@flamingo-strikes tagged me in a game to list either 9 of my fave books of 2023, or the 9 top books on my 2024 to be read
now i read one (1) book in 2023 so i will Also be choosing the latter XD, thanks zaina!!!
Ghosts of Gold Mountain by Gordon H. Chang - i love california history and i love railroads!! this book talks about the chinese people that built the transcontinental railroad so im sure i will not cry about it
People Love Dead Jews by Dara Horn - yeah that title is pretty self explanatory
Fen, Bog & Swamp by Annie Proulx - idk this just looked interesting and i love making myself depressed with climate change ig
Unmasking AI by Joy Buolamwini - part of me wants to read this just for the badass cover but also genuinly "ai" is one of those hot button topics that i think would be fun to read about
Driving the Green Book by Alvin Hall - the green book is something i learned about via urbanism and i think it might be an interesting read, certainly eye opening the way that black americans had to live both in the past and into today
Quackery by Lydia Kang and Nate Pedersen - i read a book in January called the history of the world in six glasses, it was really good and the coke section sent me into some sort of something about patent medicine so i added this to my list
The Cost of Free Land by Rebecca Clarren - ://// yep its more books depression, this time about jewish diaspora and native rights yaaaay
Hijab Butch Blues by Lamya H - another book i slapped right onto my tbr because of the title, also partially because of how mad some of the GR comments are
Before We Were Trans by Dr. Kit Heyam - this looked really interesting i wanted to learn more about non european forms of gender.
uhhh @bingheluvr69 and @h-y-p-h-e-n-d-o-t-s u guys r the only ones i know who read so if u wanna do too go for it

Dozens of Songs Tag Game
I was tagged by the lovely @thebiwifeonao3 for the dozens of songs tag game!!! Here’s how to play. Also I’m sorry for how much M*A*S*H is on this.
step one:
so here's the game: 12 songs you've recently listened to (include a lyric that you like maybe), 12 ships (can be solo or platonic, dw) (hard mode: from 12 fandoms???) that the songs loosely make you think of, & tag 12 people to do the same.
easy mode: do half a dozen instead idk
here's a fun idea: you could even listen to the playlist from the person who tagged you to use some/all of their song picks!!
step two:
whether you've been tagged or not, you can send an ask with the song & pairing and create a work based on the idea. And the theme of 12 is fun so could be 12 characters, words, paragraphs, chapters, anything!
profit!!! (have fun & maybe end up reading some new fic!)
Songs and ships under the read more thingy
1. XXL (LANY) — Margaret Houlihan/Lorraine Anderson, M*A*S*H

Everything was beautiful at the ballet. Graceful men lift lovely girls in white. Yes, everything was beautiful at ballet. Hey! I was happy... at the ballet. That's why I started class... Up a steep and very narrow stairway. To the voice like a metronome. Up a steep and very narrow stairway. It wasn't paradise... It wasn't paradise... It wasn't paradise... But it was home.

H. G. Wells' famed story, THE WAR OF THE WORLDS was one of the pioneering expressions of Science Fiction - though that term would not be coined for decades to come. The novel saw publication in 1898. The alien invaders in the Wells' story are from the planet Mars. In subsequent tales by other fiction writers Mars would continue to be a commonly used origin for "little green men". Lovecraft of course knew about Wells and respected his work. Both the mechanical ships of the Martian invaders and the aliens themselves are depicted by Wells as having octopoid features. Did Wells' Martians inspire H. P. Lovecraft's conception of Great Cthulhu? Certainly the possibility is there though I don't recall reading Lovecraft ever admitting such. Below are pictured 2 illustrations inspired by THE WAR of the WORLDS. To the left is a bookmark being sold at Barnes and Noble, to the right is an illustration by Henrigue Alvin Correa. The Correa illo. certainly calls to mind Lovecraft's image of Cthulhu emerging from his tomb city as it rose from the bottom of the Pacific. HPL's Cthulhu, however, would dwarf any human in contrast to this picture. (Exhibit 467)

