crowley + being the odd one demon out

we all know that crowley is one of the only demons to actually remember his past as a human before his soul war tortured & twisted into its darkest form. he remembers pretty much every detail - especially the abuse he suffered & the losses he faced, but also the pain he caused others. it’s that weird, little thing he’s never talked about to anybody.

for the longest time, crowley hid it from the others; mostly out of fear because he did not want to go back on the rack for another century or two until he was shiny & properly functional, but even after he’d made a name for himself he .. didn’t really parade it around. he’d always been different, had always been the black sheep, so just this once crowley wanted to be an ordinary demon, not a broken boy toy.

then again, crowley never really wanted to be ordinary. since his rebirth as a demon, crowley wanted more - always. he’d always secretly been a curious boy, but that thirst for more was never quite sated in his human life. now, with the power to be anything he ever wanted, crowley found that thirst within him again & quite soon, he found himself different yet again. the other demons only wanted one thing: to get out of hell. meanwhile crowley wanted more than ever before; ambitious & ruthless in his pursuit of happiness. 

he worked harder, faster, more thoroughly than the others. he didn’t go terrorizing earth for entertainment purposes - no, he did it to form connections, to bring back souls, to close contracts. once again, crowley found himself the outsider, only this time he didn’t care.

crowley + magic

we all know that crowley was born half & half, his mother had the gift, his father didn’t, which made him a somewhat of a hit or miss type of child. he could’ve been born with it, too - or he could’ve been born utterly human & nobody would know for a good, long while. rowena tried to coax the little boy into using magic early on, but fergus seemed to be incapable of summoning any form of magical abilities. 

rowena wasn’t fond of the little boy in the first place, a burden she’d rather abandon, so his lack of talent only reminded her that he was, indeed, the son of a man who promised her the world & then abandoned her, which didn’t improve the relationship between mother & son. 

fergus tried. he grew up watching his mother use magic, he watched her brew potions & do wonders with herbs for the people in town to make a living, so magic wasn’t really anything bad to him, but he saw the look on his mother’s face whenever he failed. 

it wasn’t until he was much older that he finally found a way to harness the power within him. he was a teenager, filled with rage & that was the source of his magic. some of the lessons his mother taught him as a child were still all too present within, he found himself able to do what he couldn’t in the past. but magic was the last thing he wanted at the time, especially since he didn’t know spells or how to do wondrous things, so he forgot about it soon after.

it was only when he became a demon that crowley found an interest in magic again. he noticed he could harness it much easier, though to be fair, the rage never left him in the first place - transformation or not. crowley had a lot of time to improve & learn. ambitious as he’d been when he was a wee boy & with all the books he could ever wish for, crowley quickly became unstoppable. 

nobody in hell thought it useful, but crowley’s spells & smarts were what made him stick out. he was useful. crowley’s a perfectionist, so he’s never stopped learning, but there are some spells he’s never had the chance to learn.

@malumxsubest​ better sits down & buckles in for the ride she signed up for: I wonder what are your thoughts of Crowley when it comes to the word love and saying it. When will he be comfortable of saying it? Will it be private? Or will he be proud to show his love to his partner?

alright so, let’s note that there’s two kinds of love crowley can be referring to. there’s the pet name, which he uses frequently - without much thought, honestly as it’s just how he rolls. it means .. well, not a lot when it comes to emotions, really. it’s nonchalant, a tease at best. 

so, with that out of the way - let’s get down & dirty, lol. usually, crowley goes by the idea that love is for noobs. it’s for humans, they’re stupid, dumb & hopeless, so they can waste their time loving others & breaking each other’s hearts. 

of course meeting dean winchester kinda lowkey rattles him up a bit & with time, crowley’s a lot less uh, uptight about it. it’s partly dean’s fault that crowley has opened up his heart again, only to get it torn apart & stuffed back into his pocket. with the trauma from human life time, which he unfortunately remembers all too well, it’s safe to say that the word love doesn’t come easy to crowley. 

he never thought anything wrong with it as a little boy, but his mother soon enough let him know that it is not okay. it’s wrong, it’s weak & he shouldn’t be loving anything, or anybody. nowadays, crowley tries very hard to resort to that, but with everything he’s seen & done, it’s not easy. he knows there’s more in the world to be had, only he can’t seem to find it for himself. 

if he did though, it would be a very fragile construct. we see that when feelings are involved, the cocky crowley we know is very insecure & it would be the same with a lover. it is the same with a lover. to actually tell a partner he loves them .. uh, it would take a long while. it would take trust, which doesn’t come easy to crowley at all & it would take knowing that his heart is safe. it would definitely be in private as it would take even longer for crowley to broadcast the news. the more people know, the worse the humiliation after, y’know? 

he would wait for the right moment, or honestly, i can see it happening in a moment of fear. be it death, or the threat of losing the person he loves without having told them, if it’s not in that, it’s a special moment - one shared only between them (or it might actually accidentally slip when he’s not paying attention - we’ve been there, it’s happened before).

so uh, yeah, he would definitely be hesitant to share with the world. besides the fact he’s a demon & he’s got a lot of enemies, so he’d surely prefer to hide his love from the outside world, but he would not be ashamed of loving another person. he would just .. well, bring a lot of patience & determination, because to get past crowley’s defenses is not a piece of cake.

