Hallmark Releases Its First Fiction Podcast

Sometimes brand extensions make no sense but seem a greedy way to make more money and extract the core of a brand. Do we really need 20 kinds of jelly? Or 14 kinds of spaghetti sauce? However, smart companies find ways to logically extend their brand that make financial sense and enhance the value of their product or service to their customers.
That is the case with Hallmark Channel's move into fiction podcasts. It makes sense. The company is adept at presenting such material, and romantic fiction is its special sauce. So it was not a surprise when Hallmark Media launched its first scripted podcast, Crimson Hearts Collide, billed as “a soulful romance-mystery story spun from the company’s Mahogany content initiative.” The eight-part podcast series, produced by Aliza Rosen’s AYR Media, premiered its first two episodes on August 24, followed by new episodes every Thursday. The cast of “Crimson Hearts Collide” includes Malinda Williams (“Soul Food”), Amanda Seales (“Insecure”), and Keith D. Robinson (“Sister Swap: A Hometown Holiday”). The podcast’s plotline: Sonora Williams (Williams), a top lawyer in New York City, receives a letter in the mail that changes everything: Sonora has an uncle who just passed away and left her an inheritance, a farm in Alabama. For her entire life growing up in foster care, she was told she had no family, leaving her to wonder if he knew about her, why did he not come for her? In order to get the answers she seeks, Sonora must leave her best friend in NYC (Seales) and close-knit community to travel to Greenville, Ala., and meet the people who keep the farm running – including the handsome cowboy Zeke Summers (Robinson), who immediately captures her attention. (Pictured above: Malinda Williams, Keith D. Robinson) I listened to the first episode, and the podcast is well done. It's standard Hallmark fare, and if you're a fan, the fiction podcast will definitely meet your expectations. The first two episodes average 37 minutes, which is perfect, I believe, for a fiction podcast. After all, TV hour-long dramas are about 41 minutes when all the commercials are deducted from the running time. 
There are also Hallmark Channel rewatch podcasts that deserve attention from dedicated Hallmark fans, especially those who love Christmas movies.
Deck The Hallmark blends comedy, wit, and a Hallmark chill vibe. My favorite is a new podcast called Hallmark Junkies. Co-hosted by Kerri, a published romance novelist (Is there a more appropriate job for a Hallmark Movie critic?) and Jenny, her BFF and self-anointed Hallmark junkie, the podcast is funny, insightful, and informative.
The show, which began in mid-July, has released seven episodes so far, my favorite being the one on the 2022 movie, Three Wise Men And A Baby. On that episode, we learn that fans of Hallmark Christmas actor extraordinaire Tyler Hynes are called "Hynies." We also learn that Kerri and Jenny were hoping that in the film's opening scene, where Hallmark hunk Andrew Walker appears with only a towel on, the towel would somehow slip off and expose Walker's Christmas tree. 
Sure, this isn't earth-shattering stuff, but for Hallmark Christmas fans, it's delectable and delightful. The podcast is a faithful rewatch show with a healthy dose of wit, humor, fun facts, legitimate criticism, and friendship bonds.

For 2023 and beyond, here are logo design trends for food and beverage products you might want to get behind. Whet the appetite When you’re selling edible products, it’s crucial to whet the consumers’ appetite even before they get to see and hold the actual food. That’s why snack food packaging usually uses drawings of what’s inside the package. You’re giving that potentially hungry person on the street a taste of your product. To take that up a notch, you can include a representation of whatever sumptuous treat you have on offer on the logo itself. That hungry person on the street will have to fight their urge to pass up doubly hard. Consider Mr. Frosty’s Ice Cream. The brand doesn’t shy away from selling what it’s selling. Even if it looks a bit of an oversell, you have to admire the persistence and consistency. Highlight your unique value proposition All brands have that one thing that makes them unique. Perhaps it’s your commitment to protecting Mother Nature. If that’s the case, get eco-friendly with your marketing efforts. Consider designing a logo that automatically paints your branding green. Take inspiration from Planet Protein, which sells vegan protein powder. The company logo is a green leafy vegetable—or perhaps it’s a sketch of a tree abundant with leaves.  Either way, it captures what the brand is all about: organic, sustainably sourced ingredients. Who would have thought you could sufficiently replenish your body’s daily protein needs without harming animals and Mother Earth? That’s what Planet Protein promises, which you won’t miss even if you only have their logo to go by. Take a nostalgia trip Humans can’t run away from their memories. That explains why nostalgia is a thing. You look at the past and see it from a much more positive perspective. As such, you may realize that nostalgia also has a place in logo design, especially in 2023 and beyond. The grunge movement will see a resurrection logo design-wise. And it’s most suited to food and beverage products that champion edginess. Think energy drinks and craft beers. Nostalgia extends beyond the 90s all the way to the groovy 70s. Look out for playful color palettes accentuated with fun and hip graphic elements. Think juice drink logos symbolic of peace, love, and all things positive. Go minimalist Of course, the oldies but goodies will remain. Again, think McDonald’s. That’s a simple-looking “M” right there, but it does the job. In 2023 and beyond, this simplicity and straightforwardness in logo design will continue to reign supreme. As long as you have an excellent grasp of color and font psychology, the minimalist design trend is something you can maximize. Leverage word marks This is another classic type of logo that won’t go away anytime soon. It’s font-based, highlighting the name of a business. Here, the most straightforward example might be Coca-Cola. Those carefree white letters on red are recognizable everywhere you go. Other noteworthy examples include the logos of Subway, Baskin Robbins, and Outback Steakhouse.
Pick pictorials You can’t blame new brands for getting inspiration from successful brands regarding logo design. In fact, some of the most popular brands right now rely solely on icons. Think Twitter, Target, and Apple. It won’t be long until the food and beverage industry catches up on this design trend. In the meantime, we have Chili’s. Wrapping It Up The food and beverage industry ranks high in the competitive market. The success of a brand like McDonald’s and Coca-Cola doesn’t happen overnight. It’s the result of careful business strategies sustained for years and years. Integral to that is excellent branding, which covers logo design. A logo is a brand’s representation at its most distilled. It tells a story, and logos that have evolved throughout the years make history. If you’re in the process of designing a new logo or tweaking an old one, give it the utmost care. Let color and font psychology inform it in such a way that it can resonate with your target market. The new normal
At the start of my last blog entry, I wrote about life returning to normal after the school holidays. How long ago that seems now.
Of course, things were ‘normal’ for a while with Ivy starting Kindergarten - and loving it. Most of the kids from her Little Saints pre-school moved up with her and those friendships have really blossomed over the past few months. A few of our English friends have commented that Ivy is developing an Aussie twang and while we don’t notice it (yet), that speaks to me of how well she has transitioned into a new area and immersed herself in play with these new companions.
She certainly doesn’t lack for confidence, choosing a ride on the school bus over a lift with Mum or Dad every time. It’s a big step up from the road onto the bus, especially wearing a backpack which is nearly as big as her, but Ivy’s a pretty determined character. One giant leap, and all that. I’ve learnt (and been told) to stand back and let her do things her own way.
