Natsu Harem: Fairy GET! 13/14
Nearly there. (人◕ω◕)
Tumblr media
If you guys have been following me for a while, you know I'd never forget Sorano-chan. Sorano Aguria. (人◕ω◕) She's in my Top 4 Natsu ships. Has been for a very long time~ I've been saving the best for last cuz you guys have heard me talk your ears about them for ages. (人◕ω◕)
Tumblr media
When did they meet?
Natsu encountered Sorano during the mission to crush Oracion Seis. At the time, Sorano was working to revive Nirvana, which was Brain's plot to destroy Light Guilds and convert them to the dark side. But for Sorano's part, her dream - her prayer, if you will - was to fade into the sky like an angel. ... In other words, she just wanted freedom. Sorano and the rest of the Seis that worked under Brain were slaves at the Tower of Heaven like Erza, Simon, and their friends. And it simply became their misfortune to be used as pawns by Brain to hold back his more powerful, destructive personality of Zero.
Still, Sorano was among the first to be defeated by the Alliance of Fairy Tail, Lamia Scale, Blue Pegasus, and Cait Shelter. In this iteration, Natsu was the one to capture her and confiscate her Gate Keys. And when Nirvana gets activated... It's not just Richard whose heart is swayed, but Sorano's as well. This was brought about due to Natsu and Erza speaking with her, effectively reminding Sorano of the sister she saved and left behind, when the Zeref worshippers captured her as a child...though Natsu and Erza aren't aware of this, as Sorano privately ruminates on it. Sorano is ashamed to have been a part of something so insidious, feeling she has no right to ever see Yukino again... But she helps the Alliance against her friends, knowing it's best to reel them in and stop Brain.
Tumblr media
Oracion Seis still gets beaten, and Cobra/Erik is still pissed about Brain stabbing them in the back... Unfortunately, there's not much resolution for the Seis on that front. Lahar still takes them away, in addition to Jellal. Sorano has no expectation of ever seeing the light of day again; she doesn't deserve to, or so she thinks. Richard was happy to hear his brother had joined Fairy Tail, and does have hopes of seeing him again someday... Sorano bitterly wishes she had Richard's optimism. ... But she doesn't. Sorano lets Natsu keep her keys, do whatever with them; even if Scorpio and Gemini want to be her spirits still, Sorano doesn't feel worthy enough.
When did they grow closer?
... Nevertheless, during the seven years Fairy Tail's strongest are missing, Warrod Sequen of the Wizard Saints approaches the imprisoned members of Oracion Seis and Grimoire Heart. This happened shortly after Jellal was sprung from prison by Ultear and Meredy; Warrod sees this as a golden opportunity. He gets permission from the Council for an attempted rehab program, and personally takes Sorano, Richard, Erik, Sawyer, Macbeth, Rustyrose, and Azuma under his wing. They're the only ones who showed any interest in freedom with the condition of changing their ways; Zancrow and Kain were too set in their destructive habits. But even so, it's rough getting through to most of them. If it's not guilt gnawing away at them, the former prisoners merely want to do their own things, do soul-searching on their terms. ... Which can't happen, because they're Warrod's responsibility.
To help motivate them, seven years into their rehab, he offers them the chance to participate in the Grand Magic Game. Make a wager out of the competition since Fairy Tail is competing, their best having finally returned. If they can beat Fairy Tail and emerge victorious in the games, they'll have full freedom, no obligation to join any guild... But if Fairy Tail wins, then they'll have to join the fairies. It's not a bet that they're super eager to take on - save for Sorano and Richard, none of the former Oracion Seis or Grimoire Heart want to join Fairy Tail. Nevertheless, when Raven Tail is ousted from the games for foul play, they're given this opportunity to compete.
Sorano had already bumped into Natsu in the first days of the games, roaming around Crocus. He returned her Celestial Spirit keys to her, which just... blew her away. Sorano thought for sure Natsu would have foisted them off on that Heartfillia girl, but he held onto the keys all this time... for her sake. (๑╹ω╹๑ ) Sorano's honestly at a loss for words, and honestly doesn't care about the "bet" anymore. Either way, she's probably gonna be joining Fairy Tail with Richard... It might seem silly to feel indebted to a knucklehead that pounded her into the dirt years ago, but Sorano doesn't care. Fairy Tail's about as free as one can get. They're strong and fight back against monsters like the Balam Alliance.
Tumblr media
... That, and well... (๑╹ω╹๑ );;; It doesn't take her long to see and hear about Yukino-chan. At first she was pretty happy her sister was doing well for herself in a strong guild like Sabertooth... But then she heard about Yukino getting kicked out because of a simple bad matchup in the battles... And Sorano couldn't have been prouder of Natsu raining Hell down on Sabertooth for that. (๑╹ω╹๑ ) Sorano herself might feel powerless, unworthy to go and do anything for Yukino-chan... But like a night in shining armor, Natsu wrecked their shit. Both unofficially and officially. (๑╹ω╹๑ ) She was quite gleeful about him taking down those "Twin Dragons"...
Unfortunately, however, Sorano gets captured like Lucy and Yukino, their golden keys taken to be used to open the gate. Events of the dragon invasion go about the same, just with "Hydra Roots" helping out all the other guilds. And Ultear not using Last Ages~
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When everything blows over, and the members of Warrod's "guild" (as well as Crime Sorciere) are pardoned for their heroic acts in helping save Ishgar from the dragons... Sorano can hardly believe it. Just like that, she's given a new lease on life. Sure, not everyone is happy to be joining Fairy Tail, but they lost the games. They have to accept that. ... Even Sorano has to accept that Yukino-chan will be in the same guild. A reunion she's very conflicted about... But since she's pardoned, Sorano doesn't have many excuses to fall back on, dodging any interactions with her sister. It's just something to get used to. (๑╹ω╹๑ )
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I bring all this background info up, cuz it explains why Natsu gets close to Sorano after the GMG are over. (๑╹ω╹๑ ) With all the new recruits, Natsu was bound to bump shoulders with former Oracion Seis eventually~ Understandably, they largely stick to themselves... in the beginning, at least. But when Natsu hears from Yukino that she and Sorano are sisters, he helps mediate between them for the first couple of talks. In his eyes, they're like Mira and Lisanna... They even have white hair~.... Sisters should get along. (๑╹ω╹๑ ) And between Richard hugging it out with Wally, Erik getting reacquainted with Kinana (formerly Cubelios), and even Azuma and Erza having a solid respect for one another... It doesn't take long for "Hydra Roots" to fully integrate into Fairy Tail.
Tumblr media
Sorano is... rather affectionate with Natsu. Much to the ire of a good few ladies. (๑╹ω╹๑ ) The human embodiment of an angel not only plays matchmaker for Yukino-chan and Natsu, she gets rather cozy with the Dragon Slayer, too. Not only tagging along on jobs with Team Natsu and dragging Yukino along, but also... She was among the first of the new girls to ever see Natsu's house. (๑╹ω╹๑ ) Even if Mira and Erza gripe about it, Sorano makes herself right at home with the pyro~... Natsu doesn't mind how scantily clad she is on a regular basis, he seems rather used to such things... Which intrigues Sorano quite a bit. (๑╹ω╹๑ ) If he has all these perky girls swarming him, how has he not gotten laid yet? How has he not succumbed to ecchi impulses like a lot of the other guys in the guild?
Tumblr media
Of course, in spite of how shameless Sorano can be, it's not mere physical attraction that draws her to Natsu. He's more than just candy for the eyes. (๑╹ω╹๑ ) He's strong as hell, and the way her cares for all his friends is... It's very pleasant to be around. And his acknowledgement of her strength, depending on her more in the heat of battle than that Heartfillia chick... Sorano-chan takes pride in that. (๑╹ω╹๑ ) Sure, Natsu says Heartfillia is strong in her own way, yadda, yadda, yadda, but what's Heartfillia bring to the table besides her spirits? At least Sorano and Yukino have hand-to-hand combat training. And moreover, Sorano has her... angels~.... \(๑╹ω╹๑ )/ Heartfillia gets kidnapped and smacked around all the time~... While Sorano is a proud fighter in her own right. (๑╹ω╹๑ ) ... Now, one downside is that Natsu doesn't do well on the Olympia.... But hey, even motion sickness can be "cute"~... And unlike that armored sardine redhead, Sorano never punches Natsu in the gut to let him rest in her lap. No sir. His face just gets smothered in Sorano's thighs or her bosom. Whichever is closest at the time~! \(๑╹ω╹๑ )/
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When did friendship turn to something more?
Sorano, like Mira, moves pretty fast to get what she wants. (๑╹ω╹๑ ) Sure, being Natsu's friend for the first several months before Fairy Tail's "disbanded" is a good taste of what having the pyro in her life is like... But Sorano-chan is greedy. Which is precisely why after Alvarez blows over, Sorano is allllll over Natsu without reservation in the slightest. (๑╹ω╹๑ ) She cottons onto Mira's proposal plans... And makes plans of her own. Ultear might beat Sorano to the "pregnancy" stage, but she proposes to Natsu like Mira does... And screws hubby long and hard after getting hitched. (๑╹ω╹๑ ) Of course this means Natsu has to marry all the girls pining after him... And it's a rather chaotic ceremony and afterparty... But they pull it off~... Mostly due to Sorano pushing for the competition and polygamy. (๑╹ω╹๑ ) Hubby should be loved, and have many, many children~... Sure, gentler girls like Yukino-chan are scandalized at how fast they move, but Sorano insists that she knows what Yukino wants. What they all want. (๑╹ω╹๑ )(๑╹ω╹๑ )(๑╹ω╹๑ )
It's definitely a new challenge for Natsu too satisfy all these ladies... But he loves each and every one of them. Even that horny angel of his~... It's another challenge entirely to keep everyone from taking disagreements too personally. There are factions in this harem. Sorano and Yukino. Wendy and Chelia. Ultear and Meredy. Juvia and Meredy/Juvia and Lisanna. Erza and Kagura. Lisanna and Mira.... (๑╹ω╹๑ ) But Natsu's used to brawls everyday... And he wouldn't miss this adventure for the world~ \(๑╹ω╹๑ )/

On the surface, Comic-Con International 2023 looked like it did in years past. Throngs of fans, many in costume, crowded intersections beneath glossy advertisements for television shows dozens of stories high. Inside the convention center, people inched through the packed exhibition floor, lining up for exclusive merchandise and collectibles and work from their favorite artists. Across the convention’s many panel sites, experts discussed a wide range of pop culture and genre fiction topics. Some attendees played tabletop games; others met for anime-viewing sessions. Comic artists and publishers gathered for the Eisners, their industry’s most prestigious award.
