The Bathtub
Felix Catton x Fem Reader
Warnings: smut, unprotected sex, spying.
A/N: I had watched Saltburn the other night and the bathtub scene was a tad disturbing but then I had thought I’d put a spin on it with a female who let’s face it is less creepy than Oliver. This is my first attempt at writing an imagine with smut.
Tumblr media
Felix and I had met this past semester at Oxford. We had been paired up on an assignment together and had hit it off. He was incredibly attractive and really down to earth once you got to know him. During our time working together on the assignment we had become really close.
During the time we had spent together on the assignment he had learned that my parents and I hadn’t spoken in over a year, and that I really didn’t have a place to go home to after the semester had ended, that’s when he invited me to spend the summer at Saltburn, his family’s estate.
The day the semester ended we had loaded up in Felix’s vehicle and drove to the large estate. Once we arrived he had taken the liberty of showing me around the vast estate, ending the tour with my bedroom for the summer. My bedroom was connected to his through a shared bathroom. The proximity of our rooms had trouble written all over it.
I had been at Saltburn for a little over a week when one night, I was heading to the bathroom to rest and wash away all the stress of the day in the large clawfoot tub. As I approached the bathroom I could hear low groans coming from the other side of the door. My curiosity had gotten the best of me and I chose to peek through the small crack in the door. There in the tub with his head thrown back in pleasure was Felix.
He was pleasuring himself, low guttural groans leaving his mouth. The sight of him, his head thrown back groaning in pure pleasure was absolutely breathtaking, I was undoubtedly turned on by the sight in front of me.
Instinctively my hand slipped beneath the waist band of my yoga pants, the dull ache between my legs begging to be satiated. My fingers graze the sensitive bud between my legs, sending a wave of pleasure rippling through my body. My fingers slip past my folds and two enter my core, instinctively I let a moan slip from my lips at the sensation. Felix’s head snaps up and in my direction, our eyes making contact through the crack of the door.“I’m sorry
Felix's eyebrows were raised and he stared at me, his lips were slightly curved in a small smile. “You know it’s rude to spy on people,” he smirks. “Especially when they’re in a vulnerable state.”
“I wasn’t trying to spy on you,” I say softly. “I was coming to take a bath myself, when I caught you jerking off.” I confess. “It was kind of hot and turned me on a bit.” I say blatantly.
Felix's eyebrows rose slightly and his tone of voice changed to a more sultry tone. "So you're saying you like what you saw?"
“I’m not saying I didn’t like it” I counter, biting my bottom lip. The ache between my legs suddenly coming back with a vengeance.
Felix's facial expression changed to a small grin, revealing his pearly white front teeth. “I’d say you really liked it, judging by the moan I heard come from you.”
“Would it be a problem if I did?” I retort raising an eyebrow waiting for his response.
His grin extended into a full smile and he looked directly into my eyes. "No, It wouldn't be a problem. It’d turn me on."
“Oh more turned than you already are?” I ask nodding my head in the direction of his erection hidden behind the wall of the bathtub.
Felix's breath became rapid and his eyes darkened. "Were you impressed with what you saw?"
“Unfortunately I couldn’t actually see just how big your cock is,” I sigh pouting a bit. “I’m kind of disappointed about that.”
He let out a small laugh and a cocky grin appeared on his face. “I’d let you see just how big I am but I don’t think you’d be able to handle it.”
“I’d be willing to bet,” I say my eyes trailing over his naked body until it disappears behind the tub wall. “I could handle it and blow your mind in the process.” I wink at him.
Felix raised an eyebrow. "Oh, really?" He paused for a moment, a grin plastered on his face. "Show me what you can do then." His tone of voice was flirtatious and suggestive.
“Be careful what you wish for. I think you underestimate me and my abilities.” I smirk biting my lip and leaning against the door frame.
A tiny and teasing smirk crossed Felix's face. "I'm willing to find out."
“I’m willing to show you” I smirk leaning off the door frame and walking to the tub. Stripping out of my clothes as I do.
Felix's breath became rapid and he stared at me, his lips curved into a hungry grin, as he adjusted to make room for me. I slowly dipped one foot in the tub drawing out the anticipation of the moment. My other foot followed, and slowly I slid down in the water between his spread legs, “mmm you’re much bigger than I thought you were.” I moan as I eye his cock erect out of the water.
“Do you think you could take all of me?” He asks eyeing me from across the tub. “I’d love to bury every last inch inside that little pussy of yours.”
His words turn me on more than I already was. I lean up on my knees and slide over to him. My hands running up his legs slowly, teasing him. I grab his length in one of my hands and slowly start to pump up and down on his shaft in a rhythmic motion. He throws his head back a groan escaping his lips. The sight encouraging me to keep going. I bend down and lick my tongue around the head of his cock. The taste of his arousal hitting my tongue as I do.
I take the tip in my mouth sucking it softly and I feel his hands tangle in my hair and his hips are lifting off the bottom of the tub shoving his massive cock deeper down my throat. The tip hitting the back of my throat makes him moan and the sound of his moan drives me wild. I begin bobbing my head up and down his cock, taking him in until he hits the back of my throat and then sliding him out until the head is between my lips and sucking on it softly, making his grip tighten in my hair. He shoves my head back down holding it in place as the head of his cock tickles the back of my throat making me gag. Then roughly he jerks my head up causing his length to fall out of my mouth with a satisfying pop.
He pulls my hair back making my back arch with it, my large perky breasts on full display for him. He leans down and traces his tongue from my collar to my earlobe and whispers “That mouth of yours works wonders you know,” he nibbles on my lobe. “I nearly came from just having your mouth wrapped around me, but I’d much rather that sweet pussy of yours be what milks me dry tonight.” He kisses down my neck to my chest until he can take one of my nipples in his mouth and suck on the hardened bud. He swaps to the other nipple showing each equal attention when his free hand slips between us and finds my clit. The combination of him sucking on my nipples and rubbing the sensitive bud between my thighs elicits a loud moan from me. “Oh Felix,” I cry as his fingers find my entrance and he slips two fingers inside me easily. His fingers curl as he pumps them in and out of my pussy hitting my g spot each time pushing me closer and closer to my orgasm.
Too soon he slips his fingers from my core and brings them to his lips tasting my arousal. “Mmm” he moans “you taste so fucking sweet.” He says pulling his fingers from his mouth and pulling me up to face him our lips centimeters apart. “I think you should taste yourself too,” he says sliding the two fingers he had buried inside me in my mouth and instinctively I suck on them.
“You’re a dirty little slut aren’t you?” He says before he pulls me in and kisses me with a passion I’ve never felt before. Breaking the kiss he pulls away and with a wicked grin says “ride my cock like a good little girl.”
Without hesitation I do as I’m told. He pulls his legs together and slides down the back of the tub to make things easier on me. I straddle him hovering inches above his long hard cock. I take it in one of my hands lining it up with my center, the head slipping past my folds and sending a shiver down my spine. Slowly I slide down on his length letting him fill me up to the hilt. It takes a few moments for me to adjust to his size and how deep inside me he is before I start to bounce up and down on his length, circling my hips around as I do so.
“Your pussy is so tight baby,” he moans as I bounce on his cock, his hand comes around my neck choking me. “It makes me want you fill you with my cum.” He leans in and bites and sucks on my neck leaving a trail of hickeys as he goes. I can fill my orgasm building in the pit of my stomach as I grind on his cock.
“Felix,” I moan “I’m going to come.” My movements get sloppy and my walls clamp down around his cock as my orgasm rips through my body.
“That’s it baby cum for me,” he praises. “You feel so good wrapped around me as you cum.” My orgasm ends and I stay straddling him for a few moments before standing and climbing out of the tub. Felix following close behind me.
“I hope you don’t think this is over,” he says as he grabs me and pins me against the wall. “I haven’t finished yet” he leans down and kisses me hard, his fingers sliding down my body until he reaches my sopping cunt. He slides three fingers inside me this time pulling a moan from my lips as I wrap my right leg around his hip as he pumps his fingers in and out of my pussy.
“I’m going to come again,” I moan in his ear and suddenly he’s pulling his fingers out of me. Eliciting a whimper from the loss of contact.
“Wrap your arms around my neck.” He commands. Without hesitation I do as I’m told. He then lifts me up off the ground and I wrap my legs around his waist as his cock slips easily into my pussy, pulling another moan from my lips.
With his hands grasping my thighs he bounces me on his cock, going deeper than he was earlier, hitting my g-spot with every thrust pushing me closer and closer to my climax. His movements become rigid and I can tell he is close, by the grunts he makes as he drives deep into me.
“I’m coming Felix,” I cry as he pushes me into the wall thrusting his hips up into my core. My walls clamp around him and my second orgasm rips through my body.
“Fuck!” He groans with one last thrust. Before his orgasm rips through him, his cock spasming inside me as his seed fills my cunt. “That was fucking amazing.” He whispers kissing me sweetly, his cock still buried inside my pussy. He pulls out of me and places me down.
“That was the best sex I’ve ever had” I say still holding onto his neck for balance because my legs are weak and trembling.
“Agreed,” he smiles “we should definitely do it more often, but right now I think you need to clean up a bit.” He says as he looks down, his cum leaking from my body.

New Girl: An OBX Story
Part VIII: You Sank His Boat?
Part 7
Tumblr media
(Y/n’s POV)
A couple days had passed with not much excitement. I had spent time here and there with the pogues but mostly I stayed at home with my parents. I was sitting in the living room watching a baseball game with my dad when my phone vibrated beside me.
I picked it up and was greeted with a text notification from Kie.
Kie: Hey wyd tonight?
Me: Nothing that I know of why?
Kie: there’s an outdoor movie night tonight and we’re all going, wanna come?
Me: yeah sure sounds like fun!
Kie: Great we’ll pick you up around seven!
Me: Ok! See y’all then!
“Who you texting sugar?” Dad asked.
“Just Kie,” I smiled. “She invited me to an outdoor movie night that’s being hosted in town.”
“Oh sounds fun,” he replied. “Are you going to go?”
“I had planned to, that is if you and mama are ok with it.”
“Of course we are honey,” my mama said walking into the living room. “What time are you leaving?”
“Kie said they’d be here at 7 to pick me up.” I smiled at her, “thank y’all!”
“You’re welcome,” Dad said, “we like your friends they’re good kids.”
I just smiled my friends were good people no doubt but we had some pretty sketchy adventures and my parents would die if they knew about them. We sat and continued to watch the rest of the baseball game, cheering anytime something good happened for LSU. The game ended with an LSU win and by the time it was over it was five in the evening.
I got up from the leather couch and made my way upstairs to the bathroom where I could shower and get ready for the night. I wanted to look cute tonight so I decided to go all out. I curled my brunette hair and pulled it up in a half up half down hair do. I did my makeup in a glamorous but neutral look. Once I was done with my hair and makeup I made my way to my closet. I pulled out a pair of ripped jean shorts and added my black Zach Bryan shirt to it and finished off the look with my hey dudes. I put on my Sagittarius necklace, I checked my outfit in my mirror and was pleased. I then grabbed my phone and checked the time. It was 6:50 the pogues would be here any minute.
I went downstairs to the living room, my mama was the only one in there. “You look cute,” she smiled. “Trying to impress someone?”
“No mama,” I laughed and I could feel the blush creeping up my cheeks. “I just wanted to look cute tonight I haven’t really got done up since we moved here.”
“Mhmm.” She said skeptically, “I think you’re trying to look cute for one of those boys you’ve been hanging out with.”
“Whatever you say mama.” I said rolling my eyes but maybe she was right maybe some part of me wanted to look cute for the boys. I was drug from my thoughts by my phone ringing. JJ’s name popped up on my screen, “I have to go,” I mouthed to my mom as I answered the phone. “Hello?”
“Hey hot stuff we’re pulling in your driveway.” His voice rang through the phone, “are you ready?”
“Yeah I’m coming out the door,” I said hanging up the phone. “Bye mama I’ll see you later!” I called as the door shut behind me.
My feet moved fast as I heard the rocks under my feet crunch as I made my way to Kie’s suv. The passenger window rolled down and my ears perked up at the sound of a wolf whistle coming from the car. “Looking good tonight!” Kie called leaning over Pope. “You’re in the back!”
I nodded in response and opened the back passenger door, JJ was sitting behind Kie he snapped his head in my direction as the door opened. His blue eyes widened as I came into view and a smile graced his face. I slid into the backseat and smiled over at him. “So what movie are they playing tonight?” I asked.
“It’s some older movie,” JJ said, “like it’s in black and white that’s how old it is.”
“Oh so we’re watching like a special showing or something?” I said looking over at JJ his hat was on backwards and his blonde hair was flipping out from under his hat. He had on a grey T-shirt and his normal khaki shorts had been replaced by a pair of blue jeans. He looked rather handsome tonight.
“Yeah I guess you could say that,” he said looking over to me with a smile, “you look nice tonight.” He scooted a little closer to me.
“Thank you,” my cheeks flushed, “so do you.”
“So who are you all dressed up for tonight y/n?” Pope asked.
“No one,” I laughed, “I just wanted to look cute tonight.”
“You always look cute,” JJ muttered quietly.
“Awe I bet Jay thought you were trying to impress him,” Kie teased.
JJ flipped Kie off and she just laughed he went to say something but she turned the radio up to drown him out. The sound of “Just Pretend” by Bad Omens filtered through the car I couldn’t help but sing along to the song. I lost myself in the song and before I knew it we were pulling into the outdoor cinema.
I got out and met everyone at the back of Kie’s car. The hatch was open and she was pulling out blankets and handing them off to each of us. She had only pulled out three blankets, two of us were going to have to share. As we were making our way to the sitting area I saw Rafe, Topper, and Kelce staring us down, instinctively I moved closer to JJ. “The kooks are watching us,” I whispered to him.
“Great so much for a drama free night,” he sighed.
“Maybe they’ll ignore us tonight,” I smiled up at him.
“Maybe,” he smiled back draping his arm around my shoulder. “Hey I know there’s not enough blankets for everyone to have their own but we can share mine if you’d like.”
“I’d like that.” I leaned into him a bit more as we walked.
We finally found a spot where we could set out our blankets and we all settled in to watch the movie. JJ and I were sharing his blanket and we were sitting extreme close to each other. I kept hoping he would make a move, drape his arm around me and pull me in but he hadn’t yet. A breeze blew through and sent a chill through my body. I shivered my teeth chattering lightly.
“Are you cold?” JJ asked scooting closer to me.
“Just a little,” I said, “I’ll be alright though.”
“If I had a jacket I’d give it to you.” He smiled looking down at me.
“Really JJ I’m ok,” I shivered again.
“Come here,” he said putting his arm around me and pulling me to him. I laid my head on his shoulder and inhaled his scent. He smelled like teakwood and musk. He was wearing cologne today. I got comfortable in his embrace and enjoyed the movie.
______________________________________
(JJ’s POV)
Y/n had her head on my shoulder and my arms were wrapped tightly around her. Her breathing was steady, comfortable, I wasn’t watching the movie but instead was entranced by the girl laying in my side she was beautiful even when she wasn’t trying to be, but tonight she looked amazing. Her was done and she had gone all out with her makeup. She said she wasn’t trying to impress anyone tonight but she had definitely caught my eye, she always catches my eye even when she’s pulled her hair in a messy bun and has no makeup on at all. The wind was blowing more steady now and the smell of her hair wafted to my nose, it smelled like strawberries.
“JJ,” Pope called breaking me from Y/N’s spell. “I gotta go take a leak man.”
“Ok and you’re telling me this why?” I asked.
“I don’t want to go alone,” he said looking behind us. Topper, Rafe, and Kelce sat in lawn chairs behind us watching the movie. Well two-thirds of them were watching the movie. Rafe was too busy staring daggers into me I assume because of how close Y/n and I were.
“Shit they’re blocking the bathrooms,” I sighed, “You’re not going to be able to get to the bathroom man.”
“Where am I going to go then?”
“Over there, behind that tree,” I pointed in the direction of the large tree.
“Good deal,” Pope stood quickly.
I rubbed Y/N’s shoulder, “I’ll be right back babe.” I stood up and followed Pope instantly missing the closeness between Y/N and I.
“Where are y’all going?” She asked.
“Gotta take a leak,” I responded walking backwards toward the tree.
“What are y’all going to hold it for each other?” Kie asked. I flipped her off and turned to follow Pope.
We made it to our destination and did what he had set out to do. I had finished pissing and was waiting for Pope when I heard footsteps approaching in the distance. “Dude hurry up!” I said with urgency in my voice.
“I’m done, I’m done!” He exclaimed as he zipped up his pants.
We turned to head back to the girls but we’re met by the three kooks blocking our path. The backed us further away from our seats and we were now behind the outdoor movie screen.
“I know it was you who sank my boat.” Topper said as he walked closer to Pope, “admit it!”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Pope replied.
“You’re not so bad without your gun are you?” Rafe taunted me.
“Take one more step and I will end you!” I challenged.
Topper taunted Pope calling him a thief repeatedly until he snapped and head butted him. In that instant the fight was on. We were outnumbered, topper was focused on Pope and Rafe and Kelce came after me. Kelce had gotten me in a headlock and Rafe was standing in front of me.
“You know,” he said walking closer to me. “Y/N sure looks too good to be hanging on the arm of someone like you. She should’ve been here with me.”
“Well maybe if you weren’t so shallow and got to know her,” I sneered, “you could’ve had a chance with her, she’s a great girl but you couldn’t see past her looks and money.”
His fist collided with my gut. I struggled against Kelce’s hold while Rafe continued his barrage of blows.
“Rafe you asshole,” Y/N’s voice rang out. “Get off of him!” She grabbed his shoulder and struggled against him to pull him away from me. He shoved her to the ground and turned his attention back to me. Kie was trying to get Topper off of Pope, she was hitting him on the back.
Y/N soon recovered from Rafe shoving her off of him and returned with a vengeance, this girl was resilient and I think I’m falling in love with her. She tapped Rafe on his shoulder and when his head turned she punched him square in the jaw. He stumbled back nearly falling.
“A little help here!” Topper shouted, Kie was still landing blows on his back.
Rafe stood up and his attention was focused Y/N, he lunged at her and she jumped out of the way, he was shouting profanities at her and she shot right back. Rafe eventually caught Y/N he had her wrists in his hands. She struggled against him and rage flooded through me, I broke free of Kelce’s hold and was making my way to Y/N and Rafe when all of the sudden the movie screen went up in flames. The kooks hold on each of the respective pogues was let loose and they ran off. I grabbed Y/N’s hand and we all ran in the opposite direction of the kooks.
Once we got to Kie’s car everyone was out of breath. “What the hell happened?” I asked.
“I set the screen on fire,” Kie shrugged. “It got us out of trouble didn’t it?”
“You saved our asses,” I laughed.
“JJ,” Y/N breathed softly, “you’re bleeding.” She said as she touched my lip that I didn’t realize was sore until her soft fingers brushed it.
“I’ll be alright,” I smiled at her. Her concern was adorable.
“We need to get out of here,” Kie said as she started the car.
The ride back to Pope’s house was spent in silence. As we approached I could see the flash of blue and red lights. The cops were here, for what though, remained unseen. As Kie put the car in park we all jumped out and ran to his front door. Once we entered his house we were greeted by Deputy Shoupe.
“Pope Hayward,” he said sternly. “You’re under arrest for the vandalism of Topper’s boat.” He put Pope’s hands behind his back and was getting ready to put the cuffs on him.
“Wait,” I piped in, “it wasn’t him, it was me.” I said. Pope and Y/N both looked at me shocked, they knew the truth, but I couldn’t let Pope ruin his future. He had a bright one ahead of him and me, well I had nothing.
“No JJ wait.” Y/N and Pope said in unison.
I looked at them pleading for them not to say anything. I had nothing to lose, I’d be ok. Y/N’s face fell, she looked heart broken her eyes glistened in the flashing lights outside. Even upset she was beautiful. Shoupe put me in the back of a squad car and soon pulled out of the Haywards driveway. I watched Y/N and my friends disappear into the night. I could only hope they understood why I did what I did.
______________________________________
(Y/N’s POV)
After watching JJ get loaded into the cop car Kie and I gif farewell to Pope and his family. I knew why JJ did what he did, he was protecting Pope, but that doesn’t mean it hurt any less watching the scene unfold in front of me. Most of the ride was spent in silence both Kie and I in shock of the nights events.
“I can’t believe he sank Topper’s boat, Kie said finally breaking the silence.
“He didn’t,” I sighed, “he was protecting Pope.”
“You don’t expect me to believe Pope sank the boat?”
“I do actually because he did.” I looked over at her, “Rafe and Topper beat the hell out of him while making deliveries, he got revenge by sinking Topper’s boat.”
“How do you know that?”
“They told me the other day before we met you and JB at the beach to go surfing.”
“Oh my god.”
“Yeah.” I sighed as her headlights scanned my house as she pulled into the driveway. “Looks like I better be going, I’ll see you later.”
“See you later,” she said as the door closed behind me.
I made my way inside the house, it was dark which tells me my parents had already gone to bed. I quietly climbed the stairs and went to my room. I laid on my bed and the night's events played back through my head. The night was going so well, until the altercation the boys had with the kooks and after that it seemed as if the tides had turned and we were destined to have a terrible night. I would give anything to still be at the outdoor movie my head on JJ’s shoulder and his arms wrapped around me, but that’s not the case here, instead I’m in my bed while he’s in a jail cell awaiting bail for a crime he didn’t even commit.
I wasn’t aware of the tears that had begun to fall down my face. I still had my makeup on and I knew my mascara was running, so I went to my bathroom to clean my face and put on my pajamas. Once I was done I came back to my bed and was getting ready to go to sleep when a tapping sound on my window nearly caused me to shriek. I turned slowly and was greeted by the blonde haired boy I’ve grown to adore. I ran over to my window opening it quietly.
“What are you doing here?” I was shocked as I scanned his features. His lip was busted up worse than it was before he had been taken away and his shirt was covered in blood that wasn’t there before.
“I made bail and I didn’t have anywhere else to go,” he said looking down shyly. “You were the only person I could come to, JB is out of town, Pope’s parents would freak if I showed back up, and Kie’s parents would kill me if I even stepped foot on their land.”
“Why couldn’t you go home?” I asked curiously as I reached out to help him through my window.
“I couldn’t take any more of this,” he said as he gestured to his face and bloody shirt.
“Your dad did this?”
“Yep he’s not too happy with me,” he chuckled.
“I’m so sorry,” I said pulling him into a hug, I felt his body relax against me. “You don’t deserve this, you were protecting a friend by taking the fall for him and your dad beat you up.” The tears were welling in my eyes and a rogue tear fell quickly to his shoulder.
“Hey don’t cry,” he said, pulling away and putting a gentle hand on my cheek. “I’m used to this kind of thing. I’ll be good as new in a few days.”
“But you shouldn’t be used to abuse,” I cried.
“Hey, hey, hey, calm down babe before you wake your parents up.” He said pulling me into a tight hug again. “I’m ok, I’m here with you and I’m ok.”
My body continued to shake with quiet sins while JJ stroked my hair and whispered soothing words to me. Once my breathing returned to normal I pulled away and looked up at him. “We need to get you cleaned up and doctor those cuts.”
“I can’t really get cleaned up,” he said looking down at me. “I don’t have any extra clothes.”
“I do,” I smiled pulling away and walking to my dresser. I dug him out one of my old oversized basketball t shirts and a pair of old basketball shorts. I made my way to my bathroom, placed the clothes on the back of the toilet, laid out a towel and washcloth for him, and cut the water on for him. “You’re all set,” I said walking out of the bathroom.
“Thank you Y/N, it means a lot to me,” he smiled walking passed me.
“You’re welcome.” I made my way to my bed and laid in it while JJ showered. My exhaustion began to was over me and I struggled to keep my eyes open. Soon darkness washed over me and I was dead to the world, I was woken up by a pair of strong arms wrapping around me and lifting me up. “What’re you doing?” I ask groggily.
“Trying to fix your blanket so you don’t get cold.” He whispers in my ear. He then places me back on my bed and pulls my blanket up over my tired body.
“JJ?” I ask yawning
“Yes ma’am,” he responds quietly.
“Will you hold me?” I’m not sure where the sudden boost of confidence came from, maybe it’s the exhaustion. “Please?”
“As you wish,” he says climbing into my bed and wrapping his arms around me pulling me to his chest. “Why did you want me to hold you?”
“My emotions are still reeling from tonight,” I lay my head on his chest. “And for some reason when you hold me, I feel safe, comfortable even.” My vulnerability shows.
“I'm glad I can make you feel that way,” he smiles.
Oh that smile, I could get lost in it. I find myself staring at his smile at first then my eyes divert to his lips. Soon I am closing the distance between us until our lips are just millimeters apart. I can feel his heartbeat quicken under my hand as we stare at each other, lips nearly touching. The anticipation is maddening, JJ gently grabs my chin between his thumb and index finger and closes the distance between us. Our lips meet in a soft and gentle kiss, much different from our first kiss, his lips are rough and busted from the punches he took earlier in the night.
The kiss ends far too soon for my liking, “I’m sorry,” JJ says, pulling away. “I could do this all night but my lips kind of hurt.” he chuckles.
“I understand,” I smile, laying my head back on his chest. “Goodnight JJ.”
“Goodnight Y/N,” he says as he runs his hand up and down my back soothingly.
It doesn’t take long for sleep to wash over me. My eyes are tightly shut and I am on the border of sleep and awake, that place where you aren’t sure if it’s a dream or if it’s real, I can still feel JJ rubbing my back gently lulling me to sleep.
After a few more minutes he’s sure I’m asleep, he places a soft kiss to the top of my head. “I think I’m falling for you,” he whispered so softly it was almost inaudible. His body shifts as if he is getting comfortable without disturbing me, and his heartbeat soon steadies into a soft beating pattern.
There is no way he really said that, this is definitely a dream, I am off in dreamland and everything that happened after saying goodnight wasn’t real.

