The People We Hate at the Wedding by Grant Ginder

I thought this would be a fun cheery frothy novel and while it was an easy read it was kind of a downer and not in a fun way. Basically told from the perspective of three siblings and their mother the novel follows the dysfunctional family as they reunite for the wedding of their elder, richer, more functional older sister. 

This was basically a rich white people problems book and while I find those kind of fun on occasion this one was just kind of a let down and didn’t hit the mark. Everyone was awful, but not awful in a fun way.  

Ring by André Alexis

There’s a special kind of magic that occurs with books and writers you discover when you’re young and I think the only writer whose managed to evoke similar feelings and imprint on me in the same way as an adult is André Alexis.

Ring is the 5th novel in his Quincunx series, a series set mostly in Toronto but also in Southern Ontario, that takes place in the modern day but which is filled with magic and spirituality. My favourite of these was Alexis’ breakout novel, Fifteen Dogs, but Ring is a close second. It involves a woman, Gwen, who falls in love with a man she barely knows and then is told by her mother that Gwen belongs to a matrilineal line of women chosen to protect a sacred ring. 

A very beautiful and meditative book.