But a trip into Hall H Saturday afternoon underscored the strangeness of this year’s convention, which fell two and a half months into the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike and just a week into the parallel strike from the film and television actors of the Screen Actors Guild—American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA). In an ordinary year, Hall H’s 6,100 seats would have been filled by people who’d literally waited all day (or night) to get inside, and networks and studios would have shown them exclusive footage accompanied by A-list talent onstage—a rare opportunity for fans and the entertainment industry to face each other directly. This year, you could simply walk into the partly empty Hall H; at the Star Trek presentation, entertainment journalist Scott Mantz stood alone at the dais, queuing up sizzle reels and calling out absent actors’ names for rounds of applause. In that room, it was glaringly obvious that this was a San Diego Comic-Con without Hollywood.
There have, of course, been many SDCCs without Hollywood—the “comic” in its name is a reminder of its origins as the Golden State Comic Book Convention, which a few hundred people first attended in 1970. Over the decades, the event’s scope steadily expanded, but the studios and big genre franchises only began to dominate the space in the past decade and a half. That dominance defined the convention’s role in the entertainment industry in turn: a place for trailer drops and major announcements, and for many industry-side people, a chance to see a physical embodiment of “fandom,” even if only a tiny slice of fan culture is represented there.
Some of Hollywood’s major players have been pulling back from SDCC since the height of the corporate saturation in the mid-2010s; Star Wars, for example, hasn’t had much of a presence in years, as Disney shifted fan-facing activity to its own events like Star Wars Celebration and D23. But this year, with the writers already striking and a SAG-AFTRA strike looming, many studios and networks began to cancel their scheduled programming; when the actors’ strike officially began and SAG-AFTRA forbade members from doing any promotional work, the SDCC schedule became a sea of cancellations. In advance of the convention, there was speculation that Hollywood’s withdrawal might mean a return to its roots—that perhaps comics could once again be the star of the show.
But even in absentia, Hollywood still hung over a good deal of the convention, which is as much an entertainment-industry event as a fan-oriented one. Many WGA and SAG-AFTRA members have spoken about this year’s strike motivations as “existential”: the feeling that this is a major inflection point, for the entertainment industry specifically and for workers broadly.
That feeling was palpable in San Diego, and not just from the actors and writers who attended in a non-promotional capacity. Since the strikes began, the studios have seemingly worked to pit fans against the people who make the things they love, framing delays as the fault of the striking writers, rather than unwillingness from the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents the studios, to give writers a deal they find fair. Online, this framing has been largely rejected by fans, and that spirit seemed to carry over to SDCC too. There was a sense that an unusual—and yes, for some, disappointing—Comic-Con was an absolutely necessary one, because the future of entertainment media on all sides of the equation was at stake.
On Friday morning, a group wearing familiar-looking black shirts set up shop at an intersection across from the convention center that is usually occupied by network-sponsored promoters or a particularly persistent group of protestors who shout at people that they’re going to hell. This morning’s group was made up of some of the more than 1,000 San Diego-based members of SAG-AFTRA, who, in lieu of joining the picket lines outside studios and the offices of streaming services in Los Angeles, were raising awareness about the strike outside a mostly actor-free Comic-Con.
“When I was a young man, we were celebrating the superheroes in comic books. Now, because of Hollywood, they’ve leapt off the page and onto the big screen,” says Lou Slocum, who has lived in San Diego since 1972 and became a member of SAG in 1995. “Normally they would be here and they would be celebrated. The closest we can get are the superheroes in cosplay right now.”
Slocum stresses the group’s support for Comic-Con and its attendees, and he makes it clear the SAG-AFTRA gathering isn’t a picket line and is not intended to impede anyone’s access to the convention. He expresses sympathy for anyone who might have been expecting to see their favorite actor or footage from their favorite show, but he hasn’t met with resistance from fans—on the contrary, he says, they’ve been greeted with a great deal of support from passers-by. “The people that I have met today have been all thumbs-up, V for victory, hugs,” he says. “We love it, and we’re very pleasantly surprised.”
While some panels and programming didn’t acknowledge the strike at all, plenty did—and some even focused on it. Slocum began his career in voice-over, which he says is like “the canary in the coal mine” right now, a sentiment stressed in a panel on the future of artificial intelligence in entertainment hosted by the National Association of Voice Actors. Panelists described the immediate threat to not just their livelihoods, but their own personal autonomy, as companies and fans alike use AI tools to manipulate their voices without their consent. (SAG-AFTRA national executive director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, who’d joined the panel, got a big laugh when he compared the situation to Ursula and Ariel in The Little Mermaid.)
The WGA shares different but equally pressing worries about AI, as well as broader concerns about the future of film and television writing. The strike served as an intermittent joke during a long-running television writers’ panel Saturday morning. “We really can’t talk about anything, because of the strike, so we’re going to keep these introductions going for an hour and a half,” moderator Mark A. Altman quipped halfway through the bios of the 11 panelists—but the vast majority of the conversation focused on how deeply concerned these established writers were about younger writers starting out in the industry.
“The whole point of the strike is we’re fighting for the future, and the future of our craft,” says C. J. Hoke, a writer who attended the panel and who became a member of the WGA last summer. “Seeing experienced showrunners talking about that and really rooting for the next generation is inspiring, and just encourages me to stay on the line with everyone.” Aside from the backing of members of her own profession, Hoke observed a wide range of solidarity at the con, which she characterized as a “swelling from the ground level.”
“It’s been wonderful seeing people on the floor with ‘We support the WGA’ signs and buttons and shirts,” she says. “I think everyone here really cares about the storytelling, and really supports the writers.”
Karina Montgomery was one con-goer with that sort of button—hers read “This Character Wouldn’t Exist Without WGA and SAG-AFTRA Labor,” which she wore over an impeccable cosplay of Helly R. from Severance. Montgomery, who also moderates the Severance fan Discord and contributes to the Severance wiki, began the week worrying about confusing messaging from SAG-AFTRA on fan activity, particularly over whether cosplay was considered scabbing. (The organization has since clarified that its guidance on cosplay was intended only for paid influencers, not ordinary fans.) “I was very happy to get to show up,” Montgomery says. “But I wanted to still show that I was supporting, so I designed this button.”
For many cosplayers, conventions like SDCC are about both creators and fellow fans. “The whole thing is connecting with people who love the shows and support the shows and want to be seen by the creators of the shows,” says Montgomery. “To be like, ‘Look, we see what you do, and we love it.’”
To her, solidarity for the strikes was more important than a desire to cosplay—but cosplay could be a sort of solidarity too. “I'm gonna love a show that I love regardless of whether it’s canceled,” Montgomery says. “But if, for example, it became a scab activity to cosplay, I would not. I want to support the people who make the show that I love—I’m a booster. If I’m supporting the AMPTP by dressing like this, I don’t want to dress like this.”
But many creators weren’t even at the con to see these shows of solidarity. Others felt the absence of fan-creator interactions acutely. It was veteran TV writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach’s 22nd Comic-Con, and one in which he would have, under normal circumstances, promoted his writing on the new season of The Witcher. (Full disclosure: Grillo-Marxuach is a friend of this writer.) “I would love to do that work for Netflix right now,” he says. “For a lot of us, those are the goodies. You write a show and you get to come here and meet the fans, and they’re excited, and maybe you show them the show, and they recognize who’s the person who wrote that show.”
Grillo-Marxuach described the “gaps where Hollywood should be”—for all the talk of the event potentially returning to its comics-first roots, he noted that the film and television industry has undeniably altered SDCC a great deal. And those missing pieces were noticeable.
Because it’s in those connections between the people who love stuff and the people who make the stuff they love that so much of SDCC rests, from the fans cheering for the biggest studio presentations in Hall H to the indie comic artist signing their work on the exhibition floor. The event is at its heart a consumerist one, and in attendees’ quests for material objects, that human connection is often diminished—the relationship is often boiled down to fan and corporation, with someone to do the selling in the middle.
In a normal year, SDCC puts live human faces on both sides of the fan-creator divide—and this year, those human faces helped contextualize the strike, giving nonstriking attendees a firsthand view on the struggles facing entertainment industry workers. Both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA have raised alarms about a future in which studio and streaming executives steadily whittle away the number of people making movies and television shows, using AI to permanently remove them from the equation. It’s not hard to imagine a world in which the fan-corporate relationship is the only one left in that chain.
Fans also understand that the writers’ and actors’ struggles are directly entwined with their own. “Genre fans tend to be very aware of the writers, very aware of what the talent does, and they’re also very aware of how much they have to pay to actually see the things they want to watch,” says Grillo-Marxuach. “That financial sting puts them in a similar place to the writers. And a lot of the time, they feel like they're getting nickel-and-dimed to death, too, on their viewing, and I think that creates a lot of solidarity with us.”
But many fans are also workers, and they can see how these strikes echo their own job concerns. SAG-AFTRA’s Slocum cites parallel labor movements brewing across the country, from fellow entertainment workers like animation artists and members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees to Starbucks baristas and UPS drivers. “I really feel we're at the beginning of a middle-class stand in this country,” he says. Grillo-Marxuach echoes those sentiments: “One of the reasons people are so sympathetic to us is that the problems of writers as labor mirror the problems of labor as labor right now.”
While the strikes seem likely to stretch on in the near term, it seems unlikely that next year’s Comic-Con will be much similar to this one. But the strikes that utterly altered this year’s event will certainly define its future—and the future of the entertainment industry on the whole. Many fans who were already invested in their favorite shows and films now care just as deeply about the labor conditions under which those shows and films were made. Their consciousness, Slocum says, has been given a raise.

The WGA strikes feel like a rare example of union power in the US. Why do we hear so little about equivalent unions in Europe?
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) Strikes that started on 2 May this year are yet to come to a satisfying resolution for the thousands of writers who have taken a stand against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) over issues such as streaming residuals and AI.
In the process of striking, the WGA has put much of Hollywood on standstill. The picket line is an almost sacred barrier among the creatives of the industry, with actors and directors standing side-by-side with the writers, while productions have been stalled from development stage to shooting.
With over 11,500 writers taking part in the strike, it’s the biggest WGA action since the writers strike that took place between 2007 and 2008. So many creatives taking a stance against the profiteering streaming companies that are seeking to devalue their work is a refreshing sight. It’s also a very unusual one in the US.