Homecoming Queen: A School Spirits Story
Part 2: Letting Go
Wally Clark x Reader
Part 1
Y/N is letting go of what happened to her, or so she thought, when she sees her memorial being set up she realizes she wasn’t truly letting go of her death. One person though has continuously been there since she died and is making her death bearable.
Tumblr media
4 Days After Hoco Dance
I sat in the gym and watched as people I had never seen before set things up for my funeral. They carried in flower arrangement after flower arrangement setting them up ornately. Then they set up an easel and had a large portrait of me, my senior yearbook picture to be exact. I looked perfect in that picture. My hair was curled and framed my face just right, the strand of pearls hung daintily around my neck and the black velveteen shirt hung off my shoulders slightly, the smile on my face was one of the brightest I had ever seen in a picture, I was so excited to finally be taking this picture. It’s a shame that the first time I ever saw it was at my own funeral. Finally the people wheeled in a metallic blue coffin, which could only be mine, they opened the coffin and arranged a few things seeming to make my body presentable. They finished off the set up with a framed Split River number 32 basketball jersey and then they left the gym.
I wasn’t aware that I was crying until I felt a tear fall from my cheek and land on my hands that were crossed on my lap. I thought I was starting to come to terms with my new life or should I say my death but seeing this setup brought back the stinging pain I thought I was working through. Truth be told I wasn’t ready to die, I had so many things I wanted to do after graduation. The tears kept coming, more rapidly at this point and by now I was full blown sobbing as I sat in the upper deck of the bleachers looking out at the funeral setup.
“Hey there you are,” Wally called as he made his way over to me to sit down. “Y/N what’s wrong?”
“That’s what’s wrong,” I choke out as I point to the gym floor. “I thought I was starting to accept this.”
“It takes time your death is still fresh,” he says as he wipes a tear from my face. “It’s okay to not be okay.”
“I’m sorry,” I cried as I started to lean into Wally. “I feel like all you have done since I got here is deal with my pity parties.”
“It’s all going to be okay,” he wrapped his arms around me pulling me into him. “I don’t mind your pity parties, it's normal to feel like this. I felt they same way you do right now. When I died I was depressed for weeks.”
“It’s hard to think about you being depressed,” I laughed. “You give off total golden retriever energy, you’re always so happy.”
“Golden retriever energy huh?” He chuckled, pulling me in closer to him. “You’ve been hanging around Rhonda haven’t you?”
“Only a little bit here and there,” I smiled up at him. “Thank you Wally.”
“For what?”
“For always being here and comforting me when I have one of these breakdowns.”
“You don’t have to thank me,” he stroked my arm tenderly. “Seeing you vulnerable when you have always been so strong pained me to see.”
“What do you mean?” I asked confused, “you’ve only ever seen the vulnerable me.”
“That’s not true,” he said, grabbing my hand with his. “I’ve been stuck here for.” Wally was cut off by Mrs. Sheridan’s voice echoing over the speakers in the gym.
“Thank you everyone for attending the celebration of life of Y/N YL/N.” Mrs. Sheridan spoke into the microphone on the podium.
“Do you want to get out of here?” Wally asks, “watching your own funeral isn’t easy.”
“No I need to see this.” I said standing, “maybe this will bring me closure, plus it’s my last chance to see my mama and brother.” I began to make my way down to the first floor of the gym. In the front row of chairs sat my mama and Lincoln both clad in black clothing, on my mothers lap sat my letterman jacket. Her fist clenched tightly to it as the tears rolled down her cheeks. Lincoln had his arm around her shoulder and he was doing his best to stay strong for her.
My heart crumbled seeing them like this, I sat on the hardwood floor in front of my Mama and laid my head over in her lap. I would give anything for her to stroke my hair once more and comfort me but she can’t. I laid my hand on top of hers and laid there for what seemed like forever. My mother stirred beneath me bringing me back to reality.
“In honor of Y/N we would like to officially retire her jersey.” Coach Marshall spoke into the microphone. “She was our fearless team captain and one heck of a ball player she was going places and this season was going to seal that deal for her.” He had so much faith in my abilities. “Please Ms. YL/N we would like to bestow her remaining jersey to you.”
My mother stood and my hand fell from her, I grasped for her once more but to no avail I could not touch her. In my grip though I was graced with my letterman even though my mother still held it firmly in her hands as she approached the stage. How was that possible? How could I have my jacket when she still had it in her hands?
“Thank you coach,” my mother said as she approached the podium. “Retiring Y/N’s jersey is a great honor and thank you for your kind words about her.”
My mom continued to give a speech about me but my focus had shifted to my brother. The strength he showed earlier had dissipated, tears are slowly rolling down his cheek. I have never seen Lincoln cry before, he has always been the tough one of the two of us. “You have always been an amazing big brother,” I cried with him. “I love you bubba,” I hugged him even though he couldn’t feel it.
The funeral ended shortly after my mothers speech and she returned to her seat. I slid my arms into my letterman and then I proceeded to sit in the now empty seat by my mom. “Thank you for being the best mama I could have ever asked for.” I said, wrapping my arms around her. “I sure am proud to be your daughter.” Looking between my mama and Lincoln I bared these last words, “take care of each other y’all are all y’all have left I love y’all.”
I stood from my seat and went to approach my casket, my body laid peacefully in my metallic blue casket. My mom had me dressed in her favorite dress of mine, a light blue lace dress with cap sleeves. She had my hair curled and made sure to put my class ring on my finger and my favorite necklace on me. Knowing what I knew now after the incident with my jacket I took my ring and necklace and put them on me. “You lived a good life sweetheart,” I said to my corpse, “but now it’s time to live your death.”
I turned and walked out of the gym, I had closed this chapter and now was ready to accept this new life, I was ready to accept my death and make the best of it.

Wally’s POV
I couldn’t leave the gym, I didn’t want to leave Y/N alone. So I stayed in the upper level seats and watched her at her own funeral. I watched her go straight to her mama and sit on the floor with her head placed on her mama’s lap. My heart broke for her knowing this was it. She was savoring every moment with her family. Her mama got up and made her way to the podium where she accepted the jersey of Y/N’s that wasn’t framed. She gave her speech and I watched Y/N have her moment with her brother. I watched her exchange with her brother but I listened to the speech her mama gave. She said everything I had come to know about Y/N over the years she’s been roaming these halls. She was a fierce competitor, a loyal friend, stronger than she knew, and the kindest soul to have graced these halls.
Her mama finished her speech and returned to her seat. Y/N sat next to her and spoke unheard words to her. She then looked between her brother and mama and said something else before she got up and walked to her casket where she stood for a few moments and pulled a couple things out of her then she turned and headed for the gym exit. Her chiffon train of her dress flowed behind her as she made her exit. She looked like a different person as she walked out as if she was letting go of the past and ready to move on.
I gave her fifteen minutes before I went to find her. I checked the cafeteria, the field, the library, and the halls but she was nowhere to be found. None of the others had seen her, she was nowhere to be found, I had checked everywhere. Defeated, I sat down on the floor of the hall when it hit me. I had checked everywhere but one place, how could I forget about the auditorium? That’s where we had kissed. How could that slip my mind when I was looking for her? I quickly stood up and made my way to the auditorium, once there I burst through the doors and sure enough there she sat on the stage, she was gorgeous as ever sitting in her letterman and she had changed out of her dress, she was now in jeans and a basketball t-shirt.
“You alright?” I asked, sitting down beside her.
“Shockingly yes, I made my peace.” She smiled, “I said my goodbyes to my family and my former self. I'm ready to move forward.”
“I’m happy for you,” I grabbed her hand. “You deserve to be at peace with what happened”
“Thank you Wally,” she squeezed my hand. “You have been a big part of getting me through this. You've been my shoulder to lean on and I am forever grateful.”
“I’ll always be there if you ever need me.”
“Can I ask you something?”
“Anything.”
“What were you going to say earlier about seeing me not vulnerable?” She asked softly.
“I was going to say that I had been stuck here for 30 years.” I sighed, “ I’ve seen many people walk these halls but no one has ever been like you.”
“What do you mean?”
“I’ve watched you roam these halls for four years, I’ve seen you put others above yourself even when you were falling apart.” I looked into her eyes and confusion was all on her face, “I watched you hold yourself together when your life at home was crumbling to help someone who’s problems weren’t anywhere near as big as yours. I’ve seen just how strong you are before I ever even met you.” I couldn’t tear my eyes from hers. I could see the tears welling in them. “I’ve seen how loyal you are, I’ve seen what kind of leader you are and I saw the type of person you are well before you died.”
“I don’t even know what to say to that,” she sniffled.
“I’m sorry if I upset you.” I pulled my hand away unsure of how she was feeling. “I honestly never thought I would ever actually meet you but the type of person you were caught my attention.”
“So you’ve watched me since I started going here?”
“Not in a stalker type of way,” I said standing to my feet, I had said too much and creeped her out. “I mainly watched your games and only ever watched in the halls when we happened to be in them together.” I turned to walk out of the auditorium.
“Wait,” she said as I heard footsteps approach me. “Why are you leaving?”
“I figured I creeped you out.” My head hung low, “I thought it was best if I left.”
“You haven’t creeped me out,” she said, reaching for my hand. “Things just make sense now.”
“What do you mean?”
“You’ve seen countless games, and heard god knows how many conversations I’ve had in the halls.” She chuckled, “you already knew ‘Iris’ was my favorite song before I told you when we danced on homecoming night.”
“I did,” I looked down at her. “You always listened to it before games and I overheard you tell a friend it was your favorite once.” I was extremely embarrassed but I couldn’t stop the words that came next. “I liked you, I wanted to get to know you but I knew it wasn’t possible, I never thought we’d actually be where we are now.
She looked up at me through her long lashes with a sweet smile on her face. “Are you saying you had a crush on me when I was alive?”
“I still do,” the words fell from my mouth before I even processed what I was saying.
As soon as the words escaped my lips, I felt small hands on both sides of my face pulling me down a few inches until her soft lips were on mine.
——————————————————————
Y/N’s POV
“I still do,” Wally said and I couldn’t stop myself. Both of my hands were on either side of his face pulling him down towards me. Ever since we kissed on homecoming night I have been hoping for another opportunity to do it again. Our lips touch as if I’ve taken him by surprise; he doesn't kiss me back.
“I’m sorry that was much smoother in my head,” I say as I pull away, letting my hands fall from his face.
“Don’t be sorry,” he placed his hands on my waist and pulled me into him. “It just took me by surprise is all.”
He dipped his head down to meet my lips once again. Instinctively I wrapped my arms around his neck and stood slightly on my tip toes. He tightened his arms around my waist pulling me even closer to him. This kiss was much different than the first we shared. That kiss was soft and sweet, this one was full of longing and desire.
“I’ve been wanting to do that again since our first kiss,” he said breathlessly, breaking our kiss.
“So have I,” I smiled up at him. “So you wanted to get to know me huh?”
“Yes I did,” he said, grabbing my hand. “I still do.”
“Then let’s go,” I said as I led him out of the auditorium and to a plot of land that overlooks the fields. “This is where I’d come when I needed some time to myself, it was always so peaceful here.”
“It does seem very peaceful.” He said looking around the quaint area.
“I frequented this spot often when my parents were going through their divorce.” I said as I sat on the soft grass. “This was the only place I found comfort during that time, my parents were at each others throats and Lincoln and I were always caught in the middle.”
“I’m sorry you both had to go through that,” he said, tightening his grip on my hand comfortingly.
“It’s alright, that made me who I am today and I wouldn’t change a thing.” I leaned my head on his shoulder, “so what do you want to know?”
“Let’s start off easy,” he smiled. "What's your favorite color?”
“It’s turquoise, what’s yours?”
“I didn’t know the questions were getting turned around on me,” he chuckled. “It’s blue and my favorite song is ‘Don’t stop Believin’.”
“Good choice,” I giggled. “So this one is heavy, what exactly happened to you?”
“I was laid out by a tackle in the homecoming game my senior year.” He shuddered remembering his final moments. “Coach pulled me out to rest my knee, I was sitting on the bench when my mama came down to the field, she wanted to know what was going on,” he sighed and I knew where this was going. “She convinced me to tell my coach I was okay and to get back into the game, she said I could rest when I was dead and that rest doesn’t get scholarships.” The hurt in his eyes was evident and a tear began to roll down his cheek. “Coach put me back in and I was rushing for a touchdown, I was nearly in the end zone when I was taken down, I heard a crack and everything went black. I didn’t feel any pain, but I only wished I could’ve scored one more touchdown for my mama.”
My heart was in my throat, “Wally I’m so sorry,” I choked. “If your mom would’ve just let you rest, you wouldn’t have died.”
“You’re right but you know everything happens for a reason and I’ve accepted that.” He put his arm around me, “so what’s your favorite movie?”
“Titanic and yours?”
“Raiders of the lost ark, speaking of movies, we have movie nights around here from time to time. Do you think maybe you’d want to go to one with me as my date?”
“Wally Clark, are you asking me on a date?”
I said looking up at him. “Of course I would love to be your date to one of the movie nights.”
“Hell yeah.” He kissed the top of my head. “You know I’ve enjoyed this.”
“So have I Wally.”
We sat together just enjoying each other's company until night time had fallen upon the school. “Wally, do you think we’d have gotten along this well if we were alive in the same lifetime?” I asked.
“I don’t know.” He responded, “but I’ll take this lifetime any day.” He kissed my temple.
I don’t know exactly what is going on between Wally and I. I know that I am falling for this lovable football player hard and fast, but for now I’m content with where we’re at. He makes being dead much more bearable than it would have been without him.