When Crowley ever finds someone to ever settle down with, would he want a family or would he not considering with his experience in fatherhood when he was human deter him from ever having children?

so this is definitely dependent on circumstances, but yes - he would want a family. it would not be easy, it would not be instant or easy by any chance. crowley still is plagued by guilt & grief over gavin, hurt & disappointment over rowena & then there’s his own faults & failures that keep him on his toes. 

but deep down, all he wants is a second chance. be it at life, at love, at family & at being a father. we see it with amara - yes, she meant power, but he flourished in his role as her protector. he found passion in it, purpose. 

there would always be doubt within him, even if i think he’d be a great dad, but with a lot of patience & time i think he’d be okay. it would be a process, he’d need gentle support from his significant other, but he deserves to love & be loved in return, don’t you think?

deep down underneath the sarcasm & the pretense confidence, crowley knows he’s broken. he knows that that feeling of emptiness will never quiet go away, no matter what he does. he’s tried for many, many years. has achieved everything he wanted to achieve & much more, but money, success & power isn’t what it is that he truly desires. it’s taken him a long time to realize, but once he did, it made things easier. 

he’s ignoring that nagging feeling, he focuses on the good things in life, always searching for something to make him feel whole, but not knowing what it is. 

which leads me to my next habit of his. 

crowley likes fixing people. he picks up broken strays reminding him of fergus & he takes them home to wherever he resides to fix them. nobody knows about them, most are hidden away in safe houses, some in hell. making them happy makes him feel good even if it doesn’t last. it gives him peace of mind & he greatly enjoys being their center of attention - if not their world. he’s that person to them fergus always prayed for at night. it doesn’t quite heal his own wounds, but it surely keeps the pain at bay.

y’all know what kills me some nights? remembering rowena calling crowley “a bored king” cause listen, there is so much more to that aspect of him. 

the throne & being king

we meet crowley, he’s confident in his abilities & in his charm - his power to sell sins to saints. that’s what he’s good at, words. 

he wasn’t always like that, growing up very much human with nothing & nobody there to watch over him. he had nothing. he always had to look after himself, fight for everything. life woke ambition within him, but there’s limitations when you’re human. 

being a demon, though - that opened what felt like four million doors. crowley could finally grow into the man he always wanted to be. he dresses only in the finest suits, he dines only at the finest restaurants, demons are scared of him - he’s got respect. rowena never respected him, nobody did. he’s so good at this new life he becomes the first king of the crossroads. he re-structures the crossroads, develops it into something more efficient - something better. he was invisible for his entire human life - now, now everybody sees him. he will be seen & heard. 

crowley being the demon he is... somewhat unfinished - a raw diamond, still feels the urge to get better, go big or go home. so desperate to prove his worth to himself, crowley strives for more. something to fill the void in his heart, something to silence that voice in the back of his head saying his mother was right all along. 

he gets the throne & it’s exciting at first - crowley’s a workaholic, so there’s no issues there. he can re-organize hell, fix its broken system - optimize it, but it doesn’t fulfill him. it doesn’t help. after a few weeks he realizes as much & that voice is back, whispering relentlessly. he thought becoming the king of the underworld would finally free him, but it did quite the opposite. he caged himself, lucifer & his minions on one side of it - waiting for him to make a mistake & the winchesters on the other. he himself stood in front, blaming himself for letting it come this far. 

the demons fear him, but they don’t respect him - they aren’t made to. they will always side with lucifer, it’s in their dna. hell ran like clockwork, lucifer locked away, the winchesters at peace ... crowley got it everything & yet it’s not enough - it doesn’t satisfy him. hell’s not what he wants. that’s when we see him slowly building up a healthy portion of resentment for hell & its inhabitants, it’s also the main reason he’s more & more feeling drawn to the winchesters. fighting for their approval is exhausting & most often unfair, but .. they keep him on his toes. 

when he’s with them he can forget for a little while & just be himself while he’s trying to sell them the idea of a friendly demon. crowley always thought he wants power, all of it, but that’s not all. he wants family. the winchesters (and most of the fandom haha i’m not bitter) never saw him that way, but he did. deep down he thought he could find peace with them. 

boy was he wrong.

