Javi (Javier) Rivera Aragón

Javier is a Spanish version of Xavier (which makes complete sense but I didn't know it until I looked it up for this) and means "new house." I didn't give the name much thought when I picked it. It was just a Spanish/Mexcan boy's name and I liked the way it sounded. 

Ale (Alejandra) Rivera Aragón

Alejandra means "defender of men" and is a Spanish version of "Alexandra" and a feminine version of "Alexander". Her nickname, Ale, is pronounced "AH-leh", not like the alcoholic beverage. Ale was named after her father (Alec or Alejo depending on the universe).

Bonus fact: When Alejo and Elena found out they were having twins (and a boy and a girl) they picked names for both of them. Alejo planned to named the older twin after himself - Alejandro for a boy, Alejandra for a girl - and then Javier or Jacinta for the younger one. Javi will NEVER know how lucky he was to be the younger twin because he would hate his name even more if he was named after his father.

Lister "Mickey" Micheals

Mickey, which is his preferred name, is a diminutive of Michael, which is his last name. His first name, Lister, means "dyer". I picked Lister after the main character in the book Red Dwarf (which I would 100% recommend to anyone who can find it) because I was looking for a name that the character might not want to use. It came down to Lister or Eustace (thank you, Chronicles of Narnia) but I'd already used Eusticia in another fic so "Lister" won out here.

Samuel Harris

Samuel means "Told by God". I actually decided on "Sam" first because I was looking for a short (one syllable), unisex name. I know that some people are actually named Sam (not short for Samuel or Samantha or some such) but for this character it definitely felt like a nickname. Even if it's what they go by 98% of the time. I'm still not completely sold on the last name Harris but it's staying until I come up with something I like better. (Who knows, in that time I might warm up to it!)

Nadia Das

Nadia is both an Arabic name and a Russian one but I'm choosing to go with the Arabic meaning which is "tender, delicate". One of my childhood friends had an older sister named Nadia and ever since the name always felt kind of magical to me? The character is NOT based on her at all, I just wanted to use the name somewhere and it seemed like a good fit for this character.

Si algo en la fotografía despierta la lasciva del arte contemporáneo es su condición de no ser arte. Lo paradójico resulta en que, a pesar de no serlo, sigue produciendo su propia belleza.

La fotografía hereda del modernismo la ilusión de ser siempre útil; como si fuera una herramienta para algo cuando en realidad es mayormente inepta. Esta exhibición se centra en esa ineptitud, abocándose a cómo la circulación, el ruido, la percepción, la incertidumbre y demás elementos borrosos nos demuestran que -si bien- la fotografía puede fijar una imagen, no puede fijar un significado.

La fotografía como tal se desgasta, se nubla, se ciega, tener la imagen es perderla. Lo que sobrevive es el residuo, como medio que, deteriorado, llevado al extremo, se diluye y se transforma, se niega en su primera intención para convertirse en otra cosa. Los artistas reunidos en esta exposición recurren a la fotografía para negarla, para conjurarla, para revelar su naturaleza última como portento, como revelación. Van en pos de lo indecible, apercibiéndose de los signos por aparecer todavía, asomados al umbral de lo invisible, mirando lo que no se ve, listos para pronunciarlo: ese último detenimiento que en su mínimo balbuceo invoca la luz.

Where power really lies: Depiction of female superheroes today

      Chances are you are one of many who saw Captain Marvel in theaters recently or maybe you saw Wonder Woman when it was released back in 2017. Or maybe you are one of those who likes to shout “Darna!” when you were younger (or you still do it today). Next to being a princess, becoming a superhero is one of many young girls’ fantasies.

      But why is it that despite the long history of comic books and comic book movies, only now are we seeing successful films or upcoming films about female superheroes? Has the film industry finally realized that you don’t need good-looking men with ripped muscles to be the face of your movie? Or that women have been demanding for big productions revolving around female comic book characters? Or, maybe, these filmmakers and storytellers had a hard time figuring out how to write an excellent female superhero that truly embodies the essence of being a woman in this society.

