What do you think would be Harry Potter's name if he was a girl? Or if he had a sister?

This reminds me of another ask I got about what would Lily Potter (née Evans)’s parents names be?

There’s a fanon that on Lily’s mother side of the family, all the girls get flower names. It could be possible that if Harry was born a girl or if he had a sister they would’ve gotten a flower name. Around that time -- 1980s -- the popular flower girls names in the UK were Heather, Holly, Hazel, Daisy, Flora, Laurel, Rowan, Rose and so on.

Other options are Hyacinth, Poppy, Dahlia, Lilac, Peony, etc. However, this is a fictional story so you don't have to be super accurate about names that were used during that time period. I doubt wizards or witches cared or bothered to keep track what names the muggles would find extremely unusual or weird. Though, the muggleborns would most likely make sure that any children of theirs wouldn’t be given a ridiculous name though.

What we do know is that Harry Potter was named after his great-grandfather Henry Potter. The name Henry derives from the Old French name Henri, and over time (during the medieval period) the English version – Harry – started to be used more in the UK. Most monarchs called Henry were referred to by those who knew them as Harry.

It’s mention in canon that Harry’s grandfather Fleamont gave his son a old-fashioned named like James to prevent him from being bully like he was when he was in Hogwarts. It’s also possible that Lily and James would’ve gone with a old-fashioned female name too. Maybe something like Victoria, Elizabeth, Katherine, Charlotte, Alexandra, Beatrice, Helena, Amalia, etc.?

It’s more likely that they would’ve named their daughter after James’ great-grandmother, which unfortunately her name is unknown to us. But that does mean that it can be be anything. It might even be something a bit out there or uncommon but not unusual. Some suggestions would be Magdalena, Anastasia, Isadora, Cordelia, Adelaide, Phyllida, Seraphina, Hildreth, Araminta, Eulalia, Gwendolyn, Aurelia, Evelyn, Hesperia, Marion, Mildred, Amaltheia, Wilhelmina, Lorraine, Matilda, Agatha, Camilla, Edna, Cosima, Eleanor, Gabriella, Philippa, Ethel, Lucia, Gwyneth, Winifred, Xenia, etc.

If Lily and James went in this direction they would probably picked a flower for a middle name too. The middle name usually honors a family member so it might’ve been Lily’s name or her mother’s name. For example: Harry’s full name is Harry James Potter, so it could’ve been something like [James’ Great-Grandmother’s Name] [Lily’s Name or Lily’s Mother Name] Potter.

Something that I also see often in stories is changing Harry’s name into Harriet Potter. The only way I could see that working is if Harry was suddenly turned into a girl because of a potion or spell mishap. In which case it would make better sense that he would want to keep being called Harry by claiming that it’s short for Harriet, Henrietta, Harrella, Harrilyn, or a variation of it.

Or that Lily and James thought they were having a boy and had the papers filled out in advance with the name Harry. But that’s a bit strange since nearly all parents tend to compile a list of names that they like for both genders. They usually wait until the baby is out for them to see what name clicks into place when they lay their eyes on their child. Plus, surprises do happen, such as expecting a boy, but getting a girl instead, vice versa or twins/triplets instead of what they originally thought. But we're also dealing with magical parents, magical nurses and doctors in a magical hospital. So unless James and Lily got a incompetent (or even unmotivated or apathetic) healer or mediwizard such mistakes are unlikely to happen.