Homecoming Queen: A School Spirits Story.
Wally Clark x Reader
Part 2
A/N:I just finished season one of school spirits and I had this idea I kind of ran with. This is a single part story but I left it open for more parts and i could definitely be persuaded to make more parts.
Tumblr media
Split River High Homecoming week 2013
Homecoming had once again rolled around at Split River High and the festivities had just begun. I was sitting in my first period class patiently waiting for the morning announcements. They were supposed to be announcing the homecoming court during announcements this morning. This is supposed to be my year. I had been voted onto the court each year by my classmates but this year was finally the year I could be in the running to be named Homecoming Queen.
“Good morning Bandits!” Assistant Principal Hartman’s voice echoed over the intercom. “Today kickstarts homecoming week and I know we are all looking forward to our court announcement but there are a few things we must announce before then.”
I zoned out while he rambled off the announcements that came prior to the homecoming court announcement. I was lost in thought wondering if they would change things up this year for the 30th anniversary memorial of Wally Clark, our fallen football star who tragically died during this game back in 1983.
The memorial had been the same since I started attending the football games, since 2007, my brother Lincoln’s freshman season the memorial has always been a moment of silence at half time followed by a speech from his parents. It’s sad really reliving the worst moment of your life year after year, replaying that horrible moment every time you step foot in the stadium named after your son. That must be why his dad stopped coming back in 2008.
“Earth to Y/N!” My best friend Bailey snapped her fingers in my ear breaking my train of thought. “You spaced out, he’s announcing homecoming court now!”
“What grade are we on?” I asked my interest suddenly brought back to the announcements
“Sophomores about to be Juniors.”
I listened intently as each Junior Maid was announced patiently waiting for Senior Maids.
“Now for your Senior Maids,” Mr. Hartman said enthusiastically over the intercom. “Haley Johnson, Bailey Lewis, and Y/N YL/N. Let’s give a round of applause for your 2013 homecoming court!”
“We’re both on homecoming court!” I squealed at my best friend and teammate!
“Maybe a basketball girl will finally win Queen!” Bailey smiled back at me.
“Alright girls settle down.” Mr. Anderson called out, “congratulations but we have a lesson to get through.”
We ended our conversation and Mr. Anderson proceeded with his lesson. The rest of the day passed by rather quickly and before I knew it, it was lunch time. Bailey and I were sitting at our normal table with the rest of the team.
“So Y/N do you have a dress picked out for homecoming?” Sarah asked.
“I sure do,” I said showing her my phone with the picture of my dress on it.
“Oh my god you are going to look amazing!” She squealed.
“Thank you, Bailey’s dress is even prettier than mine.” I redirected the conversation.
While the rest of the team chit chatted about homecoming and their plans for the game and dance I was lost in thought about who I would have escort me during presentation at the game Friday night. My dad and mom separated 4 years ago and he moved off to Florida and has since remarried. I could try to have him come in to escort me along with mom but he would likely have an excuse as to why he couldn’t make it. Maybe Lincoln would escort me along with mom. I spent the rest of lunch lost in thought.
The rest of the week went by fairly quickly. It was a blur of dress up days to show our school spirit. Tuesday was decade day, I sported my best 80s get up. Wednesday was twin day, Bailey and I were twins in our basketball jerseys. Thursday was country vs country club and I dressed like a proper country girl. Lastly Friday was spirit day, I went all out to show my school spirit!

Homecoming game 2013
I stood with my mom and Lincoln on the track as we watched the final seconds of the the second quarter tick by. We were currently winning the game by two touchdowns. At halftime we were lined up waiting to be presented, the presentation was to take place after the memorial. This year Mrs. Clark gave her speech first. The speech however was followed with a slideshow this year, pictures of Wally flashed on the screen below the scoreboard I had never seen pictures of him before, he was a rather attractive young man. The video ended with the stadium name flashing.
“We all knew his story,” Lincoln said to me as we waited for my name to be called. “He was the football teams idol.”
“He was your idol,” I sighed, “but I can’t help but feel sad for him, he had a young life that was cut short by the sport he loved.”
“He was the best player to grace this field Y:N.”
“Yes he was but could you imagine having the future he could have had only to have your life ended by the sport you loved?” I could feel the tears pricking at the corner of my eyes. “Then every year your family has to relive that awful moment over and over?”
Our conversation was cut short by the announcer calling out my name.
“Y/N is escorted tonight by her mother Amber YL/N and her brother former state champion quarterback Lincoln YL/N.” the announcer spoke into the microphone. The crowd erupted into a roar of cheers although I’m not sure if they were for me or for the returning Split River royalty I was related to.
“Give it up one more time for your 2013 Split River Homecoming Court.” The announcer spoke as we all left the field in the choreographed manner we had practiced all week.
We made our way back to the stage set up for the court and we all took our seats.
“Did you hear the way the crowd cheered for you?” Bailey asked, “I’d say based on that you are definitely our Homecoming Queen.”
“You know they weren’t cheering for me,” I sighed. “They were cheering for Lincoln, a part of Split River royalty.”
“You don’t know that!” She scolded
“I do Bailey, he’s a state champion, I’m just his little sister.”
“You are so much more than that.” She said she popped me in the back of the head. “You are literally one of the most popular girls here, you’re friends with everyone and have always gone out of your way to do for anyone who needed a helping hand.”
“You and I both know that that doesn’t hold a candle to being a state champion around here.”
She rolled her eyes at me but let it go. Thankfully the remainder of the game passed faster than expected and I was able to escape the stadium in no time.

Homecoming Dance 2013
I walked into the gym with my chiffon train flowing behind me. I felt like a million bucks, this was my last homecoming dance and I was determined to have a good time no matter the outcome of the vote. I quickly found Bailey and the rest of our teammates and we proceeded to head to the camera line where we could take one final team homecoming picture together.
Once we finished with the pictures we made our way out on to the dance floor. The DJ had just started playing ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ by One Direction, we all sang in unison at the top of our lungs “baby you light up my world like no body else,” as we danced and jumped around. The song was fading out and the tune to a slow song was fading in when I felt a light tap on my shoulder. Turning around I was face to face with Jax Dawson, our quarterback.
“Can I have this dance?” He asked smiling sweetly and sticking his hand out to me.
“Of course,” I said taking his out stretched hand. He put my arms around his neck and placed his hands on my waste very lightly. We swayed in sync to the music and lyrics of ‘I’ll Be’ by Edwin McCain.
“You look gorgeous tonight Y/N.” He whispered in my ear.
“Thank you Jax.” I could feel my cheeks flush. “You look handsome.”
“Handsome enough I could snag a second dance later in the night?” He flirted
“We might can arrange that.” I laughed.
We danced with each other until the song faded out and a shrill screech of the microphone broke us apart.
“Can we please have our Seniors on homecoming court report to the stage?” The Principal Mrs. Sheridan called out.
I made my way to the stage my heart was beating out of my chest I was so nervous. I could literally hear my heart beating each step I took that got me closer to the stage.
Once everyone was situated on stage Mrs. Sheridan only added to everyone’s anxiety by dragging out the crowning. She started by crowning the Homecoming King, who was none other than Jax.
“No time for your 2013 Homecoming Queen,” she called into the microphone. “Drumroll please, this years Homecoming Queen is, Y/N YL/N!”
The crowd erupted in applause and I stepped to Mrs. Sheridan for her to crown me. Once the crown was secured to my head I turned back to find my best friend Bailey, “You did it,” she smiled, “I knew you had this.”
“Thanks B,” I said hugging her, “finally one of the basketball girls won.” We both laughed.
“Please give it up one more time for your king and queen.” Mrs. Sheridan called out followed by applause.
I had to stay on stage with the court and take pictures for a few minutes after the presentation. Once the pictures were done I headed to the steps of the stage so that I could get back to the dance floor. As soon as I stepped off the first step I felt my dress tug on something causing me to miss the second step and fall down the steps hitting the back of my head on the steps as I fell down them. I could faintly hear people calling my name and I could tell my hair was wet with something, I stuck my hand to the back of my head and brought it to my eyes to see my fingers covered in blood before everything went black.
I’m not sure how long I was out for but when I finally came to I had a major headache and was still on the gym floor. My vision was still slightly blurred but I could make out a male figure standing in front of me.
“What happened?” I asked groggily.
“You fell down the steps of the stage.” A sweet unfamiliar voice responded, “you hit your head on the way down.”
“How long was I out for?”
“Well about that.” The voice responded, I could listen to this boy talk all day,
“What is that supposed to mean?” I asked as my vision finally began to refocus. I was face to face with a face I had only ever seen once before, on the screen at last nights game. “Yo- you’re wa- wa.”
“Wally Clark,” he finished my sentence for me “Homecoming King of ‘83”
“That’s impossible,” I panicked. “I must be dreaming or in a comma because you’ve been dead for 30 years!”
“It’s not impossible cherry pop.” A girl with dark curly hair stated plainly.
“The only way it’s not impossible is if I’m.” I choked on the last word of my sentence.
“Dead.” Wally stated softly grabbing my hand.
“No I can’t be dead!” I whaled, “I’ve got a concussion or something.”
“Im afraid not,” a shorter boy with glasses said pointing off in the distance to a crowd of people around someone.
I pulled myself together enough to get up off the floor and see what was going on. I could see Bailey, Sarah and Jax clearly in the distance. I made my way to each of them touching their shoulders and telling them I was ok but neither of them even noticed I was there.
“They can’t see or hear you,” the shorter boy said.
“This can’t be real.” I real I sobbed, as I pushed my way through the crowd to see what the commotion was I saw my lifeless body laid out on the gym floor as one of the teachers attempted CPR.
“She’s not breathing.” The teacher shouted, “I’m going to continue with chest compressions until the EMTs get here!”
“Dispatch says they’re two minutes out,” another teacher called.
My friends were all a wreck, the sound of their sobs and cries tore through my heart like a bullet from a gun.
“She can’t be gone!” Bailey cried out. Sarah could barely speak she was crying so hard. Jax had his head in his hands and I could hear soft sobs escaping his lips. My friends were hurting and there was nothing I could do.
Within minutes the EMTs burst through the gym doors with a gurney. They rushed to the group of people surrounding my lifeless body.
“How long have you been doing compressions,” one of them asked the teacher who had been working to keep my heart beating.
“Ten minutes,” he responded.
“She doesn’t have a pulse,” the other EMT called out. “Let’s try to shock her.” They pulled out their defibrillator and proceeded to put the paddles to my chest. Shockwaves ripples through my body and I didn’t even move. They tried a second and third time with not a single movement. I was gone and I wasn’t coming back.
“Let’s call it,” one of the EMTs said. “Time of death?”
“Ten o’clock,” the other responded.
They began getting a body bag ready and I felt a hand lightly touch my shoulder. “You don’t need to see this,” the sweet voice from earlier said. I turned around and instinctively buried my head in the chest of the tall brunette football player. He wrapped his arms tightly around me as I sobbed into his chest.
“Let’s get you out of here while this is cleaned up.” He said as he ran his hand through my hair.
“Where could we even go where I won’t see them drag my body out of the school?” I sobbed
“Let’s go to the auditorium,” he started walking while he still held me into his side. “You won’t be able to see anything in there.
I didn’t say a word I simply let him lead me to the auditorium. I wasn’t ready to die. I still had so much life to live. I was supposed to go to college and play college ball. Meet a wonderful man and get married and have kids and grow old with the love of my life, I wasn’t supposed to die at my senior homecoming dance!
By the time we had made it to the auditorium my sadness had turned to rage. I was enraged by what had been taken from me. Once the auditorium doors shut I let out a blood curdling scream from the rage that was coursing through me.
“Hey, hey, hey, it’s ok,” tried to south me. “I know exactly how you feel. I felt the same way after reality finally set in. Mad at the world for what has been taken from you.”
“I’m pissed,” I cried. “ I had so much to look forward to a now it’s gone. No college ball, no love, no wedding, no kids, no growing old with the love of my life.”
“I get it,” he said putting his arm around me and pulling me to him. “I watched all of those same dreams I had die when I died on that damn football field 30 years ago.”
“How do you live with it?” I asked leaning into his embrace. I felt like I was safe sitting here with him as if not matter what he would protect me from whatever harm could come to me now.
“It gets easier,” he smiled, “eventuality the sting isn’t as painful as it used to be, that and with Mr. Martin’s help.
“Who is Mr. Martin?”
“He leads the afterlife support group we are all apart of.”
“Oh,” was all I could manage “what’s it like being a ghost?”
“It’s nothing like the movies make you think.” He giggled, “we can’t walk through walls, touch people, talk to them, or possess them.”
“So we’re really lame immortals basically?”
“Basically,” he sighed, “we still have the same needs and wants as we did when we were alive though.”
“So what we can get sick or something?”
“We’ll charley is allergic to nuts, even in death if he eats them he swells.”
“So can we still fall in love or have sex?”
“Yes and yes,” he laughed, “I just said we still have needs and wants like we did when we were alive.
God that laugh, something about his laugh was contagious. Hearing him laugh just put a smile on my pained face and I couldn’t fight back.
“I know the night didn’t go how you planned,” he said scratching his neck “but you are still homecoming Queen,” he said pulling out my crown, “and the homecoming Queen does get a dance with the homecoming king.”
“The homecoming king is still alive,” I said quizzically.
“This years king is yes but how about a king from 30 years ago?” He asked as he placed my crown back on my head.
“It would be my honor,” I smiled as I stuck my hand out to him.
“You know I never even made it to accept my crown,” he said as he took my hand in is. “I died the night before they crowned me so I never even got my dance.”
“Until now that is.” I smiled up at the handsome jock who had his arms tightly wrapped around my waist. “We don’t have any music.” I said I we swayed together in silence.
Wally began to hum the tune to ‘Iris’ by the Goo Goo Dolls then began to sing the opening lyrics. “And I’d give up forever touch you, cause I know that you feel me somehow, you’re the closest to heaven that I’ll ever be and I don’t wanna go home right now.”
I was mesmerized by how good of a singer he was and before I knew it I was lost in the song. My arms around his neck and my head lay perfectly on his chest, this moment eased the pain I felt moments before for just long enough for me to enjoy the dance.
The song had been over for a while but Wally and I still stood in the middle of the auditorium my arms around his neck and his around my waist neither of us wanting to break the comfortable space we were in.
“Wally?” I asked softly “how did you know that song, it came out years after you died?”
“I’ve been to so many of these dances over the years you can’t help but learn the songs.”
“I see well,” I sighed.
“Well what?” He asked concerned.
“You sang my favorite song very well.” I smiled.
“I’m glad I could do your favorite song justice.” He said as he let one arm fall from my waist and moved it to cup my cheek. “Do you feel better?”
“I do thank you,” I smiled as I leaned my cheek into his touch. Being in this moment felt right I didn’t pull my check away from his touch and he didn’t pull his hand away from me either we are just standing there looking into each others eyes. The next thing I know both of us are leaning into each other, within seconds his lips are pressed to mine in softest and sweetest kiss I have ever felt. His lips are soft and they feel like they were meant for mine. Moments later we break the kiss both of us breathless.
“I will never forget this night Y/N,” he smiled as he ran his thumb across my cheek bone.
“Neither will I,” I say as I reach one of my hands up to grasp the hand he has placed on my cheek.

New Girl: An OBX Story
Part VII: You Did What?
Part 6 Part 8
Tumblr media
AN: I’m sorry this update has taken so long to get out. Life has been crazy but I promise I will try to be better!!
(Y/N)’s POV
The morning light peered through a crack in my curtains stirring me from my slumber. I stretched with a groan and checked my phone to see what time it was. It was eleven, I had definitely slept in today. Before climbing out of bed I browsed through my notifications, I had missed a text from JJ asking if I wanted to come help him and Pope make deliveries for pope’s father. I replied to him then got up and started getting ready for the day.
Me: I’m sorry I just woke up still need my help?
JJ: we’re all done, but we’re hanging at the chateau if you wanna stop by.
Me: yeah I’ll come by for a bit!
JJ: cool see you then.
I was just finishing throwing on my shorts and t-shirt and began to make my way downstairs.
Once I made it downstairs I grabbed my keys, realizing no one else was home, I went straight to my car and left. The ride to the chateau went by fairly quickly and before I knew it I was pulling into the driveway of the chateau.
I walked into the chateau and there didn’t appear to be anyone inside. I made my way out to the back porch where I found JJ and Pope.
Pope did not look well. His lip was busted and he had a cut on his head above his eyebrow. “What the hell happened?” I asked worriedly.
“Rafe happened,” JJ replied sharply. “He and Topper attacked him while we were making deliveries today”
“What the fuck for?”
“Because someone pulled a gun on him and fought him the other night.” Pope said cutting his eyes at JJ.
“Man I’m sorry but what else was I supposed to do?” JJ asked.
“I’m sorry Pope, if I wouldn’t have had that argument with Rafe, JJ would’ve never had to step in and help me.” I sighed “and you would’ve never been attacked today.”
“There’s nothing to be sorry for, I got payback.” Pope smiled.
“What did you do?”
“Sank Topper’s boat,” he shrugged.
“Wait what?” I asked shocked, “did you do it or did JJ put you up to it?”
“Hey this was all his idea!” JJ exclaimed.
“You can’t blame me for asking” I sighed, “you are our resident rebel without a cause, and sinking a boat is not something you’d expect from Pope.”
“I can be a little rebellious at times.” Pope defended himself.
JJ and I looked at Pope in tandem and couldn’t stop the laughter that fell from our lips. “Pope you are always our voice of reason, rebellion is not a part of who you are.” JJ smiled at him “you have too bright of a future to be rebellious you’re gonna go places man.”
I couldn’t help but nod in agreement with JJ Pope had an extremely bright future he was always looking forward to college and trying to keep everyone out of trouble, that’s why his revelation was so shocking. I hadn’t known him long but I knew him long enough to know this.
“So where is John B and Kie?” I asked changing the subject.
“They’re at the beach catching some waves,” JJ said. “We were getting ready to go meet them when you text back so we decided to wait for you.”
“For what?” I asked curiously “it’s not like I can surf plus I don’t want to keep you guys from catching your waves with them!”
“Oh come on it’ll be fun, plus I’m sure Jay would be willing to teach you how to surf.” Pope sent a devilish smile in JJ’s direction.
“I think I’ll just watch you guys surf,” I smiled. “I don’t think surfing is really my thing. However I appreciate you offering.”
———————————————————————
It wasn’t a long drive to the beach so we all took my jeep down there. The ride was pretty eventful, from Pope and JJ fighting over who rode shotgun to the groans when another Morgan Wallen song played on the radio. I gleefully sung along each time one of his songs came on the radio only to pick with them even more.
Once we arrived at the beach, I was greeted by Kie and John B, both walking up to me and wrapping me in a tight embrace.
“We weren’t expecting you to come out today,” John B said as he hugged me “but it’s a pleasant surprise to see you!”
“JJ and Pope asked me to go make deliveries with them this morning but I was still asleep and so we met up before they came out here.” I smiled as we broke apart from the hug.
“So (Y/n) can you surf?” Kie asked.
“Definitely not!” I laughed. “I’m more of a softball and basketball kind of girl.”
“You played softball and basketball back home?” John B asked.
“I did, I was all-district and parish in both for three years.” I smiled.
“You must be really good.” Pope smiled.
“I don’t know if I’d go that far,” I laughed, “I was decent. Enough about me why don’t you guys start catching your waves.”
“You’re not gonna come with us?” John B asked.
“I’m gonna watch you guys from here.” I smiled, “I’ll only slow y’all down.”
The quartet took their boards and ran off to the waves while I took my seat on the sand and watched them do what they loved. They were all amazing surfers and completely in their element in the water. Wave after wave rolled in and each time one of the pogues rode out the wave flawlessly.
I put some music on on my phone as I laid my head on my knees and watched my friends surf. I eventually got lost in thought, I was caught up in my thoughts on how much my life has changed since I moved here, and how much I missed Louisiana and my friends back home. The pogues reminded me so much of them and up until now I didn’t realize just how much I missed them, I hadn’t really heard from any of them since I got here. Without hesitation I grab my phone from beside me and immediately texted my best friend Delaney to check in.
I wasn’t aware of the tears that were rolling down my cheek until there was a soft hand on my back and a familiar voice asking if I was ok.
I looked to my side to see John B sitting by me with a concerned look on his face. Without warning he took his freehand and wiped the tear rolling down my cheek away. “Is everything ok?” He repeated.
“Yeah everything is fine I just got caught up in my thoughts and got emotional,” I chuckled.
“What were you thinking about to get you emotional?” He wrapped his arm around my shoulder and pulled me into his side.
“I was thinking about how you guys remind me of my friends back home,” I laid my head on his shoulder. “I hadn’t realized until then how much I missed them and I haven’t heard from them since I left.”
“Hey it’s okay to miss them,” he pulled me in tighter wrapping his other arm around me in a tight hug. “Maybe you should call them or text them.”
“I have, I haven’t heard anything back.” I sobbed.
“It’s there loss then,” he smiled “because I can assure you we’re all glad you’ve joined our pack.”
“I’m glad I have too,” I smiled back at the hazel eyed boy.
“There it is!” He chuckled!
“There what is?” I asked quizzically?
“That gorgeous smile of yours,” he said placing a kiss on top of my head.
We sat in a comfortable silence just watching the others surf. John B still had his arm around me and my head was still on his shoulder, it was nice. We were like that for what seemed like forever before either of us spoke. “Thank you for this John B,” I smiled at him. “I really needed it.”
“Anytime, my shoulder is always open for a pretty girl to cry on,” he laughed.
“John Booker Routledge,” I said sternly, are you flirting with me?”
“Do you want me to be?” He retorted.
I rolled my eyes and slapped him playfully in response. I’m totally ok with him flirting but I would never tell him that. The rest of the day passed by in a blur and soon I was back home getting ready to climb into bed.

