It's calm enough to silence his woes, even if they weren't what sparked his silent pensiveness, the air of mourning that seemed to drape itself along him like a funeral veil. Shedding it for the moment, his eyes garner an old sharpness back to them, burning like frostbite in their wolfish depths as they lock back on bright inhuman sights of mako tinged skies. His tongue peeks between parted lips, wetting daintily along their curved edge before his brows furrow in determination. Leaning in, using his hold on the man's neck to guide him forwards, Squall grants a kiss, languid & lingering, mouthing what he didn't have the courage to say out loud in loving gestures. All expressed in loud caresses that end in him resting his forehead against the dark-haired swordsman's.

Breathless, he takes a moment to soothe his beating heart, gaze searching Zack's own before they thin to match to crescent of his smile.

Tiergan has been inside the Tribunal Hall before. 

Perhaps never from this seat, no, but he’s certainly snuck into this building to steal classified documents and such before—and he vaguely recalls attending a public Tribunal with his mother, years ago, when she had dreamed of him sitting on one of the crystal thrones across from him. 

Her mistake, really. Tiergan had never been convinced enough by the Lost Cities’ facade to even entertain the idea of becoming a Councillor. But there is still a part of him that feels rather guilty, having fallen so far from the expectations his family had set for him. Here, seated for a Tribunal after sacrificing himself to save his lover…well, it’s a far cry from his childhood dreams. 

“Sir Tiergan,” Councillor Emery begins, and the room falls silent. It isn’t a public Tribunal; Tiergan assumes that the Council are far too afraid of letting their citizens know that these rebels exist to allow them to enter. So Tiergan easily finds Prentice’s dark eyes in the small crowd, looking back at him with a mixture of grief, anger, and—most dangerously—guilt. 

I’m sorry, Tiergan transmits, though he knows the words are meaningless. But he can’t say anything more substantial, not with the possibility of Emery listening to every word. 

Prentice says nothing, only turns away, breaking a part of Tiergan’s soul along with the eye contact. 

Councillor Emery clears his throat once again. “Sir Tiergan,” he repeats, but Tiergan stays stubbornly silent. He knows this game. He hasn’t been asked to speak, and he won’t give them any more information than required. “Is your lawyer present?”

“I am,” a voice says from behind him, and Tiergan raises an eyebrow. He hadn’t requested any lawyer—partly because he had no desire to defend himself, and partly because he’d had hope, once, that this would be a quick process, that the world would be so kind as to allow him his Exile in peace. And yet, now Leto emerges from the shadows, and Tiergan’s eyes widen. 

Leto? he transmits, to no response except for a slight falter in Leto’s stride. 

The Council, too, seem surprised by his presence. The question of a lawyer is usually a mere formality—these Tribunals, rare as they are, are designed to be more of a show of the Council’s power than a genuine assessment of innocence. As such, Leto’s efforts are entirely fruitless—after all, from the moment that Quinlin and Alden had accused him, everyone had known that Tiergan was doomed to Exile. That’s how it always is with Tribunals: they’re simply a pretty show of power from the Council, a way to tell the accused that their lives are out of their control. 

Tiergan meets Leto’s eyes and urges silently for him to leave, but Leto’s gaze instead snaps to a raised platform in front of the thrones, upon which two figures in full Emissary regalia are standing with sharp glares directed toward them. 

Tiergan curses under his breath. The Cognates. He watches as Quinlin mutters something—a scathing comment, no doubt—in Alden’s ear, and Alden squeezes his colleague’s hand tightly. 

Emery clears his throat once again, appearing to be entirely annoyed. “Lord Vacker, Lord Sonden. A pleasure to see you here.” Tiergan almost pities the man, somehow—he has some sympathy for anyone who has to deal with Quinlin and Alden’s ridiculousness. 

Alden and Leto are busy locking themselves in a staring contest, so it’s Quinlin who replies, “A pleasure to be invited, Councillor.” His voice is carefully even, but years of knowing the man make the small wavers in his demeanour obvious to Tiergan. They don’t think they’re going to win, he realises with a jolt. 

…Perhaps no-one really knows how this Tribunal is going to go. 

He scans the crowd once more for Prentice, but his gaze instead lands on Livvy, quietly wiping away a tear in the corner. She’s the only other friend of his in attendance, though she, thankfully, seems far less angry about this whole situation than Prentice is. 

Which can only mean that Prentice has yet to tell her about Tiergan’s sacrifice. 

I’ll miss you, he transmits to her, and her gaze snaps up to his podium. He wants to say more, but it’s likely that Kenric or Emery are monitoring his transmissions, and he can’t afford to incriminate Livvy, too. 

“I don’t see how any more evidence is necessary,” Alden says, and Tiergan realises that he’s been speaking. “Has he not already confessed to collaborating with rebel groups in a direct attempt to undermine the Council?”