Throughout February the Australian bushfires were still uppermost in everyone’s mind, especially in the communities which had been hardest hit. One of the key messages was to get out to these places and support the businesses which might otherwise not survive. So we took a drive one Saturday to Corryong, about 90 minutes east of Albury, to see how they were recovering and to spend a few bucks getting lunch in town. The swathes of charred trees on the hillsides of the Upper Murray brought home how terrifying it must have been to look out and see those slopes ablaze in the midst of the disaster. The flames had literally been stopped at Corryong’s doorstep. Properties right on the fringes of town had not survived, though, with only the chimney stack still standing amid the rubble, ruins and mangled metal. Some people really had lost everything. It was sobering.
But just as the green shoots were starting to sprout from the blackened tree trunks a few kilometres away, Corryong was carrying on and while it wasn’t yet business as usual, businesses were opening their doors and bouncing back. Our pub meal was good but what really made the day trip worthwhile was gaining a greater appreciation of the devastation caused by fire and how the rest of us could help in a practical way.
While Rachel was laying the foundations with her new class at the start of the school year, normal life for me involved wearing a few different hats (metaphorical, of course, as I’d left one of my two baseball caps behind in WA) with regard to my work. Freelancing in this case has meant selling stories back to the UK, rebranding a school newsletter, covering Supercars races for one of Australia’s major motorsport websites and continuing to host my podcast from which articles have appeared in our local paper. I’ve learned so much over the last six months by starting from scratch (in a professional sense) and reaching out to people who don’t have the faintest idea who I am. I’ve had to work harder for content than ever before in my career but that only makes it more rewarding when everything comes together. I will be a better journalist for the experience, I’m sure, and living/working here has only underlined the fact that I will literally talk sport with anyone for any amount of time.
Sport has always been a constant when life turns upside-down around us. It’s an escape, a release, something we look forward to, something we can talk about, debate, embrace and something that brings us together - whoever we want to win.
But the pandemic has taken even that away from us and that hurts. There is no shame in admitting that, no suggestion that we have lost perspective of the greater crisis by saying how much we miss the Premier League, the AFL or Formula 1. Sport leaves a huge hole. It is central to our culture whether we play or watch, whether it keeps our bodies or minds active. The global shutdown of leagues, championships and tournaments is absolutely necessary and it will teach us never to take this great love of our lives for granted again. Imagine the emotional outpouring when the turnstiles reopen, when the broadcasts start to roll again and the ball is back in play. The grass will seem greener, the roars will be louder and our intoxication because of it all will be purer than ever before. That day can’t come soon enough - but for now, life has to be a different sort of normal.
If the politicians are right, we’re in for six months of lockdown in varying degrees. That means Ivy staying home, no school and no play dates for the time being. You can’t dress it up: that’s tough, really tough. But we will be there to help her through it and that includes me putting on another hat as her teacher for home schooling.
Two weeks in, we’re still speaking. I’ve actually been blown away seeing how much she is already capable of, bearing in mind it can be like getting blood from a stone asking a five-year-old at 4pm ‘what did you do at school today?’ It’s been a real eye-opener. All that Daddy Daycare, as a friend wisely pointed out, all those Thursdays and Fridays trying to feed a toddler while Rachel was working in the UK, all those trips to what you’d largely consider ‘Mum groups’ during our previous stay in Australia, every hour I’ve spent building a relationship with my daughter is now paying dividends as we tackle new challenges: sight words, maths, craft projects, card games, reading, writing, dance, yoga. And we’re putting more hours in the bank as we go along.
But it will be hard sometimes; it already has been. There can be anxiety at the start of the day or overwhelming tiredness at the end of it not to mention one of us losing patience with the other. Am I doing Ivy justice? How are we going to manage today? When will someone tell us there is light at the end of the tunnel? Is it worth getting out of bed for starters? For a split-second when I wake up, I forget about the coronavirus and then it hits like a wrecking ball. Trying to plan a month or even a week ahead is so difficult, taking away the element of control which I find so helpful. One day at a time.
There is so much advice out there, so many mantras, what you should or shouldn’t do at this time, things kids need, things they shouldn’t have, how to be a good parent, partner, friend, citizen, whatever. I’m not really into that, so the only thing I’ll say is we just need to be honest with each about how we’re coping at the moment. Some days I really struggle, others are a bit better. So let’s just be there for each other, build each other up and that goes for those in Government too. Don’t hammer the people making decisions. It’s an awful time to be a leader and they’re trying their best. Tearing down the Prime Minister isn’t going to help anyone but following his advice will.
Life has changed and we’re all finding our own way through it. Yours will be different to mine, and that’s OK.
Whatever it looks like, this is normal now.

Esther Perel Is Fighting the “Tyranny of Positivity”
The famed relationship therapist talked to GQ about relearning social skills, pandemic breakups, and why “how was your pandemic?” is a lame question.

Within the first 60 seconds of our conversation, the psychotherapist Esther Perel introduces me to a concept she calls “enforced presentism.” It’s a feeling you might know well from the pandemic. “You can't think two days ahead,” says Perel. “Everything is in the moment, and you're dealing with this chronic unpredictability and stress.”
You might expect Perel to be better equipped than most to deal with such turbulence, given her experience in navigating romance and relationships, surely one of the most troubled and anxiety-inducing human experiences. Over the last four decades, she’s become one of the world’s most renowned relationship therapists, writing two bestselling books about couples, desire and sexuality, Mating in Captivity, and The State of Affairs, and hosting two podcasts, Where Should We Begin? And How’s Work? (Both invite listeners into sessions she conducts between people who are romantically or professionally connected.)
But Perel says her pandemic got off to a difficult start. First, she was scared. Then, she had to come to terms with the fact that, according to the covid classifications, no matter how she thought of herself, she was technically elderly. In the next phase, she coordinated a yoga group with friends on three continents. She started going on hikes and walks. She recorded seasons of both of her podcasts.
“Then, one day I woke up and I said, I want to create a game,” she remembers. “I want to create a happy project. I can’t deal with the loss, the sadness, the grief, the uncertainty—those existential aspects. I also want to deal with the part of us that keeps us connected to playfulness, to curiosity, to the unknown.”
That turned into a card game (also) called, “Where Should We Begin? A Game of Stories”. Filled with thought-provoking prompts—think “I’ve always wondered if it’s normal to…” and “The last promise I broke was…”—it’s meant to facilitate connection by getting people to tell stories that they might otherwise hide behind conversations about the humidity. More importantly, it’s as an antidote to the fog of enforced presentism, and a buffer against the atrophied social skills we might all carry into the world as it lifts.
Here, she talks about entering back into the world, the proliferation of the term “trauma,” fixing our work-as-identity problems, and why we need to retire the idea of the soulmate.
GQ: Based on what you’ve seen in your work—and just anecdotally or personally—what are the things, relationships-wise, that people have most been struggling with in the last 18 months? What do you think will continue to be issues as we re-emerge into a sense of normalcy?
Esther Perel: Big crises always operate as relationship accelerators. Especially a pandemic and a disaster says, "Life is short. Life is fragile. Things could end any moment." People articulate the awareness of mortality—we usually try to not be too aware of it. So you instantly begin to sharpen your priorities and you start to disregard the superfluous and the unimportant and the misguided.
You begin to say, "What am I waiting for? Let's move in together. Let's have the babies we've been wanting to have. Let's get married. Let's move.” Or: "I've waited long enough. I'm out of here. This is no longer sustainable to me." It goes in those two directions. It's what I want and what I no longer want.