      Let us take a look on three superheroes and why their great characterization has contributed to their success as films and to their impact on women here in the Philippines and around the world.

Wonder Woman: Love is not a weakness, but strength

Wonder Woman, or Princess Diana of Themyscira, is a DC Comics character that has very feminist roots. She was created by William Moulton Marston who wanted to create a superhero who gains victories not through violence but through love or compassion. His wife, Elizabeth, suggested that he make the character a woman.

      There have been numerous adaptations of Wonder Woman and many fabulous women have had the chance to step into this role. A lot of you though are mostly familiar with the recent adaptation played by the incredible Gal Gadot in movies such as Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and in her own solo movie, Wonder Woman (2017).

      Unlike her fellow superheroes in DC Comics, previous films or television series about Wonder Woman have failed to attain the success that films about Superman and Batman have reached. For a long time, there weren’t any films about this female superhero. That’s unfortunate because, how many reboots of Superman and Batman occurred already? Two? Three? I’ve lost count (and also stopped caring). What, then, did Gadot’s Wonder Woman did right, that previous versions failed at, that made it such a hit with women everywhere?

      It’s because it stayed true to what her creator, Marston, wanted the character to be. He wanted a female superhero “with all the strength of Superman plus all the allure of a good and beautiful woman.” This was perfectly portrayed in the film, where Diana displayed qualities such as compassion, sweetness, and peace-loving and wasn’t seen as weak because of these. In fact, the film emphasized that these traits made her stronger. It’s not because of her capability to punch through hundreds of bad guys, but the strength of her character and goodness of her heart is what made Wonder Woman really special.

Captain Marvel: A ‘90s Heroine with Present-Day Struggles

      Carol Danvers, or Captain Marvel, graced our screens and made her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) just a month ago. It is the 21st film in the MCU and is the first one to be led by a female superhero. Makes you wonder what took them so long…

      When the first posters and trailers came out, there were people, mostly men, who criticized Carol for “not smiling enough” or “not showing any emotion” besides looking fierce and tough. Some of them even photoshopped the posters to make it look like she is smiling. Brie Larson, who plays Captain Marvel, clapped back at her haters and posted on Instagram photoshopped images of other superheroes like Iron Man and Captain America smiling on their own posters. She showed how ridiculous it is that women can’t be portrayed as tough or fierce just like male superheroes. Brie also said that, sadly, many women have experienced this kind of thing, having men tell you that you should smile more because you’ll look prettier that way. It’s like women are not allowed to feel any other emotion or that we can’t look serious.

      Coincidentally, a similar situation happens to Captain Marvel in the movie, where a biker guy tells Carol to smile. Both Brie and the director, Anna Boden, have said that it was not a response to that criticism but that it was not an uncommon thing that women experience. It was written in the script long before the controversy happened and, lo and behold, the same thing happens in real life.

Darna: A Powerful Dalagang Pilipina

      The Philippines also boasts a rich collection of superheroes, but none has had a greater impact on Filipino pop culture like Darna. There isn’t a single Filipino who doesn’t know this female superhero. When you are asked to mention a Filipino superhero, I bet the first one to come to mind is this character.

      Darna was created by legendary comic book cartoonist, Mars Ravelo. He started working on this character before World War II, when she was still named Varga. She was intended as the Philippines’ equivalent of Superman, drawing on Ravelo’s concept that America is “male” and our country, as the one colonized by them, as “female.” He proposed the idea to both Filipino and American publishers but was turned down because, according to them, “female superheroes will not sell.”

      But, as we can see now, Darna became a big hit with readers and many film and television show adaptations have come out throughout the years. Rosa del Rosario was the first actress to play Darna on screen in 1951. Other actresses that have brought this character to life are Vilma Santos, Lorna Tolentino, Rio Locsin, Angel Locsin, and Marian Rivera. There is an upcoming remake of Darna and, with Angel Locsin and Liza Soberano exiting the project, who knows who the next woman to step into her shoes would be. There is a pressure on both the filmmakers and the actress who would play Darna because this character is so iconic and well-beloved by Filipinos.

