which is completely misunderstanding the original study - the Carbon Majors Database, CDP Carbon Majors Report 2017.
What this report absolutely does not say is "100 companies burn enough fossil fuels to produce 70% of emissions per year." It says something more like "70% of emissions since the 1988 can be traced back to extraction of fossil fuels by 100 producers." Those 100 producers include 36 state-owned companies, 7 state-owned producers, 41 public companies, and 16 private companies.
It also says that over half of industrial emissions since 1988 can be traced to just 25 producers. Of those 635 gigatons of emitted CO2, 59% come from state-owned producers, 32% from public companies, and 9% from private companies.

The largest shares here at the bottom of the graph are all state-owned producers: an aggregate of Chinese state-owned coal producers, Saudi Aramco (owned by the Saudi Arabian state), Gazprom (a Russian company with majority ownership by the state and partial public ownership), National Iranian Oil (unsurprisingly, nationally owned), and then finally we get to the first non-state-owned company (ExxonMobil).
The fraction is nearly identical for values for yearly emissions in 2015 - 59% of emissions since 1988 are tied to extraction by state-owned producers. Nonetheless:
"Emissions from investor-owned companies are significant: of the 30.6 GtCO2e of operational and product GHG emissions from 224 fossil fuel extraction companies, 30% is public investor-owned, 11% is private investor-owned, and 59% is state-owned."
There is absolutely immense responsibility on producers for extracting, marketing, and selling fossil fuels, and for (in several notable cases) deliberately covering up anthropogenic climate change as an outcome of fossil fuel use. But that extraction doesn't occur in a vacuum - fuels are extracted and burned for heat, for electricity, for transport, for industry.

The tweet about nothing changing if people didn't drive and used plastic straws is exactly wrong: fossil fuels are valuable to extract because they're used for everything around us. In the US, transportation accounts for ~29% of greenhouse gas emissions, and 57% of that is from personal vehicles. In 2016, the average passenger car fuel efficiency in the US was 22.1 miles per gallon; an electric car can easily get > 100 miles-per-gallon-equivalent, some as high as 142 miles-per-gallon-equivalent. Magically substituting all gas cars in the US alone for electric would slash nationwide emissions by 13 percentage points even if all those vehicles were powered by electricity made from fossil fuels! (Clearly there are a lot of gross assumptions and approximations there.) (Also, yes, magic wand car swaps aren't a thing we can do in real life, but it's what the tweet said, so I wanted to toss it in there.)
Like, there's a lot of complexity to global emissions - who's responsible, what levers we have to move things in a better direction, what any individual can or can't do. But this specific piece of misinformation or at least misrepresentation really ought to be excised from the record.

The following examples are all in Chinese, of course – but how else to show you what’s really going on unless you actually see for yourself? Now, the extent of what’s considered a “scam” is stretched far and wide, but included are common complaints about how individual indie artists have inconsistent pre-orders (https://tieba.baidu.com/p/8126795911 ), long wait times (http://c.tieba.baidu.com/p/8446099713 ) the quality of the resin from these indie artists are brittle/streaky/full of bubbles (https://tieba.baidu.com/p/7657831519 ), as well as horrid communication with customer service (https://tieba.baidu.com/p/7216544824 ).