New Girl: An OBX Story
Part VI: Date With Disaster
Part 5 Part 7
Tumblr media

_______________________________________________
(Y/N)’s POV
It had been a few days since I had seen the pogues. I knew they were busy trying to find information on the map John B’s dad left him and the royal merchant so I stayed out of the way fearing I would only slow them down. Not to mention I needed time to myself to clear my head after the events from of the other day. I had kissed JJ and then had a moment with John B that same night. I needed to get my head in the right space. I wasn’t quite sure what I was going to do but I knew I couldn’t keep bouncing between the two of them. There was no better way to clear my head than to go out to the beach and listen to the waves while I read a book and escaped from reality for a while.
I was sitting out on a towel reading the book, Beautiful Disaster. I couldn’t help but get lost in the book and I didn’t realize I had unexpected and unwanted company until they were pulling my book out of my hand.
“Um excuse you!” I shouted, standing up and coming face to face with none other than Rafe Cameron. “I suggest you hand over my book!”
“I will when you give me a chance to apologize.” He stated plainly.
“Fine, apologize,” I agreed worrying only about my book being safely returned.
“I’m really sorry about what happened at the party that night.” He said softly. “I wasn’t myself and I never should have put my hands on you.”
“It’s fine Rafe it’s in the past just let bygones be bygones.”
“I’d like to make it up to you.”
“How?”
“Let me take you out for dinner one night.”
“Rafe I’m really not interested in going on a date.”
“It’s not a date just an apology dinner.” He pleaded, “please let me do this.”
“If I agree will you let me be and give me my book back?”
“Yes, I’ll leave you be and give you your precious book back.”
“Fine I will go to dinner with you!” I sighed, “now can I have my things back?”
“Sure,” he said handing me my book back. “I’ll see you tonight at seven, formal is the attire!” He smirked as he walked away.
“Hold on I didn’t agree to dinner tonight!” I shouted.
“You agreed to dinner! I never specified a time so tonight it is!”
After the exchange with Rafe I didn’t even want to be out anymore. I packed up my things and went straight back inside slamming the door behind me. I went straight to my room and threw myself down on my bed. I know I’m acting like a child but I can’t stand being played and Rafe fucking played me. I had a feeling in the pit of my stomach like he was up to something and I couldn’t shake it.
Without hesitation I pulled out my phone and texted the pogues in a group message. I know if something went awry I could count on them. Plus they would give me their honest opinions on the situation.
Me: Hey guys can I ask y’all’s opinion on something?
John B: Sure what’s up?
JJ: Whatcha got?
Pope: what’s up?
Kie: well yeah!
Me: I was sitting out on the beach reading today when all of a sudden someone came up and took my book out of my hand. 😡
John B: it was Rafe wasn’t it?😡
JJ: If he did anything I stg we’ll jump him. 👏🏻
John B: yeah we will!
Kie: they’re right we’ll jump him!
Pope: just no gun this time JJ!
Me: thanks for having my back guys, but he said he wanted to apologize. Begged me to let him take me to dinner as part of the apology. I said I wasn’t interested but he wouldn’t take no for an answer not to mention he was holding my book hostage. I agreed thinking I could avoid this dinner in a few days, no he’s taking me out tonight. Please tell me I’m not the only one who feels like something is off about this!😬
John B: something is definitely fishy. 🤔
JJ: I agree, you shouldn’t go alone or you should have someone who knows where you’ll be. 😳
Kie: we can always come scope things out and be there in the shadows incase things go south.🥊
Me: y’all would do that for me?🥰
JJ: yeah we would! Pogues don’t leave pogues behind, or in this case go to dinner alone with a kook.😂
Pope: we’ll be like undercover agents 😂
Me: y’all are literally the best! 😘
John B: we know! 😂
JJ: hell yeah we are!💁🏼‍♂️
Kie: we’re great we know! 💁🏽‍♀️
_______________________________________________
The day passed by way faster than I had hoped, I spent most of my time helping my mom get things hung up throughout the house and finish decorating, finally making our house into a home. We talked about the situation with dinner and she agreed to let me go only since my friends would be there watching to make sure things were okay.
I was up in my room going through my closet to find something to wear. I wasn’t trying to go all out, but I wasn’t trying to be under dressed either. I decided to go with a green floor length satin dress with sleeves that hung off my shoulders. I had wore the dress in my cousins wedding and I thought the dress was formal enough but not too flashy to wear to a dinner where I wasn’t trying to make an impression.
Once i decided on my outfit for the night, i sat down and went to work on my makeup. I decided to go for a natural makeup look. Once i was done with makeup i tackled my hair. I curled my hair and pinned it back in a half up half down style.
Although I was dressed and ready to go I wasn’t mentally prepared for the sound of my mother calling for me to come downstairs. I composed myself and made my way downstairs. Halfway down the stairs the front door came into view and there stood Rafe, he was dressed in a suit, if he weren’t such an ass, I’d almost say he looked handsome. When he noticed me it looked as if his eyes lit up. When my feet hit the hardwood of the first floor of our home, I was immediately met by the eldest Cameron.
“You look gorgeous.” He smiled stretching out his hand for me to take.
“Thank you,” I smiled back taking his hand. Great I made an impression.
“I will have her home no later than 11 Mr. and Mrs. Landry.” Rafe said as we made our way to the door.
“Take care of my daughter son.” My dad said sternly.
“Yes sir,” Rafe replied, and with that we were out the door.
The sound of my heels on the concrete driveway was all that was heard as Rafe lead me to his Range Rover. I was pleasantly surprised when he opened the door for me, I hadn’t expected that from him. I climbed into the luxury vehicle and quickly fastened my seatbelt. Maybe tonight wouldn’t be a complete train wreck, maybe Rafe could be civil. Rafe quickly climbed into the car and the engine roared to life and soon we were backing out of my driveway.
“So what kind of place around here requires a formal dress code?” I asked breaking the silence.
“The country club.” He said back dryly. That’s the Rafe I know and despise.
“You didn’t have to go all out for an apology Rafe.” I said as I reached for his hand trying to get the Rafe who was in my home five minutes ago back. “You could have brought me a burger and fries from McDonald’s and said sorry. That would have been significant enough for me.”
“So this is too much for you? I try to be nice and you tell me you’d prefer McDonald’s?” He shouts jerking his hand away from me.
“That’s not what I was saying at all, it’s a lovely gesture.” I sighed, “I just meant you didn’t have to go so extravagant to apologize Rafe. I’m not like your friends or even the girls you date. The finer things in life don’t matter to me. It’s not about how much you spend, but rather if your apology is genuine.” I smiled at him and it looked as if he was softening back up.
“I take it that’s why you love your little pogues?” He snapped.
“Rafe I like the pogues because they remind me a lot of my friends back home.” I rolled my eyes. “They’re genuine people and they don’t care if my family is rich or not, they like me for me.”
“If that’s what you think,” he snarled. “They’ll prove you wrong eventually.”
“Rafe I really thought tonight was going to be ok at the house, but right now this is ridiculous.” I shook my head. “You’re being an ass because I said you didn’t have to go all out to apologize, I meant no disrespect I simply meant I’d have accepted your apology regardless as long as it was genuine.”
“My apology is genuine (Y/N) I’m truly sorry for what happened at the beach that night.” His voice cracked, “I’m sorry for how I treated you at the wreck, I’m going all out because I was a jerk, I put my hands on you and that was wrong. Let me prove to you I’m not as awful as you think I am.”
“Fine let’s start over and I will give you a chance to prove me wrong.” I stuck out my hand to him. “Good evening sir I’m (Y/N) Landry and you are?”
“Rafe Cameron miss Landry.” He said taking my hand and planting a kiss on the top of it. I meant for him to shake my hand not to kiss it.
“Pleasure to meet you Mr. Cameron.” He chuckled in response.
In the moonlight I swore I saw a slight blush creep across his cheeks. The rest of the ride was spent in a comfortable silence. I was optimistic that Rafe would prove me wrong. Maybe he wasn’t so bad, with that being said, my stance on dating him wouldn’t change. He wasn’t my type, but that doesn’t mean that we couldn’t be civil or even friends.
Soon we pulled up to what I could only assume was the country club, cars littered the parking lot. They must be extremely busy or they have an event going on. I couldn’t shake the feeling that Rafe had tricked me as we pulled into a parking spot. He quickly put the car in park and killed the engine hopping out of the drivers seat before I could even undo my seatbelt. He was at my door opening it for me in seconds. He held out his hand to help me out of the car and I’m thankful he did, the minute my heels hit the gravel of the parking lot I was off balance and nearly fell. Once I was steady, Rafe gave me his arm to take as we walked in, I obliged and we made our way to the door of the country club.
Once inside I quickly excused myself to the restroom, so that I could send my location to the pogues. I dropped a pin in the group chat and went back out to find Rafe. He was still standing near the bar where I left him, only he was joined by Topper, Kelce, and I believe Sarah.
“Fancy seeing y’all here.” I said as I joined the group of kooks at the bar.
“It’s Topper’s birthday so of course we’d be here.” Sarah smiled. “We’re more shocked Rafe managed to convince you to come with him tonight.”
“Oh are y’all?” I asked putting on my best clueless act. “Why’s that?”
“With the whole incident at the beach, we didn’t think he could convince you to be his date.” Topper said plainly.
“He apologized,” I smiled. “So I figured I’d give him a chance to prove he’s not a complete ass,” I lied. I would never let them know he manipulated me.
“He’s not all bad.” Kelce smiled. I only smiled in response. My blood was boiling.
“Rafe can we go find a table?” I asked sweetly putting on my best innocent voice.
“Of course,” he smiled, “we’ll see you guys later.”
He reached his arm out for me to take but I declined, after my rejection he simply lead the way to a table. He found a table off by itself and took a seat I sat across from him. We sat in silence for a few moments before he broke the silence.
“You’re really going to sit there and not speak?” He asked coldly.
“What do you want me to say?” I retorted. “You manipulated me.”
“I did no such thing!”
“Bull shit you brought me to a fucking birthday party to parade me around as your date but convinced me we were going to dinner!”
“Okay so I wanted to have the most beautiful girl in town on my arm at a party is that a crime?”
“It is when you lie!”
“Would you have come with me if I hadn’t?”
“No Rafe I wouldn’t have!”
“Why not?”
“Because this isn’t my idea of fun! When I told you the finer things don’t matter to me I meant it! I came because I thought you were apologizing to me, not going to parade me around a party as your date! I truly thought we might could attempt to be friends but I don’t know now Rafe!”
“I truly am sorry!”
“No you’re not!” I shouted as I stood from my seat and turned to walk away.
I made my way through the country club until I reached the door. The night air hit my face as I stepped out and that is when I realized I had tears rolling down my cheeks. I wasn’t crying because I was upset, I was crying because I was so irate. I was nearly to the parking lot when I felt a hand wrap around my wrist, I turned to see none other than Rafe standing there gripping my wrist.
“Let me go!” I yelled.
“Not until you listen to me!” He yelled back.
“There’s nothing to listen to Rafe!”
“Yes there is!”
“What?”
“(Y/N) I think you are gorgeous, I wanted you to come with me tonight, I knew if I asked you’d never agree, that’s why the apology dinner was what I used, I meant that apology on the beach and in the car, and I’m sorry for lying to you.” He sighed. “Please come back inside and let me show you I’m not the guy you think I am.”
“No Rafe I’m sorry,” I said turning on my heels. He grabbed my wrist and pulled me into him wrapping his free hand around my waist.
“Please?” He begged letting go of my wrist and wiping the tears from my face.
“Fine.” I agreed hoping he would let me go. He continued to hold me for a few more moments, until Topper’s voice came ringing through the night. I was never so thankful to hear his voice than I was in that moment. We made our way back inside where the next few hours were spent with Rafe drinking with his friends and me keeping to myself aside from the occasional dance with Rafe. I would occasionally text the pogues and check in, they were hanging out in the parking lot making sure I didn’t need back up. After I had sat alone for about an hour I decided it was time for me to go. I made my way to the door and passed by Topper in the process.
“Where are you going?” He asked.
“Home, I’ve sat alone long enough.” I replied.
“Rafe’s not going to be happy about that.”
“I really don’t care. I’m ready to go home so I’m leaving.” I said and walked out the door of the country club.
I wasn’t a few feet from the country club when someone grabbed me and jerked me around.
“Where are you going?” Rafe asked.
“I’m going home,” I said plainly.
“No you’re not.”
“Yes I am.” I spat, “I’ve sat here by myself long enough, while you parade around with your friends!”
“First I’m not your type, then you want my attention all night? You can’t have your cake and eat it too!”
“That’s not it at all Rafe!” I rolled my eyes, “you tricked me, brought me here under false pretenses so you could parade me around as your date then left me on my own to get drunk with Topper and Kelce!”
“You’ve made it very clear you’re not interested in me!” He shouted, “so yeah I’m going to leave you be and be with my friends”
“I still was willing to be friends with you.” I sighed, “just because I’m not interested in dating didn’t mean I wasn’t willing to give you a chance at a friendship.”
“That would never work!”
“Why not?” I questioned him sternly?
“Because I can’t be around you without wanting to do this.” He said as he cupped my cheek and pulled me into him crashing his lips into mine. I was shocked, Rafe Cameron just kissed me, kissing Rafe was nothing like kissing JJ. There were no sparks flying this time, I honestly felt nothing but guilt well up in my stomach. Guilty that I didn’t have the same feelings for Rafe and guilty that John B and JJ likely saw the whole debacle.
“I’m sorry Rafe.” I said pulling away from the eldest Cameron.
“Sorry for what?” He asked.
“I’m sorry that I don’t feel the same way.” I sighed running my hands through my hair. “I just don’t look at you that way, and I’m sorry.”
“No but you look at your precious pogues that way!” He snarled, his eyes turning almost black.
“No thats not it either.” I explained.
“Yes it is! You want one of those worthless pogues! When I could give you everything you ever wanted!” He shouted as he backed me up against the exterior wall of the country club.
“That’s not it Rafe. We are two completely different people who come from different backgrounds!” I shouted back, “all you’ve ever known was the rich life, I knew a life much like the pogues before my family got to where we are now.”
“You think you’re so much better than me then!” He shouted angrily.
“I never said that at all Rafe!”
“You’ve implied it!” He shouted as his fist collided with the wooden exterior of the country club.
The crunching sound under his fist caused a shriek to leave my lips unexpectedly. Truth be told it’s outbursts like this that is why I would never be able to look past when it came to Rafe. There would always be a fear of when he may take it too far. His hand pulled away and he cocked it back as if he were going to hit me or the wall again when he was suddenly jerked off of me by JJ.
“Get out of here (Y/N)!” JJ shouted as he and Rafe squabbled.
“What about you?” I asked
“I’ll be fine! Just go John B is waiting!”
I couldn’t move my feet. I didn’t want to leave him behind. I watched as he and Rafe tousled on the ground trading punches back and forth.
“Go!” JJ shouted breaking me from my trance. I turned and took off toward the parking lot. I was nearly to the Twinkie when I had to stop and see if they were still fighting. As I turned around I saw what appeared to be JJ’s silhouette running towards the water. Pope must’ve been waiting there for him. With the weight lifted off my shoulder I finally made it to the Twinkie only to be greeted by the handsome brunette pogue.
“Are you okay?” He asked concerned.
“I’m fine,” I sighed. “Thank you for being here tonight.”
“No problem, what the hell happened?”
“He got pissy I was leaving, after I was manipulated and left alone half the night.” I said shaking my head. “He kissed me and I told him I didn’t feel the same. Then he flipped out when I told him we came from two different backgrounds and he said I thought I was better than him.”
“He’s an idiot, if I were out with a girl half as beautiful as you’d, I wouldn’t leave her side and I definitely wouldn’t act like a dick.”
“You all act like I’m some goddess or something.” I rolled my eyes “I’m just me, plain and ordinary.”
“There is so much more to you that we see than you think.” He replied.
The remainder of the ride to my house was spent in silence. As we pulled in my driveway the headlights of the Twinkie illuminated my front door. The brakes screeching as we came to a stop broke the silence between John B and I.
“Thank you,” I said unbuckling my seatbelt and getting out.
“You’re welcome,” he said as he met me on the passenger side of the Twinkie. “Let me walk you to your door.”
“You don’t have to.”
“I want to.” He smiled, “try to end your night on a small good note.”
“Thank you JB,” I said leaning into his shoulder as we walked together. “What did you mean earlier?”
“About what?”
“The comment about seeing more to me than I think?”
“It’s nothing.”
“It must be or you wouldn’t have said it.”
“Really it’s nothing (Y/N)”
“Fine I’ll drop it.”
“Goodnight,” I said and turned to open my front door.
“Wait.” John B said as he touched my shoulder.
“What is it?” I asked turning on my heel.
“You want to know what I meant?”
“Yes I do.”
“Fine,” he said as he placed both hands on the side of my face and leaned into me. Our lips merely centimeters away. His hazel eyes glanced from my lips to my eyes. The tension was unbearable.
“We’ll are you going to tell me or” I was cut off by his lips meeting mine. His lips were rough and scabbed. The kiss was soft and gentle nothing like the kiss with JJ and far more enjoyable than the kiss with Rafe earlier in the night. The butterflies in my stomach were raging when he pulled away.
“I meant that you are beautiful inside and out.” He said smiling. “That you are so much more than your looks.” He kissed my cheek and turned to walk away. “Goodnight (Y/N).” With that he left.

