pants. “Apparently these pockets aren’t functional.” He pried his thumb into it, trying to pull the pocket out, but there was no give whatsoever.
Y/N laughed, nodding as she grabbed her phone from the suddenly cleaned coffee table. “Of course, JJ, I figured you would be itching to get out of those.” She agreed, clicking her home button. She furrowed her brows when she saw a notification from her mom. ‘I snuck out the backdoor, the pizza is on its way and money is on the island in the kitchen. Enjoy life out of the corner hun ;).’ The text read. Pressing her lips together, she couldn’t help but let the smile take over her face. It seemed to her that the enchanting tale of JJ and Y/N didn’t have an ending in sight and her mother knew that from the start - way before either one of them.
"Hang on, I forgot something," JJ told her, catching her off guard as she started to type out a text to Sarah. Turning to face him, she opened her mouth to ask him, but his hand gripping her biceps firmly and his lips flattening against hers cut her off. Blinking in shock, it took her a second to melt into him, her body practically laying against him as their lips moulded together. Pulling away slightly, JJ whispered against her lips. "This." He answered her unspoken question before pressing his lips against hers rougher this time, his hands sliding up to cup her jaw. Angling her head up as her hands gripped the back of his restricting button up - once again feeling his back muscles tightening as he guided her jaw in the kiss with his thumbs and his own jaw, setting the pace.

twin pogues on hiatus
realize it's been over a year since i started this fic. struggling to finish it due to both life stuff and lack of motivation. this lack of motivation is preventing me from writing anything at all so i decided i'm going to put this fic aside for a bit. i plan on finishing it but i can't say when. i was just trying to write the next part and caught myself groaning as i had to keep referencing the episode to copy some stuff line by line. i'm feelin more creative than this right now, so i don't see myself continuing this rewrite for at least a few weeks. i'm sorry to disappoint y'all i know what it feels like when a fic ur following stops updating. good news is i've got a lot of other wips that i plan on releasing soon for several fandoms, including obx.

TEACH ME
Tumblr media
The lifeguard at the beach yesterday inspired me to write this…y’all tell me that’s 👆👆👆not JJ!!!!
Summary: The reader has to train a new lifeguard, a certain blonde who can’t seem to stop hitting on her.
Word count: 4.1k (Holy shit what did I do)
Warnings: Uh mentions of drowning, weed, fluff? Not much this is really just a sweet oneshot
Credit to @alexa-playafricabytoto for the killer idea…I don’t think I did it justice but here we go anyways 😂
DISCLAIMER: I don’t know shit about lifeguards and was too lazy to do research so this it’s extremely likely that this is HIGHLY inaccurate and I’m sorry about that but just go with it for fanfic purposes, eh?
“Hey, Y/N!” Mr. Rodriguez, your manager called out for you from his office in the beach’s visitor center. You had just clocked in, still in your jean shorts and tank.
You quickly walked over, popping your head in the doorway of his office. Seated in front of him, you noticed, was a blond in a red snapback, a Kildare County Marina T-shirt on. “Yeah, boss?” You asked.
He gave you a rare, sweet smile, gesturing for you to sit down.
Confused, you cautiously walked over, sliding into the empty chair beside the blonde boy. You felt him glance at you but you looked straight at your manager.
“So Kyle’s out on some family emergency this week…” Your manager started.
You scoffed inwardly but didn’t say anything out loud for the sake of being professional. Kyle’s family emergency was most likely him passed out and hungover after a night of drinking, smoking and a shit ton of coke or molly or acid or whatever he was taking these days.
“And seeing as he was your partner and was supposed to train the newbie,” Mr. Rodriguez continued, gesturing towards the boy beside you, “So meet JJ Maybank, your new partner until I decide he’s learned enough from you.”
Your beach’s lifeguards worked on a partner system, due to its size. There were always two lifeguards in every tower to maintain maximum security.
You tried not to groan. JJ Maybank? Of all the people in the world, you had to get stuck with the one notorious for recklessness, theft, and starting fights? Of fucking course, you did.
“Right,” You nodded, giving your manager a tight-lipped smile, maintaining your politeness while subtly letting him know you were not happy with the cards you had just been dealt.
Again, without looking at JJ, you stood up, your hands on your hips. “When do we start?” You asked.
“Right now.”
You nodded, turning on your heel and calling over your shoulder. “You coming, Maybank?”