What’s the use of this “social credit system” if it doesn’t really stop the scamming, then?
I think I may have mentioned this earlier; the point of a social credit system is more about controlling a population’s aggregate behaviour than the behaviour of individuals. It’s there to quash dissent instead of keeping a community crime-free. Think about it this way, BJD collectors are a small, niche market with a high price tag. And if the Chinese government is lax enough to allow rampant counterfeit foods and medication to go on for years (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIpA_RwEtLE&t=33s and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYr87XCAa48 and https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-56080092 ), would the system really protect a small group of rather privileged individuals? You might ask, “Hey, OCDA, aren’t these people caught? That means the system works, right?” The answer is, “Yes, and they are just the tip of the iceberg. There are plenty more of these people who were never caught.” I think we have all heard that just because something’s immoral doesn’t mean it’s illegal. Legality is never the bottom line that we should hold each other accountable to, but these folks get by banking on that their immorality will never be caught, and unless they were caught, what they do aren’t illegal.
On the other hand, the government is quick to stop anything that could cause a social stir. No matter how big the topic might be (human trafficking, public corruption, the existence of COVID, you name it), if there was too much interest in a topic that the government deemed “unsuitable” (if it gives you an answer at all), it can be rubbed out of social media overnight. This is possible because 1. There’s only one kind of social media, which is closely monitored by the State and 2. There’s the Great Firewall of China and scaling the wall can incur a fine and sometimes even probation. The person who started the whole furor may be invited by the police for a talking-to (or just disappeared, either way.)
BJDs are small fry, we know that, so where do minor “scams” lie? Yes, it is inherently frustrating as a consumer to realise that one cannot reinforce trade laws across borders or hold non-registered sellers under the same scrutiny as a registered company. I understand that personally as a victim of a bungled preorder as well. But this so-called “Social Credit” system is never the way to go. Not even Black Mirror or Minority Report can replicate the reality that’s inside China, folks. The truth is worse than fiction.

My Grandfather’s Betamax and Modelling New Product Diffusion [1] [2]:

My grandfather loved his Betamax camcorder.  Sometimes when I picture him he is carrying it with him, casually strung across his shoulder with the rainbow Sony strap (not unlike the one pictured) on display.  My grandfather was convinced that Betamax was the superior and bound-to-be enduring technology.  I imagine that he thought those home movies would be family heirlooms to be viewed again and again via compatible Betamax players.
I don’t want to paint the picture of my grandfather as naïve.  He was well educated (with degrees in Electrical Engineering and an MBA to boot) and a highly successful executive in one of the world’s enduring mega-engineering corporations.  Perhaps he would be better characterized as an earlier version of me: be that a more successful, more dignified, more worldly, and much taller version of me.  But one thing is for sure, his intuition regarding the staying power of Betamax was wide of the mark. Certainly, we could dissect the various blunders on Sony’s part which ensured that Betamax technology would never achieve market saturation.  Yes, it’s easy to Monday morning quarterback most things, but could the right models have been applied to predict, with a measure of accuracy, the rise and fall of Betamax?  For that matter, can we model diffusion of new products to untested markets?  Take, for example, pre-sliced peanut butter slices, adhesive bandages embedded with nanocrystals of pure silver, a PC plug-in to release scents, a collapsible wheel, and a modified synthetic substance for horse racetracks.  While these products sound far-fetched, they all share something in common.  They are all 100% real products.
One powerful tool for forecasting the market diffusion of new and innovative products is the Bass Diffusion Model.  Prior to Sony’s sale of the first Betamax camcorder (to my grandfather or someone just like him), the existing customer base was exactly zero.  As product adoption began, the positive feedback from the handful of early adopters was so minimal that it was negligible, and thus a predictive model such as the Bass model needed to capture alternate adoption channels such as news media coverage, advertising, and directed sales efforts by Sony.  To solve this problem, Frank Bass developed the Bass Diffusion Model in 1969 (see sample model diagram below) which solved the start-up puzzle by postulating that potential adopters are made aware of the new product via external information sources which can be modelled as constant over time in terms of magnitude and persuasiveness (effectiveness)[3].  The aggregate adoption rate is the sum of adoptions resulting from word of mouth and adoptions resulting from advertising and external influences.

