i think a cool thing hgsn does is not show all of a scene. it'll jump to another part in the story even when ur probably wondering what happens next. hgsn isnt entirely from yoshiki's pov, but concerning him this meme comes to mind

It's so everything 2 me right now that, even though the title is "the summer hikaru died," he didn't even die in summer. Like, he died and was possessed in the winter. But the more interesting point is that he ('hikaru') was confronted about it in summer. So it was his identity/sense of self that died (and the way that monstrousness/being "other" is syncretized with being gay is certainly relevant) ^_^

I've also seen it suggested that the title is prophetic, that 'hikaru' will die too, but what's notable here is that the title is written to refer to hikaru (光 vs ヒカル) so the only way for it to be about 'hikaru' is if they're the same person. It's an idea somewhat supported in the manga so far (in ch. 20 Rie suggests that 'hikaru's' situation may be more akin to reincarnation rather than possession, and in ch. 13 yoshiki and his friends come to the conclusion that they can't say for sure if a duplicate person is different from the one they're duplicated from) but as of this point in the story I don't think I can really make a call.

And regardless of whether 'hikaru' is literally hikaru, the reading of hikaru as the dead straight identity and 'hikaru' as the currently living gay identity remains important. 2 me. ^_^

A character analysis of Yoshiki cause he’s very dear to me 😔

I genuinely hope that as the story progresses we’ll get to learn more about Yoshiki’s father and the dynamics in the Tsujinaka household. Even tho we still don’t know the details we can see how much his father’s abusive tendencies ended up affecting Yoshiki , and mokmoklen is truly able to bring it out in a subtle but magnificent way in the things Yoshiki says , both about himself or others , and also in his relationship with “Hikaru”.

So, I’m not a psychology major myself but from personal experience I believe that Yoshiki presents symptoms of the so called fawn response. Fawning is also known as the “please-appease” syndrome, being mainly associated with people pleasing and codependency (see where I’m already going with this?). Usually these people seek safety by pleasing others as a way of avoiding conflict.

A possible reason as to why people might develop this syndrome is because they grew up in an abusive environment when they were little , maybe seeing one of their caretakers have outbursts of anger (we know that Yoshiki’s parents used to argue to such a degree that neighborhoods could hear them + if I remember correctly it is stated in the light novel that his father always used to slam his hands on the table and such).

As a consequence of this , he learnt that being good and pleasing his father would be the only way to guarantee his own survival. We see this happen in one of the flashbacks where his father grabs him (rather forcefully may I add) by the arm and Yoshiki just let it happen , knowing it’s best not to say anything. Even tho we can see how uncomfortable he looks with his father around.

People suffering from fawn response also have a hard time saying no , feeling guilty about expressing their own needs and feelings. Since growing up in an environment where you have to constantly walk around eggshells with others and where communication has never really been a thing , the things left unsaid make these people start believing that THEY might be the problem.

We see this happen in ch. 7. Now , I know that people will probably have various interpretations of THAT specific sequence of scenes , but personally I interpreted it as a metaphor for attempted r*pe or violation of some sort , with “Hikaru” trying to claim Yoshiki in the only way he knows , because he aches for him so damn much but he realizes that stealing Hikaru’s identity doesn’t make Yoshiki his in any way. He’s different from Hikaru and he can’t and shouldn’t expect to occupy the same spot as Hikaru previously did.

And even tho what “Hikaru” did is horrible , Yoshiki is still the one feeling bad about RIGHTFULLY trying to set some kind of boundary with “Hikaru”. He feels like HE is the one that should be apologizing for being harsh with him.

This brings me onto the next point which is being self-sacrificing , with Yoshiki quite literally feeling guilty for all the deaths happening most probably because of “Hikaru” and even deciding to share the burden of his possible next killings with him. Plus I would also add in what he said in ch.21 , where he literally states that he would give “Hikaru” his whole EVERYTHING if it meant that he could live somewhere as he pleased. He’s always thinking about others’ needs before his owns , deciding to share burdens that don’t have anything to do with him and he shouldn’t be carrying.

Other obvious trait very common in people suffering from this condition is having codependent relationships , which perfectly describes what he has with “Hikaru”. Hikaru is no longer here , so I’d rather have a fake around than having to live without him. This is what he says more or less in ch.1 , and it’s actually so heartbreaking to hear because Hikaru was quite literally Yoshiki’s light and source of comfort. He was the one always protecting Yoshiki and taking care of him. So when “Hikaru” goes “I bet you were crying not wanting for me to leave you” it is actually true , Yoshiki is no good without Hikaru! (or at least that’s what he thinks , but I swear you are baby 😭)

And even tho in ch.21 we see his journey of processing his grief for Hikaru’s death finally ending, he’s now becoming even more attached to “Hikaru” and getting all worried when he started thinking that maybe going back to the mountain might be the best option. You can clearly see his distress as he says “Didn’t you finally find the place you belong? You can’t do that. Let’s find another solution together”

Another thing is obviously the fact that he hates being scolded , especially when he’s so well behaved all the time like mokmoklen said.

