My brackish 40 gal!! Around 1.005 salinity and stocked with 3 fancy guppies, 1 Atlantic mudskipper + 1 figure 8 puffer
Only one of the three mangroves is still alive but I might get more and maybe add some Samolus valerandi or microsword or smth else but I have all my fish!! The mangrove is potted in fluval stratum in net pots
The bones (besides the skull which is store bought) are made of Sculpey and the driftwood is just sticks I baked in the oven and glued back together. The lid is polycarbonate cut to shape (with holes for trees) and there’s another piece in the filter so it’s not too loud!! Light is just a grow light for normal plants

Here’s what it looked like right after I set it up

I have a new to me 550 gallon tank (120x36x30) that I'd like to set up as a brackish community with mangrove. If you had this gigantic tank, how would you stock it? Only thing I'm 100% dead set on is a dragon goby. If I have the water depth 24", is that too deep for mudskippers if there's lots of roots/wood for them to get up on? Monos, scats, archers, and puffers seem to be the most commonly recommended, but I dont know who can live happily with who. All recommendations welcome!
Mama Mia that's a big ol tank! Let's see if I can answer your questions/statements in order...
I love Dragon Gobies and kept one for many years myself. They are lovely and peaceful with other fish - and though territorial, in this size tank with many possible locations for caves, you can keep a few without issue. Worth considering!
Mudskippers are fun but the issue with them is they are skittish. They are prey animals and they know it. If there's a big old fish in the water, even if harmless, they won't go in the water much. I'd probably skip then.
Puffers are also fun, but the issue is that most puffers will nip at sedentary fish like Drsgon Gobies. I say most because they are smart fish with distinct personalities; I have maybe the most peaceful GSP out there, who lives in a tank with snails and hermits and never once attacked then. But it's a risk I don't recommend.
Scats, Monos, and Archers will work here. You want to make a tank that LOOKS brackish? These are your guys. I do absolutely love Scats, and recommend Silver Scats if you can find them, but prepare for a fish that lives 15 to 20 years :)
As for other suggestions, I have three:
What I personally would be most tempted to try is a native brackish biotope. Dragon Gobies live up the US coast from NC down to the Gulf of Mexico - and we have so many awesome brackish fishes. Lined Killifish, Silversides, Sleeper Gobies, Needlefish, Mollies, Sunfish, Soles, and some of the introduced Cichlids are just a small taste of our many brackish options. You'd have to collect most of these yourself, though, limiting you somewhat.
I might be tempted to try Chromides here. Cichlids of the genus Eutroplus, the 2 brackish species are the chunky Green Chromides (that get up to 14 inches) and the tiny Orange Chromides (that get around 2-3). Sounds like a bad match right? In the wild, the two live together swimmingly, with the oranges acting as cleaner fish for the greens. Such a cool tank concept!
At your low end here (1.003 to 1.005) there are a few schooling rainbowfish that would work fine. I know it might feel like a waste of a big tank to keep mostly 3 to 4 inch long fish, but if you've ever seen a tank with 50 or 80 Boesemans Rainbows, you'll know it's a legitimate choice. Mix in some Australian and McCulloch's Rainbows and you've got a nifty tank!
My blog has caresheets for basically any brackish fish you are likely to find in the trade commonly or uncommonly. Take a browse and if you have any questions, let me know!

Today is the story of a guy with more heart than sense sometimes :p went to Petco today after running errands because... well, no reason I just wanted to see what they had in stock. I picked out some Nerites for my saltwater tank and saw this F8 puffer swimming in the fully marine section.
As the specialist was helping with the snails, I asked about him. She said they had him in freshwater for a while but he was declining and then has been in saltwater for about 2 weeks. Obviously he is better but F8s can't survive that indefinitely. So. I have a 29 gallon tank with only brackish tolerant fish and plants... so decided to get him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Skinny little guy... placement in the tank is for pictures only, he's currently in an aerated bucket doing a drip acclimation (currently down to 1.015, dripping paused for the night). Hoping he'll be ready for 1.003 to 1.005 in the next day or two.
Haven't selected a name yet - might let the wife name him, but I'm leaning towards "Cinnamon Stick" for whatever reason.

Any place to find a good GDI of SA1 1.005 (US) along with the 1ST_READ bin file and all 3 track files?
1.005? That's the US version with the animated title screen, it's more common than the other, so it should be pretty easy to get. Just use GDI Explorer to extract the tracks.

This is insane but my fish tank has a duckweed problem. It's acclimated to a specific gravity of up to 1.005 so. If anyone wants some duckweed for their lightly salted freshwater aquarium dm me.

Dear do you happen to know how popular Frobin in Japan alone? Is it the top ship for both Franky and Robin? P.S. The Frobin fandom are the kindest and most respectful of every ship in One piece that I had the pleasure of interacting with. The others are so toxic. It’s insane. Lots of love here to. ❤️
Hey there anon,
sorry for the late response and also I'm sorry to tell you that I have no idea how popular FRobin is in japan. Google couldn't answer me the question so I decided to look for a source... pixiv. Though nowadays there are also fanarts of western fans and not only japanese artists
There are 589 fanarts and illustrations for FRobin on pixiv.
Compared to that there are 11.451 of Zoro/Sanji
1.005 works in Law/Luffy
2.293 in Luffy/Nami
Let's look at some other ships that might be more comparable.
385 for Law/Robin
1.182 in Zoro/Robin
I couldn't find anything in Robin/Jinbe
77 in Iceburg/Franky
I can't find any other resources but FRobin still seems to be in the lower popularity ranks.
There is also this video that was recently shared on twitter:
youtube
I just want to say, we don't know where exactly the numbers come from, apparently it's google searches and maybe international? There is no table and no real resources.
In the last two years, even with the surge in fans, we were right pushed off the top 12.
And I want to mention that in August 2020 we had both, Franky inviting Robin for the ride and the colourspread with Robin touching Franky's face.
I'm sorry I can't give you any more information, anon :(
---
Also I don't advice anyone to go over to pixiv and look at either Namis or Robins tag. Holy fuck. Glad I already had my coffee <_<;