You heard shuffling as he followed after your long strides. You grabbed a rescue buoy for yourself and tossed one to JJ, who caught it with ease. You walked toward the front desk, smiling at Cheri, one of the receptionists your own age who was always nice to you, letting you get away with things she probably shouldn’t have. Picking up two whistles, you walked out the door and finally greeted the boy.
“So you lifeguard now?”
He shrugged. “I do whatever to pay for my pot.”
You rolled your eyes, walking down the beach towards your assigned tower for the day. “I can respect that.”
“So there are a few things you should know,” You began, to which JJ listened intently.
“I figure Rodriguez has already been through the list of your duties?” You raised an eyebrow in question.
JJ nodded. “Thoroughly. He doesn’t think I’ve a single brain cell, that man. He tried to draw me a picture of the lifeguard tower.”
You held in a smile. “If you ask me, he’s right to think that,” you quipped, making JJ pout.
“Anyways, apart from that, you need to know a few other things that are kind of unwritten. For example, don’t bother telling people to get off the rocks, just be ready to save them if they fall.”
JJ wrinkled his brows. “The fuck kind of rule is that? Not even going to warn people?”
You shrugged. “Unless you want to make a scene with a bunch of Karens shouting at you for dictating rules on a public beach, then you’ll do as I say.”
JJ grumbled. ‘Yes, ma’am.”
“Bob your head every once in a while so you don’t miss the people right below you.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Keep the buoy on you wherever you go.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“And lastly, don’t ever think someone is faking anything. Doesn’t matter if your friend is pranking you, we gotta do what we gotta do. We have to save every last imbecile on this beach.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Frustrated, You turned towards him, stopping in the sand, one hand on your hip. “Oh, shut your trap with that ma’am nonsense, Maybank. Trust me, you lucked out with getting me as a partner over Kyle—”
JJ nodded. “I sure did, guy’s a total tool. Besides, hot girl over junkie guy,” he whistled low, “no debate there.”
You tried not to blush at JJ calling you hot, but you felt the tips of your ears turn pink.
“Right, well, you can’t be hitting on me while we’re working together, Maybank.”
“Why not?”
You stepped forward, poking him in the chest. “Because you’ve known me since we were kids, yet we’ve never spoken. So don’t go pretending that I’m not invisible anymore.”
JJ frowned.
You turned, “Come on, there’s work to do.”
One the two of you climbed up the tower, you put on your whistle and gestured for JJ to lean forward, so that you could toss it over his neck. He did so, accidentally knocking his forehead on yours. “Sorry,” he mumbled, stepping away.
As he settled in, you stripped your shorts and tank, now left in your ruby red lifeguard one piece.
Today was slow, being a Wednesday off-season, and JJ tried to start a conversation. He pulled out a joint and offered it to you.
You gave him an “Are you kidding me,” look and he shrugged, unbothered, lighting it up and taking a long hit. “So what’s Keith really doing if he’s not having a family emergency?”
“Kieth? You mean Kyle?”
JJ nodded. “Right, him.”
You laughed dryly, “Probably wrecked after popping ten too many pills and sleeping with a few too many girls. Guy doesn’t know when to stop.”
JJ didn’t look at you, looking out at the sea. “So when did you two break it off?”
“What—We—” You spluttered.
JJ took another long inhale from the joint. “It’s easy to see, babe.”
“I don’t think that’s any of your business,” you snapped, pulling down your sunglasses from atop your head, hoping to hide the emotions that were most definitely swimming in your eyes.
“S’not, I know,”
“Then why ask?”
“Just curious as to how a girl like you ended up with a douche like him.”
You were quiet for a moment, before you said, “He wasn’t always like this.”
“Only doing coke, not into molly yet?” JJ joked.
You chuckled. “No, not like that. He was incredibly kind, he had the biggest heart.” You fingered the wood on the arm of your chair.
“Then what happened?”
“Then his mom died, and I wasn’t enough.” Your hand retreated into your lap.
“He dump you?”
Your eyes narrowed. “No, I dumped him. I’m smart enough to know when I’m getting less than I deserve.”
JJ hummed. “I think I have a chance then.”
You laughed. “You’ve got nothing more than wishful thinking, Maybank.”
“Come to the kegger tonight. I’ll show you wishful thinking.”
You almost gasped at his forwardness. “No, you idiot.”
He turned towards you, meeting your eyes, pleading. You didn’t relent.
“Fine, miss, I’ll just let you keep that stick up your ass then.”