So at this moment, most of my colleagues, we are talking about the avalanche of disruptions that have taken place in relationships, and the consequences thereof. I would say there's been a lot of different kinds of disruptions. Collapse of boundaries: people have never worked as hard, and they have had to turn their house into a gym, a restaurant, an office, a school, all of it, while sitting on the same chair. That's been a real challenge for people.
Why is it so hard for us to hold all of our identities at one time in one space?
In the same way we need reality and imagination, and we need groundedness and we need adventure, we need structure and spontaneity. Our rules structure us, and those rules are structured in time and in space. You came to work this morning, you dressed up a certain way that made sense for you, that is different than if you go to the gym, that is different than if you go to a club. The clothes go with the place where you go, with the building that you enter, with the way that you behave. A rule is a complex set of things that organizes you. That gives you a sense of how to behave, what to do, how to think, how to relate to people. When you don't have any of that—you are a partner, a parent, a lover, a friend, a son, an employee, a manager—and it's all happening at the same table in the same sweatpants, it becomes like a fog. You start to experience a type of lethargy. You start to lose the pleasure of what you do.
It strikes me that this could be a moment where we might begin to realize all the identities we’re performing, and maybe actually become more conscious or aware of these roles in a healthy way.
Yes. First of all, a lot of people slowed down enough that they could pay attention. People became more observant of the rhythms of their lives—of the trees around them for that matter. We slowed down for the first time in a long time. Since the early 1900s, all we have done is gone fast.
Except when you sit in your mindfulness moments. These mindfulness and meditation incursions into Western culture are all in response to the degree of acceleration that our culture has experienced.
What do you think of the American imperative to be happy?
Happiness used to belong in the afterlife. In Heaven. People suffered when on earth, especially good Christians, so that they could maybe be rewarded later. This is the first time in history that you ask Western parents what they want for their children, and the first thing they say is, "I want them to be happy." They don't say, "I want them to be healthy, alive," because child mortality has gone down. They don't say, "I want them to be good people." They're supposed to talk about, "I want them to be happy."
The tyranny of positivity is a burden. Happiness is an outcome, not a mandate, because the mandate of happiness makes you constantly have to wonder, "Am I happy? Am I happy enough? Could I be happier? Should I leave this relationship? I'm happy, but maybe I could be happier somewhere else." So it becomes, how do I know? And then it becomes massive uncertainty, massive self-doubt.
Happiness comes in a moment, where I finish an interview with you, or you with me, and maybe we say, "That was really good. I'm happy. I'm glad. I'm pleased." And then off we go. it's a moment. It's not, "I am happy in my life. I'm a happy person." I'm a person with a range of emotions.
The depression and anxiety of today is the mirror response to the pressure on happiness. You can't be sad. You can't be blue, melancholic. Then you get the permission to be sad if you're depressed. So let's pathologize it. And if depression isn't enough, let's say you’ve had trauma.
Trauma is the licensed language to talk about pain and suffering at this moment. That doesn't mean there is no trauma, but it means that if we say the word trauma, it gives me permission to say, "I have pain and I have suffered, and it was hard, and I have legacies from it."
I think it's good that we're recognizing trauma on a larger scale, but I’m curious at what point it’s almost rendered meaningless.
In a society that mandates happiness, the suffering doesn't disappear, but you need to find a new legitimacy. So if you put it in the framework of trauma, it becomes legitimized.
So because we're so obsessed with happiness, we can't just say, "I'm sad,” we need to have some reason to feel sad?
That’s right. A framework that gives it permission and legitimacy. That’s the framework of trauma. That doesn't mean there are no developmental traumas—let's be very clear. Trauma is not what happened, trauma is your reaction to something that has happened over time. We've expanded the word trauma from big, terror-inducing, helplessness-inducing events, to what we call today the traumas with small t’s, which are the developmental traumas. These are super, super important. But in society, there is a direct correlation between the pressure to be happy and the release valve that comes through the trauma. I'm allowed to say that I'm not happy, because I had trauma.
So what is the goal behind the card game? What's the ultimate desire for you?
The game is a game of stories. I have a podcast that tells stories about our lives. Our relationship stories are the way we make meaning of our life. Stories are the way we connect with people. Stories are the way we tell ourselves. I ask questions in my practice where people are invited to rewrite their stories so that they don't stay stuck there, because the story is connected to your core beliefs. So the game is a game of stories and it incentivizes people to tell stories that they rarely tell.
At this point, just because of the timing, it's become a game for connecting and reconnecting. It's a game where people can really overcome their social atrophy and the social anxiety that some of us are experiencing. It gives you a sense of how you reenter, how you have those small conversations that then become deep conversations sometimes.
What are some of the things people should look out for with regards to social atrophy?
“So how was the pandemic?” This is a question that I've heard quite a bit. [laughs] As if you just came back from some trip! And even when you come back from a trip, most of the time people are not interested in you talking more than one sentence. They don't really want to know, "First we went here and then we did that. And you won't believe this and then..." People know that they've gone through something big. They don't really know what they can ask. They don't know how much others really want to know. That’s a big one.
You’ve offered interesting perspectives on a lot of the Western myths we have. What do you think are some of the American myths that undergird our society that were most exposed by the pandemic and by COVID?
Self-reliance, effort, optimism, "Roll up your sleeve, get to work. There is nothing you cannot solve, if you put your mind to it." This “it's all on you, try harder mentality.” A pandemic will definitely highlight the notion of interdependence. Public health is a conception of interdependence. You do something not just for you—you do something because it protects others. That notion of interdependence has taken a beating over the last [several years]. It's all self-help, self-love, self-compassion. Self is in front of a lot of things, and that ultimately ends up creating a self focus. That doesn't mean self is not important. But it also comes to self and other. It's I and thou. We don't exist separately from our connections with others.
What else?
The soulmate myth. The soulmate has always historically been God. One and only meant the divine. When you start to turn a human being into God-like, and you collapse the social and the spiritual, you set yourself up a little bit. Relationships are sustained by the community that they live in. Not being alone doesn't mean being two. And people here do not have enough social support, no matter which way you turn. They don’t have enough confidants, or people they talk to. Lots of things they bring to therapists should be shared in community settings. Couples don't tell the truth to anybody. Your best friends, when they may divorce, you didn't even see it coming.
The next myth, at this moment, is the centrality of work. On the one hand, work is very liberating. You come to America and if you work hard, you can make it. At the same time, when people lose their jobs, especially men, they're willing to jump off the roof. There needs to be other sources of meaning and other sources of values that isn't just about success and money and all of those things. All the research asking people what they would have wanted to do differently, not a single one says, "I would have wanted to work hard."
So with these myths in mind, what would you advise people to do, coming out of the pandemic, to try to counteract them?
There's no greater antidepressant than doing for others. Instead of just thinking about self-care, take care of others. When you do for others, when you see other people's pain, experiences, hunger, you name it, you feel like you matter. You derive meaning when you are important to others. Your meaning doesn't just come from what you do for yourself.
In terms of the soulmate, one person cannot give you what an entire community should provide. That is bound to create a crumbling of too many expectations on one unit. So do not give up your friends. A wedding is not saying goodbye to your circle or to these relationships. They're super important, and especially the men. The men, particularly guys in straight relationships, lose massive amounts of social connections once they get married. But this is for people in all types of relationships. One person cannot give you what a whole village should provide.