I would also like to add the fact that he thinks so lowly of himself when he’s actually such a caring and kindhearted person. He says that he’s not sweet , and that he’s as hard on others like he is on himself. But as soon as Asako feels insecure about her hair he goes “I can definitely ask my mom since she’s a hairdresser” , we can see his kindness in the way he cares for his sister etc …

Anyways this was just me rambling about him because mokmoklen is able to write such beautiful characters and Yoshiki is literally my son

As for the novel and short story, I don't plan on translating the whole thing, but I do plan on collecting any interesting snippets and background lore. And i very much doubt there’s be *any* obvious linking like that between tanaka and rie, for now it’s just very faintly talked on the background, rie has a son that has a physical scar, « tanaka » isn’t really tanaka’s name, rie has been going through something similar and tanaka has some personal issue with unuki/that yokai world (also both like sweet stuff), but nothing is directly linked for now, the most we got was tanaka’s eyes uncensored

His eyes have the same pattern as rie’s so i’ll take this as the confirmation he is rie’s son since moku has a wide variery of eyes patterns so having 2 characters with identical eye design means they’re related (besides tanaka’s eyes have been a secret for 2 volumes already so obviously seeing them is a big deal)

Short answer

Vol 4 releases 5th december on amazon, but physical libraries already put it on the shelves so we already have the back illustration

hgsn theory: Tanaka is from Kubitachi, and is (probably) Rie Kurebayashi's son

now that Tanaka is back (FINALLY OMG) I would like to share this theory I have been thinking of for a while. Out of respect for the  ch 0-11 scanlators, I will not be sharing any screenshots of the pages I'm referencing, but listing them instead. It shouldn't be a big deal since I do describe all the important parts so u don't have to click on them every five seconds, its just to prove I'm not making shit up. Also, for those who don't know who Rie Kurebayashi is (I don't blame you, we literally only know her name based on Yoshiki's contact on his phone): She's the middle aged woman who can see the yokai, and urges Yoshiki to get away from Hikaru or else they'll get "mixed up"

• She mentioned in ch 6 pg 11 (Mangadex) that her dead husband left a scar on her son's body. Who of the cast of characters has a scar on their body? Tanaka. Feels very Chekhov's gun-ish to mention this very specific detail and then introduce a character with a scar right after. • In ch 9 pg 32, he says "Kubitachi is a dank, musty, miserable hole. Imagine if I just... didn't go...". Kubitachi isn't a well known place that has any reputation, yet he describes it with disdain. The only way he would know such things is if he lived there once. • The elders know Tanaka. Mikasa (glasses one) is the one who brings him up (ch 9 pg 31), and Takeda (angry one)  even says "I didn't want to stoop to joining forces with him" (ch 9 pg 32). On ch 12 pg 31, Mikasa even says "Still lookin' ragged as usual" when he first sees him. They know him enough to criticize his looks in front of him, unlike any employer-worker relationship. "As usual" implies that they have seen each other multiple times, perhaps because they saw him grow up in Kubitachi. • Tanaka probably has a special ability. HGSN puts a lot of emphasis in the eyes, especially of those who experience the supernatural. 'Hikaru' has red pupils, Rie has a white halo around her pupil, and Asako's has multiple circles. I'm bringing this up because we never see Tanaka's eyes. Sure, it's summer and the sun is bright, but even inside a car or a house, he never takes his sunglasses off. In this promotional piece, Tanaka is grouped together with Rie and Asako, who have special abilities. As seen by Asako's grandmother, the special ability is genetic. So If Tanaka is Rie's son, it would explain why he has it. • In ch 13 pg 19, Tanaka not only recognizes who old lady Matsuura was, but even asks of Takeda's father. He knows these people by name and face, another hint that he grew up in Kubitachi. • So ch 14 pg 3, is the elephant in the room of my theory. He says that he doesn't have any spiritual intuition, which would disprove my theory he has a special ability. He also mentions that he got the scar by being to "absorbed" in his work In ch 12 pg 29, we see that Rie's son was still a small child when her husband came back (assuming this flashback is from then, when else could it be?). I doubt his father coming back is considered him being absorbed in his work. If he is saying the truth, then he is not Rie's son (but could still be from Kubitachi). However, he could be lying. The elders don't trust him, especially Takeda. In ch 14 pg 2, he even says "Don't ya go doin' somethin' strange while I'm watchin' ya". He doesn't trust this grown man enough to even leave him alone at his work!  Tanaka is just not a trustable person, even in the newest chapter, he seems to be texting a mysterious Satou person, showing that he's full of secrets. • Which actually leads me to the latest chapter! The translator has pointed out that both Tanaka and Satou are extremely common last names, and that combined with not knowing Tanaka's full name leads me to believe that that's not his real name. Why is he using an alias? I'm not so sure. A mysterious guy like him probably has many reasons to hide his real name. Maybe he doesn't want people in this town to recognize him? Obviously the elders do see to know him more than that, but not anyone else, including Rie Kurebayashi. Oof I think that's it! Would love to hear you guys' opinions, but please be nice about it😅 I seen how some of you guys tore that one hgsn reading that it was homophobic to shreds and while I disagree with op some of y'all were brutal! I mean, another day another slay ig but fr pls b nice I will cry🥺

ALSO one if my favorite things abt it is the use of style- like for the most part all panels are correct anatonically and such but when hes trying to really get a point across thats when it rlly shines. #personal #aka two things i like. ashaf and guideau & hikaru and yoshiki #we got our low empathy character that doesnt know things bc theyre nonhuman whose got a kinda dead/came back wrong thing going on #partnered with someone willing to help them #the key difference is their age though (and the genre for mty. i imagine guideau'd have quicker development if he wasnt doing these crazy #fights. hikaru gets it at ch 16) so ofc our teen protag yoshiki alone thinks killing hikaru's the best choice. then he gets his important #'nows not the time to cry' moment #hikaru starts off w a lot of fear and sadness and guideau's mostly anger and hostility. hikaru's also v genuine and more open then shrinks #when yoshiki reacts.