      Of course, Filipinos were quickly endeared to her not only because of her superpowers, but also because of her love for her family, a trait that is very special to Filipinos. Darna, as her alter ego Narda, takes care of her grandmother, Lola Asay. Who would also forget her brother and sidekick, Ding. Also, we grew to love the ever-inspiring story of a simple village girl who, upon encountering a small meteorite from space, transforms into a powerful being. It’s a very good metaphor than you can become someone extraordinary despite of your small beginnings.

Dawn of a New Age

      These three superheroines all have faced their challenges and criticisms. For some reason, they underwent greater scrutiny than their male counterparts. But, despite all these, they found a way to triumph and still make their impact on women all around the world. Their films made millions at the box office and it’s good to see that the film industry is now more confident in telling superhero stories from a woman’s perspective. In the past, and, unfortunately, some movies still do this, women are just there as love interests or as the prize that the hero gets to win at the end. There are still others that sexualizes female superheroes, but because of the help of social media, these kinds of films get called out quickly.

      Women using social media to better voice out what they want to see in these kinds of films may be one of the reasons why the film industry is starting to pay more attention and improve their characterizations of women in films. Women are now at the forefront and not just sidekicks to male superheroes. Let’s hope that this continues and lastly, let’s hope that future endeavors continue to portray these female superheroes with a much honest reflection on how it is to be a woman in this present society.

"Habana 500" A Cuban Jazz Guitar Album

In Honor to Havana City’s 500 years of foundation

"Habana 500", the first album of Cuban-American guitarist Ricky Castillo is an homage to one of the most beautiful cities in Cuba, Havana. This album represents a personal approach to Afro-Cuban music and cultural roots.

"Cuban music has contributed to the formation and development of many musical genres worldwide, it is a privilege for me to have taken my first steps in this city full of music and magic, rhythms such as Latin Jazz, Mambo, Rumba, The Songo, the Cha Cha Cha, the Danzón, the Salsa and many others have taken place thanks to the conglomeration of different cultural currents that have arrived on the island. In a historic city frequented by pirates and corsairs, governed by Spaniards and English, in the city of the columns, as Alejo Carpentier would say, center of interaction between the new world and the old continent, we find ourselves detained in time, surrounded by the sea, and bathed in an infinite panorama of social and visual inspiration that grows every second. When I create music, I am coral, I am sand, I am the sea that surrounds my island, and like the waves, which serve as a bridge between the ocean and our land, I feel obliged to rescue, and bring afloat, that vast cultural history that our island possesses!

Artists like Leo Brouwer, Ernesto Lecuona, Arturo Sandoval, Luis Marqueti, Isaac Nicola, Miguel Matamoros, Sindo Garay, Chucho Valdes, Juan Formell, César Portillo, Gonzalo Roig, Amadeo Roldán, Barbarito Díez, Cesar Lopez, Arsenio Rodríguez, Antonio María Romeu , Roberto Faz, Tata Guines, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Enrique Jorrín, Dámaso Pérez Prado, Paquito de Rivera, and many others that I could not quote in a day, have been a source of direct inspiration in my formation as a musician.

VANDALIZAN IGLESIA NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LOURDES EN RIO PIEDRAS. Agentes, adscritos al Precinto de Monte Hatillo, investigaron querella de destrucción, daño y vandalismo de bienes reportado a las 11:40 de la mañana en la iglesia católica Nuestra Señora de Lourdes, ubicada en la calle Alejo Cruzado, en Río Piedras. Según alegó el querellante, Benito Hierro, que alguien obtuvo acceso a los predios del lugar y rompió tres ventanas en cristal, localizadas en el lateral lado este y lámpara de alumbrado. De acuerdo al perjudicado, el vándalo utilizó tiestos con plantos, los cuales también rompió, para ocasionar los daños en la iglesia, y al momento los mismos no han sido estimados. LA CONQUISTA DE LOS INDIOS DE JUÁREZ!!

Los Indios de Ciudad Juárez conquistaron en 1982 el campeonato de la Liga Mexicana, al anotarse una impresionante e imprevista barrida en la serie final sobre los Tigres capitalinos. 