Then for work, work as identity is where it's going. Love and work are replacing traditional communal structures and religion. But think about other sources of purpose and meaning, and put them in place. What else matters in your life? If it's only work, when work doesn't go well, mental health problems are very close around the corner.

Think about the people you'd consider truly high-achieving—whether they're CEOs, rock stars, or Olympic athletes. Do you think they do everything themselves? Of course not. To take your productivity to the next level, you have to get comfortable delegating tasks.
"Forget the hustle culture. You do not need to be busy for the sake of it," says Rhys Williams, managing director of Sigma Recruitment. "Focus on the tasks that are most important to you, and find ways to get others to do the rest for you. This also helps with your mental health."
3If it takes two minutes or less, do it.
David Allen, an author of Getting Things Done, has something he calls a "two-minute rule" that can make a major impact on anyone's effort to get a handle on their workload. The rule is simple: If it takes less than two minutes, do it right now. When you remember you need to send that email or call to make a reservation, don't add it to your to-do list or tell yourself you'll do it later—just get it out of the way now and get on with your day with one less thing to deal with.
4Exercise.
When it comes to New Year's resolutions, most lists include this right near the top—but what does it have to do with productivity? Quite a bit, actually.
As Robert C. Pozen explains for the Brookings Institution, an exercise routine can give you more energy throughout the day thanks to the stimulation of mitochondria in your cells.
"That gives you more energy to exert yourself physically, but it also means more energy for your brain, boosting your mental output," he writes. "A modest exercise habit can help keep you sharper into old age, give you more energy to take on the day, and improve your mood. So stop making excuses, find a group of like-minded peers, and start exercising today."
5Meditate.
When you're taking breaks throughout the day, it's beneficial to overall productivity to turn at least one of those breaks into a brief meditation. This is a time to attempt to fully relax and clear your mind of all distractions.
"Find little moments throughout the day to meditate," says Deborah Sweeney, CEO of MyCorporation. "This time will help center and ground you to be in the moment and express gratitude for the little things that might be forgotten throughout the day."
A 2018 study published in Psychological Science points to how meditation can provide a person with greater focus throughout their day. If you're new to meditation, Psychology Today offers these helpful tips for beginners to help get you started.
6Get enough sleep and get up early.
The classic Ben Franklin exhortation, "Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise," has been proven by science to be sage advice. For example, a 2014 study published in the journal Cognitive Therapy and Research found that those who go to bed later are more likely to suffer negative and repetitive thoughts.
Christopher Randler, a biology professor at the University of Education in Heidelberg, Germany, writes, "When it comes to business success, morning people hold the important cards. My earlier research showed that they tend to get better grades in school, which get them into better colleges, which then leads to better job opportunities. Morning people also anticipate problems and try to minimize them." The researcher has found that those who wake up early tend to be more persistent, cooperative, agreeable, and conscientious.
7Add something green to your workspace décor.
"Research shows that … looking at something green—trees out of the window, office plants, or even the green screen—can make us feel a bit better and increase our productivity," says Darko Jacimovic, co-founder of WhatToBecome. "What's more, attention restoration theory suggests that nature has therapeutic benefits on people and enables us to recharge and refresh, regain focus, and increase overall productivity."
So pick up a few plants and add some flora to your workspace.
8Find an accountability partner.
You are more likely to complete many tasks, whether that's an exercise routine or a writing assignment, by telling someone else you are going to try to do it.
"You are more likely to achieve your goals if you have an accountability partner or partners," says Nina Dafe, a networking advisor for women entrepreneurs. "This is because of the many benefits that accountability holds. As such, accountability and mastermind groups are great ways to keep focused and motivated—especially if you find it difficult to stay on track independently."
9And establish a system to make each other accountable.
Even more impactful than an accountability partner is one who you have to pay when you blow a deadline or don't follow through on what you said you would do.
"Urgent things usually get done," explains Jeremy Redleaf, co-founder of productivity company CAVE DAY. "It's those important goals that don't have deadlines that we really have to watch. Send a friend a list of important tasks every month and pay them $1 for each one you don't complete. We've seen this lead to some remarkable results in our community."
10Identify your values.
This may be a big-picture way of thinking about productivity, but especially as we begin a new year and you consider what changes you'd like to make in your life, it's good to think about what really matters to you before you start worrying about tackling those daily to-dos.
"Values are aspirational and cannot merely be checked off like a goal," explains clinical psychologist Stephanie J. Wong, Ph.D. "However, they can help us lead more authentic and productive lives. Ask yourself, 'Is participating in X event or doing X behavior, consistent with values or inconsistent?' This helps weed out problematic or unproductive behaviors."
It will be from these big-picture values that your day-to-day priorities and projects will flow.
11Remind yourself of your larger goals.
Setting out your values and priorities is not a once-a-year effort. Once you are clear on what matters most to you, remind yourself of that regularly. The point is to not lose sight of why you're working on what you're working on—or to decide you should move on to something else.
"Remind yourself of your larger goals and purpose to create a decision filter for your projects," says leadership coach Megan Accardo. "We all have the same amount of hours in the day, but we need to be clear about what we are saying yes to because that means saying no to something else."
12Use a digital task list to keep your mind clear.
Keeping your to-dos in your head usually means you either forget them, or you keep turning them over in your head without actually doing anything about them—which prevents your brain from focusing on more worthwhile things. Sometimes a simple written list can do the trick, but Frank Buck, author of getting Organized!: Time Management for School Leaders suggests getting a little more sophisticated.
"I use a free web-based tool called Remember the Milk, along with the companion mobile app," he says. "Every time a task comes your way, put it on the list with a due date for when you want to see that task again."
13Put repeating tasks on autopilot.
"We all have tasks that need to be done at the same time every year or every month," says Buck. "Put them on your digital task list with a date and how often they should repeat. They'll automatically show up at the right time."
That may be changing the batteries in the smoke alarm or calling to check in on an important client you don't have urgent business with but want to stay in contact with.
14Capture your to-dos as they come in.
Your day will inevitably bring on an onslaught of new things you need to get done. Just as you finish one project or move something forward, four more things pop up that need to be addressed. Buck has some tips for that.
"Use a paper journal and your digital task list to handle the flood of incoming information," he says. "Trap the details of phone calls and meetings in the journal. Later in the day, look at everything you wrote, and make decisions about the 'to-dos.' Put the results of the thinking on your digital task list."
15Turn projects into "next actions."
You've no doubt heard the advice that you can more effectively get to work on a major project by breaking it into "smaller parts." This is true, up to a point, Buck says, but it might be more useful to think of every project as a series of "next actions," instead. That is, ask yourself, what is the next action that needs to be taken to move this forward? If you've got a thesis to write, the next step might be checking out a book on the topic at the library or just researching which books to check out. Instead of thinking about the giant, amorphous project that needs to get done, clarify what you can actually do right now, and take that action.
"Work those small next steps into your task list for each day," says Buck. "The secret is to word them clearly so they are easy to do."
16Get more specific about your to-do list.
Hand-in-hand with turning "stuff" into "actions" is getting clear about whatever it is you actually want to do. Instead of spending mental energy thinking "I really need to revamp that website," you're far better off thinking a little more deeply, to answer the question, "What exactly is it I want to do with the site?"