The Council is silent for a moment—likely taking a moment to converse between themselves, Tiergan thinks—before Emery turns to him and asks, “Is this true, Sir Tiergan?” 

Out of the corner of his eye, Tiergan sees Leto shaking his head furiously, but he elects to ignore his lawyer’s advice. “Of course,” he replies, and lets a small smirk grow on his lips—the sole benefit of being inevitably sentenced to Exile is that he can say essentially whatever he wants, right now. And he’ll never miss an opportunity to get under Alden’s skin.

Predictably, Alden scowls, and has to be calmed by Quinlin holding his hand once again. Somewhere in the back of his mind, Tiergan wonders if Della is in the crowd—he hopes she and Livvy are able to laugh together about this later, rather than linger separately on the sorrow of his fate. The last thing he wants is for his friends to waste their time grieving—but he knows them well enough to know that they’ll each leave this room believing themselves to be alone. 

As Quinlin and Alden lay out their extensive evidence in front of the Council, Tiergan finds himself once again searching for Prentice in the crowd, and is surprised to find his lover staring back at him. There’s something akin to anger, in his eyes—or perhaps grief, Tiergan isn’t quite sure.

I’m sorry, Tiergan repeats, though it’s just another one of the many lies he’s told today. 

No, you’re not. 

There are moments when Tiergan wishes that Prentice didn’t know him so well, that they weren’t the kind of devotion that leads to selfish sacrifices and rash mistakes, but here they are. 

Promise me you’ll try to be happy, Tiergan says. If not for me, for Wylie and Cyrah. For the Moonlark. 

Kenric’s head snaps up at that, and Tiergan curses silently as he remembers that his conversations are likely being monitored. 

I don’t think I can be anything but angry right now, Prentice replies, quietly. You know I love you, darling, I do. But this? This isn’t rational, this is your own ridiculous, rash plan to protect me even when I told you I could handle myself!

Before Tiergan can answer, he’s cut off by Emery asking, “Sir Tiergan, your response to these claims?”

“I confess to all of it,” he says, before Leto can step in with some lie of a defense. He can feel his best friend’s glare boring into his head, but he avoids meeting Leto’s eyes—surely, he’ll understand eventually why Tiergan is doing this. This is for the good of the Black Swan, and the Moonlark, and, most importantly: Prentice, Cyrah, and Wylie. 

“Then the matter is settled,” Emery says, after a moment. “Sir Tiergan Alenefar, you are hereby sentenced to a memory break and Exile. For life.”

A chatter rises within the crowd, and Tiergan rolls his eyes. This isn’t a surprise; he’s a rebel, and therefore a seed of a growing threat to the Council’s power. There was only ever one choice for the Council to make for him. 

Two goblin guards move forward and grab Tiergan’s arms, forcing him to stand up from his seat, and Leto watches him leave with nothing less than pure shock.

We learned yesterday that the Fulton County, Georgia special grand jury roundly rejected the lies of election fraud perpetrated by Donald Trump and his enablers in their effort to hold onto power. “We find by a unanimous vote that no widespread fraud took place in the Georgia 2020 presidential election that could result in overturning that election," the jury asserted in one of several portions of their report released on Thursday.

We also learned that a majority of the jury believes that “one or more witnesses testifying before it” may have committed perjury. Their recommendation: District Attorney Fani Willis should “seek appropriate indictments for such crimes where the evidence is compelling.”

That sounds like good news, progress even, leaving us to wonder what DA Willis meant when she said her decision was imminent. Add to that the announcements this week that Special Counsel Jack Smith had filed subpoenas for former VP Mike Pence and former Chief of Staff Mark Meadows.

Yet after years and years of yearning from those of us who believe that no one should be above the law and that justice delayed is justice denied, the failure to see any indictment for Individual #1—aka the lead insurrectionist, aka Mar-a-Lago’s classified documents robber, aka chief propagandist of the Big Lie of election fraud (to name a few)—has become a source of growing exhaustion and intensified expectation that this will all lead to more delay and more unrequited optimism. O Merrick Garland, wherefore art thou?

With that in mind, I thought it useful to reflect on the fantasizing Mike Pence who somehow imagines that one day he could be President of the United States. You remember this man, the unctuous VP, the servile one, he of the adoring gaze. This was the man who stood by Trump’s side, praising him again and again for his “broad shoulders” and “broad-shouldered leadership.” He did it so often (New York magazine counted 17 times in 2016 and 2017) he had to deny he was fixated on his leader’s masculinity.

That was only one of many exaggerated expressions by Pence of Trump’s special qualities. Even after Trump exploited the pandemic and the struggle to acquire ventilators, masks and other resources to pit governors against governors and prioritize Republicans, Pence served up this laughable claim at the Republican convention in August 2020: “President Trump marshaled the full resources of our federal government from the outset. He directed us to forge a seamless partnership with governors across America in both political parties.”