“I’m going to pretend you didn’t say that.”
When lunch came around, you let him go first, and when he returned, smelling of way too much weed, you asked, “You mind if I catch some waves? Think you can hold your own for a half hour?”
JJ gave a toothy grin. “Hell yeah, and watch you ride those waves? It’s going to be hard for me to watch anything but you.”
You smacked him over the head. “Do your job or we’ll both be in trouble, Maybank.”
You grabbed your board and climbed down, racing across the sand towards the water. Finally, you let yourself relax, sinking into the waves as they came. You even caught yourself doing a couple tricks, unconsciously trying to impress the blonde boy who was watching you from the tower. You felt high as a kite when you even managed to successfully execute several cutbacks in a row. You thought you heard a celebratory whistle from the direction of the tower and you jokingly gave a salute towards the beach.
As you climbed back up, JJ cheered. “Holy shit! I knew you were good, but god damn, Y/N! You gotta teach me how to do that Rodeo Flip! I’ve been trying to get it down for years!”
You laughed. “We’ll see, Maybank.”
His hands tugging at his hair in excitement, he asked, “How are you not going pro?!”
You shrugged. “I don’t do it for sport. It’s just something I do for me.”
JJ nodded, a renewed look of respect in his eyes. “Word.”
You spent the rest of your shift laughing at the ridiculous tourists on the beach, especially the ones that forgot sunblock.
You told JJ to go on ahead of towards the visiting center as you had a couple of things left to tidy up.
When you returned, he was chatting up Cheri, a thousand watt smile on her face as she enjoyed the attention from the pretty blonde.
You rolled your eyes, shoving past them to dump your equipment and clock out. You didn’t know what that bubbling feeling in your abdomen was, or why your stomach lurched at the thought of Cheri and JJ, or maybe you did, but you chose not to think about it too hard, afraid of the conclusion you’d come to.
As you walked out of the visitor center, turning towards home, you heard JJ call your name. You stopped, closing your eyes and muttering a silent prayer for the patience to deal with this boy.
He jogged out, making his way to you. “Hey!” He greeted, out of breath.
“Here to give me another half-assed invite to some kegger?” You asked.
JJ frowned, shaking his head. “No, I just wanted to clarify something you said this morning. You-You said that I thought you were invisible, because we’ve never spoken.”
“And?” you didn’t see where he was going with this other than to insult you.
“We’ve never spoken because I had the biggest crush on you Y/N. I’ve avoided you everywhere. You were hardly invisible to me. If anything, I didn’t think you saw me.”
You laughed. “Sure, Maybank.”
JJ shuffled his feet, shoving his hands in his pockets. “It’s true,” he mumbled.
You smiled, “Have fun at the kegger, JJ.” You gave him a peck on the cheek before walking off into the night, the darkness hiding your flaming cheeks.
You heard a celebratory whoop from behind you and bit your lip as you smiled.
Your heart felt light all week as you got closer to your partner. He was actually great at his job, especially with the children patrons on the beach, which greatly surprised you.
You remembered one day in the middle of the week, when you were dropping your equipment off, JJ didn’t have his whistle.
When you asked about it, he simply laughed. “This kid near the docks kept pestering me for it. Little guy wanted to be a junior lifeguard. Couldn’t say no…”
It was at the end of the week when you met his friends, the infamous, self-proclaimed pogues.
The trio had shown up near the end of your shift, claiming to be curious of the job that JJ actually managed to keep for longer than a day. JJ saw them approaching and immediately swore, turning towards you to say, “I’m going to apologize now for what you’re about to experience.”
Before you could ask what that meant, he had left, climbing down the towers to stop his friends from reaching you.
Confused, you made your way down, too, watching as a boy with shaggy brown hair clapped JJ over the back, ruffling his hair aggressively. “So this is what you’ve been missing out on pogue days for?”
A dark haired boy, who looked nervous about simply existing, added, “Not what, who,” nodding at you, standing with your arms crossed over your chest and an eyebrow cocked.
JJ had a permanent blush on his face, but you couldn’t puzzle out why. Meanwhile, you received a slightly reserved smile from the girl holding hands with the nervous boy. She waved politely.
The boy with shaggy hair marched forward, arms wide open to give you a hug. You thrust your hand out on instinct, which he looked at like a difficult algebra equation, before brushing it away gently and pulling you into his tight embrace. The boy gave great hugs, you had to admit. The kind of tight bear hugs you expect from your mom.
