Stardust SMP: Episode 2
The breeze whistled calmly through the trees. Nova pulled her hood tighter over her head as she walked, the soles of her boots pressing into the dirt beneath her. She’d long since strayed off the cobblestone path that Boo had made around their house, and, ever since, the cabin had gone out of view. She threw a glance over her shoulder, unable to help the anxiety and paranoia that took root deep within her. She hoisted her horse and gripped the reins tightly.
Finally, with a deep, steadying breath, Nova urged forward.
Traveling as a hybrid isn’t necessarily a smart idea. Especially traveling alone. It’s why Nova has tugged a cloak on, hiding away all the features that identify her as half… well, not human.
Hybrid hunters had become, over the years, far more of a problem out in the open servers. The administrators never cared much, so nothing was done about them, which is why Boo and Nova had built their home so far from civilization.
As Nova walked, though, she was nearing the villages. Population was growing, and cottages were coming into sight. She began to pass the occasional merchant, and by the time she made it to the first village, the sun was hanging lowly over the horizon, the sky dark hues of blue and purple.
Now, Nova would’ve pushed through the night -- she wasn’t really all that tired anyway. But as the sun fell, so too did flakes of snow. And, as crappy as her sense of self-preservation was, Nova just could not stand the cold seeping through her cloak.
So, she veered off the dirt path and onto the tilled roads of a small village. The village was quiet, soft lights shining through opaque curtains of the homes she passed by. A woman waved at Nova from where she sat on her porch as she passed, and Nova smiled politely back, albeit a little awkwardly. Sue her; she’s a little antisocial. Isn’t everyone?
She came upon a small inn, and tied her horse’s reins on one of the pillars, slowly running a hand through its mane. “I’ll be right back, Cody.”
Nova shook the fallen snow off of her coat before she stepped inside. There was a shout from the back room; “I’ll be with you in just a moment!”
Sure enough, an older woman stepped out from the back room, graying hair tied up into a bun, and kind eyes meeting Nova’s. She had a name tag pinned to her dress, one that read Hime.
“Evening,” Nova began, stumbling a little over her words, “Would you happen to have any rooms open for lodging? I just need one for a few hours, I don’t plan to stay the entire night.”
“Of course, darling,” Hime smiled, opening a binder.
“How much?” Nova asked, pulling out a pouch of coins.
“For just a few hours, it’ll be 12 gold.”
Nova slides over the currency, and Hime, in turn, slides over the binder and a pen. “Just sign there, and I’ll grab you the keys.”
But as Nova picked up the pen and reached forward to sign her name, her sleeve rode up. Blue patches of scales lay bare along her arms, and Hime looked directly at them.
Immediately, Nova snapped her arm back, and her gaze went stony. Her palm rested on the hilt of her sword and she waited for someone to pop out of the shadows — a knife to glint in the dim lighting, a person to tackle her to the ground, a weakness potion to shatter at her feet —
Instead, Hime reached across the counter, and Nova barely repressed a flinch as she took her hand and rolled down her sleeve. Hime turned and opened a cupboard full of keys. She grabbed a set, and laid them in Nova’s palm, closing her fingers around them.
“You rest well, dear.” Her voice was soft, smooth, like she was speaking a lullaby to a young child. “Not to worry. You’re safe here.”

Stardust SMP: Episode 1
Sunlight filtered through the colored windowpanes, tinting the oak wood floors under Nova’s feet lovely shades of rose pinks and cool gray. A chest creaks open, and Nova pulls out an empty flask, dusting it off before attaching it to the belt strapped across her chest. She stands, adjusts her arm guards, and pulls a hood over her head, covering the blue ears that poke up out of black hair.
She steps out of her room, shutting the door behind her, and strides into the living room. The sunrise is slow, but living atop a hill smothers the inside of their home with rays and warmth early in the morning. Sleeping in isn’t very easy, so that explains why the kitchen smells of a freshly cooked breakfast -- eggs and bacon, it seems like.
“Boo?” Nova called out, walking through the drawn in curtains that cover the entryway to the kitchen.
Sure enough, Boo stands at the stove, plating up a steamy serving of food and turning to greet their sister. “Morning!”
Nova blinked down at the dish, lips slightly parted. “You… made me breakfast?” Her stare is owlish, and ever-confused.
Boo pushed the plate into her hands, shoving her towards the dining table. “You wouldn’t have eaten before you left if I didn’t.” They explained -- Nova spluttered at that. “And you’re travelling far, so you need to eat.”
“But- Boo, I’ll be late-”
Boo cut her quickly off, sitting her down into the worn chair. “Eat, Nova.”
Nova sighed as Boo thrust a fork into her hand. “Alright, fine,” she conceded. And, honestly? It was really good. Nova doesn’t even think she chewed much, just sort of… swallowed.
As Nova placed her dish in the sink, Boo came by with a small bag, “I packed you some food for the way. Make sure you eat it, okay?” They grinned up at Nova, stuffing it into their backpack.
Nova rolled her eyes, a fond smile crossing her face that she didn’t bother hiding. “I’m supposed to be the older sibling here, y’know.”
“Says the girl who can’t even use the stove without burning the house down.”
Nova chirped, “That was one time!”
…
The morning sun leaked through the open door, casting a shadow across the wood as Nova prepared to leave. She didn’t wear much armor -- just a chestplate and arm guards. Like Boo had said, she was travelling far and walking all the way to the port city wearing clunky armor wasn’t exactly fun.
Of course, that didn’t do much to lessen Boo’s worries, but Boo wouldn’t let Nova see that. Their older sister had been picked, drafted, basically, for the Elysium Games -- the Elysium Games!! -- and they’d be damned to not support her. Besides, this was a once in a lifetime chance. The games came only once every hundred years, and the promise of riches for the winner would certainly be helpful, but Boo’s pretty sure Nova only accepted for the thrill of the game.
Nova shrugged her backpack on and Boo took a deep breath before handing her a coat. “It’ll be getting a little cold out later.” They explained.
Nova gave her thanks and draped the coat over her shoulders.
There was an awkward, tense moment of silence. Boo couldn’t help the laughter bubbling out of their chest. “It’s just a week, you know.” They said. “A week, and I’ll be there watching you, sis.”
Nova heaved a sigh. “Yeah, I know. I just -- haven’t left you before for such a long time.”
Boo shook their head fondly.. They took Nova’s hands in theirs, squeezing them reassuringly. Nova squeezed back, smiling gently. “You stay safe, kiddo.” She whispered.
“I’ll see you soon.”