In that same acceptance speech, Pence also asserted, “The hard truth is...you won’t be safe in Joe Biden’s America. Under President Trump, we will stand with those who stand on the Thin Blue Line.” That was before the deadly insurrection and Capitol attack on January 6, when over 140 police officers were injured—only to be abandoned by Trump who sided with that day’s “patriots.”

And even after that violent day when Pence did his duty and certified the election— even after his life was endangered by an angry mob chanting “Hang Mike Pence” because the man he served incited this ugly threat—the former vice president has refused to serve his country and the Constitution that he professes to love by testifying about what he saw and what he knows.

In the months that followed January 6, 2021, Pence focused on blaming the media for its desire to “demean the character and intentions” of Trump supporters. “I know the media wants to distract from the Biden administration’s failed agenda by focusing on one day in January,” Pence told Fox News’ Sean Hannity.

And when, two years later, he is called by Special Counsel Jack Smith to testify before the grand jury investigating that day? He complains about “Biden’s DOJ subpoena” and plans to argue a novel notion—that he’s immune from testifying as a result of the Constitution’s “speech or debate” clause that protects legislators because he was presiding in the Senate when counting the electoral vote. In other words, slow down the wheels, gum up the works, avoid responsibility.

I urge you to pause and consider: Say your boss incited an angry mob to chant for your murder and your response, then and now, is to protect him from justice. What kind of person would you be?

I get it. He dreams of being president. God forbid he angers the cultist base. God forbid he testifies under oath and tells the truth, providing the necessary witness to finally drive a nail in the Trump coffin. God forbid all those people who were convinced to chant for his hanging might not love him, or worse, won’t vote for him.

Yes, we can spill more ink, spin more pixels and spend more time dissecting the legal calculations, political machinations and character failings that are likely motivating Pence’s failure to act with principle. But at some point, we have to turn from the finer points of logic and law and simply ask:

Have you no self-respect, Mike Pence? Have you no honor, sir? A weary nation beseeches you to do the right thing.

Leon scoffs out a sigh, the action blowing at a few stray bangs from his eyes, his brows grumpily knit as he crosses his arms gently atop his chest, leaning back on the motel bed he'd claimed for his own.

The sound of water running greets his ears, the Shield ambling about in the bathroom in surprising silence. Focused on the task at hand - it surprises the Hunter, but he let's that loose train of thought go with little fight as he shuffles down from a seated position to something far more reclined, a drawn out sigh softly puffing into the air above as his eyes drift shut. He isn't entirely sure just how much time passes before he's roused from his half-asleep state, the fragile balance that he's quick to tumble over at the large hand gently clasping over a shoulder to give him a light shake.

He curses, frowning as he cracks his eyes open to greet warm-toned eyes, ones that brim with amusement & something just as stubborn in their determination to drag him to clean up before he passed out post mission. Still, he doesn't bother moving much, staying where he lay for a second before a sigh leaves him. Arms outstretching the swordsman's way, Leon snorts.

A stupid time to bother with saying it when the other is already pulling him up, carefully maneuvering him so he can guide the gun-blader over with a rumbled laugh & an answer that tells him like hell he's going to let Leon sleep covered in all the days grime. Fair enough. The next few minutes pass by smoothly enough - seated on the toilet's closed lid, he can feel the warmth from the drawn bath water luring him in with the promise of heated steam. With little more fanfare, Leon starts to pry his shirt off, only stuttering with clenched teeth when straining a certain way to lift it's edge over his head incites another flare of pain. He hisses in frustration, stopping. But before he can form another plan, Amicitia moves in to help without being asked, prompting a glance from the gun-blader in thanks.

They couldn't get into the water fast enough. Normally, he'd be insistent on having his space, on waiting even to run his own separate bath. But with how exhausted he is in that moment, the brush in with danger still so fresh on his mind, he finds he craves a gentler touch. One that doesn't strike at him with the intent to harm.

Hands smooth over his bare sides, drawing a pleased rumble from his lips as he leans back against the other's chest, eyes slipping closed in a rare show of trust. They massage lightly along his hips, slipping back up slowly with a featherlight touch that lulls him further into a butter melted state. It's when they suddenly stop that he finds himself huffing, tilting his head back to peer with glacial-toned sights at the Shield in question.

"Oh, trust me, it looks even dumber than it sounds. But it works. And it's easier on your knees than doing it the right way. You ready?" he looked at the treadmill, inclined at 3% grade as if it was Everest itself, and looked back at her. "I'll start slow." she raised her eyebrows at him.

"You know just what to say to a girl." he teased as he stepped up, still gingerly, even after eight weeks of therapy. Crutches mercifully jettisoned two weeks ago. He was on his way to being his fighting fit self. With a foot on either track beside the belt, but facing away from the control panel, he waited for her to press start. He took a breath and nodded.