I decided to add amano shrimp to my 1.003 SG brackish tank after reading your posts on them. I have had them for two months, and they seem to be doing well. I recently got some flac for this on a forum with claims that amano shrimp are freshwater and don't have the right physiology to osmoregulate in brackish water. I was given the analogy that a goldfish might survive in a 1g bowl, but it's still bad husbandry. What are your thoughts and experiences with keeping amano shrimp in brackish tanks?
Well I really wish I knew much about shrimp biology - I know less about it than I do fish biology (which is admittedly limited. I am a hobbyist who enjoys learning about fish and has done a LOT of research, but still just a hobbyist). That said, Neale Monks literally wrote THE definitive book on brackish water fish tanks and cleared the Amano as safe for long term keeping in as much as 1.005. If anybody judges you for this decision, you can quote "Brackish-Water Fishes" as justification and ask them what professional source from a reputable source can definitively state they cannot tolerate this low level of salinity.

'The' African freshwater pipe
Usually traded as the African freshwater pipefish, or simply as freshwater pipefish, although there are certainly other pipefishes that fit this description, Enneacampus ansorgii was historically the commonest freshwater purplish offered in British aquarium retailers tanks. Sadly, these fish tended not to last long after their importation. Misinformation about this 14 centimeter or approaching 6 inch species was rife, and it still is. Detailed information on this species in the wild, is still something difficult to come by.
Pipefishes are the members of a clade named Syngnathidae, which is, in turn, allied to shrimpfishes and trumpetfishes that are occasionally seen in marine aquaria, among still others, such as cornetfishes and sea moths. Although many sources refer to the syngnathids as, "seahorses and pipefishes", implying a deep distinction, this is a false impression. Seahorses and sea dragons are in fact specialised pipefishes, maintaining the basic pipefish life history, feeding behavior, and anatomy.
Seahorses and their camouflaged sea dragon relatives, are derived and well nested pipefishes, and some typical pipefishes are more related to them, than to other typical pipefishes. Thus, the African Enneacampus pipefishes are more closely related to seahorses, than to some other pipefishes, such as the flagtail pipefishes of the coral reef, Doryrhamphus, or the Asian stream pipefishes, Microphis. Compared to more basal pipefishes such as these, the apical, seahorse-related genera, such as Enneacampus, tend to rest on the bottom or to crawl in caves or water plants, more rarely swimming around in the water column, even just over the substrate.
All pipefishes share with the seahorses, the habit of male pregnancy inside a brood pouch. The female pipefish deposits her eggs inside the pouch of her mate. Thereafter, a true pregnancy occurs with the male pipefish giving birth. What people think is a unique seahorse trait, is in fact shared with their closest evolutionary relatives. As is the modification of their jaws for suction predation, which is also a pipefish trait.
E. ansorgii is often stated in the aquarium literature, to be a brackish water fish. In fact it is found in freshwater streams and swamps, from the Lower Gambia south to the Cuanza in Angola. This implies that a wide range of pH and hardness may be tolerated by wild E. ansorgii, perhaps from 5.7 to 7.6, though any drop in pH is seasonal, and the average pH of waters that E. ansorgii inhabits, is probably around 6.5 or closer to 7.
Similarly, the tempertures in its range, may be as low as 23 degrees centigrade, or as high as 32 degrees, with a probable average of 27 to 29 degrees, which is probably best maintained as a constant in the aquarium. Within the range of E. ansorgii, the water conductivity and pH are lower in the rainy season, than in the dry season, when the pH value may rise by around 0.4.
It may be seen that E. ansorgii is not really a brackish water fish, breeding where the salinity is zero. Should it be maintained in a brackish aquarium environment, it tolerates only a low specific gravity, reportedly of up to 1.005, and preferably less. It is unlikely that wild E. ansorgii regularly encounter waters with a specific gravity above 1.002. Though they are present in lowland freshwaters near the coast, where at least occasional tidal influences might be suspected. It has been pointed out that the inconsistent presence of E. ansorgii in these stretches is linked to seasonal variations.
Contrary to misinformation about pipefish dietary needs, these species do not require live prey, and E. ansorgii is no exception. It should be noted that new imports will need acclimatisation, to defrosted foods in the aquarium. So unless the aquarist is willing to acclimatise freshly imported fish, it is a case of caveat emptor, and the prospective buyer should demand to watch the fish feed before purchase.
E. ansorgii is a suction feeder with a small mouth opening, like its marine seahorse relatives. Food items provided this fish must be small, and of aquatic arthropod origin. Because these fish swim poorly, and are not competitive feeders, more active tankmates may deprive them of food. Therefore all tankmates should be chosen with care.
The environment for these benthic fishes, should be well planted, and feature decor to crawl over and take shelter in. Their own disposition is placid and inoffensive to fish larger than fry, so tankmates should be of a similarly placid nature, and not compete efficiently with pipefishes for the same foods. If necessary, the aquarist can spot feed his pipefishes, providing them small amounts of foods via a pipette, two or three times a day.