You laughed nervously, patting him on the back and looking over his shoulder at the other three, who all laughed. JJ mouthed I’m sorry at you and you responded with I’m going to kill you.
When he finally let you go, he tussled your hair and said, “Nice to meet the girl who’s got my boy tripping over his own feet to get to work. I’m John B.”
You flicked your eyes over to JJ, who was as red as a tomato. He buried his face in Pope’s shoulder, muttering something. You snorted. “Hardly. I’m Y/N.”
The dark haired boy grinned, “Trust me, we know. I’m Pope and this is Kie,” he introduced himself and what you assumed was his girlfriend.
In the next hour, you learned that JJ’s friends were loud, blunt and lacked basic manners in some ways, but they were youthful and thick as thieves, clearly a family.
There was something warm about Pope, something that allowed you to trust him immediately, completely. So when the other three were surfing, and he joined you on the sand, asking you, “So are you feelin’ my boy or what?”, you weren’t afraid to be completely honest.
Giving a short laugh at his bluntness, you admitted, “I don’t really know. There could be something there. There is something there, I think.”
“Then what’s stopping you?”
You would feel pathetic to confess this to anybody else, but Pope seemed like he wouldn’t judge you if you admitted to having three children. “I don’t know if we want the same things. I don’t see a guy like that in a serious relationship. Doesn’t seem like the type to settle.”
Pope grinned. “You know him well, then.”
Your heart fell as you thought that Pope was confirming your fears.
“But not well enough, I think. You’d be surprised. He’s kind of…obsessed with you. But not in the “Pokemon gotta catch ‘em all!” kind of way. He doesn’t see you as some sort of spiky eared Pichu…”
He trailed off and you looked at him, absolutely baffled. “I’m sorry…I don’t follow?”
Pope cleared his throat. “He likes you, Y/N, like really respects you and wants to make you happy. Any fool can see that.”
You were sure your entire body was on fire with how hard you flushed. “Oh.”
“Yeah, oh. Well, you keep him on his toes so we don’t mind. And it’s made him a little softer, a little more careful, which we definitely don’t mind. He needs to be checked, that one.”
Pope stood up, reaching his hand out and pulling you up. “Now, JJ tells me you have a killer cutback. Wanna show me?” He asks.
You give him a big smile, grateful for his kind words and ability to seamlessly bring you back to reality from that heavy conversation. “I’d love to. If you can keep up!”
Laughing, Pope followed you into the ocean, JJ giving you an excited smile as you joined him in the water, content to see you getting along with his family.
Later that night, when his friends left, and JJ was helping you towel off your hair while shaking his own like a wet dog, making you giggle and shriek at the sensation, he asked, “You wanna actually catch some waves outside of this beach sometime?”
It was your conversation with Pope earlier that gave you the confidence to say, “How about tomorrow? It’s our day off…”
“I’ll pick you up before dawn then?”
You nodded, “Sounds perfect.”
He tossed you your towel, casually throwing an arm over your shoulder as the two of you walked back to the visitor’s center.
The next morning, you were a mess. JJ had never seen you in anything aside from your lifeguard uniform and you nearly lost your mind trying to figure out what to wear. You felt like a middle schooler deciding what to wear on the first day of school to impress their crush.
Eventually, you thought to hell with it, and just went with a blue romper over your swimsuit, letting your hair down for once.
You didn’t bother with makeup since you were planning to get soaked anyways.
When you heard the distinct sound of a large engine approaching, you walked out of your house, curious.
When the image of JJ on a dirt bike came into focus, you couldn’t help the cackle that tittered out of your mouth.
He slowed down to a complete stop in front of your driveway, swinging his leg over and walking up to you, spinning the key ‘round his finger.
“Hey, dude!” He greeted, sweeping you up in an unexpected hug. Still, you melted into his frame, letting your usually rigid spine relax, feeling JJ nuzzle into your shoulder slightly and sighing.
You pulled away after a moment and JJ rubbed the back of his neck shyly, shuffling his feet awkwardly. “Sorry, I-uh, I really needed that today.” This boy was touch-starved.
You patted his chest as you walked towards the dirt bike. “S’alright, it happens to the best of us.”
JJ followed you. “You ever ridden one of these before?”
You cocked your head at him. “Oh yeah, all the time.”
He looked surprised, before handing you the keys and raising his eyebrows in challenge. “Prove it.”