Compared to Europe, the US isn’t known for strikes. The French, for example, are so ready to advocate for their working rights that strikes are joked about as more common than working in other countries. In truth, the French approach to striking is an impressive one, ceaselessly baring their teeth whenever a benefit – such as Emmanuel Macron’s recent pension reforms – comes under attack.
Similarly, the UK has been rocked in recent months by waves of strikes across almost every public industry – including train drivers, paramedics, nurses, teachers, firefighters and civil servants themselves – in opposition to a decade’s worth of state underfunding by the incumbent Conservative Party.
Yet on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, such strike actions are comparatively unheard of. Private companies see irregular strikes – New York Times journalists walked out en masse for the first time in 40 years last December – but strikes across industries backed by unions are less common. Part of this comes down to the different approach to labour unions in the US compared with most European countries.
Sector-wide vs. Private industry
Typically in the US, to be a part of a labour union that will protect you against your company, the union will be formed in-house. This means that the union will only represent the employees of that specific company.
With US unions frequently existing only within the walls of the private company, there is a monetary incentive for higher-level executives to suppress union membership and its powers.
In Europe, most unions represent sectors instead of companies. Take journalism, for example. In the UK there is the National Union of Journalists (NUJ). If you’re a part of the NUJ, it doesn’t matter what company you work for; they can’t exploit you if you’re doing journalistic work for them.
This being the common way European unions work compared to US unions makes the work of the WGA more striking. It’s exactly the kind of union that is unusual in the US – one that represents a sector instead of a single company’s employees.
There are still labour unions that function like the European ones in the US – the Teamsters truckers unions being a particularly notable one – but participation in them is less frequent than in European countries.
As writing for screen or television is largely a role taken on by freelancers, the fact the WGA can back up this creative career is refreshing. Thousands of writers standing up to the capitalist urges of streaming media to deprive a creative role of its worth is a heartwarming story to anyone in a creative field.
Who protects the Europeans?
How then, do European writers fare when it comes to their rights? Are there similar protections and unions fighting for their corner?
“The WGA is right to stand up in the US, since American script writers are not as well protected as European script writers,” says Basil Ader, a lawyer for the firm August Debouzy.
Considering one of the main contentions of the WGA strikes – that production companies might opt to replace writers with AI or supplement them with the technology, Ader suggests it would be harder to do in Europe.
“Under French law, scriptwriters are considered authors, which gives them several privileges related to their moral rights, in particular the right of respect for their work, which means that they cannot be forced to modify their creation against their will.”
Producers can add co-authors to them when this is provided for in the contract, but today there is nothing yet, even at the European level, about the possibility of adding additions made by AI.
“French script writers are therefore protected by their ‘moral rights’, and by the fact that nothing in the production contracts would authorise producers to substitute their creations with AI,” Ader adds.
In France, there are multiple authors societies that a screenwriter would be able to join, including the Society of Dramatic Authors and Composers (SACD) and the Civil Society of Multimedia Authors (SCAM). Additionally, Ader points out that European authors outside of France will be protected by similar laws thanks to the Berne Convention, an international agreement on the ways to protect artistic works.
The UK also has similar writers unions to the WGA, SACD and SCAM. Its own Writers’ Guild of Great Britain (WGGB) has represented writers in the UK since its inception in 1959.
The WGGB negotiates agreements on pay with major British industry players like the BBC in TV and the National Theatre for stage works. They also provide other benefits like contract vetting and a pension scheme to its members.
While industry standard agreements with major organisations like the UK’s BBC are beneficial to all writers, only WGGB members have access to benefits like pensions. Where the WGGB and the WGA differ is that joining the WGGB is entirely optional. By comparison, the WGA is such a powerful union in the US that it is practically impossible to get a writer working for a production without them already being a member. This is where it gets its strength to mount huge campaigns like the current strikes.
The WGA has already stated that although it can’t discipline non-members for strikebreaking, it can permanently bar them from ever joining the WGA. As part of the WGA’s agreements require US production companies to only hire WGA writers, breaking the strike now would effectively blacklist them.
Nonetheless, unions in Europe are supportive of the WGA strikes. After all, many British writers work in the US and are just as prone to exploitation as their American colleagues.
On 11 May, WGGB Treasurer Gail Renard was one of a number of writers who staged an impromptu protest outside the Brussels office of the Motion Picture Association (MPA) in solidarity with the WGA.
“As the MPA is made up of some of the same companies as the AMPTP, it seemed the perfect opportunity to show our solidarity with our sister guild and their members in the US," said Renard.
"Writers guilds and unions across the world are flexing their collective muscle to face down the existential threat to our livelihoods that has taken our US colleagues out on strike. This is just the beginning. And we’re a creative bunch, so when the MPA invited execs up on the roof to see the sunset we thought we’d spoil the view!”

Random BSD headcanon: The Floor Is Lava
A tradition started in the Port Mafia when Dazai and Chuuya first met: randomly screaming “the floor is lava”
the entire mafia is in on the game and the only rule is no using abilities to stay off the ground (such as Chuuya floating or Mori being carried by Elise) but you can use abilities to knock people around
Even Mori will leap onto a table instinctively when it’s called because refusing to participate is essentially consenting to being relentlessly pranked by skk
It’s also a test they do with new potential alliances and the like, a vibe check to see if you’re gonna be cool or if you have a stick up your ass. Luckily most people have heard of it by now…in Japan.
Fitzgerald and the guild did not know about it, though most of them had the instinct to jump for the nearest furniture and a few were sitting down anyway so they just lifted their feet. Poor Francis gets teased to this day about dying in the lava in his first meeting with the mafia 😔
It doesn’t just apply in the building either, or even to the mafia anymore. It’s the entire city more or less.
in one notable squabble between the agency and the Black Lizard, Tachihara was pissing off Gin who decided to call TFIL in revenge as he was nowhere near anything to climb on and would be instantly eliminated, and Kunikida will never let anyone forget how that day he defeated Hirotsu in a 1v1 while hanging one handed from the underside of a fire escape
And by defeated in a 1v1 I very much do mean he tased that old man before kicking him off a dumpster in order to not lose a children’s game
Akutagawa never really liked the game until he met Atsushi, but now the two of them get crazy competitive over it
One time Katai was present for a round and he just collapsed onto the floor and began dramatically screaming “OH GOD IT BURNS! IT BURNS! I SEE THE LIGHT!” Before pretending to die and making everyone laugh so hard they forgot what was even going on before
Dazai in response built a little figurine out of tin foil, glued it to a small box, wrote “best actor” on it in glitter gel pen, presented it to Katai. Katai keeps it on his counter and has added “Oscar winning actor” to his email signature

SWTOR: It’s how you play the game
In lurking around the SWTOR board (I always tell myself to only read the bug reports and dev tracker. I often fail) I’ve noticed that they always have players who suggest measures to force people to group up or participate in PvP, such as removing the PvP instances and returning to the days when players could be flagged for PvP. I think for some, they’re very obliquely saying “please give me more ways to grief and gank other players since I can’t do that as much as I want to.” There’s really no other reason to ask for more ways to attack other players who have not opted to be attacked and have actively opted out of PvP instances and activities. They can’t get enough people to PvP with them so they want to force it. And I think there are those who are very social and extroverted and honestly do not understand introverts or players who would prefer to remain solo. There are people like that in real life; they exist online too. For the others, I’m not sure what they hope to achieve. IMHO the people who want to group or PvP are doing so. The players who are avoiding those activities don’t want to do them. Full stop. If you force them to do things they do not want to do in a game they are playing to have fun, there are two likely outcomes: 1. They will skip that content if they can, and quit the game if they can’t. 2. They will participate but in a totally half-assed “I don’t want to be here and I’m just getting it over with” way People play games for a lot of reasons, but for most I would wager that they’re not expecting it to be like a job where they have to do tasks they hate. I would think that even if they grind for gear or achievements, there’s some part of them that actually wants to do those things, or at least has decided that it’s not that big a deal to them. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the game letting people know that certain types of content exist, or encouraging players to try it, but SWTOR already does that. There are ‘intro to PvP’ and ‘intro to group finder’ quests and other rudimentary missions to help people connect with others. The Activity Panel has specific sections for those seeking PvP or group play. But there’s a difference between showing someone that the content is there, if they want it, and forcing it on players. . Forcing people to play types of content they don’t want to play does. Not. Work. IMHO. They’ve tried this in SWTOR. They tried to coerce people into playing Ops by tying the end of the Oricon storyline to two operations. What happened? People said “fuck you, no” and just didn’t complete the Oricon arc. They didn’t play Oricon on subsequent characters. SWTOR tried this shit again on Iokath by forcing the Machines of War op into the storyline, and again, I would guess that most said “hell no,” just left the Op in their logs, totally ignored, and abandoned the quest as soon as they could. They tried to tie 258 gear to a world boss/op and people just shrugged and didn’t get 258 gear. The Op quest giver on Onderon is nearly completely ignored too from what I’ve seen. I’ve almost never seen anyone actually talk to that droid even though they’ve got a purple quest marker.
And the same is true for the one attempt they’ve made to try to get players into PvP. Major Pierce and Fourex’s Alliance Alerts are ignored on every single one of my characters who is not a Sith Warrior or Trooper who can get them back automatically without PvP.
I just wish that there was more understanding that there are all sorts of players in an MMORPG - everything from those super extroverted types who want to join a guild and raid and PvP all the time to those who are just there to decorate strongholds, to super introverted types who turn off all chat channels and want to be left alone. If someone’s enjoying the game and isn’t disrupting other players, perhaps it’s a cue to leave them the hell alone, mind your business and just concentrate on your own play. If you feel like you’re not getting enough people to join your activities the way you want, go join a guild or PUG or play in the PvP instances instead of trying to force others to join you in a play style they don’t like.

On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549, an Airbus A320 on a flight from New York City's LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte, North Carolina, struck a flock of birds shortly after take-off, losing all engine power. Unable to reach any airport for an emergency landing, pilots Chesley Sullenberger and Jeffrey Skiles glided the plane to a ditching in the Hudson River off Midtown Manhattan. All 155 people on board were rescued by nearby boats, with a few serious injuries.
This water landing of a powerless jetliner became known as the "Miracle on the Hudson", and a National Transportation Safety Board official described it as "the most successful ditching in aviation history". The Board rejected the notion that the pilot could have avoided ditching by returning to LaGuardia or diverting to nearby Teterboro Airport.
The pilots and flight attendants were awarded the Master's Medal of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators in recognition of their "heroic and unique aviation achievement".