"Test the belt with your bad foot first, and then when you're ready, step down with it. Remember what I've told you about which foot should lead when ascending and descending stairs or hills?"

"Good go to Heaven, Bad go to Hell. So I go up with the good leg and go down with the bad leg."

"A+ student. Okay, when you're ready…any time…Sy, this is an hour session…I have to kick you out in 55 minutes…chop chop." she cajoled him, but he wasn't budging.

"It feels…weird going this way, Shane." If she had been a less kind person, she would have called it whining…she called it nothing, instead.

"I know. Do you need to walk backwards around the clinic a little more to get you used to that sensation?"

"Hell yeah. If that means you're gonna spot me like you did before…felt kinda like dancin'." it was a perfectly legitimate and above-board treatment strategy. They stood back to back, Shane guiding Sy as he practiced walking backward and pushing off with the extensor muscle group, which had been weak. Sy had suggested holding hands, but Shane had compromised with the idea to link arms. Not that she wasn't dying to hold his hand…she was. But that had not been the time. The time was still weeks away. At least.

"I was thinking I'd have you try it with Jordan. He's got a free hour right now. And I can assess your technique. How does that sound, Twinkle Toed Romeo?" Immediately he placed a tentative foot down onto the slow moving belt trying to adjust to the odd sensation of walking up a hill backward.

"Ah, so I now know that all I have to do to get you to do something silly is threaten you with Jordan. Filing that away for a rainy day."

"Come on, you're breakin' my heart, sunshine."

"Aww, don't be ridiculous. I've seen therapists do way more embarrassing things to their patients in the name of treatment."

"Tell me!"

"Sorry, but it's classified information. Protected under the Health Insurance Privacy and Portability Act. I could literally get fired for telling you, and there are way cooler things to get fired for!" She'd always said it. And she meant it. She didn't fool around when it came to HIPPA, and there was no way she was gonna lose her job over a stupid slip like that.

She thought for a few minutes. She used to have a list.

"Hmm, telling off my bitch of a boss," he looked shocked at her use of a bad language word, which he'd never heard from her. She nodded. "Telling off an asshole patient," sleeping with a patient…

"What about sleeping with a patient?" It was late in the day, the only person still there was Heather in the office, and a few therapists still documenting. Nobody in the gym to hear him echo the thoughts in her head. As if he could read them as clearly as a page in a book. Large print. She looked at him in shock.

"Sorry. That was over the line."

"It was…but…"

"But?"

"But…it would not be the least cool reason to get fired."

"It wouldn't?" she shook her head, reluctantly.

"Especially if the patient was…amazing, and kind, and…fucking gorgeous…"

"Young lady, that language today, I have never!" he exclaimed clutching at his broad and beautiful chest.

"I know, but, Sy…this is all hypothetical, and theoretical, and IF I was GOING to get fired how would I CHOOSE for it to happen and WHAT policy I would go against. People don't just CHOOSE to be fired, you know?" she was nervous and rambling.

"You know what people also don't choose? Who they care about, and have feelin's for. Who they--"

"Don't finish that sentence, Sy." She couldn't hear him say the word he was going to say. She couldn't let him start that. Not when there was too much complicating their situation.

She walked off to her treatment room, needing some space.  Some time.

She didn't get that space or time. Sy hobbled in behind her, looking like a man on a mission. And she knew from his war stories that his missions tended to be successful…even the one that got him his walking papers wasn't a total loss.

"Sy, you still had like, five minutes on the tr--"

His big hands found the sweet spot where her neck met her skull. He took a big breath and closed the distance between them, his lips landing light as feathers on hers, her soft skin welcoming the roughness of his beard, though everything else about the kiss was terribly gentle. Almost chaste. Even his beard wasn't so rough that she worried about beard burn…she'd be filing that away for later, as well. Against her willpower and better judgement but in full cooperation with her desires and instincts she began kissing him back, daring to deepen it by opening their mouths a bit, and sliding her hands up the back of his red tee that sported a black skull. All of his shirts were entirely too tight, but you'd never catch her complaining. Even after several months away from active duty and really, most activity at all, his body was still so solid and powerful.

"Ain't that a daisy…Fuck, I've wanted to do that since my first appointment." he chuckled, lightly.

"Sy…"

"Don't. Don't try to argue or tell me you don't feel it. This energy between us. I've seen it in your eyes, Shane. I've felt it when you touch me. It ain't nothin, sunshine. It's a whole lotta somethin'."

"I know, but I need this job. And I WANT this job. Being a therapist is the only thing I've ever wanted to do. Helping people. People like you. Getting them better. It's what I was meant to do. And there's no place like this in the area for me to treat such a diverse clientele and build my skill set. It's not without it's problems, but it's where I'm meant to be."

