In my research today I found this textile fragment in the Met Museum's collections:

Interesting things about it:

It's coloured with iron earth pigments

It's made of cotton

It's from Peru

From the THIRD OR FOURTH CENTURY BCE

This so shook my expectations of what-where-when that I fell down a rabbit hole and discovered that

Cotton was independently domesticated in the Old World (Asia and Africa) and New World (South and Central America) long before the Columbian Exchange, and

The variety of cotton currently marketed as "Egyptian Cotton" (Gossypium barbadense) is generally grown in Egypt, but it's a cultivar that was developed roughly three thousand years ago in SOUTH AMERICA. Like... Ecuador-region.

(The cotton that originated around Egypt, Gossypium herbaceum, is a perennial shrub that still grows wild, but has largely been replaced by New World varieties for commercial purposes.)

I forget if I posted before about how amazing pre-Columbian lace in South America was? You may not know: I fucking love lace. And that's just part of it. I found a really cool online museum exhibit from Peru that gives a quick overview of how huge the field is.

I found all of this as a side-tangent from cochineal (itself a whole tangent from Slavic folk embroidery), because the world is so enormous and splendid and complicated. Currently debating whether or not to spend an audiobook credit on A Perfect Red by Amy Butler Greenfield.

hey! as a fat person too i have a weird and complicated opinion on that because fuck that movie and fuck everything that movie stands for but he's fat himself and ideas around fatphobia in 2001 were not what they are today. without taking the latter in to consideration people don't speak bad of thin people who have actually worn fat suits as chris hemsworth, chris sullivan, terry crews, ryan reynolds, neil patrick harris, viola davis, emma thompson, kaley cuoco, max greenfield, matt leblanc, amy adams, courteney cox, hugh jackman, renee zellweger, gwyneth paltrow, mila kunis, and julia roberts so to remove him for a movie made in 2001 when him himself is fat is weird to me when people don’t hold thin people to the same level even though they themselves have worn suits.

17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?

I answered this one too, but I wanted to add that I gave The Banned Bookshop of Maggie Banks a try even after reading Must Love Books, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed that one even though I hadn't liked her debut. Similar story for Adult Assembly Required - I've read two of Abbi Waxman's books in the past, one of which I thought was okay and one which I was really disappointed by (The Bookish Life of Nina Hill, which is a fave among a lot of literary lovers), so I was pretty ready to have similar issues, but I ended up liking it a lot!

I’m kinda hoping the S 3 movie plot is similar to or just like that old S game. Gerald alternates Shadow’s memory before he was executed in order to get revenge on G.U.N. for killing Maria, Shadow falsely remembers Maria making him promise to destroy the Earth, he goes to collect the 7 emeralds and activate the Eclipse Canon, Amy helps him remember what he really promised her, goes to fix his mistake, and falls to the Earth. But the part where the movie changes it more is when he wakes up in a Greenfield hospital or some kind of lab T made to help him specifically, or maybe back in the capsule to heal him there. What happens from there, no clue.

Another idea is Rogue first befriending Omega, a few months pass and they find themselves in an old lab, they find dead soldiers and Shadow just... there, somehow end up bringing him with them, agree to help him regain the holes in his memory out of boredom or something, and help him learn about the Earth along the way. One of the holes could be Shadow remembering his life on the ARK, but he doesn’t exactly remember the attack from G.U.N., he just remembers gunshots, a sense of urgency and a protective feeling, alarms, and red flashing lights.

And I know this isn’t exactly related to the topic, but does anyone think aromatherapy and sedatives don’t work on Shadow? He’s the ultimate life form, isn’t he? Then maybe his immune system, which was also modified to battle any known and/or possible illness, would fight of the sleepy or nausea inducing effects. I’m not saying he can’t enjoy the scent of lavender, I’m saying it’s likely it won’t help him relax or affect his body the way it does others.