"When writing down goals or tasks, always try to be as descriptive as possible," says Raven Beria, founder of brand consultancy Brandalaxy. "With clear and concise goals, you'll feel less resistant to starting—and that's typically the biggest hurdle in the first place."
Beria adds that when you're finished, you'll feel more fulfilled since when tasks are kept vague, you could end up doing a tremendous amount of work and never really feel like you've made any "progress."
17Get organized the night before a big day.
"Many people often scramble in the morning to find their keys, wallet, phone, etc," says Wong. Instead of beginning your day with this rushing around, she suggests you instead "prepare everything you need for the next day, the night before the specified day. This will reduce the risk of being late for an important meeting or dropping your children off at school."
It will also mentally prepare you for what you will be doing the next day. You will wake up with your mind already primed to tackle whatever you have on the agenda and will feel a few steps ahead with all of your things packed and ready.
18Use a Tickler File to get your desk clean.
And speaking of getting organized, let's talk about what you're going to do about all that junk on your desk. Buck suggests a tool for tackling the clutter of things you will need to reference down the line: a Tickler File.
"Much of the desk clutter comes from papers you need some time in the future," he explains. "With a set of hanging files labeled 1-31 (for each day of the month) and 12 more folders behind them (one for each month of the year), you have a place to put paperwork needed in the future. When you open today's folder, there's everything you decided you want to do today."
19Schedule time for deep work.
While many of our tasks are quick items we can take care of in a few minutes, there are also those things that require some serious concentration. One's productivity needs to set aside time during the week for this kind of "deep work."
"That means no social media access, no e-mail, no phone," says Priya Jindal, founder of Nextpat. "Figure out what you want to do during these sessions (about two hours twice a week) and then show those deliverables."
20Designate one meeting-free day a week.
Speaking of cutting out distractions, one of the greatest killers of productivity during one's day is too many meetings. While they can often be a good opportunity for face time with colleagues, it's important to limit the time you spend in meetings each day to avoid losing productive work hours.
"Proactively choose a day per week to have no meetings," suggests Amber Christian, founder of productivity software Wonderly Software Solutions. "Maybe it is Meeting-less Monday or Frustration-Free Friday. Pick a day that can be devoted exclusively to work. Give your meeting-less day its own theme, so that it mentally establishes a place in your mind and becomes a priority. By establishing this habit, it will allow you more time for deep work to devote to getting your critical projects and priorities done."
21Build routines into your day.
"At the beginning of the day, plan out one key priority that you need to get done during the day," suggests Christian. "Now, schedule it on your calendar. Every single workday. This will help you get in the habit of making sure your top priority is done each day."
At the very least, get into a steady routine that gives the start of your day predictability and energy—perhaps with a brief morning workout, an affirmation, or reading a chapter of a book you're enjoying. The repetition will prime you for the day to come.
22End your day by emptying your brain.
Making a morning to-do list has its value, but it may be more productive to take this kind of inventory at the end of your day instead.
"Even on the good days, many to-dos or follow-ups will come into your mind," says Christian. "As part of your transition to evening, brain dump out any open loops on to your to-do list."
You will find that by putting it down on paper, you feel a greater sense of control over the many incomplete items you have left and will be better prepared to tackle them the next day.
"It's like closing the door on your work-day," as Christian puts it.
23Ask for help.
No matter how productive you may be, no person can do everything alone, nor should they. Truly productive people know the power of asking for help when it would be of value.
"To-do lists can be effectively completed if you identify who could help you with specific tasks," says Wong. "Do you need to drop a book off at the library? Perhaps your significant other works closer than the library than you? Is a co-worker more effective than you in organizing inventory, and has more time to dedicate to the task?"
You're surrounded by resources that can help you be more productive—don't be afraid to tap into them.
24Learn to say "no."
While it can feel easier at the moment to agree to whatever you are being asked, in the long run, for the sake of that relationship and your own productivity, you are better off getting comfortable saying "no" when you know it's not something you can swing.
"This may sound crazy and self-interested, but in this busy world, no one can put his or her productivity on the stake to please someone," says Jessica Chase, sales and marketing manager for Premier Title Loans.
25Focus on one important thing.
Your list of things to get done is always longer than you'll really be able to tackle in a day—or in a year if you're being honest with yourself. And while different people have their preferences for how many things you should really try to tackle in a given day, Accardo suggests keeping it to just one.
"Focus on one important project for the day, and secondary projects only if necessary," she says. "Multitasking dramatically reduces productivity."
26Manage your energy as well as your time.
Productive people have a fine-tuned sense of when they are at their sharpest, and most likely to get the best performance out of themselves. For many, that's in the morning, while others prefer tackling big projects later in the day. Whatever your preference, plan your projects accordingly so you're getting the higher-level thinking done at times when your mind is sharpest, and save the mindless filing or emailing for when your brain is on autopilot.
27Schedule breaks.
Being productive doesn't mean powering through hours and hours of work nonstop. Nobody works well that way, and 2014 research from Stanford University and elsewhere has shown that planning breaks as part of your daily routine can make you work more creatively and productively.
"Schedule positivity breaks to get unstuck," suggests Accardo. "Since we know our mind works like a muscle, we need to intentionally schedule regular breaks—ideally every 60 to 90 minutes. Many productive people find themselves stuck, take a break, and come back with a terrific new idea! It is also a good moment to practice gratitude and increase your positivity."
28Build rest and rewards into your schedule.
Similar to breaks during the day, you also should take your fun and relaxation as seriously as you take your work—and that means drawing a stark line between your "personal" time and your professional hours.
"Markdown your self-care and social appointments in advance so you can give yourself permission to find enjoyment," says Accardo.
And when you are taking these breaks, be sure to fully enjoy them, experiencing them at the moment rather than letting your mind wander to the work waiting for you when you get back. Enjoying yourself this way will allow you to work better when you return to the office.
29Practice the Pomodoro Technique.
If you're looking for a more formal way to approach your breaks, considerer the Pomodoro Technique. Named for the tomato-shaped kitchen timer that helps practitioners time their day, this approach basically breaks down your hours into 30-minute cycles.
"We work continuously for 25 minutes with maximum attention, and make a 5-minute break in between," explains Jacimovic. "I think this method is very efficient because it gives us time to rest frequently, restart, and fill our batteries."
30Look at the big picture.
While every project requires taking care of numerous next actions to get it to a place of completion, it's also important for one's productivity to have a clear picture of what all this work is for.
"Focus on the outcome you want," advises Rusty Gaillard, a life coach with Silicon Valley Dreambuilders. "If you want the promotion, get clear on what it really takes to get the promotion. Most of the things on our to-do lists don't get us the outcome we want."
Picturing the final product will help you make better decisions about how to get there, while also inspiring you to keep working toward your goal.
31Get rid of digital clutter.
Look at your browser: Does it have a dozen tabs open even though you're only using one? How about your desktop: Are there six documents open when you aren't actively working on any of them? It's time to close a few.
"Operating systems and software updates have made it easier for us to cram more and more content onto our screens concurrently," say Foram Sheth and Nicole Wood of Ama La Vida, a Chicago-based career coaching company. "Eliminating clutter is also an unequivocally good thing. All of those pages and documents will still be there when you're actually ready to attend to them. Give yourself the time and space to get to where you need to be on individual tasks rather than thinking you can complete everything at once."