"I get that. And you should do what you were called to do. You're too good at this not to do it. But Shane, isn't it worth pushing back on some policy if it could mean you get to have some personal happiness, too?"

"I'm worried they'll make me choose." Actually, it was more than that. She was worried about which choice she'd make. Giving up a ten-year career with excellent benefits despite its pitfalls, or giving up someone she could hardly stop thinking about, who made her heart pound when he smiled, and who was rapidly shaping up to be someone she could see herself sharing a life with…making either choice terrified her for very different reasons.

"You shouldn't have to choose. Any boss who'd make you deny yourself what we could have just because of some ridiculous policy…well, they ain't worth the gas that brought 'em to work today. Y'understand me?"

She nodded, smirking at his idiom, "You don't know my boss."

"Well, maybe I oughta GET to know her, if it's like that. I have a way of throwin' my weight around, case ya hadn't noticed." he shot her a smug grin.

"Ya don't say?" she retorted, brimming with sarcasm, literally still wrapped in the evidence of said weight in the form of his muscular arms, warm and thick, encircling her. Even though she felt like her life was up in the air, she had never felt more safe. "I'll try to have a chat with her about it this week. Our schedules rarely align, and usually that's how I like it, but I'll try to move some things around if nothing naturally falls into place."

"I'll be happy to lend my voice or even come talk to her, if need be." he offered, ever the gentleman.

"I appreciate that, Sy, truly. But I think it would be best not to involve you unless it becomes absolutely necessary. We have several more treatments to get through today, though. You didn't finish on the tread mill, do you think you're warmed up enough?"

"Oh, darlin', I'm plenty warm." he grinned down at her sliding a hand down her side.

"Shit, am I gonna have to start being extra careful with what I say to you until this gets sorted?"

"I really doubt it'll matter, Shane. Ain't much you can say I can't make dirty." she could tell by the satisfaction on his face that this was a point of pride for him.

"Lay down and shut up."

"Yes, MA'AM!" he complied with a little too much enthusiasm. She didn't know whether to roll her eyes with amusement or grow increasingly feral…apparently there was room for both as long as she didn't act on the latter. Yet.

She dismissed Sy for the day, instructing him to behave himself until she gave him the all clear, and even then, if she got the green light to see him outside of therapy, sessions would still be about getting him stronger, and not flirting. Or at least mostly. They settled on a 90/10 ratio by the end. She was a weak woman.

She went into the office where one of the senior therapists, Anita, was still charting and snacking on some pretzels.

"How was your day, Nita?" she asked affectionately. Anita had been her mentor since she started with the clinic over ten years ago, and was now part time, flexing toward retirement. She'd miss her.

"Oh, long, Miss Shane. As they tend to be more and more these days. What about yours?"

"Ah…just…nothin'." she shouldn't go into it all until she talked to Susan, their boss.

"Mmm, that's no nothing nothin', that's a something nothin'. Come on, kiddo. Spill." she offered Shane one of her pretzels and kicked out the chair next to her. Again, she was a weak woman. She took a pretzel, sat, and chewed it for a moment, collecting her words.

"What do you think about…starting relationships with patients?" she searched her reaction for any snap judgement or emotion, but only a narrowing of her eyes occurred.

"Is this about that Captain Sexypants who just left?"

"I'm going to kill Heather. I'm not the one who came up with that nickname and I'm not the one who started the whole having feelings conversation. I was going to be miserable until he was discharged, at least."

"Why would you need to make yourself miserable, Shane?"

"Because the policy. About dating patients."

"Technically the policy only says you shouldn't treat family/close friends if you feel you wouldn't be able to maintain objectivity or would be uncomfortable yourself. But that you should disclose any relationship to your supervisor for review."

"See, what's Susan gonna say?"

"Who cares? The policy is the law. And the board of directors governs the policy. Not her. Tell her in an email if you can't work out a time to talk to her before you see him next. Hell, I sent my boss a memo back when I started dating Ron. And look at us now! 20 years strong."

"No way!?" Shane was flabbergasted. She had never known that Anita's husband Ron had once been her patient.

"Oh yes. I wasn't long out of PT school, my first husband had passed away and I needed an income, so I got my PT license and about a year into working here, Ron got put on my schedule. I knew from the eval, he was meant for me. So I typed up a memo, sent it to Morton, our boss at the time, and told Ron I was free on Friday after work."

"Sy just…I don't know, we have this…connection…a spark. I've never felt it with anyone else."

"Are you concerned that seeing him socially would affect how you treat him here?"

"I'm more worried keeping my feelings for him bottled up while I treat him will get so distracting I'll become less effective."

"Well, then, if you get any push back, tell Susan that." Anita said. "Just be forthright. Honest. And speak with integrity. She'll have no cause to refute it, then. And send it tonight."