New Girl: An OBX Story
Part V: The Compass & Redfield
Part 4 Part 6

————————————————————————————————————————
(Y/N’s) POV
I was startled awake by the sound of my phone going off. “Hello?” I groaned answering the phone?
“Good morning sleeping beauty.” John B’s voice chimed through the phone.
“Good morning,” I responded. “Can I ask why you’re calling me and waking me up?”
“I was calling to tell you that you need to come to the chateau.”
“The what?”
“My house, JJ and I have some information on the guys who shot at us yesterday.”
“How?”
“Don’t worry about that right now we’ll explain when you get here.”
“First off I have to know where here is.”
“I will text you my address.”
“Ok, let me get dressed and grab some food and I’ll be there.”
“Ok, I sent you my address, we will see you shortly.”
“See you shortly.”
I ended the phone call and rolled out of bed. I went to my bathroom to brush my teeth and fix my hair. After I ran my straightener through my hair a few times, I walked to my closet and found some jean shorts and an older t-shirt. If there is one thing I’ve learned being around John B and his friends it’s that you never wear any of your good clothes. You never know what you’ll get into. I put on some foundation and mascara and then made my way downstairs.
My mom was in the kitchen, the smell of bacon filled the house. I saw a plate of eggs and bacon in the frying pan. “What’s for breakfast mama?” I asked
“Bacon, eggs, and biscuits and gravy.” She smiled.
“You’ve gone all out this morning.”
“I just cooked what was requested by your dad.” She smiled. “You’re all dressed where are you going?”
“John B called and asked me to come over.”
“Oh” she sighed questioningly. “What for?”
“His dad has been missing for quite some time and he thinks he has found some clues to his disappearance.” I lied.
“Oh poor thing, I had no idea his father was missing.”
“I didn’t either until he told me yesterday while we were on the boat.” I sighed, “he’s getting everyone together to tell us his findings.”
“Oh okay.” She smiled, “are they still planning to come eat?”
“Absolutely!” I laughed.
“How long will you be gone?”
“I’m not sure, hopefully not too long.” I smiled “I will text you when I’m heading home.”
“Okay.”
I quickly made a plate of breakfast and sat down to eat. I quickly ate my eggs and bacon and took my time eating my biscuits and gravy. My moms biscuits and gravy were the best and I wasn’t in that much of a hurry that I couldn’t enjoy them. As I was taking my last bite my phone vibrated on the table. I looked down to see a text message come through.
John B: Where are you?
Me: Just finished breakfast leaving now.
John B: Hurry!
Me: Don’t get your boxers in a twist I’m coming!
John B: 👍🏻 see you in a few.
I got up from the table, took my plate to the sink and hugged my mom bye before I walked out the door. I climbed into my Jeep putting my key in the ignition and putting John B’s address into my GPS and cutting on my music. I put the car in gear and drove out of my driveway.
________________________________________
“You have arrived at your destination.” My GPS called out as I turned into the driveway of what is known as the chateau. I put the car in park and killed the engine. As I was getting out of the car I noticed there was a figure waiting on the porch. Although their back was turned I could tell by the brown curls flowing out from under the hat it was John B. I made my way to the porch where he was standing.
“It’s about time you got here!” He laughed as he embraced me in a tight hug.
“I’m sorry I had to get dressed and eat before I came.” I rolled my eyes.
“Remind me if I ever take you out to tell you to be ready an hour before you should be!”
“Oh so you’re planning on taking me out sometime?”
“Uh maybe.” He stuttered, “that is if you want to.”
“We will see.” I smiled playing hard to get. “So what is so important that you had to have me here immediately?”
“Follow me.” He said leading me into his home and to the back porch where I was met by the gaze of Kie, Pope, and JJ.
“It’s about time you got here!” JJ joked.
“Look John B woke me up out of a dead sleep.” I said crossing my arms. “I had to get dressed and grab some breakfast.”
“I see you have on some makeup, which of us are you trying to impress?” He asked.
“Bless your heart.” I laughed, “you think I put on makeup to impress you? That’s real cute JJ. If you must know I’m trying to impress one of the kooks”
The porch was filled with laughter from everyone except JJ. He didn’t particularly find my joke funny.
“Hey Jay, pick up your jaw off the floor or you’re gonna be catching flies.” Kie laughed.
JJ straightened up and ran his hand across his face. I could tell he was still reeling from my comment. If he only knew I would choose him or John B over any of those boys from Figure 8. I like a guy who’s down to earth and doesn’t have things handed to them, they work for it. I was snapped out of my thoughts by the sound of JJ’s voice.
“And we’re right outside against the house like this.” JJ says leaning against the side of the house. “All I hear is bam! bam! bam! Paint was getting knocked off the wall from the inside! Look at this” he says making his way over to where we’re sitting. He leans down and starts scratching his scalp.
“JJ that’s dandruff.” I said rolling my eyes at him.
“That’s paint flakes babe!” He says.
Did he just call me babe? Should I call him out or pretend I didn’t notice. Before I had the chance to say anything he was back telling the story.
“At that point, I was waiting for death.” He sighed.
“So you saw the guys who shot at us?” Pope asked.
“Yeah,” JJ replied
“Did you get a good description of them?” Pope asked. “Anything we can bring to a police report.”
“Yes anything is helpful!” Kie exclaimed.
“Burly.” JJ responded.
“Burly?” Kie and Pope asked in unison.
“That’s not very helpful,” I chimed in.
“Okay, like the type of guy that works at dad’s garage.” JJ said.
“Yeah, No.” we all said in unison.
“I can tell you with complete confidence,” he said lighting a cigarette. “These guys are killers.” He took a drag. “They’re square groupers.”
“Like narco square groupers?” Pope asked, “like Pablo Escobar?”
“Yeah man.” JJ sighed.
“What did they look like specifically?” Pope asked.
“I don’t I wasn’t taking mental pictures!” JJ shouted, “I was under duress!” His voice squeaked. “But I can tell you the way Ms. Lana was screaming, these guys are serious hombres.”
“Why do they want the compass?” Kie asked.
“The things a piece of shit.” Pope stated, “no offense John B.”
“The office.” John B said to no one in particular.
“What?” Pope asked.
“My dad’s office.” John B said walking inside. “He kept it locked so no one could steal his Royal Merchant research and since he left I’ve left it how he kept it.
He lead us to a locked door that I am assuming is his dad’s office. He opened the door and went inside where he found a cork board full of pictures. The pictures on the cork board were all of men in John B’s family who had owned the compass at one point and died in freak accidents leading the compass to be passed down to the next in line.
“My dad said there was a secret compartment that soldiers would hide notes in the compass.” He said taking the compass apart. “That’s my dad’s handwriting.”
“How do you know?” Pope asked.
“The Rs.” John B said.
“What’s that say?” JJ asked.
“Redfield.” I replied.
“What’s Redfield?” Kie asked.
“Besides the most common name in the county?” Pope asked sarcastically?
“Maybe it’s a clue?” John B asked.
“If it is a clue it could be an anagram.” Pope said.
“Yes you’ll need paper,” John B replied.
Different words starting with one of the letters in Redfield were being thrown about the room while John B searched through some drawers.
Looking out the window I saw a black truck pull into the driveway. “Guys were we expecting anyone?” I asked.
“No why?” JJ questioned.
“Well someone is here.” I pointed out the window.
Everyone made there way to the window. “Guys is that them?” Kie asked with worry in her voice.
“John B I told you.” JJ said walking away from the group.
“Look at me.” John B said chasing after him, “where’s the gun?”
“The gun?” JJ responded, “I, I can’t.”
“You don’t have the gun?” Kie asked, “the one time we need it?”
“It was in my backpack,” JJ gulped. “It’s on the porch.” JJ took off out the door to go get his gun.
“John Routledge!” An unfamiliar voice called out.
JJ came running back in the room empty handed and shut the door. “They’re on the front porch, I couldn’t get it.”
Crashing noises followed by shouting came from the other rooms of the house.
“We have to get out of here.” I said.
Pope, John B, and I leaned against the door to keep it shut while Kie and JJ tried to open the window. The next thing I know someone is kicking the door. Instinctively I grab John B’s hand bracing myself for another kick to the door when Kie and JJ get the window to finally open.
One by one we file out of the window, John B was finishing closing the window when a shot rang out through the house, one of the men must have shot the door to get it open. We made our way over to the chicken coop to hide. Looking out the side of the coop we were able to see the two men walking out of the house carrying boxes of John B’s father’s research. The men were about to get in the truck when the rooster started freaking out.
“Oh god.” I sighed.
“Someone shut it up.” JJ whisper yelled.
“What do I do?” Pope asked.
The smaller of the two men heard the commotion and started walking towards the coop. John B and I leaned back against the wall attempting to avoid detection. He grabbed both mine and Kie’s hand in an attempt to calm our nerves. JJ had caught the rooster and a snapping noise filled the coop. I placed my free hand over my mouth to keep from making any noise and tears began to roll down my cheeks. I felt movement next to me as JJ sat down and placed his arm around me as he pulled me into his side.
“It’s going to be okay.” JJ whispered
“I hope so,” I whimpered, “you broke the roosters neck.”
“I had to keep ya’ll safe.” JJ sighed, “I didn’t have a choice.”
“Ratter what are you doing?” One of the men called. “Let’s go!”
When we heard the truck pulling out of the driveway everyone in the chicken coop breathed a sigh of relief and then we began crawling out of the coop. Kie and I were both visibly shaken and in desperate need of some cleaning up. She grabbed my hand and we made our way into the chateau to the bathroom. I looked at my reflection and saw the trail of black running slightly down my cheeks Kie was nearly identical to me.
“You know,” she said wiping her face gently, “they both like you.”
“What?” I asked stunned, “are you referring to John B and JJ?”
“Yes, they both have a thing for you, JJ just seems to act upon it a little more than John B.”
“So the plan yesterday was because he liked me?” I wiped my cheeks gently, “John B grabbing my hand to comfort me today?”
“Yes (Y/N) you came into town and something in them clicked.”
“JJ isn’t as JJ as normal and John B he’s actually opening up which is something I haven’t seen since his dad disappeared.”
“Oh.” I said trying to process everything that has been laid out for me.
“I don’t want to see either of them hurt so please don’t string them along.”
“Kie, I’m not like that, it’s been done to me before and I do not do people like that.”
“I just don’t want to see them get hurt.”
“Kie I completely understand that.” I sighed, “to be honest I think they are both very attractive and great guys, but I don’t know if I could choose between them, for fear it would ruin a friendship between them and for me with the other one.” I put my head on my hands. “Not to mention, I’m not sure if I’m ready to get into something with someone just yet.
“I understand that,” she smiled. “I just thought you should know, and to be honest I haven’t seen you do anything to string them along. I’m just protective they’re like my brothers.”
“I get that and thank you for letting me know.” I hugged her.
We made our way out to the porch only to be greeted by a pretty blonde girl.
“Have you guys seen John B?” She asked, “I need to talk with him.”
“He’s out at the shed,” Kie replied and the girl sauntered off.
“Who was that?” I asked.
“Sarah Cameron,” she replied rolling her eyes. “JB worked for her dad but he fired him today because he found out about the scuba gear.”
“So she’s Rafe’s sister,” I said pointedly. “She must be just as bad as him.”
Kie remained silent as she walked to meet Pope and JJ around back. I followed her but I won’t lie felt a weird sense of jealousy rush through my body when I thought about John B being alone with Sarah.
We reached the back porch and I was met by JJ’s sea blue eyes and in that moment that jealousy dissipated. I took a seat in the hammock and listened to the group talk about Sarah for a few minutes. I looked down at my phone and realized what time it was.
“I should be going guys,” I said lifting myself up from the hammock. “I need to get home and help my mama with dinner. I’ll see y’all this evening.”
“Here let me walk you to your car.” JJ shot up.
“You don’t have to do that,” I said to him as he walked towards me.
“I know I don’t have to,” he said putting his arm around my waste. “I want to.” The flip my stomach did when those words left his mouth nearly made me throw up.
“If you say so.” Was all I could manage to say back to him.
Once we arrived at my car he walked me around to my door and proceeded to open it for me.
“Well aren’t you a gentleman,” I giggled.
“I try miss.” He said in his best British accent.
“You know you’re kind of cute when you’re being all gentlemanly.” I said without realizing what had just come out of my mouth.
“I would say you’re cute all the time but I’d be lying.” He said as my heart sank deep into the pit of my stomach.
It took all I had in me not to cry instead I turned on my heel to get into the jeep. Here I was thinking we were having a moment and he just completely ruined it. I felt a hand around my wrist pull me and turn me around to look at JJ. Our faces were now inches apart and he had this look on his face as if he had just ran over a puppy.
“You didn’t let me finish what I was going to say.” He sighed, “saying you’re cute would be a lie because you are not cute (Y/N), you’re beautiful.” As the words fell from his lips my heart nearly beat out of my chest. He called me beautiful. In that moment I couldn’t help but want to kiss him.
Without hesitation I closed the gap between us bringing our lips crashing together. He tasted faintly of cigarettes, but I didn’t mind, the way his lips molded to mine felt like they were meant for each other. He brought his hand to my cheek cupping my face, deepening the kiss. When we finally pulled away we were both breathless a small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
“I’m so sorry about that.” I said franticly, “I really should be going.”
“You don’t have to apologize.” He smiled.
“Bye I will see you later.” I said climbing into my Jeep and putting it in gear. JJ waved as I backed out of the driveway that small smile still tugging at the corner of his mouth.