lowkey based on this and delving a little further into the matter. 

for most of the time crowley’s known sam & dean, he’s been the one to draw the short stick. he’s the one that gets betrayed, ignored, left behind - forgotten. but that one time, this one single time - dean chose him. 

it was out of desperation, there’s no denying that & we know crowley’s very good at selling his ideas, so you can bet he used dean’s worry about what sam would say to finding he was a demon and enforced it so dean could separate from his brother, but no matter the reason why he left, dean decided to stay. 

all this time crowley’s wanted nothing more than to befriend the winchesters, he wanted to be accepted by them, but when he realized so long as they could gang up on him that wouldn’t happen & sam was the reason for that, he knew that he had to split them up. there was no other option & dean’s situation was perfect. dean had nowhere to go & crowley welcomed him with open arms. he could’ve left at any point in time, but he stayed by crowley for months despite being somewhat annoyed at crowley trying to push him a little too hard. 

he stayed with crowley. 

for the first time since they met, dean chose him & not sam. so you can bet crowley’s fckn ecstatic & all too eager to rub it into sam’s face. sam always won, now it’s his turn & it feels way too good to hold back. while dean’s with him, crowley can pretend that he can turn the winchester around, make him the partner & loyal companion he’s wished for him to become. he also knows that he’s got a point, sam is incredibly threatened by dean’s decision, because for most of the time he felt safe knowing that his influence on dean kept him from ever trusting or believing or even liking crowley & now he can’t get in-between them, which crowley clearly is very aware of. 

i just love this so much. admittedly crowley’s chance wasn’t much of a chance, because demon!dean wasn’t the dean he wanted to befriend - truly, but it gave him hope for a little while because he got to witness that dean could have fun with him & enjoy spending time together when sam’s not butting in. it confirms something that’s bothered him for long; he is not the issue. that, given that both winchesters tend to make him believe that he is, in fact, the problem whenever & wherever something happens ... is big.

anonymous sent a little minion: Crowley's fave thing about Dean, it can either be a physical attribute or a something to do with his damning personality.

//okay it wasn’t sent directly at crowley, so i can write the truth haha. so the answer to that question isn’t easy. what crowley feels for dean can’t be explained by saying “he likes freckles” or something like that. yes, dean is handsome as hell & crowley enjoys staring at him, but that’s not why he’s feeling the way about dean that he is. 

it is legit his damning personality. crowley admires dean’s loyalty to those he cares for, his passion not only in battle & his stubborn-ness protecting those he loves. he doesn’t generally need protection, but it’s the whole “he would fight for me” thing. admittedly, sometimes dean would - sometimes he is all ‘ugh you’re a demon fck off’ but with more time & less bad writing, it could’ve worked. it’s dean - as a package, that’s his favorite thing, really. crowley can see that dean also struggles & he wants family, love & all that as much as crowley does, but the difference between them is that dean can project all that on sam. deep down though, crowley believes they can make each other whole.

something i realized earlier  is that while we all know crowley as the confident, flirty & charming demon he is, he’s more or less useless in a proper relationship. he does remember human life, but even then he wasn’t doing too hot with his wife. not that he didn’t try, but as a human he was filled to the brim with self-doubt, hatred & more or less sabotaged himself more often than not. 

as a demon, though, he’s simply not used to letting his guard down. he never was. it’s an instinct he’s got to fight if he ever finds someone he can trust. with casual relationships that’s easier, because while affection might be displayed or received, it’s much different than actually opening up to another person, baring his heart for someone else to see .. is something he’s not used to at all. 

the emotional part of a relationship will always be the biggest challenge when it comes to crowley, no matter how much he yearns for another person, he will always try & keep the relationship somewhat at a distance - intimate, but ... not emotionally so. if he opens up & admits he feels for someone else, that someone other than himself is important to him.. doubt & all that will come back to haunt him. he can be soft & caring, but still protect his fragile soul from the outside world. it’ll take patience to get past that.

i think a lot of people like to ignore season 11 ever happened for a bunch of reasons, but despite the pain it brings me, i actually really like season 11 when it comes to crowley plot. part of it is amara. 

crowley took her in thinking of his own survival & what it would mean if the winchesters got their hands on the power that is the darkness. crowley heard she was only a child & saw opportunity to have his own, loyal, loving killing machine - of course he did. crowley wouldn’t be crowley if he didn’t try & exploit that. power is his addiction, it makes him feel safe when almost nothing else does. 

then he gets his hands on her & he knew he had to impress her, she was much smarter than he expected, but it quickly changed into something a lot less power hungry. crowley went out of his way to earn her affection, he’s never been a proper parent before, nor has he had one - so parenting is incredibly alien to him, but he tries. he tried to raise amare giving her everything he’d lacked as a child. he wanted her happy. 

