Zaya Wade Granted Name and Gender Affirmation by LA Court It’s official, Zaya Wade was granted an official name change and assignment of gender in a Los Angeles Court on Friday. Wade has gone by "Zaya" since 2020 after coming out as transgender. With the support of her father, former NBA player Dwyane Wade, and stepmother, Gabrielle Union, Wade has come into herself and popular culture, recently featuring in Puma’s ‘Forever.Classic’ campaign alongside Angus Cloud, Caleb McLaughlin and Iris Apatow. Related | Dwyane Wade Filed to Change Daughter's Legal Name and GenderUnion and her husband have become voices of LGBTQ+ allyship and were honored with the President’s Award at the 2023 NAACP Image Awards “in recognition of special achievement and distinguished public service.” The couple used their time to honor Wade and shine a light on the injustices facing LGBTQ+ youth today, with over 120 anti-trans bills introduced across the United States in 2023. “Black trans people are being targeted, terrorized, and hunted in this country every day, everywhere, and there’s rarely whisper about it,” Union said in an impassioned speech. “We honestly don’t approach this work as activists or leaders as much as we do this as parents,” she said. “Parents who love our children and will do whatever the hell we can to keep them seen and secure and safe.”Dwyane spoke directly to his daughter, sharing: “Zaya, as your father, all I’ve wanted to do was get it right. I’ve sat back and watched how gracefully you’ve taken on the public scrutiny. And even though it’s not easy, I watched you walk out of that house every morning as yourself. I admire how you’ve handled the ignorance in our world.” The road to legally affirming Wade's name and gender was no cakewalk since her father's filing in August 2022. In filing last November, Wade's biological mother, Siohvaughn Funches-Wade, alleged Dwyane was using their daughter's pursuit of name and gender affirmation to “profit.” The former basketball player responded to the allegations on Instagram, stating, "I've received a social media post about me forcing our 15 year old child to be someone she's not and to do something against her will. These are serious and harmful allegations that have hurt our children.” Related | Dwyane Wade Responds to Accusations That He's 'Pressuring' DaughterWith that behind her, Zaya Wade is embarking on her life and future as wholly herself. “Brooklyn” is the New Emotional Indie Folk Song from Elizabeth P.W.
Tumblr media
Brooklyn-based composer, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and singer/songwriter Elizabeth P.W. is driven by her passion for storytelling. Elizabeth weaves together her love of folk music with modern cinematic elements to create evocative and intimate scores for film and tv, and songs that tell compelling stories through unique soundscapes.
Elizabeth P.W. just released her new acoustic folk pop single “Brooklyn.” It has a Joni Mitchel meets Ingrid Michaelson sound in the music and lyrics. It’s a compelling song inspired by the sudden death of her aunt, who was killed by a reckless driver. She came to the realization that after over 100 years of Brooklyn being the hub of her family, she was the last living person in her family in Brooklyn.
“My family’s immigration story was that 3 sisters came from Eastern Europe to Brooklyn and formed the roots of our family tree,” Elizabeth shares. “Over the years our family grew and led to me and my two sisters. When my aunt was killed it was so striking to suddenly be the last person in my family to remain in our beloved Brooklyn. This song is about the passage of time, the world changing around you, and family. I hope it makes people think of their own families, of their own stories. It’s important to hold onto your stories. This song has become even more poignant to me with the arrival of my baby niece, Maya. Our family story has centered around strong women and the next generation has arrived.”
Listen here: https://open.spotify.com/track/5z93ZO4Y3dX611HO5EZki5?si=6fb1bed7a3694516
Her music has premiered in films at the Tribeca Film Festival, Hollyshorts, DOC NYC, Urbanworld Film Festival and Raindance. She’s written the music for everything from non-profit campaigns to congressional campaigns, her recent scoring work includes Stacey Maltin's debut feature film, Triple Threat, which was released in theaters and on streaming services June 2022. She scored Gabriella Canal and Michael Fearon's short documentary, Seasons, which was published by The New Yorker and was honored as a 2022 Student Academy Award Winner. Elizabeth produced and scored the 2021 NAACP Image Award nominated short film, Gets Good Light. She is also a recipient of the 2020 - 2021 Alan Menken Scholarship.
In 2018, Elizabeth partnered with the innovative non-profit, Emily’s Entourage, to turn her debut single into a fundraising and awareness campaign to fight rare mutations of Cystic Fibrosis. The song, “Anyway” is performed by two-time Tony nominee Laura Osnes (Grease, Cinderella, Bandstand), Gideon Glick (Spring Awakening, Significant Other), Christy Altomare (Mamma Mia, Anastasia), Javier Muñoz (In The Heights, Hamilton) and Sarah Levy (Netflix’s Schitt’s Creek).

In the annals of R&B History, the Whispers have earned a solid and memorable position as one of the World's Longest Running Vocal Groups. Celebrating over 55 years in the industry, they are still performing at major concerts, private parties, weddings, and cultural events. They are the cream of soul, embellishing smooth romantic ballads such as "Lady," and "Say Yes," and upbeat dance favorites such as "Rock Steady," "And the Beat Goes On," and "It's a Love Thing." As one of the premier groups to ever grace the stage, their musical success can be attributed to a careful balance of soul, pop, jazz, blues and disco to the delight of millions of fans. They began in 1964 with five, and had only one member change in 1973 of Leaveil Degree's addition due to Gordy Harmon's injured larynx. Then with the passing of Nicholas Caldwell and Marcus Hutson, they have continued to thrive with the trio of Wallace "Scotty" Scott, Walter Scott and Leaveil Degree. They have 33 top ten hits, over 40 charted singles, and 20 multiple gold and platinum albums. In 2020, they released their social justice single, "How Long," now in 2021 they've returned to their soul roots with, "It's Been Too Long." Their five decades of accomplishments have been acknowledged by induction into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame, and Bay Area Blues Society Hall of Fame. They have received the NAACP Image Award, the Black Music Academy Living Legends Award, the Governor's Award from the S.F. Chapter of Grammy, the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award from President Joseph Biden, The "Legends" award from the 2022 Black Music Honors, and Honorary Doctorates from the Christian Bible Institute of Houston, Texas.
