Clint’s not sure what exactly set Barnes off. Not sure what he thinks is going on, or what he’s seeing. He is positive, however, that this is a terrible time for whatever the hell’s going on in that fucked up head of his. Thankfully, Clint’d had the forethought to drag the guy out of the way, into a shadow-filled alley, a few seconds ago, when he’d first noticed Barnes starting to get antsy. God knows what he might do in a crowd of people.

Now, Clint’s got his back to a wall, a knife to his throat, and this is not a position he likes to be in. He can handle his own in a fight, is well-trained and agile as hell, but there’s not an easy way out of the hold Barnes has him in, and Clint’s not stupid enough to think he can take the Winter Soldier on in a fight and win. So he stays where he is. Doesn’t make any sudden movements and keeps his hands where they can be seen, ignoring his racing pulse.

“You have terrible timing.” His voice is low, remains calm, his gaze locked onto unseeing, glaring eyes. He swallows, and there’s enough pressure on the knife that a bead of blood wells up beneath the blade and slowly rolls down the column of his throat. Fantastic. He’s going to get his throat slit by his fake husband on their fake honeymoon. Awesome.

“Your name is James Buchanan Barnes. I’m Clint Barton. We’re on a mission, pretending to be newlyweds on our honeymoon. It’s stupid and you complain a lot but you aren’t in any danger, right now. You’re safe, Barnes.” The only one in danger here is Clint. “Otoydi, soldat.” The switch to Russian is a gamble, and he's not exactly fluent, but Clint’s flying blind here. He’s just hoping to hell it doesn’t wind up setting him off worse.

Things had been going fairly well since Kate moved into the Avengers Tower with her new pet, Jeff. She got to train with the Avengers which was an absolute thrill for her, having been big fans of them since she was a kid. Captain America even said she had great potential which made her entire month.

Besides that, Jeff was getting along as well. He and Lucky were good buddies- she was still working on him and the cats, but that's okay. He was almost like a puppy but in a shark's body, just super playful and always gnawing on things. So he had plenty of toys and Kate took him swimming every day, which they both loved.

Tonight was pizza night with her and Clint, where they would hang out, watch TV and just kinda horse around and chat. Sometimes Bucky and Nat would join too.

Kate picked up some pizza from the local pizzeria and made her way to Clint's apartment and went in after unlocking the door.

"I'm here!" She called out, kicking the door closed behind her. "Hey, guys!" She smiled at the dogs that came up to her, moving to the kitchen where she set the box down. Now with her hands free, she bent down and properly greeted the furry friends.

IT WAS A BAD IDEA,  AND EXTREMLY BAD IDEA.    However there weren’t many places Clint could have gone without getting noticed,  or rather before he was going to end up bleeding out on the balcony of some unfortunate soul,  yeah,  that was probably not the surprise anyone wanted to find first thing in the morning when opening their curtains.    Therefore while not optimal due to the risk of either getting a gun pointed to his face or getting a taste of metal against his nose,  it was the safest option.    Ah,  hilarious,  wasn’t it  ?

And there Clint was,  breaking into @shatterxdsouls​’s place through the window and ready for whatever was going to be thrown his way,  except nothing happened.    Silence stretching around him as sky blue hues adjusted to the darkness that surrounded the place.    One step,  two steps,  and at the third one he figured the other might not be home,  not yet at least.    A sigh falling from cut lips and he found himself dropping his equipment to the floor.

Bathroom.    He needed to get his side fixed otherwise this little break & entering situation was going to be pointless,  wasn’t it  ?    Eyes narrowed when he finally turned the light of the bathroom on,  and he found himself reaching for his hearing aids,  pausing for a moment,  he should have kept them on,  really,  but his head felt like he was about the explode at any given second as it was and even the silence felt far too loud in that moment,  so he took them off,  carefully placing them above the sink.

Bloody shirt taken off and thrown on the floor before he reached for the towel to press against his still bleeding wound,  he was going to pay James back for it,  a mental note made.    Now it was only a matter to find the first aid kit or whatever the other had around,  and there were no doubts that he had those kind of things,  after all patching oneself up was sort of a normal occurrence for people like them.

He had finally said his goodbyes to Karen and Foggy for the night after what was probably the first successful night out between the three of them in.. quite awhile. The tension was still there- But he was happy just to have them both in his life again. He had just exited the bar and walked down the street towards his apartment when he heard a loud, indistinguishable crash.. In a dumpster he was all too familiar with.

He hurried towards the sound,setting his cane aside momentarily to see who was there. He didn't recognize the heartbeat- But he could, however hear the strained, uneven breathing due to three cracked ribs, and said person being knocked out cold. He sighed, pushing his cane into a folded up position and hooking it to his belt loop, before slowly dragging the stranger out of the dumpster with a bit of strain; dead weight was harder to lift, and this was no light man, muscular arms and a toned body.. as he dragged him out, he hooked his arms under his legs and began to carry the unconscious man towards his apartment. If they ended up being bad news, then... well.

They'd cross that bridge when they came to it.