"Okay. Thanks Anita. You're the best."

Shane spent too long, probably an hour, at least, drafting her email to Susan. It read:

To: Susan DeForrest

From: Shane Benton

Subject: Re: Treatment Policy

Susan,

I wanted to bring to your attention a situation that has presented itself with one of my patients. I have been treating him almost exclusively for several weeks now, apart from my week on PTO, and he has progressed to both of our satisfaction as well as the ordering physician. However, we have come to be quite friendly and he has expressed great interest in seeing me outside of therapy. This is something that I too would like to engage in, and I plan to accept the next time I speak with him.

From my understanding of the policy, the only thing that would prevent me from treating him as a social acquaintance would be my own comfort level and ability to remain objective. I have every confidence that my objectivity regarding his case will remain intact. I am also completely comfortable with it, and if that changes, I will transfer him to another therapist. Furthermore, I have no doubts that I will be able to maintain the highest level of professionalism throughout our treatments.

The Doctor sat patiently in the chair as Warfarin went about the preparations for his weekly Oripathy examination. As a scientist (in a way) himself, knowing that the renowned Dr. Blood was willing to perform these routine examinations was humbling - after all, the advancements in hematology with minimal assistance…Of course, some of that might be thanks to her vampirism, but that had never bothered him.

“Everything is in place,” she announced amidst the Doctor’s contemplations. “You’re ready as well, I assume?”

“Correct...Warfarin, can I ask you a personal question?”

As she walked over to him with a needle, Warfarin nodded. “Of course.”

“I understand that you often drink blood from bags,” he mused, “but without them, you’d have to drink directly from the subject, if I’m not mistaken?”

“You’re not...If you wish to continue this discussion, maybe it should wait until I’ve drawn the necessary sample.”

The Doctor acquiesced. “Sure. Can I ask a different question?”

“Quite inquisitive today, aren’t you?” She sighed as she delicately stuck the needle into his arm. “Usually my patients refuse to converse, doing their best not to look terrified - or, of course, they’re incapacitated, but that’s neither here or there. What else are you wondering?”

“I was looking through the disciplinary documentation, and apparently you’re not allowed to come near me in a non-medical context for some reason...could you tell me anything about that?”

Warfarin took a sharp breath. “Another question that should wait a moment.”

“As you wish.” He watched her as she stared at the needle, a strange look in her eyes. “Hmm.”

“What is it?”

The Doctor smiled. “Nothing that can’t wait.”

“Well then.” She removed the needle and set a clump of absorbent material over the now-leaking hole. “Pressure. A few more minutes, if you don’t mind.”

“Of course.” His hand brushed hers for a moment...It was surprisingly warm, despite the rumors.

When Warfarin returned with a bandage, she seemed nervous to the Doctor. “Compression applied. Normally this would mean you must leave my office immediately, but as this contact is being made of your own volition, it should be okay. Perhaps, to be safe, we should start with the second question, so you understand the risks.”

“Risks?” Light danced behind the Doctor’s eyes. “Warfarin, what do you mean?”

“The restraining order was put in place because...because I want your blood, Doctor.” She took a seat on a rolling stool next to the patient’s chair, her hands pressing into her lap.

He leaned forward. “Is that unusual? You sustain yourself on blood and have devoted yourself to researching its properties as both a Sarkazian scientist and a sort of vampiric sommelier, if I’m not mistaken.”

“Sommeli-” Shock joined the mix of emotions in her glances. “You read those papers?”

“Sarkazians interest me greatly - the variety of body types would suggest you’re not a single race after all, but a coalition of different races classified as such by the fearful and unscientific, and the vampire branch in particular...Besides, your opinion is important to me, both in scientific fields and other things.”

Warfarin averted her eyes. “This must be a result of your amnesia, Doctor, because I don’t believe you could feel this way if you knew all the things I attempted-”

“Let me guess.” The Doctor stepped out of the patient’s chair and perched himself on another stool, closer to the vials of blood, which he moved back to Warfarin as she once again avoided looking at him. “Despite your best efforts to restrain yourself, there’s some chemical combination in my circulatory system that triggers a primal response from you - you have to have a taste, but you know that once that first drop crosses the threshold, there would be nothing to stop you from draining me dry, and yet the sheer force of this urge pushed you to acts that go against Rhodes Island’s ethical policies. The old me, or perhaps those in charge of ensuring his safety, saw this as too great a risk to my health, and so they prohibited all unnecessary contact between us. How much of that is true?”

“...All of it. If only I could isolate the compound that makes you smell so delicious- no, no, I shouldn’t think like that. I know I wouldn’t be able to contain myself.”

He smiled. “You’re doing a good job of it now, aren’t you?”

“I...” She forced herself to look at him. “Doctor, I think you should leave.”