You simply smirked and mounted the bike, pretending you didn’t hear JJ mumble “That’s hot,” under his breath. Instead, you started the engine and nodded at him to get on behind you.
JJ smiled before climbing on behind you, scooching forward until every inch of your back was flush against his front.
“Let’s go, babe!” You said, before taking off down the street.
JJ gave you directions, steering you into areas of the Cut you had never been, which was saying something since you knew this town like the back of your hand.
Finally, he pulled up to a small cove, where you saw a small patch of sand. It was the farthest land towards the sea, meaning you would probably find the biggest waves.
“Holy shit, how did I not know this place existed?”
JJ grinned, bringing you to a small shack where a couple of boards were hidden from view in the foliage.
He handed you a board. “I’m full of surprises. Your hair smells nice, by the way.”
“Stop that!” You laughed.
“Stop what?”
You slapped him over the head. “Making me blush.”
“Don’t think I will.”
You rolled your eyes and simply unzipped your romper, ignoring the whistle from JJ as you stepped out in only your swimsuit. You laid the fabric over the handle of his dirt bike and turned towards him. He was still in his T-shirt and swim trunks.
“Aren’t you going to take your shirt off?”
JJ gave a shit-eating grin, “My, my, Y/L/N, at least take a guy to dinner first.”
You shoved at his chest. “No, you dumbass, I meant you can’t surf in that.”
JJ opened his mouth as if to say something before pausing and wrinkling his nose. “It’s just not a good idea for me today.”
“What did you eat a little too much? I can promise I’m not afraid of a food baby, Maybank, I can deal.”
JJ tried explaining before just giving up and pulling his shirt off, leaving you shocked and incredibly confused, not to mention concerned.
Bruises littered his body, beginning at his shoulder and ending far below his ribs. Involuntarily, your hand brushed his skin. “What the fuck happened, JJ?”
He shrugged. “S’my Dad, you know. Gets angry sometimes is all.”
You shook your head sadly. “You don’t deserve that.”
JJ laughed darkly. “That’s up for debate.”
You stomped your foot. “No, it’s absolutely not! No one deserves that, especially not you.”
JJ softened. “You really think so?”
“Of course I do.”
He gave a small smile. “So you won’t make fun of me for not being able to keep up with you today? It’s only because I got my ass kicked, otherwise I’d surf circles around you all day.”
His words made you frown, but you recognized the coping mechanism and simply said, “Oh sure, Maybank. You know as well as I do that there’s not a world where you can surf better than me.”
He shrugged, walking towards the water. “I can sure as hell try, babe!”
Surfing with JJ was an experience on some whole other level. Sharing a wave was something even the most experienced surfers didn’t attempt, but something in you trusted JJ and the two of you tried it out. It was absolutely surreal, until JJ didn’t resurface.
Your euphoric smile quickly turned into a panicked cry. “JJ? JJ?!” You looked around and caught sight of him hanging on to his board, eyes closed. You swiftly untied your board from your ankle and swam over to him, pulling him towards you. He was like dead weight. You dragged him over to the shore and dumped him there, immediately leaning down to check his pulse.
You felt it clear as day, but tears filled your eyes. “JJ! Wake up!”
You began chest compressions immediately. Before you even got to ten, however, you heard a giggle.
Bewildered, you looked at his smiling face, his amused blue eyes laughing at you.
You instantly flinched away, retreating from him. “You were faking?”
JJ nearly choked on his laughter. “You-you should have—” He tried to breathe through the guffaws “—seen your face! Priceless!”
You slapped at his chest with your fists as he sat up, ignoring his slight winces given his prior injuries. “Ay, ay what’s up with that! Stop it, Y/N!”
“You bastard! I thought you were dying!”
JJ softened, before holding the back of your neck and pulling you towards him, leaning in to capture your lips with his. It was sweet and short and he pulled away quickly, asking. “Was that alright?”
You shook your head, pouting. “No, another!”
He smiled, but gave in to your pleas gleefully, his other hand coming over the front of your neck, pulling you closer to him by your throat. You bit his lip harshly, still angry from the stunt he had just pulled and his whined quietly, moving his hand down your spine, hands brushing the bare skin that your swimsuit exposed.
He lay back, pulling you on top of him. You straddled him, allowing him to deepen the kiss. You didn’t realize how much you had wanted this until you were doing it. You were kissing JJ Maybank. And it felt right. It felt as right as surfing did, maybe even better, you dared to think.