The door opens to Artemis, which was a friendship he lied to his therapist about being totally normal and not superhero related at all. Whatever her deal with the Archives was something, to which he tried to think less about, and simply accept. ❝ Ha !! Yeah, that totally doesn't hurt my feelings at all. ⸻ ❞ He lies, and okay, perhaps that is an exaggeration and the next thing he is going to say will be even more of an exaggeration.

          WORDS MATTERED.    Perhaps just as much as actions did,  and at times even more.     One word could very easily make or break a person,  he watched that happen time and time again.    Mind lost in thoughts and old memories while he watched Kate train,  a hum leaving his mouth now and then,  followed by a pointer,  not that she really needed it,  especially when he knew just how much she worked hard to get where she was;  when he watched get there,  getting up every single time she was knocked down.    Perhaps,  it was exactly that that prompted him to speak,  to tell her that he was proud of her and of how far she had come.    A truth,  one that deserved to be spoken & heard.

          And yet,  her reaction brought from a chuckle from him,  a brow raising.    ❝  Well,  if you wanted to thank me you could have got the center of that bullseye.  ❞    There was a hint of teasing behind his tone,  his way of trying to get her to smile,  having noticed the way her eyes were shining.    It was only moments later that a hand reached to scratch the back of his neck,  head shaking ever so slightly.    ❝  You taught me quite the few things too,  so I believe we are even.  ❞    The smile upon his features a genuine one.    ❝  We make quite the good team.  ❞

616 / main verse + divergence.

Finally writing my 616 verse up. Most 616 centric comics up until the 2016 era are canon and then we start going heavily canon divergent from Civil War 2 and onwards. Instances of my 616 verse are specific and separate between rp partners, each post, and ships but some things remain always canon.

-> CW2 is handled very different and leans more into Government/Corrupt Politicians versus Superheroes. Clint does kill Bruce Banner, he does go on trial, and his reasoning is a lot more personal to himself and his long friendship with Bruce Banner; no one but Bruce and him truly know why he did it.

-> Occupy Avengers is vastly divergent, but the team of Red Wolf, Clint Barton, Nighthawk, Tilda, and Wheels going around solving problems does happen.

-> We ignore Secret Empire's existence and other marvel events from 2016 to Devil's Reign.

-> Kate's West Coast Avengers does happen and is mostly the same.

-> Carnage event with Clint, Cap, Spiderman, Logan, and Thing does happen.

-> Hawkeye: Freefall is canon and mostly untouched in changes made

-> Thunderbolts 2022 is largely changed that should it even count as happening? Clint is not leader of this TBs, but he is on the team

-> The jury is out on Black Widow & Hawkeye (2024), but signs point to non-canon or heavily divergent.

-> The rest of this post is detailing the this blog canon-divergent events from 2016 comics to 2022 comics.

Following the events of his acquittal for the killing of Bruce, Clint Barton goes on a long trip across the country. He travels from state to state, bar hopping, and trying to solve every day problems of average citizens. He ends with small team of lost souls along the way. His roadside hero days end when Kate Bishop calls for his help in setting up her own West Coast Avengers. Eventually, the call comes in for him to help Captain America with a crisis which lands him back in New York, which he had been staying away from.

This goes poorly as the city has changed, such as Wilson Fisk is now mayor. New York and what has happened to Superheroes is a big trigger for him, and it leads to excessive drinking and vigilantism. The pardoning of a known crime boss he had just busted leads to Clint starting guerilla warfare, while masked as Ronin himself, against the Hood. After his defeat of the Hood, Clint flees New York ago and goes on another soul searching journey, now a pariah amongst many of his friends.

The next time that Clint returns to New York, is after an accident and crisis of life he had while on the road. Things have hopefully cooled down, moved on from his Ronin stunts and Clint's trying to fix his life, cut back on drinking, go sober (he's barely managing three months), and make a real change with himself. Make amends with his friends, with the Avengers, and find his place back in superhero society. Luke Cage is now mayor and offers him a way to do superheroics by the book as being part of the reclaimed NYC Thunderbolts, in hopes to repair New York's relationship with superheroes.

After a relapse early on with his new Thunderbolts team and a very heavy phone call with Bobbi, Clint attempts going sober fully again and this time with help. Present day Clint is struggling still with everything, trying to get back on good diet and workout routine, manage sobriety and self care, as well as battle with the internal war of his feelings about being on a super team and pondering if street level vigilantism may be his path in life now, and making amends with his friends and the avengers.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

-> To keep with his sobriety, Clint has the help of two friends, of whom he'll call his sponsors, @danversiism & @thefleetsfinest

-> Lucky is with him most of the team instead of Lucky being with Kate; the dog has been trained by him after all to be a disability aid (hearing dog), given Lucky tends to let him know when someone at the door as well as helps him feel secure in his home (dog will alert to intruders if he is sleeping) or comes with him on when he goes out in the world without his hearing aids in

-> Clint has three therapists in total since trying to put his life back together, manage his depression and adhd, cope with his trauma, and stick to sobriety. The first one was Lynette, who eventually he had move on from (she moved out of country), a second one who shall not be named because he was not a good fit, and this third, most recent one is Johanna.