he tried so, so hard, but in the end she chose the winchesters, she even attacked him & even though he didn’t really show it because he’s crowley, it hurt him. he fought so hard for her affection, but it wasn’t enough & nothing he does ever seems to be - something that still bothers him from when he was human. he was never enough. i think season 11 & amara play a big part in crowley’s mental downfall towards the end of season 12.

day 13 - pets/animals

does your muse have any pets?

do they want any pets?

love animals, hate them, specific feared or disliked animals?

favorite animal?

ho boy. 

crowley has pets most of his verses, be it hellhounds in canon-inspired verses, actual dogs in his divergence verse & in the human verses. whenever life allows it, he’ll have pets around him. crowley doesn’t trust usually, but he trusts his hounds/dogs, because he knows he raised them to be loyal & kind. he had influence on their behavior & he knows that dogs (even hell’s) are born to be loyal, so he feels less vulnerable trusting them. 

he’s one of those people treating his pets like humans, he’ll talk to them, ask them for opinions, spoil them, take them wherever he goes. they’re part of his family. only very few people can call themselves his family, so for crowley, it’s a grand honor to allow anybody into his inner circle of trust. 

pets are the only source of affection he’s known in a long, long time- his very first experience dating back to when he was human still. it wasn’t a dog, but goats can be good friends, too, he’d realised. nowadays, he opens his heart only to his hounds & he’s not shy with affection for them either. the only person who’d spend a night cuddling with hellhounds is crowley & we all know that ;) 

note that he’s also highkey lowkey got an affection for werewolves for that matter. it’s subconscious, but theoretically werewolves are the perfect friends to him. they’re dog & human, so he can hold proper conversation & still get the full on dog package on top. 

his passion for other animals is limited, honestly. his heart is so full of dog-love, there’s only very little space for other animals. he is not too fond of cats before knowing said cat. but he doesn’t hate any animals. maybe moths, because they threaten his clothing’s survival during storage times. 

favorite animal is everything dog. hellhound, werewolf, wolf, dog etc. there’s not buts on this, nothing is ever going to change his adoration for dogs. if i didn’t love him as ceo (also sticking close to canon tbh) in human verses, he would be the owner of a dog sanctuary tbh.

day 12 - living space:

what kind of place do they live in, a house, an apartment etc?

do they like to keep their space super clean or cluttered?

what things in their home do they enjoy the most?

crowley has several homes, so to speak. some are purely for work, some are solemnly to hide if things go south & he finds himself needing to vanish & then there’s hell. crowley doesn’t like hell, he doesn’t like being in hell, but he’s not against staying at his makeshift hell in the abandoned asylum. seemingly a ruin on the outside, he’s spent much care ‘upgrading’ the inside & not only to resemble his actual hell, but also feel comfortable to him. 

it’s supposed to be the palace he deserves. 

the many corridors away from the throne room lead to several areas, but one leads to crowley’s little paradise. it’s a vast room, clad in dark rock walls & a polished wooden floor. a small room splits from it, which is where he keeps his clothing (yes a walk-in closet), there’s a big bed inside even though crowley doesn’t need to sleep & a fireplace because he enjoys the ambience. only very few people know about that room or what it means to crowley. guthrie knew. he was the only demon allowed to ever set foot inside. 

outside of ‘hell’, crowley owns an apartment loft in LA, which is the polar opposite. bright, cold colors - white walls, dark interior - grey accents or wood. much more modern than his home in hell. he enjoys the differences. it’s the first thing he bought after escaping hell & rose as crowley. LA used to be his turf, he never gave it up even after mentally moving into hell. when he needs time to himself to think, that’s where he retreats. 

there’s also his house in scotland. it’s a decent size, comfortable & cozier than his apartment. its interior is still modern & chic but less pricey. it’s ... sweeter in looks, somewhat uhhh, clumsy. he just went crazy & mixed different styles etc. his other places are somewhat in unison - this one’s mixed. it’s located in his hometown & juliet is the only one who knows where. he’ll retreat there in grave cases or after he quits, or vacation occasionally. (main verse setting)

the safe houses are sparsely (for crowley) decorated, so there’s not much to say about those. 

crowley is insanely clean. use a cup? you better clean it or put it in the  bloody dishwasher. everything has its assigned spot & there’s no straying from that or he gets annoyed. with the dogs in his scotland house, it’s a bit more chaotic, but when dogs or hounds (or kids) cause chaos, he’s fine with it. 

all his homes have a few things in common; firstly beds. he enjoys just laying in bed & reading, or sleeping or ahem other activities. secondly, his alcohol. every home has its own cabinet that’s stocked to last him through two winters & thirdly, library. crowley enjoys reading, educating himself & learning secrets.