An NTSB board member called the ditching "the most successful ... in aviation history. These people knew what they were supposed to do and they did it and as a result, no lives were lost." New York State Governor David Paterson called the incident "a Miracle on the Hudson." U.S. President George W. Bush said he was "inspired by the skill and heroism of the flight crew," and praised the emergency responders and volunteers. President-elect Barack Obama said that everyone was proud of Sullenberger's "heroic and graceful job in landing the damaged aircraft." He thanked the crew, whom he invited to his inauguration five days later.
The Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators awarded the crew the rarely bestowed Master's Medal on January 22, 2009 for outstanding aviation achievement, at the discretion of the Master of the Guild. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg presented the crew with the Keys to the City, and Sullenberger with a replacement copy of a library book lost on the flight, Sidney Dekker's Just Culture: Balancing Safety and Accountability. Rescuers received Certificates of Honor.
The crew received a standing ovation at the Super Bowl XLIII on February 1, 2009, and Sullenberger threw the ceremonial first pitch of the 2009 Major League Baseball season for the San Francisco Giants. His Giants jersey was inscribed with the name "Sully" and the number 155 – the count of people aboard the plane.
On July 28, passengers Dave Sanderson and Barry Leonard organized a thank you luncheon for emergency responders from Hudson County, New Jersey, on the shores of Palisades Medical Center in North Bergen, New Jersey, where 57 passengers had been brought following their rescue. Present were members of the U.S. Coast Guard, North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue, NY Waterway Ferries, the American Red Cross, Weehawken Volunteer First Aid, the Weehawken Police Department, West New York E.M.S., North Bergen E.M.S., the Hudson County Office of Emergency Management, the New Jersey E.M.S. Task Force, the Guttenberg Police Department, McCabe Ambulance, the Harrison Police Department, and doctors and nurses who treated survivors.
Sullenberger was named Grand Marshal for the 2010 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California.
In August 2010, aeronautical chart publisher Jeppesen issued a humorous approach plate titled "Hudson Miracle APCH," dedicated to the five crew of Flight 1549 and annotated "Presented with Pride and Gratitude from your friends at Jeppesen."
Sullenberger retired on March 3, 2010, after thirty years with US Airways and its predecessor, Pacific Southwest Airlines. At the end of his final flight he was reunited with Skiles and a number of the passengers from Flight 1549.
In December 2010, Sullenberger was appointed an Officer of France's Legion of Honour.
N106US, the accident aircraft, was moved to a salvage yard in New Jersey and put up for auction a week after the accident, but remained without takers for over two years. In 2011, it was purchased by the Carolinas Aviation Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina, and reassembled, minus the engines, in the museum's main hangar, where it is currently on display.
In 2013, the entire crew was inducted into the International Air & Space Hall of Fame at the San Diego Air & Space Museum.
The ditching was recorded by several closed-circuit television cameras. Television reports and documentaries produced soon afterward contained extensive video of the ditching and rescue, and recorded interviews with the aircrew, passengers, rescuers, and other key participants.
Sullenberger's 2009 memoir, Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters was adapted into a feature film Sully, directed by Clint Eastwood. It starred Tom Hanks as Sullenberger and Aaron Eckhart as co-pilot Jeff Skiles. It was released by Warner Bros. on September 9, 2016.
In May 2011, CBS News hired Sullenberger as an aviation and safety expert.
His second book, Making a Difference: Stories of Vision and Courage from America's Leaders, was published in May 2012. He was ranked second in Time's Top 100 Most Influential Heroes and Icons of 2009, after Michelle Obama.
In December 2018, he received the Tony Jannus Award for distinguished achievement in commercial air transportation.
Sullenberger's speech before Congress concerning U.S. civil aviation is featured in Michael Moore's 2009 documentary Capitalism: A Love Story.
Sullenberger is also referred to in the 2011 romantic comedy film Friends with Benefits. Throughout the film, Justin Timberlake's character repeatedly suggests to people he meets aboard planes that modern airplanes practically fly themselves, and that Sullenberger's feat was less impressive than it was portrayed, an idea for which he encounters incredulity and hostility. Mila Kunis' character is also seen reading Sullenberger's English Wikipedia article.
The 2010 song "A Real Hero", by French electronica artist College and the band Electric Youth, is about Captain Sullenberger and the Flight 1549 water landing. Frontman Austin Garrick was inspired to write the song by his grandfather, whose reference to Sullenberger as "a real human being and a real hero" became the song's refrain.
Radio personality Garrison Keillor wrote "Pilot Song: The Ballad of Chesley Sullenberger III" for the January 17, 2009 edition of his radio variety show A Prairie Home Companion.
Sullenberger appeared as himself in a cameo role in the 2017 film Daddy's Home 2.
"Hudson River Runway", the March 14, 2011, episode of the TV series Mayday, documents the events around Flight 1549's emergency landing, and contains interviews with several of its real-life participants. Captain Sullenberger is not interviewed in the show, but is portrayed in reenactments by actor Christopher Britton.
President George H. W. Bush's service dog Sully, who was assigned to Bush in mid-2018 after the death of Bush's wife Barbara, was named after Sullenberger.
Sully is featured in the pilot of the 2020 Fox cartoon series Duncanville.
Sullenberger was widely celebrated for landing the plane with no loss of life.
Jeffrey Bruce "Jeff" Skiles was flying as a First Officer on flight 1549 due to a staff reduction at US Airways; he had usually flown as Captain prior to the staff reduction and actually had slightly more flight hours than Sullenberger (though he had much less experience in the Airbus A320).
Both Skiles' parents were pilots during his childhood, and he became a pilot himself when he was just sixteen years old. He first worked flying cargo airplanes, and then worked for Midstate Airlines from 1983 to 1986, but at the time of the emergency landing he had been with US Airways for 23 years.
Atul Gawande, author of The Checklist Manifesto, asserted that the successful emergency landing relied on the cooperation of Sullenberger and Skiles. Gawande's central premise is that even really experienced people in any field encounter rare events, and that successfully coping with the rare event requires first the careful anticipation of future emergencies, and second, preparing a well thought-out list of steps to follow, in advance.
In his book Gawande reminded readers that, during an emergency, there are so many tasks to complete, that the co-pilot is working at least as hard as the pilot. Sullenberger had taken on the task of finding a safe place to land, and actually landing, leaving his experienced copilot Skiles the task of following the checklist to try to restart the jet engines. He noted that Skiles was able to complete the checklist in the less than three minute period between the bird strike and the landing, noting this was "something investigators later testified to be "very remarkable" in the time frame he had—and something they found difficult to replicate in simulation."
Skiles went on to become the Vice President of the Coalition of Airline Pilots Associations (CAPA) that represents the interests of 28,000 airline pilots in safety and security issues. In this role he was instrumental in the creation of the First Officer Qualification rule which significantly increased the requirements for training and experience of First Officers on the flight deck of US registered airliners. Skiles joined with the Families of Continental Flight 3407 and the National Air Disaster Alliance to mold the creation of and ensure passage of the Airline Safety Act of 2010. This sweeping legislation significantly improved safety in the US airline industry and as of 2020 there has not been even one fatality due to a US airline accident in over 10 years.
Skiles is a writer and since 2011 has published over 100 articles on safety and general interest aviation topics in nationally distributed magazines such as Sport Aviation, FLYING, Air & Space, PilotMAG, Midwest Flyer, Vintage Airplane, and the Physicians Executive Journal.
Jeffrey Bruce "Jeff" Skiles, as of 2020, is piloting Boeing 787 Dreamliners for American Airlines.

Question Round A
This is no fancy post, but I wanna post some questions, just so they are out of my head. ;)
Tumblr media
Question 1
How come that it's suddenly common knowledge among Fairy Tail members that Ivan founded a guild AND who that guild is (and also how can they recognise Ivan but know nothing about Precht?)
I suppose after Laxus pulled his failure of a Coup and Gajeel successfully infiltrated Raven Tail, that knowledge quickly made it's round through the guild. I just thought it was odd, given how it took years from Ivan's banishment ALL THE WAY to Gajeel joining FT for even Makarov to learn the whereabouts of his son (years after Laxus managed to follow up with his dad, too). It's like Makarov wasn't actually interested at all in his son, despite the portrayed gravity of the situation.
Tumblr media
Question 2
It appears that Ivan didn't know who was partaking in the games for Fairy Tail? So firstly, would Gajeel not have been in contact with Raven Tail after their 7-year disappearance to report like a good under-cover agent should? I would have expected he'd, as much as he knows, forward the info on who's coming to the games to Ivan, as much as he would tell Makarov what Raven Tail is up to. But I guess not. xD
Secondly, Ivan not knowing who participates kinda clashes with his later stated "true goal" of Raven Tail's presence at the games. Because that "true goal" requires Laxus, specifically, to be fighting against Alexei (although any other member would have done, too, since Ivan could cover up the fight with a illusion easily). Without Laxus, Ivan wouldn't have had anyone to blackmail! And thus his greatest reason to be at the games is just being a dick in FT's face. So would Ivan have planned to lure Laxus in somehow? To blackmail him outside the ring?
Tumblr media
Question 3
Or more of a statement, really. But this moment appears to be some sort of foreshadowing that wasn't satisfied. It looks like Ivan is expecting something specific from Gajeel, like a nice self-destruction in the ring when fighting for Fairy Tail or a public desertion. Something more dramatic really, than it was. In the end, they just assumed Gajeel was the mole and that's it. xD
I am not even sure how Ivan put any trust into Gajeel anyway. All in all, Gajeel spend way too little time with Raven Tail (half a year max until Tenrou Island) and how he managed to sneak into Ivan's personal office to go through the accounting is beyond me. Yes, Gajeel is a made to look like a great detective, but I refuse to believe Ivan is so stupid to NOT protect the privacy of his papers in some shape or form. Gajeel should not be able to even enter Ivan's private domain unsupervised, period. xD
I also wonder how Gajeel sold his services to Ivan. Did Ivan try to recruit him before Makarov did? Did he accept and then changed his mind when Makarov also offered him a hand, in a much nicer way? Or did Gajeel refuse at first and then go back to Ivan saying he was also approached by Makarov and is now looking for the better deal? Or was Gajeel a FT member first? Did he go to RT with the offer to spy for them? Or did he go to RT trying to actually join them and then got asked by Ivan to spy on FT after some time?
Tumblr media
Question 4
This is related to Question 1. I understand that the Council would know that Raven Tail exists, given it's size and independent position besides the Baram Alliance. They would probably also know who the Master of Raven Tail is. And if they know that, then they also know the familial connection to Fairy Tail's master Makarov. IF THE COUNCIL KNOWS ALL THAT then how come that MAKAROV HAS NO FRIGGIN CLUE about what Ivan is doing and where he is?!?!