John B’s POV
I was out in the shed when I heard the sound of approaching footsteps. I was secretly hoping it was (Y/N) but when I turned around I was greeted by Sarah Cameron.
“What are you doing here?” I asked venom in my voice.
“I came to apologize about dad.” She sighed.
“You mean apologize for getting me fired?”
“John B I didn’t tell him I swear!”
“Then who did?”
“I don’t know! But I know I kept my promise!” She shouted, “it’s not my fault you stole our gear!”
“I was trying to find clues to dad’s disappearance!”
“Look John B I understand why you did it. I just came to say I was sorry and yo tell you it wasn’t me who ratted you out.” She said turning on her heels to walk away.
“I’m sorry, the situation is just frustrating.” I sighed, “thank you for not ratting me out.”
She just smiled and walked out of the shed. As she was making her way out I saw (Y/N) and JJ standing by her car. It looked like he had said something that had upset her. She had turned away and went to get in her car when she was stopped by JJ grabbing her. He turned her around to face and began speaking to her. I could see her body language soften as he spoke. They were unbearably close, close enough they could kiss. She starred at him for a few moments letting his words sink in, and that’s when it happened. They kissed, I wasn’t quite able to tell who initiated it but there it was. They were lip locked right before my very eyes.
I didn’t know what to think, my emotions were running high and I was starting to see red. I was jealous, jealous of a kiss that could have meant nothing but I couldn’t stop myself from marching over to where JJ stood.
“What the hell was that?” I seethed.
“Dude calm down,” JJ said raising his hands defensively. “She initiated the kiss I didn’t.
“Yeah but you sweet talked her!”
“I simply told her she was beautiful. I didn’t sweet talk her or make any kind of move you’re thinking I did!”
“Hey hey hey!” Pope shouted getting between us. “Calm down you two! It’s not worth fighting over!”
“Pope is right!” Kie shouted as she walked over, “I’m sorry JB but having Sarah Cameron come here didn’t help your case.”
“What is that supposed to mean?” I asked.
“I saw the look on her face when Sarah asked her where you were.” She rolled her eyes, “it’s possible she believe something is going on there.”
“Oh so I’m second best?” JJ asked.
“No Jay, I’m saying maybe Sarah showing up solidified who she had feelings for.” Kie responded
“What do you mean Kie?” I asked
“JB you’ve been less flirty with her, Sarah shows up makes her think that’s why you are t flirty, JJ has been showing her that he has feelings, what I’m saying is Sarah sent the wrong message.” She rolled her eyes.
“You women are too confusing,” JJ sighed.
Kie just rolled her eyes and went back to the porch. I was lost in thought, Kie was right Sarah could have sent the wrong message and then the fact that I haven’t been trying near as hard as JJ likely didn’t help my case.
I needed some time to myself and I asked everyone to leave for a bit and they obliged. Once everyone was gone I had gone back to my dad’s office and started looking through his things. On a cork board was a name and that name finally made the clue in the compass stick.
________________________________________
JJ’s POV
I was still mind blown from that kiss so I was zoning in and out of the conversation. We were on our way to (Y/N)’s for dinner and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous about seeing her after that kiss.
“So I was doing some digging in dad’s office when I stumbled across something.” John B proclaimed.
“What?” I asked.
“Redfield, I thought it was a place.” He said proudly, “Redfield is a person.”
“Who?” Kie asked.
“My great-great grandmother Olivia.” He stated, “her maiden name was Redfield.”
At that point I had zoned back out and missed a few key pieces of the conversation until (Y/N)’s name was mentioned.
“After dinner I’m going to ask (Y/N) if she wants to go with us to the crypt.” John B said plainly.
“I’m sure she’ll go,” Kie replied. “We haven’t scared her off yet.”
Kie was right we haven’t scared her off yet and I sure hope we don’t. She fits in with us really well. Not to mention she’s everything I’ve ever wanted in a girl. I had zoned back out and missed the rest of the conversation. When I came back to earth we were turning into (Y/N)’s driveway and suddenly my heart started racing and I was a ball of nerves.
The Twinkie came to a stop and soon we were filing out of the van. Once we reached the ornate wooden door John B knocked and we were soon greeted by Mrs. Landry. (Y/N) was truly the spitting image of her mother, they both had gorgeous dark brown hair and emerald green eyes.
“Come in y’all.” She smiled stepping to the side of the door.
“Thank you Mrs. Landry,” John B smiled as he entered the house.
A heavenly aroma filled the air as we walked into the house, “Mrs. Landry the gumbo smells amazing.” I said as I inhaled the wonderful aroma.
“Why thank you!” She smiled, “Scott, (Y/N), we have company!”
Mr.Landry came from what I’m assuming is the living room and (Y/N) was making her way down the stairs. She had her hair pulled up in a ponytail and minimal makeup on, even when she wasn’t trying she was beautiful.
“Hey y’all,” she said once she made it to the first floor.
“Hey,” we all chimed in together.
“Welcome to our house,”she giggled. “We’re still getting situated so ignore the mess.”
“What mess?” Kie asked sarcastically , “I see no mess.”
(Y/N) just giggled and she lead us to the dining room for dinner.
“Take a seat wherever y’all want,” she said as she was sitting down. John B took the seat on her right and I sat down in the seat on her left. Mrs. Landry came through the dining room door with a large pot and sat it in the middle of the table. Mr. Landry followed with a smaller pot and then soon they disappeared again only to return with another pot and a stack of bowls.
“Alright y’all, the big pot is the gumbo,” Mrs. Landry smiled. “The two medium pots have rice and potato salad. Dig in!”
Everyone made their bowls of gumbo and quickly sat down and began eating, not a word was spoken until everyone was done eating.
“That was amazing Mrs. Landry.” Kie said.
“Why thank you!” She smiled at her, “I’m glad you all liked it!”
“That was the best meal I’ve had in a while!” John B exclaimed.
“Thank you for inviting us.” I said
“Y’all are very welcome!” She exclaimed, “y’all are always welcome here.”
“Do you need any help with cleaning up mama?” (Y/N)
“No dear y’all go hang out.” Mrs. Landry stated.
“Yes ma’am,”(Y/N) replied as she made her way out of the dining room as the rest of us followed.
________________________________________
(Y/N)’s POV
We were sitting out on my back porch and John B was filling me in on his theory about the etching in the watch.
“I believe it has something to do with my great- great grandmother.” He said, “Redfield was her maiden name.”
“So it’s a person not a place?” I asked.
“I think so, we’re going to check out the Redfield crypt later tonight. Do you want to come?”
“Yeah I will come.” I smiled.
“Great!” He smiled.
We sat around the back porch and talked for a little while longer until nightfall. Once it was dark they decided it was time to go to the crypt and see if we could find anymore clues. Because of the events of the last couple of days I was honest with my parents about what we were doing. I explained to them that John B found the compass and the inscription and that he believes it has something to do with his great-great grandmother so we were going to check out her grave. Surprisingly they were ok with it seeing as I was upfront and honest with them. My dad just asked that I take something with me to defend myself in the event of danger.
We loaded up in the Twinkie and made our way to the cemetery. I was sitting in the back seat with Kie and Pope when Kie caught me off guard.
“So you and JJ kissed?” She asked.
“I truly don’t know what happened.” I sighed, as I thought of our conversation at the chateau. “I wasn’t trying to cause any issues, I swear.”
“I get it sometimes things just happen, but John B saw and was not the happiest.”
“He had Sarah Cameron here. I thought they had something going on.”
“Ha!” She chuckled, “no she came to defend herself that she didn’t rat JB out.”
“Oh” I sighed.
She opened her mouth to speak but was cut off by JJ claiming we were pulling up at our destination.
We all filed out of the Twinkie and made our way to the Redfield crypt. We walked through the cemetery until we found a crypt that had overgrown plants and vines around it with the name Redfield in large letters visible on the outside.
“Pope help me with the door.” John B commanded.
Pope obliged and they attempted to open the crypt’s door but to no avail when JJ jumped in to help. The three of them continued pushing on the door until a hissing noise caused everyone to back away. Out of a crack in the cement wall of the crypt came a snake tumbling to the ground.
“That’s a cottonmouth!” JJ and I said in unison.
JJ began barking at the snake, prompting John B to tell him to hush. Followed by JJ arguing that snakes are afraid of dogs. I looked over to Kie and she rolled her eyes, this must be a common occurrence between the two boys.
“John, we’re not getting in there.” Pope said defeated, “we should probably just go.”
“I can get through,” Kie said blankly.
“What?” The boys asked
“You think your gonna fit through that hole?” John B asked.
“This is about your dad,” she said. “Honestly I don’t believe in it but you deserve to know the truth.”
“I’ll go with you, Kie,” I said.
John B had a grateful expression on his face as he started tearing down the overgrowth on the door with JJ and Pope joining in. A pathway was finally cleared and John B ordered JJ to help Kie and I into the crypt. He squatted against the wall lacing his fingers together for us to step on and him to help lift us up.
“Remind me what we’re looking for.” Kie ordered before going inside.
“You’ll know when you see it.” John B responded.
Once we were inside Kie and I began looking around. John B was anxious you could tell by how many times he checked in on us. Kie went in one direction while I went in the other, slowly scanning the crypt.
“Did y’all find anything?” John B asked?
“Oh my god!” Kie exclaimed.
“What?” Everyone asked at the same time.
Kie said nothing all she did was pull an envelope out of a crevice and hand it back through the hole. She then made her way back out to the other side and I followed suit. Once we were back with the guys John B examined the envelope.
“Holy shit,” he cried. “This is from my dad.”
The joy John B felt was short lived, in the distance you could hear a vehicle approaching.
“Code red!” JJ called out. “Square groupers!”
“Go!” Kie ordered. With that we all took off running away from the crypt and the approaching vehicle. We shut off our flashlights and pressed our bodies against the wall of a crypt nearby.
“It’s the guys who robbed your house,” JJ whispered.
“Do you think it’s them?” Kie asked leaning over the corner of the wall.
“They have a gun.” JJ said.
“Screw this,” Kie said as she stood up and took off running to the gate. We all followed her and climbed the gate to get to the Twinkie. We made it to the van and quickly left the cemetery and went to the chateau.
Once we made it to the chateau we all went inside and circled around John B to see what was in the envelope. He quickly ripped the tab off the envelope and pulled out a map and a tape recorder. He hit the play button and the room was filled with the gruff voice of an older man.
“I hate to say I told you so,” the voice stated. “But I told you so and you doubted your old man. At this moment you’re probably riddled with guilt over our last fight, but hell I didn’t expect to find the merchant either.”
The look on John B’s face when he heard his father’s voice again broke my heart. He continued to listen to the message and when it was finally over he walked away. Once he made it to the doorway he leaned against the frame of the door and began sobbing. My heart was breaking for him, listening to the tape with us and not his father meant that his father was no longer alive and I couldn’t imagine how he must be feeling.
“Big John did it!” JJ shouted.
“Can you not?” Kie scolded him.
I walked over to John B and wrapped my arms around him. His sobs shook his entire body and I couldn’t help but hold on to him tighter.
“I’m so sorry, John B.” I whispered.
He didn’t respond instead he turned around to face me and buried his head in my shoulder. I held him and ran my hands through his hair trying to comfort him until his sobs subsided.
“Thank you.” He said lifting his head from my shoulder. “For just letting me break down for a few minutes.”
“You don’t have to thank me.” I smiled. “I know you were upset and I’m okay with being a shoulder to lean on when it’s needed.”
“Thank you again.” He smiled.
“You’re welcome, let me know if you need anything.”
“I will.”
When we turned around the rest of the group had disappeared. I guess they stepped away to give John B time to process what he had just learned about his father.
“Where is everyone?” I asked turning around and nearly smacking into John B.
“Maybe out on the dock.” He said as he chuckled.
“What’s so funny?”
“You almost jumped out of your skin when you turned around.”
“I didn’t realize you were right there it took me off guard.”
“I’m sorry,” he laughed “but seeing you a little scared was pretty funny.”
“Wow remind me never to be nice to you again.” I said turning around, “since you’re making fun of me now.”
“Come here,” he said grabbing my wrist and spinning me around. “I was only picking with you. Thank you for being my shoulder to lean on earlier.”
“I guess I can forgive you.” I giggled.
“Good,” he said wrapping me in a hug and kissing the top of my head. “Come on let’s go find the others.”
We made our way outside where we heard Kie, Pope, and JJ talking. We followed their voices to the dock. Once we reached the dock they engulfed John B in a group hug. Each of them expressed their condolences to him. We all sat in silence for a while until it was broken by JJ?
“How much was it again?” He asked.
“Four hundred million” Pope replied.
“Alright let’s talk about how we’ll split the money,” JJ said. “I think I deserve a bigger share since I’m the only one who can properly protect us.”
“No,” Kie and Pope said together.
“What are you doing with your share?” Kie asked Pope.
“I’m going to pay for college in advanced,” He said. “What about you Kie?”
“I just want to make a double album.” She said happily.
“I know what I’m gonna do,” JJ chimed in. “I’m gonna get a big house on Figure 8 and go full kook. What are you going to do (Y/N)?”
“I don’t know if I deserve a cut,” I said honestly, “but I’d use the money to open my own animal shelter. What about you John B?”
“To going full kook.” John B smiled and raised his drink in the air.
“To going full kook.” We all cheered and raised our drinks to meet his.
We sat on the dock talking for a little while longer until we were nearly falling asleep.
“I really should be getting home guys.” I said as I stood to my feet.
“So should I,” Kie agreed. “I can give you a ride she said.”
“That’d be great.” I smiled.
We gathered our things and hugged the boys goodbye and made our way to Kie’s car. The ride home was quiet we were both too drained to talk. Her car pulled up my driveway and she let me out, I thanked her and made my way inside. My parents were already asleep so I went straight to my room. I took a shower and got ready for bed. The second my head hit my pillow I was out, my dreams filled with images of JJ and John B.

John B’s POV
(Y/N)’s front door swung open and out walked an older woman who could be (Y/N)’s twin, she must be her mother. I understand where (Y/N) got her looks from. Her mother was a beautiful woman she had dark brown hair that hung well past her shoulders and mesmerizing green eyes just like (Y/N)’s. She was followed by a tall man, I’d say he was likely 6’4, he had light brown hair and blue eyes.
(Y/N) followed behind her parents, she was the perfect mixture of her parents. She was wearing jean shorts and a tank top, I could see the straps of her swimsuit tied behind her neck, I could see the light bruising on her neck from where Rafe choked her. It infuriated me that he put his hands on her, but she was okay and that was all that mattered.
“Good morning y’all” (Y/N) said as she walked up to the Twinkie, “this is my mama Stephanie and my dad Scott. They wanted to meet you guys.”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you Mr. & Mrs. Landry,” I said as I got out of the Twinkie, and stuck out my hand to shake theirs. “I’m John B. Rutledge.”
“Nice to meet you,” Mr. Landry said, “thank you for what you did for our daughter.”
“You don’t have to thank me sir.” I smiled.
“From my understanding we have to thank you and JJ,” Mrs. Landry chimed in, “can we meet the rest of your friends?”
“Guys come meet Mr. & Mrs. Landry,” I called through the window. They one by one filed out of the van. Kie introduced herself first, followed by Pope and finally JJ. Mr. and Mrs. Landry were very kind, they were nothing like the kook parents I had ever met.
“It was nice to meet y’all,” Mrs. Landry smiled, “please come by for dinner tomorrow night, I’m cooking gumbo and we would love to have y’all as our guests.”
“Yes ma’am,” we said in unison.
“Alright mama they’ll be here tomorrow night,” (Y/N) smiled. “Now we’re gonna head out, I love y’all”
“We love you too,” her parents waved. “Be careful please.”
We all climbed back into the Twinkie and got situated before I pulled out of (Y/N)’s driveway.
“So what are we doing out on the boat today?” (Y/N) asked as she crossed her arms over the back of the seat.
“We found this sunken boat we’re going to go explore,” I said looking at her in the rear view.
“John B is going to explore the boat, we’re just the look outs,” Kie sighed.
“He was only able to hijack one set of scuba gear from Ward,” JJ rolled his eyes. “So we’re stuck surface side making sure no one catches him.”
“What do you mean?” (Y/N) asked.
“The sheriffs office is looking for this boat too,” Pope stated, “but John B thinks he can find evidence to help find his father on it.”
“So we’re about to hinder a police investigation?” (Y/N) sighed.
“Only if we get caught,” JJ said putting his arm around her shoulder.
“Y’all are absolutely fucking crazy.” (Y/N)’s accent got thicker as she talked.
“We won’t let anything happen to you,” I smiled.
“That’s not what I’m worried about,” she sighed. “I’m worried about getting arrested.”
“Don’t worry,” JJ smiled, “we have a plan.”
_______________________________________________
(Y/N)’s POV
We had finally arrived at the dock after we spent the last 10 minutes listening to JJ’s idea on how to evade detection from the sheriff if they showed up. From how everyone reacted JJ must always be the one coming up with crazy plans. But this plan didn’t seem that bad, it was actually kind of believable.
“So you guys really think they’ll buy JJ’s plan?” I asked.
“We can only hope,” Kie replied”
“Hope you’re a good actor that is,” Pope laughed, “we all know JJ could never pull a girl like you.”
“Hey you guys know that’s bull!” JJ shouted.
“He does seem to pull all the tourons,” I laughed
“Those tourons aren’t nearly as pretty as you.” He whispered as he walked past me.
Did he just call me pretty? No I must’ve misheard him. There’s no way he just called me pretty. I shook off the statement and climbed into the boat and took my seat.
“How far out are we going?” I asked.
“Not too far,” John B looked over at me, “maybe 20 minutes.”
“Oh that’s not bad then,” I stretched out on my seat and laid back to relax for the ride.
_______________________________________________
The sound of a splash startled me awake, I must have dozed off on the ride. I sat up and looked around the boat, Kie was the only person missing.
“I tied my shirt to the anchor chain,” Kie said as she surfaced from the depths. “It’s about ten feet down, that’s where you need to do your safety stop.”
“Keep an eye on this,” Pope stated holding a monitor for the scuba tank. “Be sure you have enough air to decompress.”
“How much is that?” John B asked.
“It’s unclear.” Pope responded.
“Think zen,” JJ said.
“If you see a splash or see someone in the water,” I grabbed John B’s shoulder. “That means someone is here and to steer clear.”
“I got it guys,” John B said positioning himself on the side of the boat. “I’ll be back shortly.” He leaned back and into the water he went.
“Can we get some music guys?” I asked.
“What kind of music you in the mood for?” JJ asked.
“I’m not really picky,” I smiled, “I listen to just about anything.”
A familiar tune played out across the open water. Without thinking I instantly sang along to the opening lyrics of “Iris” by The Goo Goo Dolls. The sound of an engine snaps me out of my song and that’s when I see the boat approaching.
“JJ come sit with me,” I called over to him thinking about the plan.
“What?” He asks.
“Come sit with me, act like we’re enjoying each other’s company. It will add to the believability of our story.”
Rolling his eyes with a slight smile he makes his way over to me. “Is this seat taken?” He asks sitting down next to me.
“Hmmm actually yeah, it’s taken by some blonde guy I think his name is like Ray Ray or something” I laughed.
We sat there talking about random things as the boat approached. The closer the boat got to the HMS Pogue, the closer JJ got to me.
“Lean your head on my shoulder,” JJ said putting his arm around my shoulders and pulling me as close to him as he could.
“You know that’s just an excuse to get closer to me,” I teased him.
“It’s not everyday I get to cuddle up to a pretty girl.” He smiled, “so I’m going to take full advantage of this opportunity.”
Before I could say anything I was cut off by the officer in the sheriffs boat that had finally reached us. “What’re you kids doing out here, you know that marsh is closed.”
“No we didn’t know the marsh was closed,” Pope said.
“We we’re just taking our new friend out on the boat for the day,” Kie added.
“She wanted a day on the water,” JJ chimed in, “and what my girl wants she gets.” He tightened his grip on me and pulled me closer. I leaned my head over on his shoulder.
“I’m terribly sorry if me wanting to come out here is and issue officer,” I said putting on my best innocent act. “What is the marsh closed for sir?”
“We’re conducting a search out here.” The officer replied, “a boat went down, have y’all seen anything?”
“No sir we haven’t.” We responded in unison.
“Are there enough life jackets on this boat for all of you?” The officer asked as he tossed a rope over to us. “I’m going to come check.”
“I’ll tie them off,” I said taking the rope this would be the perfect way to send John B a signal. I pulled the rope as tight as I could one I got to the tie-off handle on the boat. I pulled the rope just enough to send the officer’s boat into the side of ours and overboard I went.
I resurfaced to see everyone on the side of the boat looking at me.
“Babe are you ok?” JJ asked.
“Yes,” I responded. “I guess I was just unbalanced when the boats collided and I fell in.”
I swam over to the the boat and began pulling myself back in. I was met by a pair of hands that were outstretched willing to help me back in the boat. I looked up to see JJ smiling at me waiting for me to take his hand. I smiled taking his hand and he helped be back into the boat. Once I was back in the boat JJ took a towel and draped it over my shoulders.
“Well it looks like you kids are all good but I suggest you get out of here before I get back.” The officer said.
“Yes sir,” we all said in unison.
“We’ll get our things and make our way back.” Kie said.
“Let us know if you see anything on your way out.” The officer said stepping back on his boat. In a matter of seconds the boat was out of site and John B was resurfacing.
“How’d it go down there?” JJ asked, “did you find anything?”
“Did I find anything,” John B said throwing a bag into the boat and climbing back in.
“Hey guys bogey, two o’clock,” Kie said.
“Anyone recognize that boat?” Pope asked.
“Never seen it,” Kie replied, “the marsh is closed what’re they doing out here?”
“Let’s not hang around and find out,” JJ said.
“JJ check the bowline,” John B ordered. “Pope get the stern.”
Before the guys could complete the tasks given to them by John B he had the boat in gear and ready to get out of there. As the boat was approaching a sense of urgency came across the group.
“Go into the marsh,” I stated to John B.
“Guys, they’re following us!” Kie shouted as we turned into the marsh.
“This can’t be good,” John B stated.
“Go faster!” JJ shouted.
Everything was silent for a few minutes until a gunshot rang out across the marsh followed by an array of expletives from our boat as we all hit the deck.
“Get down John B,” JJ called.
“We’re gonna die!” Pope shouted.
Gunshot after gunshot rang out across the marsh. The next thing I knew Kie had made her way to the front of the boat and grabbed a net. She threw the net overboard and the boat chasing us stalled, no doubt the net was caught in the motor. One last gunshot rang through my ears, we had narrowly escaped.
_______________________________________________
“Do you guys ever have a normal day?” I asked as I was climbing out of the boat and onto the dock.
“What’s this normal you speak of?” Pope laughed.
“I’m going to take Pope’s reaction as this is normal for you guys.” I said looking over at John B.
“It’s been the norm for us since my dad disappeared.” He said looking down at his feet. “Since he disappeared I’ve been trying to look for clues to finding him.”
Instinctively I made my way over to John B and wrapped my arms around him. I couldn’t imagine what he must be going through and my heart truly hurt for him. “I am so sorry.” I whispered, “if you need anything let me know.”
“Thank you,” he said softly returning the hug. “I just hope we’re able to find something that points me in the right direction to find him.”
“We will,” I smiled releasing him from the hug. “I have faith in us.”
“So what did you find down there?” Kie asked.
“It’s got to be money or something right?” John B laughed.
“Can we please just open the bag?” Pope asked.
“That’s a rare outburst from you,” John B stated.
“I’m sorry we almost died over this,” Pope said. “Not to mention you’re killing me with anticipation.”
John B opens the bag and pulls out a metal canister and begins trying to open it. He fiddles with it for a few seconds and then he manages to get the lid off. He turns the canister up and in his hand falls a compass.
“Wow good job everyone we found a compass,” Pope says sarcastically as John B continues to stare at the compass.
“Dude it’s not worth anything,” JJ says.
“This was my father’s” John B replies chuckling.
For a moment I saw a glimmer of hope in John B’s eyes. Although the contents found in that boat weren’t what they had hoped it was, in a way it was a treasure for John B. He had found a piece of his father, a clue to help him find him.
“How long has your dad been missing?” I asked John B.
“Nine months,” he sighed.
“I’m so sorry,” I reached out to squeeze his hand. “I can’t imagine how you may be feeling, I know it’s not easy.”
“I’m making it,” he smiled. “I’m a survivor it’s what I do.”
“It’s what we all do,” JJ said as he put his arm around John B’s shoulder. “We always keep pushing on and we have each other’s back when they need it.”
“You guys remind me so much of my friends back home.” I smiled at them.
“Tell us about home,” Pope chimed in.
“What do you want to know?” I asked.
“First of all what is this gumbo your mom was talking about?” JJ asked.
“It’s like a soup or a stew that you put over rice or potato salad and you can either make it with seafood or chicken and sausage.” I smiled.
“That sounds amazing!” John B sighed.
“You have no idea!” I laughed.
“Was your mom being serious about having us over for dinner tomorrow?” Pope asked.
“Of course she was,” I laughed. “My parents want to thank you guys for saving me.”
“They don’t have to think us,” they all said in unison.
“They do, and so do I.” I said looking down, “y’all saved my life and some of you took a beating for it.” I looked over at John B.
“(Y/N) it’s what we do,” JJ said. “We defend our friends no matter what.”
“I was so afraid I wouldn’t make any friends here but I’m so glad I met you guys.” I smiled at them.
“For a kook you’re not too bad,” John B laughed as he wrapped me in a hug.
“For a bunch of pogues y’all aren’t so bad either.” I laughed as everyone else joined in on the hug.
We sat on the dock and we all talked for a while. When the sun began to set that was when we decided it was time to get me home. The ride back to my house was pretty uneventful. The Twinkie pulled in my driveway and once it stopped I bid farewell to my friends and made my way inside. My parents were sitting in the living room when I walked in. They asked how my day was and I told them the clean version of events leaving out the crazy things. I knew if I told them we were shot at I’d never be allowed to go with them anywhere again. After speaking with my parents for a few minutes I told them goodnight and made my way up stairs to shower and get ready for bed.
Once I had finished showering, I made my way to my bed where I happily fell into the covers. It had been a long and tiring day, but I couldn’t help but replay the events of the day back over and over again. The sly comments JJ made to me today made me think there may be some kind of feelings there for me. Then to see John B vulnerable for just a few minutes it stirred something inside of me. Could I have feelings for the both of them I thought to myself as the tiredness finally consumed me.