32Check email only at designated times during the day.
For many, email is something that is just always open, so you can respond the moment a message comes through. But how often is that really necessary?
"Beyond the obvious distractions from our mobile devices, we're also bombarded with email notifications on our laptops and work computers," Sheth and Wood said. "With what we already know about the issues with distractions and our focus, creating set times throughout your day to check emails will help you keep your concentration on the task at hand rather than jumping sporadically from thought to thought."
They suggest developing a schedule (and adjusting it as needed) for when you're going to check your emails and making sure notifications are shut off when you are working on other things.
33Optimize your inbox.
It's not the size of your inbox—it's the way you use it.
"Turn off things that it does to distract you, like pop up notifications and chimes. Anything that you can answer in two minutes or less do so. Otherwise, push to your calendar, delegate, or delete," says Jindal. "Anything else should be filed as part of a task list."
She adds that you should also know that it's not necessary to respond to everything, and certainly not immediately.
"Being able to quickly triage an inbox and then focus on tasks instead of responses makes you far more productive than sending back a response with no substance," she says. "You also save hours by ensuring that you triage efficiently."
34Get off social media.
Email is bad enough as a distraction, but social media platforms are even bigger killers of time and productivity.
"Unless you work in social media, try and limit your social media use," says James Dyble, managing director of Global Sound Group. "From my research, I have found that browsing social media regularly is a huge drainer of productivity. The reason is that there is so much happening on social media. Therefore, your mind is all over the place."
35Embrace airplane mode.
When you're at a movie, play, or preparing for takeoff, and smartphone distractions are explicitly prohibited, you turn your phone to airplane mode. So why not extend this approach to other aspects of your workday?
"Not only will the focus-grabbing messages and alerts stop, but you will be less inclined to mindlessly check your phone with the knowledge that nothing new will be there under that setting," say Sheth and Wood. "Putting your phone onto airplane mode and out of sight altogether will allow you to be much more present in your work and with anything else that you need to accomplish."
36Use apps to improve time management.
For those of you who feel like going straight to airplane mode is too much of a plunge, Sheth and Wood recommend downloading usage apps, which allow you to set limits and restrictions on any apps on your phone, including messages and other highly distracting functions.
"Apps like these also give you the important (and sometimes shocking) data as far as how many times you're unlocking your phone and the total amount of time spent on it," they say.
37Track your habits.
Checking email and social media are just a couple of bad habits you need to keep in check when trying to have a productive day. But what about the good habits you are trying to make part of your daily routine?
"Use a habit tracking system and check a box for every day you do the habit," suggests Beria. "There's a lot of science behind tracking down habits. For one, it feels great to know you're keeping the checkmarks going. Two, it's a self-accountability system, especially when you place your habit tracker somewhere it's visible at all times."
Beria adds that this process of self-discipline will eventually provide you with the most rewarding results, instilling an internal motivation in you to continue the positive behavior.
38Make a timer part of your toolkit.
It's not just about keeping track of your habits, but also about keeping track of how long said habits are taking. Whether you are using the Pomodoro technique or prefer some other approach, a timer can be a major help toward becoming more productive.
39Beware of decision fatigue.
Just as you should be careful about over-booking your day, you also do not want to pack in too many decisions or projects that will cause your mental energy to drain and make you unable to deal with important choices later in the day.
"Decision fatigue is a real thing," says Accardo. "The brain works like a muscle and gets fatigued as the day goes on. For this reason, we need to tackle our most important project first. Write the name of the project you'll spend the first few hours of the day working on and then get to it straight away."
40Know when to step away.
If you find that you are hitting a wall on a particular task, consider trying to stop and move on to something else.
"So often we get caught in trying to finish up something that we can't see the forest anymore, which can result in errors or boredom," explains Jindal. "Walking away physically and doing something slightly different, whatever that might be, can help our brains pull on new threads, open our eyes to a slightly different perspective, and give our minds some rest so that it can get back to the grind when you return."
This can be part of a formal break that you take every 45 minutes or a more informal change of setting when you find yourself hitting a slow patch in your work.
41Try a change of scenery.
This shifting of gears can sometimes work best when you physically move from one place to another.
"Do you ever find yourself sitting down at your desk with the intention of 'getting work done' only to realize half an hour later than you're still procrastinating?" asks Yaz Purnell, founder of personal finance website The Wallet Moth. "It's easy for this kind of procrastination to become a habit in which we associate our desk and typical work environment with boredom and stagnation. Changing your scenery by heading to a co-working space, coffee shop, or just taking a five-minute walk to get some fresh air outdoors can make all the difference in helping you shift from procrastination into work mode."
42Schedule a "CEO date."
Racheal Cook, CEO, and founder of the CEO Collective suggests a weekly "CEO date" to get a handle on productivity. But that doesn't mean meeting with the actual CEO of your company.
"This dedicated time on your calendar helps to plan and prioritize your week by design," says Cook. "It's an opportunity to track progress against your bigger plan for the year, determine if you're on or off track, and make the adjustments needed to reach your goals."
43Give yourself a scorecard.
Following the logic of approaching your work as if you are the CEO of your own life, Cook also suggests assigning dollar-per-hour values to specific tasks, to ensure you utilize your resources correctly.
"Score tasks from $10/hour all the way up to $10,000/hour," she says. "For instance, $10 tasks could include admin work in the office, while in the home it could be unloading the dishwasher. Delegate these tasks to secretaries, or in the home to your children. As you make your way up the chain, $10,000 tasks should be focused on your highest value skillset."
44Time blocks your tasks.
Different tasks and projects require different parts of your brain and different resources, so it makes sense that you will be more effective by doing as much as you can to group similar tasks together.
"Break up each day of the week into themes that help you reach your five core tasks," says Cook. She defines these as "determining the mission and vision, guiding the values and culture, creating the strategic plan, leading the team, and making the big decisions," but they can vary depending on your particular demands and ambitions. For example, Cook breaks up her week by devoting one day entirely to her clients and another to creating content.
45Use recurring appointments.
We are creatures of habit and as much as we can do to build routines into our days and weeks, the more likely we will create positive habits that stick.
"Use repeating appointments to work on projects that take long periods," suggests management coach and consultant Amie Devero. "For example, create an appointment every Wednesday at 3 p.m. for two hours to write that novel you've been planning to start since college."
46Streamline your calendar.
Just as you should optimize your inbox and to-do list, your calendar should also be approached in a way that maximizes its value to your personal productivity. While every calendar is ideal for tracking appointments and providing reminders, there is more that you could be doing with yours.
"For example, when scheduling a meeting in Google Calendar, it automatically generates a Google Meet code so that you can simply click the link and the conference is set up and waiting for you to join," explains Mark Webster, co-founder of marketing education company Authority Hacker. "No extra scheduling, no need to send invites or worry about people being in the wrong place at the wrong time. This is a powerful tool for streamlining scheduled meetings, particularly video conferences."
There are many other ways you can get more out of your Google Calendar (here are 25 to get you started).
47Track how you spend each minute.