Description: “NCIS History-Special Agent Vietnam is a comprehensive account of naval counterintelligence and criminal investigations in Vietnam. Doug Hubbard's first-hand experience provides unique insights into this little explored topic of the war, and the addition of a broad spectrum of his photos complements the narrative with a real life appeal. In an era when the term "terrorism" was not yet in vogue, NIS' investigations of insurgent attacks against US troops is a grim reminder of current threats our military faces in Afghanistan and around the globe on a daily basis.” Michael Sulick, Former Director, CIA National Clandestine Service “Although the Viet Nam War gives up its secrets grudgingly, former special agent Douglass Hubbard unveils an intriguing account of U.S. Naval Intelligence operations in the Republic of Vietnam. Drawing on his three years’ service in Vietnam and his subsequent research and interviews, Hubbard weaves a masterful story with 'NCIS History Special Agent Vietnam' that is equally inspiring and frustrating-just as the war itself proved to be.” Colonel Joseph H. Alexander, USMC. (Ret.) author of the Battle History of the U.S. Marines “Doug Hubbard Jr. explores the seamy underside of the Vietnam War from his ‘catbird seat’ as a special agent of the Naval Investigative Service. At the most there were never more than twenty-one of these Naval Intelligence officers serving in-country, and they had to deal with an overload of such unsavory matters as counter espionage, sabotage, black marketing, currency manipulation, simple theft, drug trafficking, subversion, rape, and murder. Sometimes these investigations came to a brilliant resolution that Sherlock Holmes would have applauded. More often they foundered because of command apathy or indifference.” Brigadier General Edwin H. Simmons, USMC, Chief of Staff of the First Marine Division in 1970, former head of the Marine Corps History Branch, and author of Frozen Chosin: US Marines at the Changjin Reservoir “Doug Hubbard’s exposition with NCIS History Special Agent Vietnam defines a period of counterintelligence development in the Vietnam conflict and records its events for the first time. Compiled personal recollections of wartime special agents make this historical narrative a defining work in the legacy left by the group of Naval Intelligence professionals who devised rules for counterintelligence and force protection in the challenging and dangerous arena of Vietnam in the 1960s. Theirs was a monumental contribution to the U.S. government’s efforts to achieve stability in the Republic of Vietnam, particularly in the early days of the mission when much was accomplished by a select few.” Maynard C. Anderson, former Assistant Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Security Policy
Review - It was a decent book with a lot of historical information on the Vietnam War and NIS's members. The main problem with the book was how light it was on actual cases vs pages and pages of commentary of who was assigned when and where. Another major issue were the multiple misspellings (Viet Congo is a common one) and repeated paragraphs. It's not unreadable, but it had issues. But for the historical information, and a few insights into deserters, fraggings, and a few interesting cases, it's worth a read.

