The Way We Hurt 01
Rating: 16+ (for now)
Content Notice (this chapter): self-harm, mentions of violence
Word Count: 902
My attempt at making some sort of coherent backstory for these two (which will probably be proven wrong by the second movie). Expect small chapters of cca 1000 words every day or so (got to write while the inspiration lasts).
Title taken, as has become my habit when it comes to this pairing, from lyrics for an Escape the Fateās song; Chemical Love this time (it could be their theme song).

Iām going to be completely honest:
I actually really liked the Attack on Titan live action movie.Ā
I liked the change in environment. I liked the Fallout/Bioshock vibe it gave off. I liked the angst. I liked the fact that they gave several nods to smaller parts in the manga. I liked the fact that there were things from our time mixed in. I liked that there was a lot of blood (though it turned my stomach quite a bit) and that the titans were legitimately terrifying. There was a lot I really enjoyed.Ā
There was a lot I didnāt like, too.
I hate Shikishima with a passion. I hate that people think heās supposed to be Levi, though clearly in the movie he is Leviās exact opposite. Leviās not an ass ā well, he is, but not heās not a cruel-for-fun bastard. Levi wouldnāt leave Eren to die, walking away likeĀ āOh well, sometimes weāre just unlucky.ā He wouldnāt smile while people were being hurt.Ā
I hated that Mikasa was so absent, but, I donāt necessarily hate how her characters has been changed. Donāt get me wrongā¦Mikasa is my absolute favorite character, and she is often so grossly mischaracterized. Butā¦this change was actuallyā¦kinda nice? Not in aĀ āwow I hate how she is in the manga/animeā because I love that too ā but seriously, hear me out.
Mikasa wasnāt kidnapped as a child by three men. She didnāt meet Eren after he brutally killed her kidnappers. No, I donāt know how they met, but from how it looked, they really did care about each other.Ā
Mikasa hadnāt been traumatized as a child. She was happy. She had no haunting memories of her parentsā deaths. She hadnāt become a murderer at age nine.Ā
BUT
During the titan attack, Mikasa was almost killed. Iām assuming Shikishima came in and killed the titan before she was completely eaten, but either way, she was saved ā almost like how Eren had saved her in the series.
So, like Mikasa did with Eren, she formed a bond with her rescuerā¦ only in this universe, the person of interest returned her feelings (though I believe his intentions are anything but pure. I truly believe that the only reason why he is treating her with affection is so she can become a hardened soldier.) She feels dependant on this person, as well as protective. Sheās not necessarily being submissive ā sheās relaxed. She feels safe.
Remember, sheās not the same person she used to be, and sheās not the same Mikasa from the series. Children handle traumatizing experiences differently thanĀ teenagers and adults. This is why, I think, the outcome is different.Ā
I donāt knowā¦please donāt come at me with angry messages stating this and that. Iām seriously just talking about what Iāve observed.Ā
I DID like the fact that she was almost eaten ā mostly for angst reasons. I liked that she survived and had a bad ass scar from it. Iām hoping that with the next movie we will see her regain parts of her old personality. With everything that I assumed happened to her, Iām not surprised that sheās as cold as she is now.
I hated the stupid meaningless sex scene. What the hell was the point? OKay so Lil and Fukushi were cute, but IāM MOSTLY LOOKING AT YOU, HIANA. JEEZ, PUT YOUR BOOB BACK IN YOUR SHIRT. Thatās not even slut shaming ā she took out her boob and basically put it in Erenās hand and came onto him.Ā āWill you be the father of my daughter?ā NO GET OFF.
I could go on, but some of the smaller things I wonāt get into.Ā
Anywayā¦thatās my review.Ā

Consider the following:
Shikishima is an asshole to Eren because he only heard Mikasaās side of the story, and Mikasa happens to be hella pissed and likely didnāt paint the nicest picture of him. Shikishima probably believes Mikasaās story: that Eren left her to die. Of course he would be cruel to him.Ā
Also, when Shikishima said, āWe arenāt always lucky,ā when Eren was injured, he wasnāt simply disregarding his lifeāI think he was referencing the time that he saved Mikasa. She was lucky that Shikishima saved her before she was eaten, but not everyone is that lucky. Perhaps Shikishima saw that as deserved karma?
Of course, the watchers know Eren isnāt at fault, but Mikasa feels betrayed, and during the two years she spent with Shikishima she likely confided in him and told him about Eren, so when he finally meets him he doesnāt hold much respect for him. I think the apple scene was his way of establishing his superiority over Erenā¦I donāt think he was forcing Mikasa into submission at all. In that scene, I think Shikishima was flaunting his relationship with Mikasa in an attempt to make Eren jealous. And Mikasa, I feel, just felt awkward about being trapped between her current lover and previous one. She looked emotionally torn; Mikasa still cared about Eren despite feeling betrayed, but she was with Shikishima, a man who saved her and trained her. This is a super unpopular opinion, I realize, but this is my honest first impression of this love-triangle. Ā
Iām not saying Shikishima isnāt a creepāI think yandere!Levi is the best way to describe him lolābut his behavior toward Eren isnāt totally unfounded. Again, he only knows Mikasaās side of the story.Ā
I donāt think heās evilā¦yet. My opinion could drastically change by the second film, but as of right now I canāt hate him. Heās problematic, yes, but a lot of snk characters are. Characters like Annie, Bert, Reiner and Kenny are still likable despite their evil deeds and I think Shikishima falls into a similar spectrum.Ā
I donāt think being an insensitive jerk = evil maniac like many are implying. Honestly, I found his character refreshing. He didnāt pity the weak, heās egotistical and doesnāt like Eren because of the rivalry between them. No one else is like this in the film, so I found it realistic that we had someone who was more cold-hearted and pretentious, but also very casual about all the drama going on. I actually liked Shikishima and Iām glad they added in someone like that. It spiced up the cast, imo.