“And I think I should stay. My first question remains - how do you feed from a person directly?”

Warfarin was silent for a moment before she started stamping her feet against the ground. “No, no, no, this isn’t happening, this isn’t happening!”

“Warfarin.” His voice was authoritative but coaxing, as if he were trying to convince a child to relinquish a toy. “Warfarin, it’s okay. Just answer the question for me.”

“I would use my teeth to cut into somewhere on your body, preferably hairless, and lick and suck on the wound as it bleeds. As my name suggests, my saliva is a natural anticoagulant...Doctor, please go. This teasing is too much for me to handle.”

He rolled close enough to grab her hand. “It’s not teasing, Warfarin. I want to know what I’m signing up for.”

“Signing up?” Her eyes widened. “Doctor, have you not been listening?”

“You seem to have forgotten what I can do; if your actions become life-threatening, I am more than capable of removing the danger. I trust you to know both my limits and yours, though.”

Warfarin simply stared. “Why? What gives you such confidence in me?”

“It’s simple, really - I know your work.” He moved closer with each sentence. “I know how much your body will let you drain from me, and it’s not enough to be harmful.” Inches from her face at this point. “And most importantly, I find the idea of you feeding from me so attractive that I can’t force myself away.” Saying that, the Doctor went in for the kill, kissing her square on the lips.

She wasn’t just warm - she was feverishly hot. Rather than reciprocate, Warfarin pushed him away, their stools amplifying the force and leaving them on opposite sides of the office.

“I can’t.” She weakly asserted.

“Can’t or won’t?” He started rolling back towards her. “What’s stopping you? I’m willing, and we’d both enjoy it, so what keeps you wanting to hold back?”

Warfarin shook her head. “If I let the pleasure of feeding become entangled with romance, I’ll end up like the others of my kind - insatiable, relentless predators who commit unspeakable acts to keep their cold hearts feeling some kind of adrenaline rush.”

“You seem pretty warm to me.”

“Stop it! I’m serious!” She crossed her arms. “This is as much for your own good as it is mine.”

The Doctor glanced at the door and back to her. “You can’t simply use me as your sole meal provider?”

“I need to drink three liters of blood in a day to maintain normal functions. That would kill you.”

“What about if you synthesized artificial blood using mine as the model?” He smiled. “I know you could do that with the facilities on base.”

Warfarin sighed. “You are pushing far too much for this to happen for you to be in a healthy state of mind-”

“I’m not.”

“Huh?” She blinked. “You know you’re in an excited state, then?”

The Doctor, his usual uniform hanging from the door, wearing a red T-shirt, couldn’t hide anything from her at this point. “You’ve brought me to this excited state, Warfarin. Now that I’ve had a taste of you, I don’t want to stop.”

“Doctor...Now you understand, then.”

“Just- just one more kiss, please, that’s all I’m asking for.” He grabbed his head in his hands. “Just the one, and I promise, I’ll-”

Warfarin stood from her stool, growing agitated herself. “You feel it now, don’t you? The inexplicable desire, the primal imperative, the cravings. It’s unbearable, isn’t it?”

“Just...just one more...please...”

“I have been fighting the urge for months while you were in that clinic in Chernobog, forcing myself to stay here while your body was just lying there, hooked up to IVs and all sorts of life support.” She wrung her hands. “It would have been so easy, so so easy to just take what I wanted, but I kept my distance for your sake. “You don’t have to drink my blood, then,” he muttered, “just let me hold you, caress you, feel your heat against my skin...”

Warfarin smiled. “To think this is the reward for my patience. Doctor, I’m offering you one more chance to escape.”

“Escape what?!” The Doctor leapt to his feet, hands balled into fists. “Go back to my daily life a tortured soul? Hmm? Are you so sadistic that you want me to suffer for the harm another, more foolish personality in this body caused you? Could you be so cruel after the oaths you’ve taken? Could you?!”

“I could be...oh, who am I kidding.” She pounced, picking him up and tossing him onto the patient bed and following shortly thereafter.

The delight in his eyes was infectious. “Finally, you’ve come to your senses!”

“Oh, no, Doctor.” There was no mistaking the hungry stare now. “I’ve completely lost them. All thanks to you.”

Considering what happened that afternoon, the fact that the Doctor was able to walk out afterwards with nothing but a dull headache spoke to his resilience; the further reality that he left to carry Warfarin off to his room announced the breakdown that had already begun. This was a star-crossed love if ever there had been one...and somehow, for all the catastrophizing the two of them would do over the next week as they debated coming clean, things turned out alright. Kal’tsit was reluctant to revoke the restraining order, but after the Doctor’s reaction to this news was noticeably more dangerous to his health then the alternative, she assigned him a counselor and relented. Warfarin became his personal assistant, continuing her research from his office, and those who knew her said that she was substantially more satisfied with life. Somehow, they salvaged a happy ending from something so accursed...

