March is just days away, and you all know what that means: AniMarch Madness is about to begin! Yes, our single-elimination tournament pitting anime against anime in a playoff-style bracket where voters determine the top anime of all begins this Wednesday with our play-in matches. It’s based on its namesake, the NCAA basketball tournament (“March Madness”), and roughly coincides with it.

It’s an exciting time for you to participate in what we do on Beneath the Tangles as you vote and see the results, shouting for joy or groaning in pain as anime rise and fall until only one remains! Five different anime have won each of the past five tournaments (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, My Hero Academia, Attack on Titan, Violet Evergarden, and Spy x Family)—will we get a repeat champion this time around or another new one?

Round one starts on March 4th, but the play-in matches, in which we’ll trim a record 98 anime down to the official 64, are this Wednesday!

In the meantime, follow our social media platforms to ready yourselves to vote, dig into the FAQ below if you have any questions, and let us know who you predict will win! Will Spy x Family repeat? Will this be the year that Demon Slayer finally breaks through? Will Attack on Titan win its final season of airing? Is there a dark horse you’re selecting? Post in the comments and let us know!

AniMarch Madness 2024: And the Champion Is…

The votes are in, the polls are closed, and we have a champion for our 2024 tournament!

But before we crown our latest AniMarch Madness winner, we want to thank all of you who stayed with us all month long, voted in the rounds, and commented, liked, and spread the word! This tournament is always more fun when the readers join in.

And now, for the winner!

Yes, the newcomer, participating for the first time, becomes the first anime to win in its initial entry since the first year of the tournament. And it did it quite easily! Apparently riding the wave of momentum from all the lovely words said about it by the fandom as it reached its finale and completed its run, Frieren absolutely dominated most of its round. The final against Spy x Family, last year’s champ and perhaps a presumptive favorite to win again this year, wasn’t close either. Frieren received 64.9% of the vote to SxF‘s 35.1%.

Despite an easy win for Frieren, the tournament itself was exciting, marked by more anime participants than ever before and all-time record participation in several of our platforms, like Discord and Mastodon.

As we continue perfect this tourney and expand it, we hope you’ll join us again next year and anticipate until then.

And until 2025, this is us signing off from the championship! Congratulations, Frieren, and see you next March!