Yes, I am talking about BEFORE the 7-year gap happened. Naturally within that time period Raven Tail may have had a chance to grow substantially with only Tartaros against them and many other dark guilds falling apart and reorganising themselves (thanks to Crime Sorciere) but even before it existed for YEARS.
Anyway... certainly at the time of the Grand Magic Games, practically anyone who follows up on the world of magic and guilds, knows who Makarov is, knows who Ivan is, and knows who Fairy Tail and Raven Tail are. Easy.
Tumblr media
Question 5
The most important one!
Why is Ivan upset about finding out that he had been spied upon? And why is the final straw breaking his patience the remark about Makarov still loving/trusting his son?
Ok, I guess, finding out that one has not been so secret as one believed on was is depressing. xD And yeah, he can be pissed with himself for not noticing Gajeel wasn't sincere. And he can feel pissed about knowing his father is still his father, seemingly able to know everything he does.
But why exactly would knowing that his father trusts him (not to truly harm FT or sell the info about LH?) be something enraging? Does Ivan consider that a lie? Is it because Ivan saw and experienced enough in the past to come to the conclusion that Makarov does NOT trust him regardless of what is being said? Laxus comes here with "duh, blood family" and Ivan is quite "shut the fuck up about blood family, what do you even know".
I think this is Ivan's most interesting moment in canon, because it tells us most about himself. At least, if we were able to read it properly. xD I certainly can't. I am just confused as heck.

Rabbit & Bear Studios, a Tokyo-based studio formed by key creators of the Suikoden series, has announced Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, an ambitious new RPG planned for release in fall 2022. A Kickstarter campaign seeking $500,000 USD in funding for a PC release—with a single stretch goal to unlock PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Switch versions (or next-gen Switch, if one is available)—will run from July 27 at 9:00 a.m. PT / 12:00 p.m. ET to August 28. A trailer will also debut when the campaign launches.
Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is led by Suikoden I and II veteran scenario writer Yoshitaka Murayama, alongside series veterans Junko Kawano, Osamu Komuta, and Junichi Murakami. The project marks the first time these four creators have worked on a game together, as well as the first time Murayama and Kawano have collaborated in 25 years.
“The first thing we decided when our members came together was, ‘It’s about time we made a really interesting game that we ourselves want to make,'” project lead Murayama said in a press release. “We chose Kickstarter in order to make an interesting game with the players in mind, hold the rights to the planning, world, and story of the game, all while keeping the fun of the project. Please lend us your support in this new challenge of ours! We promise to create something that heeds the call of your voices.”
Speaking to Gematsu, Murayama shared more information on the game’s similarities to Suikoden and what elements of the series will carry over.
“Eiyuden Chronicle is about war, or more importantly, the intention and feelings of the 100 heroes who fight that war from a variety of perspectives and for a variety of different reasons,” Murayama told Gematsu. “And of course the drama that can only occur when a group of different people from different walks of life come together and must wage a war of life and death.”
Murayama continued, “And the many characters that participate in this war aren’t just pawns added in as ‘war fodder,’ they have a living breathing soul and begrudgingly must fight to protect the things they believe in. Additionally, there are non-combat specialists, researchers, and other ‘heroes’ on the periphery that can help win battles or lose them. Each and every one of them is a living breathing character that the player gives life to through their choices.”
Each character has their own strengths and weaknesses that can be leveraged to help the player form a balanced team.
“Some characters are good are some things and bad at others,” Murayama explained. “But if you combine them with other characters that can strengthen their weaknesses, you can end up with a really balanced team. And based on that delicate balance your team make be more apt at mining or adventuring which will affect the overall game progression loop. One of the core game loops in Eiyuden is to experience the wide variety of different characters and personalities in your 100 person army.
“With each new character your ‘fortress town’ grows in size and ability. It is a key system in the game. As you increase your teammates, some members will be blacksmiths, some chefs and whether on the battlefield or not, each character will play a role in strengthening your resolve as an army. There are guilds that you can join which will largely change the visual make-up of your fortress town and grant different abilities. The more people you recruit, the stronger the snowball effect. As you level up, new trade options appear along with enemies and thieves that randomly attack your town in an effort to impede your progress. You need to make choices whether to strengthen your walls or hasten your progress. Each choice will make every play session feel different and have its own consequences.”
According to Murayama, all of this is “just the tip of the iceberg,” meaning that fans can expect much more to come.
Here is an overview of the game, via Rabbit & Bear Studios:

■ Story
Welcome to the Continent of Allraan
“Our story begins in one corner of Allraan, a tapestry of nations with diverse cultures and values.
By dint of sword, and by way of magical objects known as “rune-lenses,” the land’s history has been shaped by the alliances and aggressions of the humans, beastmen, elves, and desert people who live there.
The Galdean Empire has edged out other nations and discovered a technology that amplifies the rune-lenses’ magic. Now, the Empire is scouring the continent for an artefact that will expand their power even further.
It is on one such expedition that Seign Kesling, a young and gifted imperial officer, and Nowa, a boy from a remote village, meet each other and become friends.
However, a twist of fate will soon drag them into the fires of war, and force them both to reexamine everything they believe to be right and true.”
■ Characters
Nowa (Default Name)
Sex: Male
Age: 17 years old
Home: A remote village in the League of Nations
Favorite Food: Anything with meat in it
“That’s who I am. A meddler. Always will be—just ask Leene. So don’t tell me to do nothing. I may not be able to help them, but I have to at least try.”
Tumblr media
When the League of Nations recruits warriors to assist in a joint expedition with the Galdean Empire, our protagonist answers the call and leaves his remote village to test his skills. On the mission, he finds an ancient rune-lens, unaware that the discovery will spark a war between the League and the Empire. After the conflict begins, he joins a unit in the League’s border guard.
The protagonist is the “leap before you look” type. He doesn’t always weigh the pros and cons before springing to action, and while his constant need to involve himself in other people’s problems sometimes creates headaches for his companions, they like him for it and know his heart is in the right place. After all, if they ever got into trouble, he’d be the first person there.
Seign Kesling
Sex: Male
Age: 18 years old
Home: A noble house in the Galdean Empire
Favorite Food: Poached eggs
“I can dream all I want, but it won’t change a thing. The world is not that kind. So if the only way to achieve my ideals is to betray them first, then I will do that—unflinchingly. You have my word.”
Tumblr media
The second-born son to House Kesling, a powerful imperial family. His older brother died on the battlefield. Seign is exceptionally gifted; after achieving outstanding grades at military academy, he was placed in command of a company of his peers and sent on the expedition to find the ancient rune-lens. During the mission, he meets the protagonist. The two warm to each other as they overcome adversity, and they learn of one another’s ambitions.
Seign’s strategic mind allows him to analyze things from a broad perspective and make sound decisions. People often confuse his clear mind for a cold heart, but he is guided by strong ideals and a deep passion to fulfill them.
After his brother’s death during a border rebellion, Seign began to think long and hard about what it means to fight.
Marisa
Sex: Female
Age: 16 years old
Profession: One of the Guardians who watches over the forest
Favorite Food: Herbed chicken
“You just leave the forest to me. I know where the water springs, where the rabbits burrow—and most importantly, where your enemies will try to hide.”
Tumblr media
A young member of the Guardians, a clan that hallows and protects the forest. Since Marisa was very little, her family has instilled their ways and traditions in her. She has a warm, affable smile—except on the battlefield, where she wears the countenance of a warrior.
Although the Guardians live as one with the forest, they have respect for the outside world’s culture and technology, and they are not against integrating the parts of it that make sense to them. Marisa is particularly forward-thinking in this regard, and loves new things—especially cute things.
Over the generations, the Guardians have developed a unique method of wielding the rune-lenses. For that reason, both the Empire and the protagonist try to win them over to their camp. Whom the Guardians choose will prove to be a major turning point in history.
Melridge
Sex: Male
Age: 27 years old
Profession: A scholar of natural history
Favorite Food: Duck soup
“You should lay down arms and surrender. That’s the quickest way to end this… No? Very well. Then I suppose I’ll provide you with the next best thing: a winning strategy.”
Tumblr media
A young scholar who specializes in natural history. He yearns to know of every last thing in the world, and exactly how it got there. He also happens to be a genius tactician, and will be a valuable asset to the protagonist.
That said, he views warfare as the most pointless of all human endeavors, and any personal contributions to it as a complete waste of time.
Garr
Sex: Male
Age: 32 years old
Profession: Warrior in a clan of mercenaries
Favorite Food: Pancakes slathered with whipped cream
“Only a soft-brained leader runs headlong into danger. Anyone who knows what’s good for him will tell you you’ve lost it, kid. But not me. If blaze-of-glory’s your thing, count me in. We all die in the end. Might as well make it interesting.”
Tumblr media
A veteran beastman warrior. He and his clan make their living as mercenaries, and their vast experience and sheer brutality put them in high demand. War is all Garr has known, and to him life is one battlefield after the other until you die.
When a conflict breaks out, every army wants as many beastmen as they can afford. Because mercenary contracts are made with individuals and not the entire clan, it is not uncommon for Garr and his fellow beastmen to face each other as enemies in the field.
Lian
Sex: Female
Age: 16 years old
Home: A martial arts dojo
Favorite Food: Super-spicy ramen
“Uhh, maybe I’m dumbing this down a little, but—like—if a bunch of arrogant swine strut into YOUR home and started acting like they owned the place, what would YOU do? ‘Cause there’s your answer.”
Tumblr media
After the Empire’s forces invade League lands, Lian is infuriated and runs away from home…without even the slightest semblance of a plan. She decides the first thing to do is hoof it to the biggest town she can find, and luckily that’s where she meets the protagonist and his companions.
Lian was born in a dojo, and her father wasted no time in teaching her. She was doing roundhouse kicks before she even learned to walk properly.
Mio
Sex: Female
Age: 27 years old
Home: The Far East
Favorite Food: Bamboo-wrapped sasa dumplings
“The road you walk is one, and yet its endpoints are myriad. You can still choose where the road takes you.”
Tumblr media
A swordswoman who is journeying to perfect the way of the blade. She has a stoic personality and rarely speaks, unless it’s to challenge someone she views as a worthy opponent.