JJ’s POV
“What the hell just happened?” I asked as I checked (Y/N) to make sure she was breathing, she was.
“She got into it with Rafe, told him she wasn’t interested and called him a pompous ass.” John B groaned as he rubbed his cheek, “she said he grabbed her and tried to pull her off somewhere and she punched him and ran away.”
“So how did you get drug into this?” Kie asked.
“She ran into me while she was trying to get away from him.” John B explained, “I tried to defuse the situation and that didn’t work out so well.”
“If you and Rafe were fighting how did she wind up being choked by him?” Pope inquired
“She tried to pull him off of me and when she did he threw her to the ground.” John B sighed “if it weren’t for her he might have killed me.”
“And that’s when I came in and got him off of (Y/N). “ I said as I picked her up and carried her to the Twinkie, “I know I shouldn’t have pulled the gun but it was the first thing I thought of to get him off of her and out of here.”
“You know there will definitely be repercussions for that right JJ?” Kie asked.
“I’m sure there will be but what else was I supposed to do?” I sighed, “I did what I thought was right in the heat of the moment.”
“Dude you saved her life.” John B said opening the door of the Twinkie for me. “That’s all that matters.”
“We really should get her to the hospital.” Kie said, “at least to get her checked out.”
“And what would we say when we got there?” I asked, “you know they won’t believe us when we tell them who truly choked her.”
“You never know they might!” Kie exclaimed.
“They won’t and you know that.” I said laying (Y/N) down on the seat and sitting next to her. “I could always call my cousin, he’s an EMT, he could check her out at least.”
“It’s better than nothing,” John B shrugged. “We all know the minute they see us bring her in they’ll think we’re responsible, it’s always the pogues never the kooks.”
“He has a point,” Pope chimed in.
“Whatever,” Kie groaned.
I pulled my phone out of my pocket and called my cousin Ricky. He scolded me and said we should take (Y/N) to the hospital. In the end, he agreed to come check her out and make sure everything was ok.
As we waited for Ricky we sat in silence. I sat next to (Y/N) and played with her hair. If the circumstances were different I’d say she looked peaceful in this state, but truly I was panicking and her looking peaceful was the last thing on my mind.
I was lost in thought as I ran my fingers through (Y/N)’s hair. It enraged me to think that this had happened to her. It made me even angrier to think that we were all off doing our own thing and no one was there with her.
“Earth to JJ.” Kie said snapping me out of my thoughts, “what are you thinking about?”
“Just thinking about how if one of us were with her,” I sighed, “this might not have happened.”
“There’s no guarantee even if we were with her it wouldn’t have happened,” John B said as he hit the steering wheel. “If Rafe was going to come unhinged it would have happened regardless of who she was with.”
“But still it might not have escalated to the point it did, had someone been with her.” I said looking down at (Y/N).
“Maybe it wouldn’t have but there’s still a chance it could have been much worse.” Pope chimed in, “we don’t know how Rafe would have acted if one of us were with her or tried to intervene before things got out of hand.”
“Pope’s right,” John B stated. “No matter how mad we are at ourselves and the situation, we don’t know if it would have been worse than it was if one of us were with her. What matters is we got rid of Rafe and she’s alive.”
As much as I hated to admit it, although I wish I could have kept things from getting to this point, the others were right we have no idea how much worse it would have been if one of us had intervened sooner. I couldn’t help the feeling of guilt that crept in though, if I wouldn’t have been off with those tourons maybe Rafe would have never approached her, then again maybe he would’ve and things would have been even worse. I was drug away from my thoughts by a slight movement under my hand. (Y/N) had moved her head slightly.
“Guys I think she’s waking up!” I shouted
“Thank god!” John B, Kie, and Pope said in unison.
“Can you guys keep it down?” A low harsh voice asked, “my head is killing me.”
We all turned our attention to (Y/N) she was still laying on the seat next to me, but she was awake and rubbing her forehead. I realized my hand was still in her hair and I pulled it away softly. I swore I saw a small smile creep onto her face.
_______________________________________________
(Y/N)’s POV
My head was pounding and my neck was sore. I laid in place for a few minutes gathering the will and strength to sit up and take in my new surroundings. I was trying to remember what happened when I felt a hand retreat from my hair, JJ had been playing with my hair while I was knocked out, I couldn’t help the small smile that crept onto my face.
“What happened?” I asked as I finally sat up, “and where am I?” My memory was a little hazy.
“Do you remember anything?” John B asked.
“I remember sitting by the fire watching you guys all have a good time and Rafe approaching me.” I rolled my eyes, “I remember going to get another drink and him following me and me telling him I wasn’t interested, but after that things are a little hazy.”
“Do you remember punching him?” John B asked.
“Vaguely.” I sighed.
“He was trying to drag you away,” JJ snarled, “you punched him and ran off where you ran into John B.”
“I tried to diffuse the situation.” John B said as he touched his cheek. “It didn’t work, we got into a fight and you tried to pull him off of me.”
“Then he pushed you to the ground and that’s when he started choking you.” JJ cracked his knuckles while he spoke. “I threatened him and he let you go. We moved you to the Twinkie and I have my cousin on his way to check you out.”
Instinctively my hands went to my throat, that explains why my neck hurt so bad. Then it hit me, John B fought Rafe for me and JJ saved my life. How would I ever repay them?
“You keep rubbing your cheek John B,” I said moving towards the drivers seat. “Let me see how bad it is.”
“It’s not too bad,” He said turning his head so that I could see his cheek. “It’ll be bruised for a couple days but I’m fine.”
“If you say so,” I grab his chin and turn his face so I can get a better look. “Thank you for trying to diffuse the situation, and taking a few right hooks for me.”
“You’re one of us, pogues protect pogues.” He smiled
“So I’m officially a pogue then?” I smiled back, “in that case my mom is cooking gumbo Saturday and would love to meet you guys.”
“If food is involved we’re in.” Kie laughed.
I giggled as I made my way back to sit by JJ, I had thanked John B and I still needed to thank JJ.
“Thank you,” I said sitting down next to him, “if you hadn’t stepped in, Rafe could have killed me.”
“You don’t have to thank me,” he said rubbing the back of his neck, “I did what was right.”
“I do have to thank you JJ! You saved my life, and I can never repay you for that.”
“You don’t have to repay me, you’re alive and that’s repayment enough.”
“If you say so JJ, I’m still thankful you saved me,” I leaned over and wrapped my arms around his neck and hugged him.
“What was that for?” He asked easing into the hug.
“My way of saying thank you.” I smiled.
Before JJ could respond a bang on the side of the van startled us out of the hug. When suddenly a guy with shoulder length curly hair, I’m assuming this is JJ’s cousin, stepped inside the van. He was carrying a medic bag, so I would assume he was an EMT.
“Where’s your friend JJ?” He called out as he made his way in the van.
“She’s right here Ricky,” he stated as Ricky made his way over to me.
“How do you feel?” Ricky asked.
“I’m ok, I have a headache and my neck is sore.” I responded.
Next thing I know Ricky is doing a full blown check up of me. He said I would be fine but I may be sore for a few days. Just as fast as he arrived he was gone.
I looked down at my phone to check the time, it was nearly 11, I should be headed home. After the events of tonight, I really didn’t want to walk back home alone though. Before I registered what I was doing I asked, “would you guys mind giving me a ride home?”
I was met by all of their eyes, Pope and Kie were shocked, John B and JJ looked at me with knowing in their eyes, “I’m sorry I just don’t want to walk back alone after what happened.”
“It’s nothing to apologize for (Y/N),” John B said putting the van into gear to drive away.
“But I do have to apologize, I drug you guys into this with my big mouth.” I cried as I wrapped my arms around myself, “if I’d have just gave into Rafe this wouldn’t have happened.”
“Don’t beat yourself up, you weren’t interested,” JJ said putting his arm around my shoulder, “and he couldn’t take the hint, you protected yourself, he’s the one who went crazy.”
“But still, I got John B into a fight, and I put you in a compromising position.” I leaned into his side and whispered, “I know you pulled a gun to get him off of me.” He looked at me shocked. “I’m not going to say anything about that I swear.” He just pulled me in tigh
“Thank you,” he whispered as he pulled me in closer to him. I leaned my head on his shoulder and we sat in a comfortable silence for the remainder of the ride.
_______________________________________________
I woke up the next morning, my neck hurt way worse than it had the night before. I walked to my bathroom to check myself in the mirror. Surprisingly the bruising around my neck wasn’t too bad, it would easily be covered by makeup.
I changed out of my pajamas and put on a pair of yoga pants and a T-shirt. I went to the bathroom and brushed my teeth and pulled up my hair then I went to work covering the bruises on my neck.
I grabbed my phone and checked it before I walked out of my room. I had texts from all 4 of the pogues checking to see if I was okay. I quickly replied to each of their texts and made my way downstairs.
I was halfway down the stairs when a voice stopped me dead in my tracks. “Your daughter punched my son for no reason.” The voice said. I’m assuming this was Ward Cameron.
“I can assure you (Y/N) wouldn’t have punched him without probable cause.” My dad replied.
“Well she did,” Ward snarled, “he tried to talk to her and she punched him, I think it’s because of those kids she’s been hanging out with.”
“I can guarantee (Y/N) didn’t punch him unprovoked.” My mom said, “I think if you’re done bad mouthing my daughter you should leave.”
I heard their chairs slide across the floor and I retreated back up the stairs until Ward was gone. I was fuming this man just came in my house and made me the bad guy when his son couldn’t take no for an answer. I waited until the front door closed before I made my way downstairs. It was time to face the music.
“Mom, dad,” I said walking into the kitchen, “I heard Ward Cameron here and we need to talk about what he said.”
“Yes we do need to talk about it.” My mom said turning to look at me, “did you punch his son?”
“Yes I did but not without reason.” I sighed, “I didn’t do it for no reason.”
“Then tell us your side of the story,” my dad said calmly.
“Well,” I said taking a deep breath. “I was sitting by the bonfire enjoying my night when Rafe came and sat beside me. He told me I cleaned up nice but too nice to be on the side of the beach I was on. He meant it in a derogatory way, trying to say I was like him and his friends because I came from money.” I felt a tear roll down my cheek.
“Take your time honey,” my mom said as she hugged me.
“He proceeded to tell me my friends only like me because we have money, I told him that was the only reason he liked me, that he didn’t know me for who I was.” I wiped the tears that started rushing down my cheek. “I walked away to get away from the situation he followed, and continued to try and hit on me. I told him I wasn’t interested.”
“So like we said you had a reason to punch him,” my dad said.
“He wouldn’t take no for an answer.” I sighed, I finally had to tell him he wasn’t my type, but I said that pompous assholes aren’t my type. He didn’t like that said he gets what he wants and that’s when he grabbed me and tried to pull me away with him. That’s when I punched him, I did it to get away. I ran off and ran into John B, he tried to diffuse the situation and Rafe and he got into a fight. I tried to get Rafe off of him and he pushed me making me fall to the ground and that’s when he got on me and choked me. If it weren’t for JJ he might have seriously hurt me.”
“He choked you?!” My dad shouted. “I will kill him.”
“Daddy, please it’s not worth it I’m okay.” I cried. “It’s over with and I’m alright thanks to my friends.”
Before I talked to my parents I didn’t realize how I felt about the situation from last night. I was really not okay with what happened, but I was so thankful for my friends. I was about to text them and thank them again when a text from John B came through.
John B: We’re going out on the boat today. You wanna come?
Me: Yeah sure let me get dressed.
John B: We can pick you up if that’s easier.
Me: That’s fine with me.
I went to change into my swimsuit and a pair of shorts. Once I was done I made my way down stairs where I met my parents in the living room.
“Is it okay with y’all if I go out with my friends on their boat?” I asked.
“Will we get to meet these friends before you leave with them?” My mom asked.
“I think that can be arranged.” I smiled.
“Good we’d like to thank them for standing up for you.” My dad smiled.
About 10 minutes later I heard a horn honking in the driveway. My mom and dad followed me out to meet my new friends. This should be interesting.

JJ’s POV
We had gone back to the chateau to hang out until the party. John B, Pope and I were hanging out back waiting for Kie’s shift at the wreck to be done so we could all go down to the beach together.
I was laying in the hammock thinking when all of the sudden I blurted out, “So what do you guys think about (Y/N)?” Both Pope and John B looked at me shocked.
“She seemed really cool.” Pope laughed “A little feisty based off that confrontation between her and Rafe!”
“The best part of the day was watching her put Rafe in his place.”John B laughed “did you see the look on his face when she got in his face? He’s not used to being shot down!”
“Dude tell me she’s not the prettiest girl you’ve ever seen?” I asked “I know she’s technically a kook but she’s nothing like them!”
“I’m gonna be honest,” John B chimes in, “she’s definitely the prettiest girl on the island. It makes it even better that she’s so down to earth.”
“What am I chopped liver?” Kie said as she rounded the corner of the chateau coming to the back yard. “What are all of y’all falling in love with the new girl?”
“Come on Kie, you can’t tell us you didn’t like her?” Pope asked
“I never said I didn’t like her, but these two,” she said pointing John B and I “are ready to wife her up and they just met her”
“We said she was pretty not that we were going ring shopping!” I corrected her.
“You know what I meant!” She snapped “you two both have crushes on her and now you’re going to be fighting for her.”
“May the best man win.” John B and I said in unison and busted out laughing.
We all sat and talked for a while as we sipped on our beers awaiting time to head to the beach. I texted (Y/N) and let her know how to get to our spot on the beach, and she replied back I wasn’t expecting her too honestly. There was absolutely no way I was good enough to be more than a friend to her.
_______________________________________________
John B’s POV
I was loading the alcohol in the Twinkie lost in thought about how JJ and I were both into (Y/N). Leave it to me and my best friend to like the same girl, but as we said may the best man win, the ultimate decision comes down to (Y/N)
“Is that everything?” Kie asked breaking me from my thoughts.
“Yeah I think so, we have the alcohol, wood, lighter fluid, and a lighter.” I said closing the door on the Twinkie.
“Let’s get this show on the road!” JJ shouted as he came barreling out the chateau with Pope close behind.
“Guys everyone is supposed to be at the beach party tonight can we please be on our best behavior?” Kie asked, “we don’t need any issues tonight.”
“I promised others I’d be on my worst behavior,” I laughed teasing Kie.
“Do you guys really want issues the first time we hang out with (Y/N)?” She looked at JJ and I “especially you two since y’all are crushing.”
“Oh come on Kie he was just joking,” JJ chimes in before I had the chance, “we don’t want any issues period tonight we just want to chill.”
“I for one would rather not even look in the direction of the kooks I’ve had enough run ins with them lately,” Pope stated.
“Guys chill out we won’t have any issues tonight,” I sighed, “we’re going to have a good night, no issues, no drama, just fun.”
We arrived at the beach and began pulling our things out of the Twinkie. I got the bonfire started and we all cracked open a beer while we waited on (Y/N).

(Y/N)’s POV
I had finished showering and getting dressed by seven o’clock, I wasn’t trying to go all out, I did my makeup in a simple manner and I just straightened my hair. I had on a pair of blue jean shorts and my favorite LSU t-shirt and completed my look with my converse.
By the time I was dressed I still had thirty minutes before I needed to make my way to the beach, so I decided to go downstairs and grab a quick bite to eat. We hadn’t completely settled in so I raided the fridge for something quick to warm up. I made a plate of pizza rolls and sat down to eat.
“Maybe we’ll be settled in by the weekend and I can cook dinner one night,” my mom said walking into the kitchen.
“What are you thinking of cooking?” I asked before shoving a pizza roll in my mouth.
“I was thinking, maybe a roast, jambalaya, gumbo, or étouffée.”
“You know not to give me the option,” I giggled, “I’m picking gumbo all day long if I have the choice.”
“Now that I think about it, gumbo does sound good, maybe I’ll cook it Saturday and you can invite your friends so your father and I can meet them!”
“Don’t get ahead of yourself mom,” I rolled my eyes “we may not even be friends by the end of the night I just met them today, I like them better than the neighbors but that doesn’t mean we’ll get along very well.”
“Oh please,” she scoffed “you agreed to go to this party with them and not the ones who originally invited you, although I can’t say I blame you.”
“I tell you what, we’ll see if tonight goes well I’ll invite them to dinner this weekend.” I said getting up from the table and pushing in my chair. “I really should be heading out mama.”
“Be careful and don’t get into any trouble.” She said hugging me goodbye.
“I will be careful and I promise not to get into any trouble.”