ABC Survey
A What’s your age?
32.
Are you planning on seeing Alvin and the chipmunks in theaters?
I’m not planning on anything movie-related, but something tells me that this survey is outdated.
Do you know anyone who has a birthday in April?
Quite a few of people.
B Do you have any brothers? If so, what are their names?
I don’t have brothers, although I wish I had an older brother.
What day of the week were you born?
Wednesday.
What letter of the alphabet does your name start with?
J.
C Have you ever been caught doing something sexual?
No.
Ever had a run-in with the cops?
Neither.
What kind of car do you drive? If you don’t have your own car, what is your dream car?
Renault Clio.
D Last time you got detention?
Never?
What color will your wedding dress be?
I’m a man, are women the only people who can take surveys? Besides, I’m already married anyway.
What day of the week is it?
Thursday.
E Did you vote in the last election?
It’s mandatory to vote in my country, so I had no choice.
Is there someone who means everything to you?
Yeah, my husband.
Do you ever used the word ‘epic’?
Not in speech, and this question has a weird syntax.
F Do you say ‘fuck’ a lot?
I do, but in Dutch.
Who is your best friend?
My husband and some others.
Ever thought you would be with someone forever?
It’s likely on my side, I’m more loyal than people around seem to be.
G What is your grandma’s name?
One was Sofie, the other is Stephanie.
What grades did you get in middle school?
Average because there were some really boring subjects.
Would you ever dye your hair green?
I did several times, no problem.
H Ever rode a horse?
No, and honestly, I’m not interested.
How many hours do you work a week?
40, but currently I’m on a sick note.
How often do you smoke?
Never did in my life.
I Favorite ice cream flavor?
Boring questioon, pass.
Do you like ice skating?
No, I hate it.
Do you like the way Ivy looks?
Who on earth is Ivy??
J Did you join any clubs in high school?
Some of drawing, it was fun.
Do you know anyone with a jeep?
Not in person.
Do you like the name Jack?
There are worse tragedies.
K Do you knock on the door or ring the doorbell?
Only idiots knock if there’s a doorbell, unless it doesn’t work.
Last time you used a knife?
Today, to open the package.
Ever kicked a guy in the balls?
Sure, because I know how it hurts.
L Ever been in love?
Twice, but was it romantic? I can’t tell.
Is there someone you’re lusting after currently?
Lust doesn’t exist in my dictionary.
Do you care about looks?
No. I love it when a man has beautiful eyes, but there’s personality that decides if I like him or not. If I like his personality, then he’s beautiful to me, no matter how he looks like.
M Last person you were mad at?
I don’t remember.
Do you like the misfits?
Isn’t it a band? I’m pretty sure their name is written in capitals.
Give us a meaningful quote:
I’m not a quote collector.
N   What’s one thing you’ve never done but would like to try?
Play the violin, but it requires two good hands.
What’s one thing you need to do?
Rehabilitation of my hand.
Do you like day or night better?
Days, especially nmornings.
O   Do you like Opera music?
I don’t mind, but I wouldn’t choose it.
Do you like oranges?
No, but I like orange juice.

No. It’s typical for my nation not to open up to others.
P Do you pee in the shower?
I’m pretty sure lots of people do, but no one talks about it.
Do you like the name Penelope?
It’s not bad.
Ever had a panic attack?
Twice or so.

Typically when I’m alone.
Do you ever replace G’s with Q’s?
Does anyone do that?
R Are you in a relationship? If not, do you want to?
I’m married.
How old do you look and how old are you really?
People usually give me anything from 20 to 25, and I’m 32.
How fast can you run?
I don’t run, I was paralysed once.
S What’s one stereotype people always assume about you?
That I’ve only had good grades in school.
Ever had sex?
Unfortunately more than once.
Stupidest person you know?
You want a list? Give me your email.
T Favorite TV show?
I don’t have particular favourites. I will watch any, as long as it’s not overly romantic.
What time does school start for you?
I don’t go to school.
Do you have any hidden talents?
Probably, but how do I know when they are hidden?
U Is your dress style normal or unusual?
Rather unusual, even though I mostly wear hoodies.
Do you type ‘u’ or ‘you’?
U is formal you in Dutch, so I do type it in official emails.
What color is your underwear?
Black or so.

Nothing, it’s a day like every other day.

Joeri, nice to meet you.

I do sometimes.
Why did you last yell at someone?

[Horizontal graphic; background yellow streaks on black. Black, blue, and orange text: “Top 100 Most Banned and Challenged Books of the Past Decade / ALA American Library Association.” Image courtesy of the American Library Association.]
In 2020, the American Library Association released a list of the 100 most frequently banned and challenged books from 2010-2019. Most of them are for children and young adults, or are commonly assigned in schools. They range from century-old classics to current popular novels. Some were challenged for predictable reasons--swearing, violence, or sex. Many were challenged because they contained LGBTQ+ content. Some were challenged because they critiqued social institutions.
All of them are available either in the Columbus State Library or via the OhioLINK system. Clicking on any of the titles below will tell you where you can find the book; OhioLINK items can be requested and sent to the Columbus State campus. In the case of a series, the link usually leads to the first title in the series. Enjoy your right to read!