When she does open her mouth to say something, it’s straight to the point and usually dripping with wisdom, so the people around her have taken to calling her “sensei.” However, even the greatest of senseis do have the occasional brain fart…

Turkish Police in Istanbul detained 57 people on Wednesday night who were protesting against the arrest of Sebnem Korur Fincanci, president of the Turkish Medical Association, TTB.
“It was told that the total number of detainees is 57. They were started to be sent to the police station in Vatan,” the Progressive Lawyers’ Association, CHD’s Istanbul branch wrote on Twitter.
An Ankara prosecutor’s office launched an investigation against Korur Fincanci over allegations of “making propaganda for a terrorist organization” and “insulting the Turkish nation, the state of the Republic of Turkey, state institutions and organs.”
This followed her remarks about claims about the military’s alleged use of chemical weapons against Kurdish militants in Iraq.
Korur Fincanci earlier said that independent delegations should carry out investigations in the region regarding these allegations.
Korur Fincanci’s house was stormed by police on Wednesday at dawn and the prosecutor’s office also demanded that she should be removed from her position at the TTB.
Her arrest came after she was targeted by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his far-right ally, Devlet Bahceli, leader of the Nationalist Movement Party, MHP.
Politicians, rights groups, bar associations and medical associations around the globe condemned the arrest and called for her immediate release.
“The detention process took place as a result of the pressure and intervention of political power on the judiciary, with its stigmatizing, discrediting and even criminalizing discourses for days,” the Human Rights Association, IHD, and Human Rights Foundation of Turkey, TIHV, said in a joint statement.
The Labour and Freedom Alliance, led by the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party, HDP, called for solidarity.
“Professor Korur Fincanci is not alone. Korur Fincanci should be released immediately! We stand by Korur Fincanci and the TTB. We call on all democratic public for speaking up and solidarity,” it wrote.
The arrest was also condemned by the World Medical Association, WMA, while Turkish doctors and local branches of the TTB organised several protests across Turkey.
“It is totally unacceptable that Dr Korur Fincancı has been detained and that members of the Turkish Medical Association are being threatened with suspension,” Dr Frank Ulrich Montgomery, Chair of the WMA Council, said on Wednesday.
The TTB and its leader, Korur Fincanci, have been targeted by President Erdogan and his ruling coalition in recent years, especially after the TTB’s criticism of the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Erdogan several times said the privileges of institutions that do not deserve to bear the name of Turkey or Turkish should be taken away.
The TTB is the main professional guild representing Turkish medical workers and regulates the standards of the medical profession and ethics.
Korur Fincanci is a globally renowned forensic science specialist who led Istanbul’s University’s forensic science department for many years. She spent most of her life in rights groups, focusing on torture, medical ethics and war crimes.
In 1996, on behalf of the United Nations, she participated in autopsy studies of corpses excavated from mass graves in the Kalesija region of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Somebody's Guide to Whatever This Place Is
Back in September of 2020, on the final day of the D&D Celebration online event, Ray Winninger, the then-newly-installed Executive Producer of D&D announced that three new campaign settings would be introduced into Fifth Edition D&D in 2021. Speculation over which 'classic' settings would be chosen was rampant, and nearly every old setting had folks who were willing to either predict that setting or at least express a desire for that setting to be one of the settings updated for 2021. (The article linked above suggested that Dark Sun, Spelljammer, and Greyhawk would be good choices, but again, this was more 'these are the settings I'd like to see' then 'these are the settings that are most likely to occur'.)
In the six months that have passed since then, we've gotten confirmation on two of those three settings. The first is Dragonlance, in the aftermath of the lawsuit brought by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman related to a new Dragonlance trilogy that was, in theory, going to be pocket veto-ed by WotC, but is now back on schedule to be published later this year.
The second was revealed in a recent product announcement: in May of 2021, a new setting book, Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft, will be released. Few predicted Ravenloft would be one of the two settings Winninger referred to, as WotC had already released Curse of Strahd, a hard-cover re-imagining of the classic I6 Ravenloft module from AD&D days updated for Fifth Edition, and had at the same time allowed folks to update other parts of the Ravenloft setting to Fifth Edition via the DMs Guild. Now that the announcement is official, I'm filled with trepidation as to what WotC is going to do with the full campaign setting.
There are a number of things WotC could do with the setting that would make me at least appreciate if not love the new version of the setting, but I'm not holding out a great deal of hope that these things will actually happen. Nevertheless, I thought I'd note some of those things here as a preliminary 'wish list' of things that would make me happy about the re-imagined 5E Ravenloft, and more importantly, why.
Break up 'the Core' into Islands of Terror
Curiously, this is something we already know will actually happen in the 5E Ravenloft setting, thanks to information included as part of the announcement. Nevertheless, it's a change that has a number of more traditional Ravenloft fans upset.
"The Core" is a group of domains physically connected into a single giant land mass which can be navigated as any other continent on a campaign world might be, either via road, river, or what-have-you. Those who argue that the Core should remain do so under the presumption that, if you plan to use Ravenloft as a campaign setting, you need a way to migrate from one domain to another. There are some domains that aren't part of the Core, either in 'clusters' (smaller groups of related domains 'clustered' together into geographic units like the Amber Wastes or the Verdurous Lands, or as isolated 'islands of terror'. Since these other domains are separated from the Core by the Mists, they are at least in theory harder to get to; there are a few 'Mistways' which can be used to travel from one domain to a cluster or island or vice versa, but those Mistways are by their nature unreliable, resulting in anything from a small to an almost certain chance of not actually ending up where you intend to go. Meanwhile, simply marching down the Old Svalich Road from Barovia will ultimately and unerringly get you to the next domain along the road, unless Strahd chooses to close the borders of his domain, preventing your escape.
So why am I in favor of this change? Because it makes sense given the existing campaign canon. The last books to be published that actually defined and/or expanded the Ravenloft setting were published under license by Swords and Sorcery Studios back during Third Edition, specifically a series of Gazetteers with the conceit that they were written by a mysterious chronicler called 'S' at the behest of the lord of Darkon, Azalin Rex. Included in that chronicle was evidence that the lord of Falkovnia, one Vlad Drakov, had tired of being continually defeated in his attempts to conquer his domain neighbors (this is, in fact, part of Drakov's punishment as a darklord, that his military, supreme within his own domain, is powerless to project his authority outside it) and allied himself with the new Dukkar and de facto ruler of Invidia, Malocchio Aderre, to invade their mutual neighbor Borca. Whether this is simply accidental genius on Drakov's part, or whether he had puzzled out some aspect of his punishment and decided that an alliance with a power that wasn't subject to his personal curse might serve as a way around that curse wasn't made clear, but the underlying assumption was that given the relative military power of the domains in question, unless Borca's allies in the 'Treaty of Four Towers' came to its defense, Borca would not be able to survive the combined forces of both Falkovnia and Invidia and would fall. More to the point, nothing would prevent Malocchio, who is not a darklord, from entering Borca and removing that domain's darklord (or more accurately, twin darklords). The simplest way for the Dark Powers to enforce Drakov's curse and ensure that his mutual invasion with the Dukkar doesn't succeed, or at least results in such a huge cost that the victory likely won't be worth the price, is for the Dark Powers to close the borders around both Falkovnia and Borca; doing so would turn every passage from Falkovnia or Invidia into Borca into a Mistway, and even such a Mistway with 'excellent reliability' would cause the invading forces to be decimated -- 10% of all the creatures passing through the Misty Border would be re-directed to other locations and would thus be extremely unlikely to be able to contribute to the war effort. For an adventuring party, this is irritating, but for an army, where each different member of a unit is part of a larger structure, randomly removing 1 in 10 members of that army results in organizational chaos and disaster. Add in that communications between the army in Borca and its headquarters in Falkovnia also are now subject to the potential for Mist-led misdirection, and that Drakov, as a darklord himself, is unable to pass over the Misty Border at all, and Drakov's curse seems fairly easily enforced as a result.
But if the Dark Powers are going to isolate Falkovnia and Invidia, why not take the obvious next step and simply isolate every domain in the Core from every other domain? It only makes sense.
There is another reason why such a change makes sense, but it's more properly discussed as part of a larger idea:
Tie the changes to the Time of Unparalleled Darkness
Changes in D&D editions have often resulted in changes to D&D's associated campaign settings. The best example of this is actually the Forgotten Realms. When D&D moved from 1st to 2nd edition, the changes in the rules necessitated by this change were propagated to the Realms as part of a Realms-wide event, known as the Time of Troubles (or the Avatar Crisis), where the deities of the Realms were kicked out of their divine realms by the Overgod Ao and forced to dwell on Faerun in mortal forms. Some deities survived, while others didn't, which helped explain the changes in the world resulting from the changes in the D&D rules (the removal of assassins as a class option was justified by the death of the god of assassins during this time, for example). Similarly, when Third Edition was replaced by Fourth Edition D&D, the Realms was subjected to the Sundering, a worldwide disaster that unravelled the Weave, significantly modified the world's geography, and even posited a land swap between Toril and its twin sister world Abeir to explain the sudden appearance of dragonborn, which went from being an optional splatbook race in Third Edition to a core racial option in Fourth. (Nearly all of these changes were undone as part of the move from Fourth Edition to Fifth, but the Sundering still canonically happened in the Realms, continuing to support the changes in the setting that still needed to be justified by rules changes).
A similar thing occurred in Ravenloft, referred to alternately as the Grand Conjunction or the Great Upheaval (and referred to in even different ways in specific domains, such as in Sri Rajj, where it is called the "Rebirth of Kali"), and resulted in a reshuffling of the Core's domains, with some Islands of Terror becoming parts of the Core (Dominia), some parts of the Core becoming Islands of Terror (Bluetspur, G'Henna), some parts of the core being relocated (such as Markovia moving from a landlocked Core domain to an island in the Nocturnal Sea), and some domains being absorbed into other domains (Arak being absorbed into Darkon, Arkandale being absorbed into Verbrek, Dorvinia being merged into Borca, and Gundarak being split between Invidia and Barovia). PCs had the opportunity to participate in the lead-up to this event through a series of six adventures that represented the six parts of Hyskosa's Hexad, a prophecy from a past Dukkar that presaged massive change and destruction in Ravenloft. So in a sense, simply turning all of the Core's domains into Islands of Terror wouldn't necessarily be the most drastic change that's ever been made to the campaign's setting, but the past changes were at least tied to an in-game event that is both known and is significant to the domain's residents.