He glares, but seeing as he’s also currently picking bits of garbage out of his hair, it’s not as effective as it could have been. “Gee, thanks. I hadn’t noticed.” The garbage is promptly thrown at Bucky's face (and Clint never misses) because screw him. Clint’s very clearly had a shit day—he’s got two black eyes, a busted lip, his head is bleeding, his body’s beat to hell, probably sporting a few cracked ribs, and he’s pretty sure he’s got garbage in his ass crack—and Barnes suddenly has jokes? Has decided to be funny? Nah, no thank you, Clint does not need the sass, today. All he wants is to fix his bow, take a nap, and have a long, hot shower, not necessarily in that order. “Was there an actual reason you came here, or was it just to make fun of me?”

This is a sideblog, and I follow back from my main @grimmusings. Please direct IMs there, since it's easier for me to keep all my messages on one blog. It's also easier to start interactions with me there, where I regularly post open starters and meme prompts. For a full list of rules, see my main. In general, I follow an MCU timeline with Steve and mix in comics connections/plots as needed, unless specified in an AU verse. All details vary based on verse, and I'm happy to write him into AUs and fandom crossovers. However, I do not include Endgame/Old!Steve in any of my interpretations unless it's a fix-it verse. Regardless of verse, I pretty much always include Steve's Remender comics backstory of an abusive, alcoholic father, but I default on his MCU history with Bucky and transformation into Captain America.

This is by no means a comprehensive list, and I can roll with most muses as far as basic interactions. I'm happy to ship Steve with other Marvel characters and OCs/fandom crossovers based on chemistry, but unless they're on my OTP list, they need plotting and interaction first. My main motivation for making my blog is because I’ve noticed a lack of male reader and/or gender neutral reader works for many of the characters that I love, but also because writing is one of my favorite pastimes.

I won’t lie, I do tend to oscillate between characters and fandoms that I’m motivated to write for, but I will try my best to maintain or improve the quality of each piece that I write.

1.  Max was late.

From Running With Scissors, a Harringrove A/B/O wherein Billy gets the crap beat out of him by Neil, and gets subsequently adopted by Steve Harrington.

2.  In the elevator, he slips up. 

From Fools Rush In, my long-running, life-eating wintershieldbones A/B/O wherein Brock Rumlow finds himself pregnant and out of a job since HYDRA exploded, and decides fuck it- if Rogers won’t help him, he’ll do it himself.  Then the Soldier attaches himself to him and things get really fun.

3.  It’s a beautiful day for a late lunch in Stark Tower, and Cameron’s crossing the main lobby into the food court, laptop case swinging and humming a merry (off-key) tune, when he hears it.

From Objects in the Rearview Mirror, wherein Cameron Klein (the guy who refuses to launch Insight even with Rumlow’s gun on him) is having a lovely day at Stark Towers, only to encounter Agent Rumlow again about his own business.  In the Fools Rush In universe.

4.   May, '86 It’s spring, warm and bright and it’s like the air itself just makes things get sticky.

From Summer By My Side, where a teenaged Brock Rumlow and his boyfriend fool around in the locker room.  Prequel to Fools Rush In ‘verse, and to Only Ever A Fool’s Hope.

5.  He doesn't beat his head against the wall because that would only bring down the tranqs and the straps, and he wants what little freedom he has. 

From Small Favors, a non-a/b/o mpreg of Brock Rumlow stuck in an experimental facility and getting rescued by the Winter Soldier, who has some fellow-feeling for someone going through what he’s undergone.

6.  Little Lan Min reaches out a chubby hand towards the light that pierces the sky, bundled up against the arctic cold and pressed to a fur-lined breastplate.

From Sun Child, a collection of shorts from LJ days, wherein fic memes sprouted like weeds and it was amazing.  Princess Zura of the Fire Nation is in exile with her young daughter, butting up against many of the familiar situations we know from the show itself.

7.  Brock spends the trip out to the Lemurian Star with a bucket and his breakfast in his hand. 

From Only Ever A Fool’s Hope, a kink-meme fill about Brock Rumlow finding out he’s pregnant on the eve of Project Insight, then getting blown out of a building and losing it. First line taken from Bounding Main’s song, ‘Where Were You When The Ship Hit The Sand’

8.  The Soldier is flagging. 

From Ash, another kink-meme fill from way back when.  A/B/O, HYDRA trash, the Winter Soldier is pregnant and that cannot be allowed to continue. 

9.  The op goes south, and Clint finds himself in a hole with an assassin (not himself, despite Tony’s assertions his time in the circus does not leave him with a case of third-personism, thank you), and no way out. 

From Sanctuary, wherein Clint Barton and the Winter Soldier have hot sniper hate sex and then have to deal with the aftermath of some of the other modifications HYDRA made to him.  Non A/B/O mpreg,  Also, back in the days when I could finish something!
