Pauline Collins and Jean Marsh in Upstairs, Downstairs (1971) Board Wages
S1E3
It's August 1904 and with the Bellamys away, the servants have the house to themselves. Hudson and Mrs Bridges are also absent and soon the rest, along with a few friends, begin drinking and partying. Rather than restrict themselves to below stairs, the party soon moves to the morning room and Sarah dons one of Lady Marjorie's evening gowns. They are all shocked however when the Bellamys eldest son James, a Lieutenant in the Life Guards, arrives unexpectedly. Rather than chuck them out or call the police, which is what most of them expect him to do, he embarrasses them further by playing along with their little game and serving them champagne until they are all quite drunk. Sarah however is as defiant as ever, standing up to him and managing to extract a promise from him not to tell his parents what has happened. She also makes a momentous decision about her own future.

Whispers of dissatisfaction are echoing through the aisles of bottles and cans that fill Ontario’s liquor stores.
On Saturday, unionized staff who run the province’s alcohol stores rallied at a downtown Toronto location, calling for wage increases and the introduction of more full-time jobs.
At the heart of their concern is the question of revised wages for the past several years.

on a list of incredibly silly, irrelevant things from the campaign i still wonder about all the time, whether Flora is actually Imogen's horse (in the legal sense of ownership) or just her favorite of Master Faramore's horses is still number one for me. do the Temults even own any horses at all or do they just work at the stables? do they board horses at the stable for a discount because they work there? do they even board horses in Gelvaan or is it more common to keep personally owned horses on your own property?? These are the important questions I need to ask for the eventual campaign wrap-up, I think

when talking about the whole submersible implosion thing, can people be careful not to discredit search and rescue as a whole? its totally possible to both address migrant safety and random freak accidents at the same time. they are not mutually exclusive. i would much rather live in a society that spends millions doing search and rescue for dumbasses who likely deserve to die, than live in a society in which emergency services can openly choose who to save and let die based on perceived cost, class, identity, or morals.

everybody should have free and equal access to information and art, and also the people who make that art should be able to earn a fair living. both of these things should happen. unfortunately, we live in a world where neither of them happens. moreover we live in a world where they are seen as oppositional forces where to favour one is to deny the other. but it is not the fault of either the producers or the consumers that these truths haven't already been reconciled, it's a) the middlemen who profit from the labour of both sides, and b) the system as a whole that makes living something to be sweated and bled for and not something we can simply do. furthermore it is deeply unfortunate that action against those middlemen will always hurt first the producers of that art and information, because rather than see their profits shrink, the middlemen will only extract more labour for less money. and this will not be a victory for the consumer in the long run, but if the alternative is for the profit to grow at the cost to the consumer, who would blame the consumer for taking the temporary victory? and the system cannot be allowed to continue to exist in the state that it is, and sometimes those middlemen are making choices that do harm. so how do you change it, if you don't want to hurt the people at the bottom who have no power over the people at the top? can it be changed? or will it always be a case of pitting the producer against the consumer as though that was ever the fight to be won in the first place?

man i loved my job more than anything but our district is the worst. when we were about to go on strike they basically said “okay, you win, here’s an 80 cent raise” completely ignoring the lack of bus drivers, funding for special programs, substitute crisis, etc etc i never felt more insulted in my life

"New Code May Discard Living Bonus," Winnipeg Tribune. October 27, 1943. Page 4. ---- OTTAWA, Oct. 27. - The cost-of-living bonus, a child of the government's wartime inflation worries, may disappear - as a bonus - if plans now understood to be receiving government consideration are made effective.
The fate of the bonus has held an important place in the drafting of a new wage and labor program stemming from the general inquiry of the National War Labor Board earlier this year and, while no definite decision has been reached, it is considered possible that money which workers now are receiving as a cost-of-living bonus will become part of their basic wage rate instead.
This theory was strengthened Tuesday night by announcement of Labor Minister Mitchell that the provincial premiers have been invited to send representatives to a Dominion-provincial conference in Ottawa Nov. 8.
New wage legislation has reached a more advanced point than any other phase of the government's new labor program but it is regarded doubtful whether it will be announced until the program as a whole is made public.
Meantime, there are indications that the cost-of-living bonus will move upward at the next adjustment, scheduled for Nov. 15 on the basis of the index figure for Oct. 2. The bonus is subject to revision every three months and the maximum bonus now payable - $4.25 a week or 17 percent of wage, depending on the wage category of the worker - is based on a wartime increase of 17 percent in the official cost-of-living index.
Early this month the index at Sept. 1 showed a wartime increase of 18.5 percent. Bonus payments are subject to change when there has been a movement of at least one full percentage point since the last adjustment. Thus, unless there is a drop of more than 0.5 percent between the Sept. 1 and Oct. 1 figures. the bonus will rise.

#god I’m so fucking bitter abt life rn#got an email from my university’s graduate school that was all ‘thank you grad students you are the backbone of our university’#and all I could think was ‘yes we fucking know. we’ve been saying this. pay us more’#it’s genuinely not the grad school’s fault. they’ve actually been really helpful to our cause#like they commissioned a study a year or two ago that found grad students here are criminally underpaid compared to peer institutions#(as in they’d need to raise our wages by 25% to be competitive. as I said. CRIMINALLY underpaid)#and they have been advocating for us to the board of governors and whatnot using this study as evidence#so I’m not actually mad at the grad school. it’s the university in general#all they do is say ‘grad students are key to our institution’s success’ like yes we know we’re just cheap labor#we teach like 60% of undergrad classes bc we’re cheaper than tenured faculty#I read this article that interviewed a bunch of NTT faculty at my school and they were like ‘yeah we get paid like $50-60k and can’t survive#on that in this VERY EXPENSIVE housing market’#and I was like ‘well damn then I will no longer feel like my inability to survive on $30k is a personal failing’#I’m at my fucking breaking point. I just need a new job#and I’ve been applying like crazy and all I’ve heard back from anyone was two rejections#I’m sure it’ll work out but it’s very hard to see that rn