So, what happened to Betamax?  Long before it could be cannibalized by superior technology it was dead in its tracks due to inferior technology: VHS (boo!).  This was one of the rare times that Sony publicly and massively miscalculated.  The popularity of this new technology was largely a function of externalities, specifically the size of the user base.  By playing it close to the vest with its new technology, Sony kept the Betamax out of the hands of its competitors.  We all know how that played out.  Very soon every home had some type of VHS machine, and my family was left to watch my grandfather’s home movies while others were out renting E.T. and Tootsie and all of the other the latest blockbusters.  The takeaway messages are numerous: 1) don’t trust your grandfather’s intuition, 2) all models have their limitations, and 3) pre-packaged peanut butter slices are only part of the solution without the jelly slices to go with.

There’s a tendency — a passive acceptance that belongs somewhere along a continuum between faith and negligence — to assume that Google is merely a benign, disinterested gatekeeper of a vast repository of information. But nothing could be further from the truth. The reality is that the near-monopolistic control of information in our society resides with an explicitly progressive technology company. This week’s release of Google Gemini, a Large Language Model with a chat interface that is also capable of generating images, couldn’t make this more clear.
As you can probably gather by scrolling through the hilariously, appallingly, and ominously woke image examples I’ve provided, Google has coded Gemini’s AI in such a way that specific qualifications are added to any user prompt, so that the results conform to delicate modern sensibilities and the whims of modern DEI obsessions by ensuring that “diverse ethnicities and genders” are featured. [...] The images created are so preposterous, so comically insulting to the truth, that it’s tempting to assume we’re being trolled. But we’re not. And this is serious, because Google is clearly capable of completely shifting perceptions of history in the blink of an eye.
The text-generating aspect of Gemini is no less dangerous, and every bit as tainted with a paternalistic, shockingly heavy-handed encoded ultra-progressive bias. Questions conflicting with progressive assumptions either go unanswered, or users are simply fed straight up lies. It’s an attempt by a group of fringe upper-class wokes to control information and feed unwitting users only knowledge fit for the progressive vision of society. And it is strongly reminiscent of what Matthew Crawford once described as “a cadre of subtle dia­lecticians working at a meta-level on the formal conditions of thought, nudging the populace through a cognitive framing operation to be conducted beneath the threshold of explicit argument.” These subtle dia­lecticians make subtle changes to the information we see, but in aggregate they shape our entire world.
It would be unwise to assume that because the launch of Gemini has been widely derided as a massive and amusing faceplant that it will ultimately go down as a failed joke. Google is already retooling the image generator, and the “this response has been checked by a human” note that appears when you ask the chat interface a question suggests a process for tweaking “bad responses.”
Some people will no doubt dismiss concerns about Gemini by pointing out that there are other Large Language Models available. But this is ignorant. It cannot be emphasized enough how powerful and widely used Google is.
Google’s search market share is 91.47%. By comparison, Bing’s is 3.43%.1
The company handles a whopping 99,000 searches per second, totaling over 8.5 billion daily.
Google is by far the biggest mobile operating system in the world. As of May 2022, there were over three billion active monthly Android devices, with more than a billion new Android phones activated in the previous year alone.
Google’s search index includes about 400 billion webpages.
The point is that Google’s immense market leverage cannot be ignored. And as a conveniently available AI embedded within the same programs most Americans already use, its market penetration is instantly far deeper than any competitor’s. Furthermore, as National Review’s Jeffrey Blehar points out, Google is widely used in schools, often with licensing technology. It’s not difficult to envision Gemini, which is likely to become the most powerful epistemological technology ever created, turning into a pervasive “free” resource that students are regularly guided to once the use of AI becomes an officially approved “learning tool.” And it will be regarded as authoritative not only because of the influence Google wields, but also because of the convenience in receiving direct answers without the need for further research.
You don’t need me to tell you that none of this bodes well for the future. Make no mistake about it: Google intends this program to shape our understanding of the world. We’re talking about fundamental questions concerning who will determine which interpretation of reality will be programmed into generative technology, and who does the programming. And we’re beginning to realize how easily our sense of reality can become radically, hopelessly compromised by a relatively small handful of progressive ideologues.