Damage Has Been Done, a ShikiMika fanfic
So, I embraced my dark side and I am going to keep shipping these two, in all of their fucked-up, unhealthy glory. This is far more movie-canon-compliant than my previous fic about them was but as I have yet to see the movie in its entirety, my interpretation of the characters is probably still off. The title comes from the lyrics of The Aftermath by Escape the Fate.

Rating: 16+
Content Notice: sexual situations, portrayal of an unhealthy relationship

about the apple scene
So, I watched that feature. I paid a special attention to that scene in particular. As there was very little talking, all I had to go on was the body language. And the very first impression I had of that scene was that Mikasa was purposefully flaunting her relationship with Shikishima in order to hurt Eren and Shikishima went along because it fit with his previous taunting of Eren. Itās very possible I missed a lot of context and that Iām projecting. It could be.
I wanted ShikiMika to be this mutual relationship of two badasses fighting Titans and finding a tiny amount of time and care for each other amidst all the death and suffering. Instead I seem to be getting this weird, unhealthy, obsessive, borderline co-dependent relationship between two massively messed up people.
And Iām okay with that. By now, I have completely divorced the movie from the manga in my mind. Some of the characters happen to have the same names and similar appearance as their manga counterparts but thatās it.
What I think is that Shikishima and Mikasa are together. Itās not good nor healthy for either of them but then again, itās a cruel world. They kill Titans together, they sleep together, they hate the world and donāt give a fuck about anything, not even each other. Thatās the routine.
And then the routine gets shaken up. Mikasaās past comes knocking on the door. She resents it. Eren is a reminder of how much she has been hurt and she wants to hurt him back. He still seems to care for her so thatās the approach she takes. She doesnāt need him anymore. She doesnāt care for him anymore. Cue the scene with the apple.
Fucked up but so so intriguing. I am writing out a fic where I expand on the above scenario. Itās a much darker take than my previous SM fic but you know what? I donāt care. If this is what the movie is going to serve us, than Iāll roll with it. Once in a while, a dark ship can be fun to indulge in.

Meh, Iām not hopping on the Shikishima hate train just yet. Reminder: we share a fandom with the type of people who think Levi is abusive toward Eren in canon, so Iām sorry but I canāt take every fans word as truth. Some say heās an asshole but with good reason, some say shikimika is a mutual relationship, some say Mikasa is āsubmissiveā, others say Mikasa looks up to him and respects him, some say he is abusive, some say Shiki is cocky but his main goal is to assemble a strong team that could defeat the titans. Some say heās the true villain. I canāt convoke an opinion from this contradicting information.Ā
I already started to ship shikimika prematurely, so Iām not going to prematurely hate on Shikishima until I get the facts straight. For now, Iām just going to ride out the wait and cease connections between rivamika and shikimika to be safe.
If shikimika is unhealthy and Shikishima is as terrible as some say, Iāll gladly call him out for being shit, but not until I have solid proof. Iām sorry but this movie is starting to give me a headache and I honestly canāt switch from liking a character to hating him within a day, especially since I havenāt seen the movie and canāt hate on scenes/characterizations I havenāt even seen for myself yet. :|

This War Is Ours - ShikiMika fanfic
Title: This War Is Ours
Fandom: Shingeki no Kyojin live action movie
Pairing: Shikishima/Mikasa
Rating: T
Word Count: 2475
Content Notices: non-graphic descriptions of violence
A/N: So, three trailers, a handful of stills and a couple of interviews is all I have to go on, yet here I am, posting a ShikiMika fanfic. Yep, Iām pretty deep. Also, I fully expect most of this to be jossed by the actual movie hence why Iām posting it today before it happens. The characterization, while based on the manga, is mostly guesswork based on what little we know about the movie and adjusted as I saw fit.
The title is from Escape the Fateās song This War Is Ours. That song, along with the bandās The Guillotine, The Aftermath and Until We Die was on repeat the whole time I was writing this.
And Iām putting this into the RivaMika tag because we all know who Shikishima is really meant to be, never mind the plausible deniability the creators made for themselves.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mikasaās first personal impression of the Worldās Strongest Man was less than flattering. She was the top of her class, having worked hard to get to that position, mastering all subjects in a year when it took most trainees more than three and his almost casual dismissal of her skills (āShe will do.ā) rankled. Never mind that she wasnāt actually working that hard to distinguish herself but rather to have better options at finding her family. She was good at what she did (the military wouldnāt recommend her otherwise) and she would make him admit it before they were through.
A bittersweet taste of a goodbye kissā¦
The Kiss
So, I saw some people trying to discredit the kiss by claiming that it was forced on Mikasa. Iām quite sensitive about things like that so I did my best to analyze the context-less half-second we got.
Frame by frame, weāve got Shikishima with his hand on Mikasaās nape. The head tilt on both sides. Theyāre leaning ever closer and Mikasaās eyes start to close. At the moment their lips touch, she closes her eyes completely.
Now, I know that the anecdotal evidence isnāt worth much but that one time a guy tried to kiss me without my consent, my eyes got fucking wide in surprise and I pushed him away the moment he started leaning in. Actually, in every scene from various shows/movies where an unwanted kiss happened, the kissed party usually had their eyes wide open. I donāt see that happening in here. All in all, that kiss looks pretty consensual to me.
You know what that moment actually reminds me of? A goodbye kiss. Like he is going to go away - a different mission than her or something - and this is their parting. You know, I kind of like that. So until proven otherwise, Iām going to believe that Shikishima and Mikasa are in an actual relationship in the movie and this is their routine goodbye before assignments. Please, let this be true.