As you become more productive, you gain a greater appreciation for just how much can get accomplished with a minute here and a minute there—or, on the other hand, how quickly a sense of accomplishment can drain away when these minutes slide by in useless meetings or time-sucking habits.
Webster recommends manually tracking how each minute is spent.
"These minutes add up," he says. "That is why I'm always thinking about the long-term implications and how I can make these small tasks even more productive."
48Get a week-long perspective.
Many of these tips have focused on how to make the most of a day or even an hour, but there is great productive power in taking a week-long perspective, looking at how your time is spent. Entrepreneur Romi Neustadt, author of the forthcoming You Can Have It All Just Not at the Same Damn Time!, suggests creating a weekly plan.
"Make a list of everything you do in a week—and I mean everything—and how long you spend doing it," she says. Then label each task based on its function, importance, and appeal. After that, Neustadt says, delete or delegate everything you "hate doing" or "think you should do." She recommends spending 20 minutes doing this before the start of every week.
49Differentiate between daily actions and long-term goals.
Beyond looking at your day or week, you will also want to do a monthly review of how you are progressing on your bigger-picture goals.
"While goals can be important, you often don't have control over when you reach them," says Trevor Lohrbeer, founder of Day Optimizer, an app that helps people plan their day. "By focusing on your actions daily, you create the necessary momentum required to achieve your goals. Focusing on your goals once a month them helps you direct that momentum and ensure you're continuing to head in the right direction."
50Acknowledge your progress.
Productivity isn't only about work, work, and more work. To ensure you have the momentum to move forward, you have to step back and see how far you've come.
"Your productivity is to a large extent connected to your self-confidence and self-trust," explains Yoram Baltinester, consultant and executive coach with Decisive Action Workshops. "Nothing bolsters these attitudes more than acknowledging progress. Make sure to reflect for a few moments at the end of the day about the progress you made."
When you fail to make direct progress, Baltinester adds, you're still gaining experience that will translate into better odds for success in the future. So even being unproductive can produce some valuable results.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
I hope you all are as ridiculously amped up as I am for the opening of Avengers: Endgame this evening! It marks the primary conclusion of all major story points from nearly every Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film going back to where it started with the original Iron Man from 2008. It is a cinematic event 11 years in the making and is being forecasted to break all kinds of box office records. This week I have been preparing by watching the latest two MCU films in my video backlog to refresh me with the latest story arcs. I will begin by first covering 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (trailer). Marvel Studios and James Gunn wasted no time jumping on a sequel to the surprise breakout success of the first GotG. As I detailed in my entry covering the first GotG, I still recall being blown away by how won over I was by an unorthodox crew of larger-than-life characters that came together to rescue the galaxy. That same gang returns in an awesome opening piece that sees Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) take on a mammoth of a gelatinous octopus-esque creature while the now fun-sized ‘Baby’ Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) dances away in the background to the requisite 1970s pop-rock soundtrack. It is a goofy dumb sequence that I took gleeful joy in jamming out at home to with a pair of surround sound headphones.
The primary hook in GotG2 is that after vanquishing said blobby monster, the Guardians run into a jam when collecting their reward from the golden skinned race of beings known as Sovereign. They high tail it out of there with Sovereign right on their tale when a mysterious being assists the Guardians in escaping. They meet up with this being who introduces himself as Ego (Kurt Russell) along with his servant Mantis (Pom Klementieff). Ego breaks the big news to Peter that he is his dad and invites the Guardians to join them on his home planet to clear his origins up and catch up on the past. Of course there is more than meets the eye to Ego’s claims, and there are periphery matters happening with Yondu (Michael Rooker) and his Ravagers once again meddling with the Guardians throughout and Gamora and her sister Nebula (Karen Gillan) quarreling out decades worth of family disputes too. There are a ton of lighthearted jokes and gags throughout GotG2 like its predecessor. A lot of them hit and crack me up throughout, but the opening half hour Marvel Studios went overkill with them. I could not help but think that even though I was enjoying the heck out of the opening scenes that Marvel Studios could have dialed it back a smidge or two. I have to struggle with this criticism however because ultimately I am talking about a cast of bombastic figures such as a talking CG tree and raccoon and a whole host of colorful, galactic species waging war to a killer ‘70s soundtrack so in the end it may be wise for me to give GotG2 the benefit of the doubt to get away with double-to-triple the gags of the average MCU film. I also settled on giving this qualm a pass because I convinced myself for all future GotG viewings to go into them two beers in and that will help put that nitpick I have at bay and take in the ride that is GotG. I am also 100% down with any film that gives the Zune some love, being an avid Zune user myself to this day much to the ridicule of several podcast hosts over the years.
There is so much in Vol 2 that I loved. I will highlight a few of my favorite takeaways while doing my best not to go into too much detail. Drax had a few nicely timed dry humor moments originally, and Marvel Studios went all in with Drax’s dry wit being peppered throughout with lots of priceless exchanges with Mantis. Baby Groot is over-the-top adorable in his naiveté and cute facial expressions. The in-house faction wars in the Ravagers between Yondu and the astutely named Tazerface (Chris Sullivan) was a fantastic periphery arc that climaxed with a unforgettable exchange with Rocket and later Yondu going all out with another dazzling display of his arrow skills. I would be remiss if I were to forget to mention how spectacular the CG is here. It is in a class of its own with the already high bar established by the rest of the MCU films. Aside from the stunning space dogfights, Ego’s planet is a literal marvel and features some breathtaking use of CG to showcase flashbacks. The final act blows away the already-stellar final act of the first GotG with everything coming to a boil between Peter and Ego in a near half-hour long epic battle to get the hell off Ego’s planet and escape his wrath. Props again to James Gunn hand picking another star studded ‘70s pop-rock soundtrack along with an accompanying heroic original score that kicks in at all the right beats and combines for easily the best aural experience of all the MCU films.
The GotG2 BluRay has the ideal amount of extra features I want on a BluRay. It has a five star gag reel like most of the other MCU home video releases. There are a few minutes of deleted scenes with my standout being more extended love for the Zune. There is a 37 minute behind-the-scenes feature split up into four parts highlighting the soundtrack, visual effects and cast and crew love for director James Gunn, which was quite fascinating to see now in hindsight after the whole James Gunn Twitter controversy that temporarily removed him from the upcoming third GotG until the cast and crew fought vehemently to bring him back. Finally, James Gunn has a solo commentary track for the feature. Minus an occasional lull, he was pretty entertaining and a few quick highlights from it was Gunn referencing his work on the Lollipop Chainsaw game for inspiration for special effects in the movie, getting one of Quill’s big speeches mostly from a dream he woke up from in the middle of the night and Gunn justifying the use of five post-credit bonus scenes and how they all came to be. It is rare for superhero films to meet and surpass expectations, especially sequels. Re-watching Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 only assured me that those expectations were righteously knocked out of the park. I loved the first film, and somehow James Gunn found a way to make the sequel far better. I am intrigued in how Gunn stated in the commentary how he feels the Guardians films are like independent movies with a big budget because of the near-limitless creative freedom Marvel Studios allows him. It is because of that freedom that these films are in a class of their own and find a way to standout amongst themselves in the constantly rising number of unique MCU properties and I cannot wait to see what awaits the Guardians of the Galaxy this weekend in Avengers: Endgame! What I’m Into: July 2018
Whew – we snuck this monthly favorites list in right before the door to July closed on us! With summer in full swing, I feel like I have only half as much time as I did in the fall and winter. But this month, I wanted to share some of my favorite new finds as well as some old favorites, so grab a peach iced tea (*wink to the Broken Record subscribers*) and don’t forget to share your favorite products from July in the comments!