I was making my way down the beach when a glimpse of a flame caught my eye. I walked closer to the flame until I was able to make out four familiar faces, the pogues.
“Hey y’all!” I shouted as I was approaching them.
“Hey!” They shouted and waved at me.
“Welcome to our humble bonfire.” JJ said spreading his arms and spinning around.
“Such a lovely place you guys have here.” I giggled sitting down on a log next to Kiara.
“Care for a drink?” John B asked holding out a red solo cup to me.
“Don’t mind if I do!” I took the cup from him and took a sip of the golden liquid.
“You will see a slew of people tonight,” John B stated, “they all fall into three categories, the pogues and kooks obviously, but there’s also tourons. They’re the ones who are from out of town here for a week or so on vacation.”
“So this is going to be a big deal tonight?” I asked
“They always are.” JJ laughed. Oh god that laugh, it was so captivating.
_______________________________________________
People started crowding onto the beach and before I knew it there were hundreds of people around. I was sitting on a log by the fire sipping on my beer as I watched some tourons attempt to flirt with JJ and John B. It didn’t appear that they were successful in catching their attention though. I brought my cup to my lips and finished off the last sip.
I was mentally preparing myself to get up and go to the keg to get a refill when I the log shift as if someone sat next to me. I didn’t think much of it, thinking it was just one of the pogues until I heard the person speak.
“You clean up nice.” The voice said, “too nice to be hanging out on this side of the beach.
“What is that supposed to mean?” I snarled at the smug man sitting beside me. Rafe Cameron got under my skin with how he thought he was better than everyone.
“What I meant by you clean up nice is that you look really beautiful tonight (Y/N).” He said scratching his neck, “not that you didn’t look good earlier today, you’re just breathtaking tonight is all.” He was laying it on thick.
“Thanks but that’s not what I was talking about. What did you mean by I clean up too nice to be on this side of the beach?”
“I meant that this side of the beach is for the pogues, you’re one of us you should be on our side of the beach.”
“With all do respect Rafe, I actually like this side of the beach better.”
“You know you’re one of us and you belong on our side of the beach, the pogues only like you because you have money.”
“How is that any different than why you like me Rafe?” He didn’t have a rebuttal to that he sat with his mouth agape shocked. “Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to refill my drink.”
I got up from the fire and made my way to the keg, I was refilling my cup when I looked up and saw Rafe approaching me again. ‘This boy does not give up’ I thought to myself. Being kind was getting me nowhere with him, he was not getting the hint at all.
“You just don’t give up to you?” I asked as he approached the keg.
“When I see something I want and like I tend to get it.” He smiled, “I don’t give up easily.”
“Rafe you know nothing about me, other than my family has money.” I rolled my eyes
“Of course I do, I know you’re the prettiest girl on the island.”
“That hardly counts Rafe, in this whole conversation you have yet to pick up that you don’t impress me.” I sighed “you’re so focused on playing the money card with me that you have yet to realize that’s not the way to get me to like you.”
“Please,” he scoffed, “you know you belong with people like me and not the trash of the cut. They only like you because you have money, the minute they get what they want from you they’ll drop you.”
“As opposed to what you’d do?” I snarled, “Rafe you are only interested in me because I’m a new shiny toy for you, I know guys like you the minute you got what you wanted or someone new came along you’d drop me in a heartbeat.” I turned on my heel to walk away.
He grabbed my wrist as I went to walk away pulling me back to him. He wrapped his hands around my waist and looked me in the eye as he said, “let me show you how wrong you are.”
“You already have Rafe, I overheard your conversation with Topper and Kelce as I walked away. You had already planned to try to get with me over before you even met me.” I said wiggling out of his grasp, “then you were a pompous ass when you did meet me, I’m sorry but you’re not my type and never will be.”
“You bitch!” He shouted, “no one calls me a pompous ass and gets away with it.”
“Well I just did!” I yelled back “you act like you can treat people like shit just because your family has money, and you expect people to fall at your feet, well that’s not the type of person I am.” I pointed my finger in his chest as I got in his face, “and I suggest you learn to leave me the hell alone!”
Before I could say anything else he grabbed me by the shoulders and a sinister smile formed across his lips. “You think you get to talk to me like this and everything is going to me just fine?” He asked as he grabbed my face and made me look at him. “You don’t get to embarrass me twice in one day and get away with it you got that? I’m going to teach you a lesson, one you’ll never forget.”
“You aren’t going to do shit,” I spat jerking my head out of his grasp, “you may scare a lot of people but you don’t scare me Rafe!” I turned to walk away once again and this time he grabbed my arm with such force I thought he’d dislocated my shoulder.
There was a shooting pain in my arm when he pulled on me again and I knew then that I was in trouble. My big mouth and not being willing to stand down to anyone has done it again and this time I don’t think I can get out of it.
“Let me go!” I shouted digging my heels into the sand to no avail.
“I don’t think so!” He growled.
“Dammit Rafe, I said let me go!” Just the he stopped dead in his tracks and turned to get in my face. This was my opening, my chance to make a run for it. As soon as he turned around I punched him square in the nose with my free hand. He whaled in pain letting go of my arm and grabbing his nose. As soon as I was free I made a run for it, I had about 30 seconds to get away before Rafe was over the incident and would come after me. I was searching the beach looking for any of the four familiar faces I had come to know when suddenly I ran into someone. I knew that mess of brunette hair anywhere.
“Hey watch it,” he said turning around “(Y/N) what’s wrong?”
“It’s Rafe,” I panted “we had another encounter and this time it was nasty.”
“What do you mean?” John B asked concerned.
“I mean I called him a pompous ass and told him I wasn’t interested!” I shouted, “and when he didn’t get what he wanted he was determined to teach me a lesson and was trying to drag me away until I punched him and ran off.”
“You bitch!” I heard a shout come from behind me.
“(Y/N) get behind me,” John B instructed. “I will try to talk some sense into him.”
“Get out of my way John B!” Rafe snarled.
“No Rafe just leave her alone and let her enjoy the night.” John B said calmly.
“She fucking punched me in the nose!” He shouted, “she doesn’t get to treat me like that and get away with it.”
“She does if she was given a reason to.” John B stated.
“Excuse me?” Rafe scoffed.
“You heard me.” John B shrugged.
In the blink of an eye the two boys were throwing fists at each other’s faces. The sound of flesh on flesh each time a punch was thrown rang throughout my ears. Before long a group of people had crowded around the two fist throwing boys shouting “fight.”
In one swift motion Rafe threw a punch that sent John B to the ground. He immediately climbed on John B and began punching him in the face relentlessly. I had to do something if I didn’t get Rafe off of him he would certainly kill John B. Without thinking about it I ran and grabbed Rafe by the shoulder and tried pulling him off John B.
Grabbing Rafe must have worked because his focus went from John B to me. He pushed me off of him and I stumbled to the ground. Before I was able to get up Rafe was on top of me and his hands were on my throat. I was clawing at his hands trying to get free before unconsciousness took over. Just before I was about to black out I heard a clicking noise and a familiar voice say, “let her go or I swear I will blow your head off.” I could hear other shouts but couldn’t make them out and just like that things went black.

_______________________________________________
“(Y/N) come on it’s time for us to get on the road, we have a long trip ahead of us” my mother yelled as I grabbed my bag and walked through the halls of the home I had spent the last 6 years of my life in for the last time.
The sky was still black as I made my way out of the home and onto the porch, stopping at the steps to turn and take one more look at the house that built me. My heart ached to think that I was leaving my life here behind and those I had grown to love so much. Moving wasn’t the issue, with my father’s career and how he worked his way up in the industry, we had moved a few times but we had never left the state of Louisiana, that is until now. My father had worked in the oilfield for as long as I could remember he had worked his way from the bottom all the way to the top where he was now Vice President of the oil company he had spent most of his life working for. The company had decided to expand its horizons, branching off from the gulf coast and moving east. We were packing our things and heading to North Carolina, the Outer Banks to be more specific for my dad to try and get things set up for rigs to start drilling off the coast of the Atlantic again.
“Honey come on your father is ready to get on the road!” My mother called from my dads GMC Denali. I hadn’t realized I was still standing on my steps looking at what used to be my home as tears rolled down my cheeks. “We have a 15 hour drive ahead of us and you know your father likes to be moving before sunrise.”
“I’m coming” I said as I wiped the tears from my face and turned on my heels leaving my home behind me.
“I know this is a hard transition to make sweetheart but you will love your new life in North Carolina” my mom said as I climbed into the passenger side of the truck.
“I don’t know about that mom, I’m a Louisiana girl through and through this is my home and I never thought I’d ever leave here” I sighed
“I know you did but your dad has to do what is asked of him if we want to continue to live the comfortable life we have had the blessing of living for the last few years” she reached over and grabbed my hand “you will settle in nicely once we get there, the new house has beach access sweetie and I know how much you love the water.”
My mom wasn’t wrong, I loved the water but that wasn’t a good enough excuse for me to pack up and leave the life I’ve known behind. As I watched my dad pull out of our driveway in the U-Haul with my Jeep in tow behind it I couldn’t help but reminisce on all the good times I had in the small town of Houma. I was going to miss this place more than anything. _______________________________________________
Light flooded my eyes as I groaned. “Hello sleepy head” my mom chuckled “you’ve been asleep for a while.”
“How long have I been asleep” I yawned
“A few hours”
“A few hours?” I looked at the clock on the radio. “Mom it’s noon I’ve slept for 6 hours!”
“I know you and I know you didn’t sleep one bit last night, so I left you alone.”
“You’re not wrong I struggled sleeping last night I know it’s my anxiety about moving.”
“There’s no reason to be anxious dear you’re going to be fine once we get settled in.”
“Are you sure about that mom?”
“Yes honey I’m positive, you are going to love it there.”
“If you say so,” I sighed
“Honey come on liven up” my mom smiled at me “life on the coast is going to be great and you’re going to love the new house it’s a mansion with beach access!”
I rolled my eyes but I couldn’t help but smile at my mother I loved the water but the beach was her happy place! Growing up we always vacationed to the crystal clear beaches of Florida and my mom was always so in her element when she was at the beach. I couldn’t help but giggle at her excitement. Even though we were what most people would call rich, we were still humble and seeing my mom so giddy to have a home with beach access was just adorable it reminded me that we hadn’t lost our roots even though we had been blessed with the finer things in life. My dad always preached that no matter how much money he made and no matter how many fancy things we had as he climbed the ladder of the company he worked for, we would never forget where we came from and never let the success go to our heads, and we didn’t, we were no better than anyone else and we certainly didn’t act like it. _______________________________________________
My mom got tired of driving about 10 hours into our trip so when we stopped to fill up the truck and U-Haul we switched and I took over driving so she could rest. We were about an hour out from our new home and the closer we got the more anxious I had become about our new town. I couldn’t help but wonder if I would meet people I would truly get along with. I worried that people would see us moving into our new house and see our vehicles and think I was just a stuck up rich kid, which is usually how it would go when we moved to a new town, that is until people go to know me.
I’m not you’re typical rich girl, I don’t know what it’s like to have people work for your family, cook your meals, clean your house, and wait on you hand and foot. I wasn’t raised like that and my parents didn’t believe in living like that, they came from middle class families and they stayed true to who they were and how they were raised. Once people realized I was just a normal girl making friends wasn’t hard for me, but I couldn’t shake this feeling that things wouldn’t be that easy this time!
The remaining hour of the drive went by fairly fast between me overthinking everything and listening to radio before I knew it we were pulling into the driveway of our new house. As we pulled in the driveway and the headlights hit off the exterior of the home I was amazed at how gorgeous this new house was and even more amazed at how big the house was, it was the largest home we had ever lived in. A part of me was excited to get out and see the inside of the house and the other part was not looking forward to unloading the necessities we needed to make it through the night, it had been a long day and it wasn’t quite over yet.
We spent the next hour unloading the mattresses and few other things to make it through the night. Once we were done, I took a few minutes to explore the house, I was in utter amazement, it reminded me of an old plantation home, that we had visited on a field trip for school years ago. The floors were all hardwood and the house was definitely older but it was well kept and had some updates to help bring it into the modern world, I think my mom was right I was going to love this place!
I finished exploring and went to take a shower and get ready for bed, it had been a long day and we were going to have another one tomorrow. I got out of the shower and put on my pajamas and climbed into bed. I was asleep almost instantly.
_______________________________________________
The morning light shown through my window causing me to stir from my much needed slumber. I rolled out of bed and went to my bathroom where I brushed my teeth and pulled my hair into a messy bun. I changed out of my PJs and into some comfy clothes I knew we would be busy today. Dad didn’t like to waste time and mom wanted to get settled as soon as possible.
I walked down the stairs and was met with a wide open front door and the sound of unfamiliar voices filtering through the house from outside. I heard banging coming from the kitchen area and made my way to the direction of the noise. I entered the door to the kitchen where I saw my mom emptying a box of pots and pans. “Who is that outside?” I asked
“Oh my god!” my mother jumped “you scared me, some of the neighbors stopped by to introduce themselves” she rolled her eyes “some of the social elite from around here.”
“I take it they didn’t make a good impression?”
“We’ll to start off they didn’t offer to help your dad then asked where our movers where.”
“The audacity of people,” I laughed
“They definitely weren’t raised like us.” She rolled her eyes “they definitely did not come from humble beginnings and their kids are brats.”
“Wonderful, I’m gonna go help dad try to get the truck unloaded,” I said turning on my heels and headed out the kitchen to the direction of my front door. I didn’t hear any voices coming from outside anymore so I went on out to help dad, I was in no mood to deal with any snobs today. “Hey daddy need a hand?” I asked jogging to the U-Haul
“Good morning sugar” he smiled “I wouldn’t mind a hand getting this furniture out, your mom and I got all of the boxes before you woke up and the neighbors showed up”
“She told me a little about them, they don’t seem like our kind of people.”
“They’re definitely different,” he laughed “maybe they’ll be better once we get to know them.” He was never one to talk bad on people.
“I don’t know about that.” I said as I positioned myself to lift my end of the couch
“Ever the pessimist you are,” he laughed “the neighbors sons invited you to a beach party tonight, I figured it’d be a good way for you to meet some of the kids you’ll be going to school with.”
“Daddy come on you know I am not the kind of girl that likes to party” I laughed “but maybe I’ll go out and see if I can make some friends.”
We spent the next few hours unloading the u-haul and before I knew it, it was lunch time and I was starving.
“I’m going to order us some food dear would you mind going to pick it up while your dad and I finish unpacking these boxes?” My mom asked opening up another box.
“No I don’t have a problem but I’m going to take the truck if that’s ok I can’t find my keys in the mess that is my room right now.” I laughed
“That’s fine, the food is from a restaurant called The Wreck, it’s only a few miles down the road.”
“Alright I’ll be back, I love y’all.” I said as I walked out the door to the truck. I hopped in and pulled up the address to the wreck on my phone and made my way there.
The drive there wasn’t bad it took 10 minutes to get from my house to the restaurant. I pulled into the parking lot and put the truck in park and killed the ignition before I hoped out and made my way to the door. I was almost to the door when I realized I left my wallet in the truck and had to turn around and make my way back.
I was nearly to the truck when a jeep pulled up and parked next to the truck. As I approached the truck three guys were getting out of the Jeep. They were attractive boys but something about them seemed off. As I reached for the door to open the truck one of the shouted “What are you doing trying to get into Mr. Landry’s truck you dirty pogue.”
My blood was boiling how did these assholes know my dad and what the hell is a pogue? “Excuse me?” I said turning around “first of all, I have no idea if pogue is an insult but learn some fucking manners, and second of all Mr. Landry is my dad and I can do what I please with this truck thank you very much. Where I’m from you don’t act like a pompous ass when you first meet someone.” I seethed poking my finger into his chest.
“I’m sorry you’ll have to excuse my ill mannered friend,” a blonde guy said as he made his way from the drivers side of the Jeep, “we met your father this morning and Rafe was just looking out for our neighbor. I’m Topper, you’ve met Rafe and this is Kelce.” He said pointing to the dark skinned boy getting out of the back seat.
“Well Topper I’m (Y/N) and it was a pleasure to meet you and you too Kelce,” I smiled before turning to Rafe “it was most definitely not a pleasure meeting you, learn some manners and how to speak to a lady.” I said hopping into the truck and grabbing my wallet.
“I really do apologize for my actions and how I spoke to you, it was an honest mistake.” Rafe said with a look of disappointment on his face.
“Don’t let it happen again.” I stated as I turned on my heels to walk away.
“You are coming to the beach tonight right?” Topper shouted I ignored the question and kept walking “way to go Rafe you just blew your chance with her.” I heard Topper scold him. As if he even had a chance with me a douchebag like that I think not.
“Asshole” I mumbled as I walked passed a booth with 3 guys and a girl who I assumed worked here. The girl got up as I walked by and made her way to the register to meet me “the audacity of people I swear.”
“Excuse me?” The girl from the booth asked I was so lost in thought I didn’t even realize she was at the register.
“I’m so sorry I was so lost in thought about an encounter I had outside I didn’t see you.” I apologized “I had a call in order for Stephanie.”
“We saw you,” she giggled “you seemed to handle yourself pretty well though my friends were getting ready to come help until we saw you get in Rafe’s face.”
“He had the audacity to call me a pogue, like what kind of insult is that even supposed to be?” I questioned “He claimed he was looking out for my dad and thought I was messing with his truck. He just met my dad this morning!”
“That’s Rafe for you he’s the worst of all the kooks!”
“What is with you people and y’all’s weird insults?” I asked “not to be rude but can I please get my call in order?”
“Yeah no problem, that’ll be $45.87. I’ll ring you up and you can go to the booth I was sitting at and I’ll bring the food to you and explain our weird insult.” She made air quotes with her fingers when she said weird insults.
“Okay” I said handing her my card “why are you being so nice to me when you don’t know me?”
“Because you seem like you may be one of us” she says gesturing her head to the booth of guys she was sitting at, “or at least you we may have something in common.” She handed my card back to me.
I made my way to the booth but I couldn’t help but wonder what she meant by her comment that we may have something in common. She didn’t know me or anything about me, how could she think we had something in common?
“You are the first girl I’ve ever seen stand up to Rafe Cameron and not fall at his feet,” an attractive blonde guy said jerking me from my thoughts, “it was kind of hot.” He laughed
“He was an ass and spoke to me completely wrong.” I shrugged “I wasn’t raised to take being treated like that.”
“I won’t lie we thought you might need some help when he first said something,” a brunette boy smiled “but the second you turned around and put your finger in his chest and got in his face we knew you could handle yourself, the encounter was quite entertaining to watch though.”
“He thought I was some hoodlum trying to break into my dads truck.” I scoffed “he acted like he was looking out for my dad and treated me like trash in the process.”
“So it’s obvious you’re not from here.” The dark skinned boy pointed out, “question is are you just vacationing here or what?”
“My family just moved here, my dads job brought him here to expand the company.” I sighed “I’m originally from Louisiana.”
“A long way from home aren’t you?” The girl from the register asked as she brought my food over. “I’m Kiara, by the way.”
“(Y/N) Landry, nice to meet you.” I said taking the bag of food from her.
“Likewise, this is Pope,” she said sitting down in the booth next to the dark skinned boy, “that’s JJ,” she pointed to the blonde boy, “and that is John B.” She nodded to the brunette. “And we’re the Pogues.” She smiled.
“It’s nice to meet y’all.” I smiled “so you’re telling me pogue is not an insult but rather your friend group?”
JJ laughed, “No the kooks call us pogues because we’re from the cut, well all of but Kiara, she’s a kook turned pouge.”
“So I understand who pogues are now can someone explain what a kook is please?”
“Kooks are the wealthy and elite residents of the island,” John B said rolling his eyes “and it looks like you’ve got a target on your back from the worst kook of all after your little stunt.”
“I had a target on my back before he even met me.” I huffed “I heard his friend Topper talking about how he blew his chance with me as I walked away from them. As if he ever had one.”
“How does he even know about?” Kiara asked.
“He stopped by my house with his parents this morning I guess to welcome us to the neighborhood, apparently we’re neighbors.” I rolled my eyes “so I guess that makes me a kook then?”
“You’re nothing like any of the kooks we’ve ever met.” They all said together.
“You seem much more down to earth than any of them,” Pope laughed, “how can someone from a wealthy family be so grounded?”
“I didn’t come from money.” I said simply “my dad worked his way up and busted his ass for everything we have. I came from humble beginnings and my parents nor I ever forgot where we came from. The money never went to our heads.”
“There’s a party tonight down at the beach tonight, everyone’s going to be there.” Kiara smiled, “you should come hang with us tonight.”
“You know I just might do that,” I laughed “Kiara do you have a pen?” I asked grabbing a napkin and then taking the pen from Kiara. “Here’s my number text me the details, I’d much rather hang with the pogues than the kooks.” I giggled “ I have to get this food home but it was nice to meet y’all.” I said as waved goodbye to them. _______________________________________________
I pulled back into the driveway and killed the engine to the truck. I now know what Kiara meant by the comment she made about us having something in common. She’s just like me she comes from a wealthy family but she is humble and nothing like Topper, Rafe, and Kelce. I could tell by how they acted they were spoiled brats.
“I’ve got food!” I called as I entered the house.
“It’s about time!” My mother called entering the foyer.
“I’m sorry I met some kids down at the restaurant and I was talking with them.”
“It’s fine honey I’m just giving you a hard time.” My mom said taking the bag of food from me.
“I also met our neighbors son and his friends.” I rolled my eyes “he thought I was breaking into the truck and acted all big and bad and I had to put him in his place.”
“Are you serious?” She asked “what gives him the right?”
“I have no idea, but mom the kids I met at the restaurant invited me to a party down at the beach tonight and I was hoping I could go?”
“Of course dear you can go, just don’t get into any trouble.” She smiled.
Once we finished eating lunch I went to my room to try and organize some of my things so I could get ready for the party tonight.
It was nearly 5 once I was done organizing my room, I decided to pull out some clothes to wear, I didn’t want to overdo it, so I grabbed some jean shorts and a cute T-shirt.
I was going to take a shower when my phone went off. I had two texts come in simultaneously.
Text #1: Hey it’s John B, the party starts at 8 if you walk down to the beach from your house and hang a right you’ll find us.
Text #2: It’s JJ beach parties around here start at 8. Come done to the beach and hang a right once you get there you can find us by the bonfire and the keg.
Me to both: Thank you, I’ll see you guys later!
‘I wonder why they both texted me instead of just one of them?’ I thought to myself as I made my way to the shower. I won’t lie both JJ and John B were attractive but I barely knew them and there was no way I was going to be getting myself into a relationship any time soon.