The Time of Unparalleled Darkness, another prophecy, though this one not from a Vistani seer but from a priest of the goddess of the Mists, already exists in Ravenloft as a future peril (at least it was in the future as of the current date of the setting while it was in the hands of Swords & Sorcery Studios); tying the 5E campaign changes to the Time of Unparalleled Darkness, and simultaneously advancing the campaign timeline past 775 BC (Barovian Calendar), the predicted year of the Time of Unparalleled Darkness, would further cement the event as part of existing Ravenloft lore, rather than making the changes seem arbitrary. This isn't to say that part 1 above (the breakup of the Core into Islands of Terror) has to be contemporaneous with the Time of Unparalleled Darkness -- in fact, a pretty good series of adventures, not unlike the Hyskosa's Hexad adventures, could likely be written as a prelude to the Time of Unparalleled Darkness, with the rising of the Mists occurring in an early adventure as part of the PCs' investigation into the joint Falkovnian/Invidian invasion of Borca and culminating in the event that results in more signficant changes to the domain.
De-emphasize the role of darklords in the setting
In reading about other folks' opinions on the upcoming Ravenloft book, it's a bit surprising to me how many of them are convinced that the 'point' of Ravenloft as a setting is to throw your PCs against the machinations and the will of the setting's various darklords, and I'll admit that Curse of Strahd, looked at simplistically, doesn't seem to go against this premise. Though much of what the PCs do in Curse of Strahd is only peripherally related to Strahd himself, the PCs can't actually leave Barovia without venturing into Castle Ravenloft and 'defeating' Strahd, which opens the way for them to escape. Because of this, a lot of folks who seem to be opposed to the idea of breaking up the Core seem to be basing their opposition on the idea that it would thus be harder for PCs to 'piss off' a darklord and then escape into a neighboring domain, where that darklord holds no sway. (This seems to ignore that most darklords of the Core have the power to close the borders of their domains, thus forcing irritating PCs to 'stay put' and receive their punishment for defying the darklord's wishes, but whatever.)
I happen to think that this is a fundamental misrepresentation of the role of the darklords in the Ravenloft setting, akin to someone believing that a Call of Cthulhu adventure isn't complete until and unless the characters have come face-to-face with one of the Great Old Ones, from which the adventure takes its flavor and inspiration.
To continue the comparison with Call of Cthulhu, the main conceit of that game is that the Great Old Ones are above humanity; so far so that not only can humanity not deal with the very existence of the Great Old Ones (any human who directly encounters one has their sanity shattered as a result), but that humanity is but a tiny speck against the long-term plans and goals of the Great Old Ones. The Great Old Ones don't hunt down and destroy those who defy them; at best, a Great Old One might wave away such irritations as we would wave at a gnat, but the real 'hunting', if it occurs at all, occurs by the cult (or cults) devoted to the Great Old One who take umbrage at their own part of the grand design being thwarted (even though, again, from the perspective of the Great Old One, it doesn't matter which of their irrelevant minions brings about their will, because they know their designs will ultimately come to fruition regardless). The role of PCs in Call of Cthulhu is not to destroy or even defeat a Great Old One, but to defeat a plan set in motion by the more mundane servants of a Great Old One, thus pushing doomsday off for another time, and for a later group of investigators to discover and (hopefully) thwart again.
This isn't to say that Ravenloft has to become the same game as Call of Cthulhu; most of the darklords in pre-5e Ravenloft were once mortal, so their motivations are not nearly as odd and inscrutable as the alien thought processes of the entities in the worlds of HP Lovecraft: the evils in a Gothic horror story are much more understandable and comprehensible than the evils of a cosmic horror story. I'd even argue that the classics of Gothic horror, on which a number of Ravenloft domains are based, are more akin to classical tragedies -- for example, the hubris of Victor Frankenstein in striving to create life causes him to build a monster and almost create a race of such monsters, and it costs him his own family. Victor Mordenheim's hubris is similar, and creates a similar, though slightly different tragedy. In this sense, one could create a Ravenloft domain based on the story of Oedipus and it would fit right in with the other tragic darklords of the setting. This kind of tragedy has a very different feel than the cosmic horror of Call of Cthulhu, and should feel different, though neither strictly fits within the existing structure of how stories are told in D&D.
The other thing that de-emphasizing darklords allows is for the focus of adventures to be put back onto those who fight the monsters rather than the monsters themselves. It's not coincidental or a surprise that the height of the setting's popularity was coupled with the most popular and well-known character unique to the setting (rather than either of the D&D adventures that preceded it): Dr. Rudolph Van Richten. Van Richten is rightly known for being a monster-hunter, yet never once does Van Richten defeat or even directly oppose a darklord; the only two times Van Richten (in pre-5e material) interacts with a darklord are once very early in his career, when the lich-king Azalin Rex helps Van Richten take his revenge on the Radanovich clan of Vistani for kidnapping his son Erasmus, who is turned into a vampire by Baron Metis, and later when Van Richten's stealthy intrusion into Castle Ravenloft while Strahd "sleeps" serves as the framing device for the self-serving version of Strahd's history related in "I, Strahd" to leak out into the Realms of Dread. Van Richten doesn't even defeat every enemy he comes across: for example, the fiend Drigor, whose serial possession of the Mandrigore family is responsible for the series of books known as The Mandrigorian, notably destroys all of Van Richten's adventuring companions, but leaves the Great Doctor himself alive to pass along the tale (as well as live with the error -- assuming that Drigor, the author of a centuries-long series of texts related to fiends and their relationship with the Lands of Mists, was lawful rather than chaotic -- that directly led to their deaths). Gothic heroes, after all, are frequently just as tragic if not more so than the villains they do battle with, and if they fail, as they sometimes do in such stories, it's that tragic flaw that is frequently the cause of their failure.
And as long as we're discussing Van Richten's tragic flaw...
Bring the setting's treatment of the Vistani more closely in line with their portrayal in Van Richten's Guide to the Vistani
When Chris Perkins set down to write his 'blood-soaked love letter to the Hickmans' that was Curse of Strahd, he largely left the Vistani as depicted by Tracy Hickman in that classic D&D module. This, understandably, was not considered a good move, as Hickman didn't even refer to the Vistani as the Vistani in that classic module -- they were 'gypsies' and served Strahd in an odd and inimical way which left them as representing many long-time stereotypes and prejudices of the actual Romani people. The reaction against that portrayal was one of a number of factors leading to last year's WotC announcement on Diversity and Dungeons & Dragons, and that WotC would be "working with a Romani consultant" to refocus their depiction of the Vistani to avoid these harmful and stereotypical assumptions. While the mention of the Romani consultant certainly helps them make their case that they are taking this task seriously when it comes to the Vistani, WotC already owns a much more nuanced view of the Vistani, if only they choose to make use of it.
To go back a moment to our previous item, Van Richten's tragic flaw is his sense of the rightness of his own actions, a tragic flaw that nevertheless doesn't expose itself until very late in the Great Doctor's career, when he finally comes to understand that his very first act as a monster-hunter, destroying the Radanoviches who were involved in kidnapping his son, caused him to be the target of a deadly Vistani curse. The twist is that the curse is not deadly to Van Richten himself, but to those who stand with him and whom he comes to care about, and it contributes to their destruction while leaving Van Richten himself alive to continue to spread woe just as he also brings hope. (See above for the tale of Van Richten versus Drigor both for another example of Van Richten's flaw as well as the operation of the curse.)
The story of how Van Richten comes to realize he is laboring under a Vistani curse, how he unwittingly cast a curse upon the Radanoviches as well, and how he and a Vistani whom he comes to know and befriend work to overcome their mutual curses forms the framing device for "Van Richten's Guide to the Vistani", written by David Wise, published by TSR in 1995, and inherited by WotC when they purchased TSR in 1998. Van Richten's Guide to the Vistani is one of my favorite game supplements of all time, for any game, and deserves to be remembered as more than just the supplement that provided rules to allow players to make full Vistani characters. The main reason why this supplement works so well (at least for me) is that the supplement humanizes the Vistani by having Van Richten travel with his new Vistani friend and living with different groups of Vistani, learning about them and the strange and wonderful (and terrible) things they can do.
No one doubts that there can be evil Vistani, just as there can be evil orcs, drow, and humans. The issue that some inelegantly fear will happen, though, is that rather than being portrayed as a complex culture of different views and perspectives, the Vistani will be 'Tolkienized' in much the same way as elves were within AD&D, made into a race that is strictly better than human in nearly every way. I don't believe that this is what is going to happen to the Vistani, however; if only because the old-school 'elves are awesome' perspective has already been unwound by the current design team in many ways (for example, by removing the racial-specific requirement to be a bladesinger). My concern is that the Vistani will become just another 'hat' that a PC can put on to look different than the default without actually having to be different from the default.
My biggest piece of evidence in favor of this approach is not the removal of culturally-specific items from each D&D 'race' (like bladesingers, which traditionally were elves, now coming from any race), but an argument made by a former administrator in the D&D Adventurer's League during the season in which Curse of Strahd was the feature hardcover, and in which all the associated AL adventures took place in the domain of Barovia. The first adventure in the series took place in the Forgotten Realms (the default setting for AL at the time), and described a family of wanderers from Barovia who physically resembled Faerun's version of a Romani-type culture: the Gur. It would make sense that typical residents of the Realms, unfamiliar with Ravenloft and their Vistani, would refer to this family as a curious tribe of Gur, since that's the thing they know. But this admin took the comparison a very large step farther, positing that every Romani-like or Traveler-like culture in any D&D campaign world was actually that world's version of the Vistani; in effect, positing the Vistani as a planar culture that simply goes by different names on different worlds. While this might be an interesting idea to posit with a new race of beings in D&D, my problem with this theory is that the Vistani are so closely tied to Ravenloft and iconic to that setting, that simply declaring that the Gur are 'Faerun's Vistani' is just as reductive and stereotypical as saying that the Gur are 'Faerun's Romani'. You're not solving the problem of problematic representation by claiming that every iteration of a real-world culture in fantasy is actually a copy-paste of a single view of that culture; if anything you're reinforcing the idea that any negative view of that culture in any setting is justified in all settings, simply due to the equating of that culture in one D&D world with the same culture on any other D&D world.
So the Vistani should remain unique to Ravenloft, in my view, and while a Romani consultant can certainly help with tweaking the portrayal of Vistani characters and the Vistani culture to be less overtly problematic, I don't see how it helps the Vistani retain their unique character that has helped them become such a well-known part of the Ravenloft campaign setting. More than just about every other work in D&D history, "Van Richten's Guide to the Vistani" actually does this, presenting the Vistani as a unique culture with its own drives, values, and heroes, while showing that the Vistani culture does not always agree with the 'default' cultures presented in other parts of the setting.