This Doctor’s tale is a cautionary one - after all, most Sarkaz vampires are far less noble in their intentions and means.

Book Twenty-Five: Misery

Informal survey... what’s a worse idea at this point, reading Misery while in quarantine, or The Shining? 

Discuss.

Personally, I think The Shining has a slight edge over Misery. And as a writer (go buy Her Dangerous Secret today! Free on Kindle Unlimited!); that’s saying something. 

I’ve never read Misery before, and I’ve never (gasp!) seen the movie. I know, sacrilegious for a woman who claims to be a pretty major Steve fan. I knew the basic story, and Kathy Bates as Annie Wilkes is legit terrifying. I really didn’t expect to get anything new out of the book. But I was mistaken.  

Misery is the story of famous writer Paul Sheldon, who wakes up from a drugged sleep with broken legs, a shattered pelvis, and very few memories of how it happened. He’s being “cared for” by Annie Wilkes, his number one fan. I’d also classify her as his biggest fan, because Annie is a large, intimidating woman. Annie claims she was driving home from Sidewinder (yes, Sidewinder where The Overlook Hotel was located), and saw Paul’s car in a ditch. She “rescued” him and is in the process of nursing him back to health. She’s quasi-qualified to do this, because she used to be a nurse... but people in her care kept mysteriously falling dead. Gulp.

While she’s keeping him drugged on pain pills which she has scattered all over her house like candy (NOT FDA approved, just FYI), she’s also reading his most recent novel, Misery’s Child. She adores all his Misery books; which is ironic since Paul killed Misery Chastain off in Misery’s Child, and was celebrating the fact he could move onto new and interesting characters. 

Let’s take a brief sidebar... Steve puts on his pharmacist/pain specialist hat in this book. In the intro, he says, “There is, of course, no such drug as Novril, but there are several codeine-based drugs similar to it, and unfortunately, hospital pharmacies and medical practice dispensaries are sometimes lax in keeping such drugs under tight lock and close inventory...” 

Codeine? How quaint. Welcome to the age of Purdue pharma, and now keeping oxy samples in a safe. My day job is working in pharmaceuticals... particularly selling a drug that helps with opioid induced constipation (my job is literally shit, people). Anyone who has taken oxy or vicodin for a knee or shoulder surgery knows how real constipation is. So, when Steve delved into that topic, I had to snort. Literally. My post-it note reads, “Snort”. 

Anyway, Annie finishes Misery’s Child, and is NOT happy. So unhappy, she basically holds Paul hostage, and forces him to write another Misery book on a clunky typewriter missing the letter “n”. 

Guys... this is the moment you realize Steve isn’t just a paperback writing hack. He’s got talent. The typewriter is a metaphor for Paul.  It’s a little used up, it’s missing a few keys, but it can still write. And when it does write, Paul claims it sounds like a gunslinger. Boom.  As Paul’s time in captivity wears on, more letters fall off the typewriter (kinda like Paul’s foot and finger... spoiler!); and it’s ultimately the tool used to bring Annie down. This is more than a story about a writer being held hostage by his number one fan, it’s downright literary. It almost makes up for the shit show that was Christine. 

Come to find out, Annie has a history of killing people, and a scrapbook documenting it all. To quote Paul, “...Annie Wilkes was totally off the beam...” She even killed a photographer on his way to The Overlook to get some shots of the charred remains. Paul finds the scrapbook and realizes he’s in sixteen different kinds of trouble. He knows his only hope is police officers finding his car abandoned on the side of the road. Hopefully they’ll ask questions, they’ll remember Annie’s murderous ways, and they’ll come question her. 

That’s exactly what happens! 

And then Annie (literally) mows the cop down with her riding lawnmower. It reminded me so much of the end of Cujo... the suspense was so taut, and they were so close to freedom... but so far away. 

Fucking Annie. 

Paul finishes his newest Misery book, and admits it’s the best thing he’s ever written. Too bad he needs to start it on fire in order to escape Annie. It was fitting when he was shoving the ashes of the burned manuscript down her throat, yelling, “Here’s your book, Annie!” 

Goddamn, that’s some good writing. 

Paul escapes, the cops show up in time, and Annie is dead. Paul lives to write another day. 

You might notice I left out some of the more graphic bits of this book. That happened on purpose. I read those scenes, winced, and had no desire to read them, or think about them again. Once again, the mark of a talented horror writer. Misery was first published in 1987, and it’s still as terrifying as it was then. This is my twenty-fifth book in this reading challenge, and my favorite one so far. The writing was crisp, the metaphors thoughtful, and the terror aplenty. Well done, Steve.

But much like Roland’s journey to the Dark Tower, it’s the journey and not the final destination.