Maybe it was the fact that he kissed you like he had all the time in the world and didn’t care, because he was hungry right now. Maybe it was how he held you like he was afraid you would let go. Maybe it was how he managed to wordlessly beg for your skin on his, clearly touch-starved. Whatever it was, it solidified the growing feelings you had for the blonde, blossoming into something new, something stronger, something better, until you couldn’t hear any of your own thoughts other than his name–over, and over and over again.
When you finally broke that time, you smiled into his neck, trying to catch your breath. “Wow,” sighed JJ, “That was some kiss, babe. If you kiss me like that forever, I’ll die a happy man.”
You giggled, but sat up slightly, flicking his nose. You knew you had to get this awful, insecure doubt of yours out of your mouth right now before you let it fester into something that could ruin this beautiful thing you were creating with JJ. “If you ever break my heart, JJ, I swear to God, you better not cheat on me.”
He frowned. “Wouldn’t dream of it. I’ve wanted this forever. Can’t fuck it up now.”
You smiled, bending down for another kiss. JJ stopped you. “Wait. While we’re making promises, let me just say, if you ever get back with Kyle, I will sue.”
You thought the whole town probably heard your laugh then.
K so not my best work but hope y’all liked it!

Stella of Fricking Solaria, my dudes
Tumblr media
Why Miss Stella of Solaria is Hands Down My Favorite Winx (Tecna is an extremely close second):
Disclaimer #1: I'm referring to Stella from the OG show, the Italian-American Winx Club Animation, obviously not the other thing that Netflix decided was okay to produce.
Disclaimer #2: Not an argument for why Stella is the best character by any means, just a blurb about what I believe are her highlights and things I relate to about her most. Why she's my favorite character. All a matter of personal opinion please don't come at me for it lmfao.
First and foremost, Stella is an utterly loyal friend. She is the very best person to have at your side in a fight, in a time of need, in a crisis, during a heartbreak; you name it--my girl is the one who’s there any way she can be, trying her best to cheer you up or feel your feels with you any way she knows how. That’s not to excuse her often misguided attempts at consoling her friends, which often turn out to be more hurtful and disastrous, but we also know that she always realizes her mistake, if not by herself, with the help of her girls, and owns up to it, making it up to anyone she hurt. We are introduced to Stella as quite literally, Bloom’s day one. Despite being a princess to essentially the ruling kingdom/planet of the entire goddamn galaxy or Magical world or whatever you want to call it (cut me some slack it’s been a hot minute since I did a rewatch), her view of friendship has not been distorted in any way. She does not have difficulty recognizing her role in Bloom’s life, completely embracing sisterhood and always having her best interests at heart. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, Stella is Bloom’s biggest supporter and would quite literally do anything for her. She doesn’t have any close friends before Bloom, so when the two’s lives do become intertwined, they quickly become family. The two of them are the perfect role models for the purest female friendship that doesn’t ever show them having anything but each other’s best interests as their absolute priority.
There’s still a lot more I want to say about Stella and friendship, as that’s undeniably her best character trait, but I do want to talk about her personality--her humor, her emotional sensibility, her independence, etc.
Who doesn’t relate to a character who uses humor as a coping mechanism? Miss Stella’s a princess, born and bred, and I assume both due to that and to her parents’ failing marriage, Stella views emotional vulnerability as weakness on her part. This is what makes her partially blind to her friends’ feelings at times, not understanding as to why they feel like shit when they could just move on or fix the problem. She doesn’t always understand that most people go through heartbreak and grief and truly let themselves feel what they need to feel before moving on. Of course, this doesn’t mean she’s incompassionate, it simply takes her more time. Towards herself though, she doesn’t usually show the same empathy. While Stella’s anger is absolutely scorching, visible to everything and everyone and quite literally destroying everything in its path, Stella’s more complex emotions like self-hate to some extent, sorrow and guilt for her parents’ whose marriage is falling apart and she most definitely feels partly responsible for, are almost invisible at times. This is because she is the happy, cheerful one--the Fairy of the goddamn Shining Sun. She’s not meant to have a cloudy day, because she doesn’t allow herself to. This is where her sense of humor comes into play. If she ever catches herself revealing too much about any sort of negative emotions she might be feeling at the moment, you can bet your ass that she’s going to immediately laugh nervously, make a joke and try her very best to change the subject.
Anyway...kinda burnt out but I still wanna post this so maybe part two later.