Soapbox
It has been a total joy to follow this brand from its inception through a full rebrand, the results of which are obviously stunning. They sent me a press package last year and I have been sudsing up with their body wash and hair care on and off for months! My hair really likes it, the body wash is my current favorite (I suggest the Sea Minerals body wash to  e v e r y o n e), and there are tons of products I haven’t even tried yet!
This brand caught my eye because, while Soapbox has brutally high standards for their ingredients, the prices are incredibly reasonable. That bundle above, for example, is only $31.95 – for everything. That’s a hand soap, shampoo, conditioner, bar soap, and bodywash – for $32. Sort of a screamin’ deal.
Their packaging has undergone a major upgrade, and if you’re picky about your soaps and hair cleansing products, get ready for this laundry list of Soapbox ethical qualities:

That last one is my favorite! 1-for-1 means that, with every soap purchase, Soapbox donates a bar of soap to someone in need. (Soap = Hope!) Soap is at the top of the list for many shelters around the country due to its constant use, and Soapbox focuses their efforts on domestic aid, which is something I haven’t seen very often among 1-for-1 brands.
Each bottle has a unique Hope Code that you can input into the Soapbox website to see exactly where the donation from your bottle of soap or hair stuff is going. You can find Soapbox products at Rite Aid and Walgreens all over the country. They’re even easy to find in my little, dumb, island town! If you see some on the shelves, pick it up, but if you don’t see it on your local shelves, don’t worry! It’s all on Amazon for you, as well as on the Soapbox website!
Timberland Earthkeepers
I’m always on the quest for good shoes. Currently, I have a very modest collection of less than 10 pairs of shoes which, if you knew me in my SPEND ALL THE MONEY days, should come as a shock. I think I topped out at 64 pairs of shoes, at one point. My closet looked like a robot Christmas tree lot with all of my shoe trees scattered around. It wasn’t good, and the shoes were mostly low quality (“affordable”) dress shoes that I wore to the job I hated. Starting B&B changed all of that, and raised my standards for “good shoes” about 5000%.
In desperate need of some summer shoes – for both staying cool in the heat and getting into trouble – I took to Poshmark. After a while, I noticed that the shoes in my “Likes” had a noticeable bias towards Timberland Earthkeepers, which I had absolutely never worn before. I knew of Timberland boots because, hi, I was alive in the 1990s and early 2000s. What I didn’t know was the scope of their designs, and how incredibly ethical this brand is trying to be.
Timberland Earthkeepers, specifically, use at least 50% recyclable materials. The leather (yes, real leather) is from a company that is rated Silver for improved energy, waste and water management. The fabric shaft is made with “Bionic canvas” which contains recycled PET (aka plastic bottles) and the rubber sole is also partially recycled! Considering this info was secondary to me falling in love with the shoes designs, I can say I’m pretty damn pleased with my newfound favorite shoe brand.
Timberland Earthkeeper Authentics Canvas Fold-Down Boots in Folkstone Grey
These were the first Timberland shoes I pulled the trigger on, and they single-handedly got me hooked on the brand. While these boots typically sell for around $100 brand new, the pair I found on Poshmark were in amazing condition for only $23. 
Sure, they had some loved spots and a couple minimal scuffs, but they were already broken in for me, and they look even better when they’ve been loved for a few months.
The leather part of these boots is a beautiful blue-grey color, and the canvas looks almost like linen. Another feature that is adorable, but that I regularly ignore, is that these boots are lined with a super cute, blue floral fabric, so if you’re the type that likes to flip the top of the boots down, there is an adorable design element built-in to help make that as cute as possible.
Timberland Earthkeeper Greenside Sandals
After losing my sandals in a pool-noodle stealing operation in Mexico, I was in desperate need for a pair that would withstand my shenanigans for 2018. That means they need to be well-made with high-quality materials, be easy to throw on and kick off, and go with everything from dress shorts to a swimsuit coverup. Luckily, Timberland Earthkeepers came to the rescue – again, via Poshmark.
After stumbling upon exactly one pair of these sandals, I knew I had to act fast. They are cute as hell, made with strong materials, have a slip-on back strap, and are extremely versatile. Unlike the boots, which had many styles and colors available in my size on Poshmark, these were a one-of-a-kind find, so I contacted the seller ASAP and haggled the price of these down to a measly $27.
In hindsight, I should have taken a picture of the soles because Timberland makes some tough-ass shoes. The soles of these sandals are nearly identical to the Timberland boots that I got. They look like they’re ready to carry you through a construction zone – with a kitten wedge.

2 Dope Queens

If you’re not privy to this existentially funny duo, you better wise up. Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson are a comedians turned podcasters turned legendary show hosts, and their eponymous series on HBO just got renewed for four more hour-long specials!
These two women make me wish I lived 1,000 miles closer to my best friends. Each one of their shows is an intimate peek into not only their friendship, but what life is like as a black woman living in New York City. Speckled between Phoebe and Jessica’s hilarious banter and BFF-arguments are special guests. There are a handful of stand-up comics that get to present a small set, and each episode has a non-comedian guest that shows up just to chat with the girls and participate in a little activity. For example, they bring out a full brunch spread, complete with cocktails, before bringing out the Queen of Brunch herself, Sarah Jessica Parker, who is adorable. Together, the 2 Dope Queen educate a curious and eager SJP about the ins and outs of black hair. It’s a must-watch!
Sans Sucre Baking Mixes
No matter how many times I have tried to stay on a healthy eating streak, my sweet tooth always sabotages me. I can’t get rid of it! Moreover, I don’t really want to get rid of it. Not only do I love baking and desserts, but if I can’t spend this life indulging in delicious things, then what’s the point? Luckily, there are tons of products and brands who are trying to ease the tension between sweet teeth and healthy lifestyles. San Sucre is one of those brands and, if you speak even mild, back-of-the-food-label French, you can probably figure out why.
Sans Sucre makes quick and easy baking mixes that have no added sugar. This makes the nutrition facts on a box of brownies look less like fudgy indulgences and more like a small-to-medium granola bar. Recently, I made the Milk Chocolate Brownie mix (around $5 per box) and was pretty impressed with both how easy it was to make and how delicious they were once they were done!
These turned out so incredibly good for being only 80 calories per serving, and they were much lighter than your average full-fat, full-sugar brownie which can feel super heavy and dense. They required exactly three ingredients: the baking mix, water, and 2T of oil. Yes, two tablespoons of oil for an entire batch of no sugar added brownies. That good, very-brownie-like sweetness comes from Stevia! Could this be love?
In addition to brownies, you can find coffee cake mixes, cinnamon “sugar” sprinkles and even no-sugar-added fudge mixes! San Sucre also sent over all kinds of mousse and pie filling mixes, including (but most certainly not limited to): key lime pie, cheesecake, chocolate mousse, and lemon mousse. Plus, the mousse and filling mixes are no added sugar and low fat! So far, I’ve tried nearly all of the brownies they have to offer, but expect to hear from me again when I dive into these!