Perhaps I'll be pleasantly surprised on this topic, and the same designers who ultimately figured out that the alignment rules as presented in the Fifth Edition Players Handbook suggested that sexism was bad, but racism was surprisingly OK and decided to do something about it will take a similarly nuanced approach toward the Vistani in their new Ravenloft setting book. Unfortunately, I think a much more likely approach will be to do exactly what that AL admin thought was such a great idea; since they'll have gone to all the trouble to finally make 'good gypsies' for Ravenloft, they'll save themselves a lot of potential work by simply declaring that every Vistani-like culture in any other D&D setting is just the Vistani by another name, thus making every Romani-like or Traveler-like culture in D&D into the 'good gypsies' by default, erasing any question of cultural complexity or questionable flavor in the hope of being more palatable to a mainstream audience that wants to believe that their new Vistani character is just as good as the default, but doesn't want to be bothered to learn why.

𝚜𝚊𝚗𝚌𝚝𝚊 𝚜𝚊𝚗𝚌𝚝𝚘𝚛𝚞𝚖: 𝚎𝚡𝚘𝚛𝚌𝚒𝚜𝚝 𝚟𝚎𝚛𝚜𝚎
Tumblr media
THE THEMES: corrupted holier than thou guilds / world orders that are way too sketchy and crave eternal war / vampire secret societies and adjacent politics / ouroboros of greed and pride / who’s the real monster ? / the power of blood.
CONTENT WARNINGS: mentions of child grooming / mental & emotional abuse and indoctrination, wars and politics ( it’s vampire politics, but you never know ), discrimination of both supernatural creatures by humans / humans by supernatural creatures, demonization and dehumanization, death and mercy kills, manipulation and mind games.
as always please do not steal anything / take inspiration from here, any mention of other IDV characters is just purely casual and there’s no obligation to abide to every word i say, i’m just a writer who rambles a lot ;;
𝚊𝚋𝚘𝚞𝚝 𝚊𝚎𝚜𝚘𝚙: a forsaken youth whose blood traces ancient priests and aristocrats just like his whole being is painted in grays and whites and reds, whose honorable father disappeared under mysterious circumstances when he was too young to remember and whose lovely mother’s health was so quickly deteriorating because of a mysterious abyssal disease ━he ended up leaving his home in order to live with the old family friend and trusted figure of jerry carl, as lastly wished by aesop’s mother herself before passing away. the known veteran, member of the most influential guild of supernatural hunters of the Allegiance of Countries known as The Order, raised the child himself by imbuing the guild’s creed and his own hatred towards supernatural creatures, for he had seen the great potential that laid within the pale child ━especially when it came to both his rare blood and his affinity with the supernatural as aesop has always shown as a child the ability to see spirits and perceive the presence of supernatural creatures as clearly as he could so easily admire the traces of stars on a night sky, things most hunters and humans can't do and that of course try to compensate for with their techniques. memories of his past prior leaving with jerry are hazy at best, but all that remained as vivid as ever was his mother’s tired smile ━and the harp demanded to come with him in the new place he was supposed to call home. as he bloomed into adulthood, he became a model of what a diligent exorcist had always been supposed to be: a living weapon for The Order to take pride of and use, a terror for creatures haunting and decimating humanity to fear, developing his blood bait at a spectacularly young age and successfully adapt it to his own natural gifts ━and when jerry died ( by aesop’s hands himself who so heartlessly shot the agonizing mentor who nighly was turning into a rabid ghoul ), aesop simply took over the mentor's duties and position as The Order’s mortician much to the higher planes’ glee. but perhaps it was indeed because of jerry not being around anymore to manipulate his deadly creation and the curiosity he harbored deep within the indoctrinated diligence ━or perhaps it was because of said deadly creation showing signs of hesitation and true mercy when sparing a rogue vampire he was supposed to eradicate from its hideout not that far from one of the province’s towns━ the pale exorcist had started  to realize that some things didn’t add up, that some things he’s never questioned just because he grew up in it and knew nothing more about than an eerie sensation hitting him down his spine every now and then had actually some gruesome, macabre obscenities in its womb.
𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚘𝚛𝚍𝚎𝚛 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚋𝚕𝚘𝚘𝚍 𝚋𝚊𝚒𝚝𝚜:   not much is really known about its birth, a history as clouded by fog as the birth of the world and the first great wars in the eternal darkness ━considered the greatest armed force within the Allegiance of Countries, The Order is involved deeply in the politics and matters of those states requiring their presence, judgement and interventions. its structure as well is a mystery, with orders impossible to defy coming from the high council manifesting only in so - called times of need, and the serious to everyday matters under the strict control of the high summoners and the very running strength of The Order: the exorcists ━often presenting themselves solo or in groups of two / three members, with each one specializing in several arts from contact to more intellect - focused studies and often ending up with one becoming their main field alongside their signature blood baits. blood baits are the most known technique every adept of The Order needs to learn to access to if they want to be able to be considered full part of The Order, created by the blood of the exorcist imbued in special items which then create a symbiotic bond with the exorcist meant to last until the exorcist passes away ━or at least as long as every month exorcists will respect the requirement of participating to blood donations which is said to be the only way to renew the bond with the blood bait and to create to create supplementary hunger baits for creatures like vampires, ghouls,  wendigos / skinwalkers, werewolves, demons of various kinds ( any creature that feeds on blood or flesh, pretty much ) ; it takes several years for a blood bait to start to develop and a great number of standard exorcists never truly manage to reach its fullest potential, and each blood bait is different from one another and cannot be passed on from exorcist to another. aesop’s blood bait, ‘ embalm ’, is contained in the mortician cosmetic box the exorcist is seen always carrying along, and when opened it takes the shape of an elaborate coffin. the casket itself is able to summon a lifelike replica of himself or someone else he’s able to replicate, powered by his own blood and consequently maneuverable by him like a life sized puppet.
𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚞𝚗𝚍𝚎𝚛𝚕𝚢𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚌𝚘𝚛𝚛𝚞𝚙𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚛𝚜𝚝 𝚘𝚏 𝚙𝚘𝚠𝚎𝚛: no self righteous claim is ever backed by equally pure true intentions, and The Order is no exception ━as their extremism has been known to know no ends just like their pride and greed, their desire to acquire more power and more riches causing them to indeed thread with the very creatures they claim of despising and creating the most complex and extensive blood trafficking ring that still to this day has never been truly caught or dismantled. they claim it’s in order to infiltrate and create ways to mine the greatest menace from the inside, but greed and hunger for more and more just roars louder within the darkest abysses. truth be told, so much of the ancient beliefs of The Order has been tressed in lies at some point in the darkest centuries and only those at the very top are well aware of it ━of how the blood baits do not need to be ‘ renewed ’ every month, of how blood in the supplementary hunger baits either comes from some unfortunate corpse or animals and all that blood taken away from the loyal and blinded exorcists gets actually sold to the great holders of the status quo known as the vampire aristocracy who so much want to hold their eons - old power just as much as their enemy and ‘ partners ’ want to steal it all from them ; they’re blueblood, old money after all ( the Bloodline above them all ), indifferent if not unbothered by the lower folk and creatures whose diatribes and feral rages act as more of a nuisance they’d like to get rid of before anything too out of hand can ever hope to happen. and in that, The Order’s strict beliefs just come quite handy ━especially considering the infighting between factions within the great clans of blood and how each clan dares using The Order to ' take care ' of dissidents that might menace the thin ice between two great forces, creating and manipulating several situations in order to trigger their intervention. and some members of the order itself ━or rather, those who are well suspicious but aren't aware of how things run deep in the highest spheres nor speak━ do not really hold any sympathy nor desire to be seen as the vampires' attack dog , for them it's just a temporary alliance given by the blood trafficking ring bc this way they get information about the enemy and ways to fully plot a mass extermination, usually dissidents in the order just ' disappear mysteriously '. it kinda works like a cold war born from an even ancient war leaving no trust between one another and ruination at each step in an equilibrium that truly doesn’t exist and is as much of a lie as everything else, with these subtle jabs at one another in higher spheres being covered by the loudness of both the hungerous creatures inhabiting the land and the facade of fanaticism of The Order ; both sides are driven by their own most selfish and most obscure desire and cravings that only seem to be amplified dangerously the more time passes, both sides want nothing but their status quo to reign and be maintained for their own interests to keep being fulfilled forevermore: The Order wanting for the extermination of all supernatural ‘ for the sake of humanity’s safety ’, the power and the riches ━and the Bloodline ( among other so - called allies ) to stay ontop of the social and power ladder and have endless pools of blood for them to feast on while all of the world would crash and burn in a new apocalypse allowing them to rewrite everything as their image and ideal. ( but maybe there’s more, creatures of lingering abyss playing chess with the living in their most maddening boredom, hiding underneath dormant churches ━who knew. )

RP HOOKS ––– –
-The Few The Proud: Alexa has spent most of her life within the structure of the military, your character might know her if they are a Veteran of the Wrathgate, participated in Operation Shieldwall, or invaded the Broken Shore. She has recently returned from supplying the invasion efforts in Nazjatar.  -Sea-Faring: Due to heritage and profession alike, the Admiral has spent a decent amount of time upon the open-waters. In such she is well traveled, and often meets many interesting and diverse people while on land. She’s often spotted in taverns, acquainting herself with the locals and sharing stories. -Server of Justice: Someone has to do it, right? And Alexa brings down her wrath upon the corrupted with gusto. Pirates, Undead, the Horde, she is eagerly combative with anyone who dares defy the status quo or her direct orders.  -Nobility: The Imortis family is known to partake in the games that nobility play, though the upper echelons of society are of no interest to Alexa. One could readily know her from her younger years in Upton, but admittance of this particular sway of power is not often readily discussed.  -Tavern Terror: Rarely, if at all, will she be caught without a drink in her hand while on leave. If she is not glued to the bar and drinking away her sorrows, you can find her in the back playing darts competitively.
WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR –––
-All types of RP:  Action, adventure, slice of life, drama, long term, short term, pre-planned, spontaneous, whatever your heart desires. I have no issue with Alexa being the hero or enemy in your adventure, or even an innocent bystander (she’ll still have thoughts and opinions). I also enjoy cross-faction RP and conflict, and am open to discussion and plots alike. -Military: For obvious reasons Alexa fits well into this particular trope, especially with her current profession and interests.
-Connections: I’m looking for RP here on tumblr, discord, and in game (both on Moon Guard and Wrymrest Accord). If you know of a guild on Alliance on MG that you think could be a great fit, let me know.
