Alfa-Romeo 1300 Junior Z - 1971 by Perico001 Coachwork by Zagato Sein Début gab der Alfa-Romeo Junior Zagato 1969 am Turiner Autosalon.

"Junior Z". Cooler than cool. 1973 Alfa Romeo 1600 Zagato Currently offered for sale by Cool Classic Club @coolclassicclub - Alfa Romeo produced just 402 Zagato Coachbuilt examples of the 1600 Junior Z between 1972 and 1975, of which just 121 cars are known to exist in the Zagato Register. As with its predecessor the Giulietta SZ, Zagato chose to base its new coupe on an Alfa Spider chassis rather than a GT chassis to take advantage of its lighter weight, shorter wheelbase and shorter front and rear overhangs. Zagato created a low drag aerodynamic fastback coupe featuring a very low frontal area, low roofline and fastback profile. As with its predecessor the Giulietta SZ, weight was minimized with several characteristic Zagato features such as an aluminum hood, ultra-lightweight bumpers, unique lightweight Zagato seats and a special lightweight dashboard devoid of a glove box door. With bespoke Zagato features throughout including an electrically elevating rear hatch for low drag flow through ventilation and construction taking place at both Alfa Romeo and the Zagato coachworks, the Junior Z proved very expensive to produce resulting in just 402 examples being produced as compared to 3,917 Alfa Romeo Montreals. - ☎️Enquiries: @coolclassicclub 📸Photography: @coolclassicclub 📲Follow: @izzoliauto & @coolclassicclub - #1973AlfaRomeo1600Zagato #AlfaRomeo1600Zagato #IZZOLIautomobilia https://www.instagram.com/p/CBgtd5HDrmq/?igshid=we888o40jqtu

Today on OldMotors.net (you know where to go), it’s the history of the very unusual or, as they’d say in 1969, “Far Out,” Alfa-Romeo 1300 Junior Zagato. The story of the car arguably starts the day Elio Zagato hired Ercole Spada in 1960, despite Spada’s lack of a portfolio or formal training. Zagato got a great talent and throughout the sixties he consistently created amazing cars for the famous Carrozzeria, shaping metal against the wind and creating very high concept styles. In 1967, as Zagato was exhibiting the Rover 2000 TCZ and Lancia Flavia Supersport Zagato concept cars, Alfa’s Giuseppe Luraghi approached Elio and his brother Gianni Zagato about creating yet another sporty version of the Alfa 105-series coupe. That car became Spada’s swan-song at Zagato, the Junior Z. Underneath, the wildly wedge-shaped Junior Z was pretty much a 1300 Junior Spider, using a modified version of the Spider chassis. The goal was to create a faster and more exclusive 105 coupe, but Zagato and Alfa never took the car racing. Unlike the SZ and TZ, the Junior Z was more about swanning around on the Corso. Spada’s radical style was very ahead of its time, and the almost pure wedge shape, an outgrowth of many style studies he was working on at the time including the Lancia, the Rover, and some concept for Volvo, was almost a car of the 1980s in hindsight. Alfa delivered the first chassis to Zagato in July of ‘68 and the car debuted at the 1969 Turin show. Production was complex - involving multiple moves from Zagato to Maggiora to Alfa and back to Zagato, and the car was expensive for a 1300. This, combined with the radical styling and a lack of promotion and advertising, led to slow sales - just 1102 1300s and 402 of the later, faster 1600 versions were made through the end of 1973. The car might not have been a success, but its shape cast a long shadow - it was still a source of inspiration for various hatches and coupes well into the late 1980s, including the Honda CRX. Spada left Zagato for Ghia in 1970, around the time production was ramping up. The Junior Z’s look was echoed later in Giugiaro’s Alfetta GTV and many other wedge shapes in the 1970s. https://www.instagram.com/p/B9uoklplBTq/?igshid=rugvzsx6dxeq

Alfa Romeo 1600 Junior Z, 1972, by Zagato. The Junior Z was launched in 1969 based on a shortened floorpan from the Giulia saloon with a 1300 cc DOHC engine. For 1972 it was upgraded to 1570cc, the revised cars are slightly longer than the 1300 and used larger tail lights from the 2000 Berlina saloon. Zagato built 402 examples of the 1600Z which remained on sale until 1975