Fue también el primer campeonato de José "Zacatillo" Guerrero, que terminaría su gran carrera con el mayor número de triunfos entre los managers que han desfilado por el circuito, un total de 1976 victorias que le dan una amplia ventaja sobre el segundo lugar en ese departamento.

Ya con aquellos Indios de 1982 estuvo el zurdo Teodoro Higuera, quien luego sería gran estrella en las Ligas Mayores, pero sólo tuvo récord de 9-12 y 4.05, pero el derecho Rafael García, que tuvo varias grandes temporadas en los diamantes de la Liga Mexicana, ganó 19 juegos para ser el brazo más importante del equipo fronterizo, que terminó la temporada con un récord de 73-55, que le dio el primer lugar de la Zona Noroeste con tres juegos de ventaja sobre Saltillo.

Petroleros de Poza Rica con David García de manager fue el Súper Líder ese año con 81-49, pero perdió el primer playoff ante unos Tigres manejados por Fernando Remes, en sólo cinco juegos. Tigres llegó a la final barriendo al Azules de Coatzacoalcos, que tuvo al famoso Cananea Reyes de manager, al regresar después de un año en Ligas Mayores como coach de tercera base de los Marineros de Seattle. Tigres había quedado en segundo lugar del grupo suroeste a ocho juegos y medio del Coatzacoalcos.

Por primera vez, los dos equipos de la final llegaron con récords idénticos de ocho ganados y uno perdido y con los Tigres reforzados por el pitcher Dick Drago de Ligas Mayores, salieron como favoritos, pero al jugarse los dos primeros juegos en el Parque del Seguro Social los Indios fueron los ganadores. Los Tigres contaban con una fuerte batería pero no fueron pieza para los Indios que se llevaron los cuatro juegos seguidos de la final para un formidable récord global de 12-1 en la post temporada.

Terry Lee, un refuerzo de los Cerveceros de Milwaukee, fue el Más Valioso de la final al tener brillantes actuaciones ofensivas. Lee bateó .315 en la campaña y los Indios tuvieron en el americano Bob Smith al campeón bateador de la temporada con .357 y líder en hits con 164. Ese Terry Lee tuvo un año de siete jonrones con los Indios, aunque luego tendría dos campañas en la Mexicana con 18 y 20 cuadrangulares.

Gregory Biagini aportó 17 jonrones y 90 carreras empujadas, mientras el muy consistente Jaime López, un auténtico Mr. 300, dio para .316. Otro jugador muy importante de los campeones Indios lo fue el veloz Antonio Briones, que fue nuevamente el campeón robador de bases con un total de 60. En cinco diferentes campañas fue Briones líder de robos y por muchos años tuvo el primer lugar de ese departamento con 490 hasta ser rebasado por Luis Arredondo, que terminó con 527. En 1987 impondría Briones un récord que perdura al robar siete bases en un juego.

El boricua René Quiñones fue segundo en más victorias de los Indios con un total de 14 y José Peña tuvo un casi perfecto récord de 10-1 para ser el campeón de ganados y perdidos con un alto promedio de .909. Para Peña fue un año especial, ya que el nativo de Ciudad Juárez y gran lanzador demostró que se puede ser profeta en su tierra. Fue en los amateurs de Juárez donde llamó la atención y el que fuera pitcher y umpire, Herón Anota, se lo recomendó a su amigo Manuel Oliveros en la ciudad de México, mismo que lo llevó a un Tigres donde el Ing. Alejo Peralta estaba comenzando con sus escuelas beisboleras para tratar de encontrar nuevos estrellas mexicanos.

En 1982 los Tigres llevaban ya 16 años sin ganar un campeonato y después de este acercamiento iban a tener otros 10 años de vigilia.

En ese 1982 fue elegido Ejecutivo del Año el joven directivo Plinio Escalante, que al frente de los Leones de Yucatán estuvo en los playoffs y había logrado la construcción de un nuevo estadio en Mérida, el Kukulcán, que reemplazaba al parque Carta Clara que había sido por tanto años la casa del Beisbol en la ciudad blanca. Plinio Escalante es actualmente el presidente de la Liga Mexicana.
